Hermione woke with a start when an ice cold hand clamped down on her mouth. She struggled to get loose until she realized it was Snape. He had his other hand on Draco’s mouth, holding him down until he quit struggling as well. He let go and held one finger to his mouth and one to his ear, indicating that they should listen.
“I don’t care what shape he’s in. I will not be denied access to my son!”
Lucius’s stern voice made Draco’s blood run cold. He wasn’t ready to face him yet, not when his relationship with Hermione was so new. And especially after having hardly any sleep since Snape had demanded they tell him everything. They’d just nodded off and he was already waking them up again. But he supposed it was a good in a way. Getting blindsided by Lucius wasn’t his idea of fun.
“Come Miss Granger,” Snape whispered, ushering her out of bed.
Hermione collapsed, unable to hold herself with her legs. Snape quickly scooped her up and drew her into his chest. The close proximity to a man she’d seen in a very physical situation not but a few days ago coupled with his vampire magnetism made her blush fiercely. She noticed Draco’s scowl and blushed even further. Damn it, she wasn’t attracted to Snape, just completely embarrassed.
“Stay silent,” he warned her before he disappeared.
“Lucius,” she heard him drawl a few moments later. “What brings you to the castle at this hour?”
“What bring me? WHAT BRINGS ME? This bloody missive, that’s what. I get a note this evening from some half dead mite-bitten bird called Errol saying that my son has been trapped in a room in this bloody castle since before Christmas! And when I arrive, what do I find? He’s been freed and no one bothered to tell me!”
“Calm down Lucius. Draco is fine,” Snape said firmly. “And I did send word of his release.”
“Did you send it on a fucking flobberworm?”
“No,” Snape drawled. “I borrowed an owl from the youngest male Weasley.”
At this point, Hermione was finding it rather hard to breathe, less she give herself away by guffawing. No wonder Draco’s parents were beside themselves. Errol! That poor bird couldn’t fly his way out of a paper sack, much less navigate his way to Malfoy Manor in a day… or in this case, almost a month. And even better, Snape had sent the last missive with Pig. Oh that was classic.
“I wish to see him Severus.”
“He is sleeping Lucius. I’m afraid he is very weak at the moment.”
“Why?” Lucius hissed.
“The boy had no food in a very cold room,” Severus hedged.
“And he had no magic?”
“He didn’t have a wand and the elves were unable to penetrate the barrier.”
Hermione’s eyes widened in shock. Snape was lying for them. And Lucius apparently didn’t know that Draco could perform wandless magic. She almost held her breath as she listened to the happenings.
“Where in the devil was he that a house elf was unable to reach him?”
“The Room of Requirement.”
“Why in the bloody hell was he in there?”
“I imagine he was looking for some peace and quiet,” Severus drawled in a board tone. “I’m sure he was unaware that the room was unsafe.”
“I can’t believe that doddering old fool allowed this,” Lucius seethed.
“The room has since been cordoned off to keep any others from befalling Draco’s fate. Now, why don’t you go home and relax for a while. Draco is fine.”
“Nonsense,” Lucius snapped. “I promised Cissa that I would not leave until I assessed him with my own eyes. Now, where is he?”
“Through that curtain,” Severus sighed. “Why isn’t Cissa here with you Lucius?”
“She hasn’t been well,” Lucius said curtly.
Draco tried to keep all emotions off of his face and feign sleep. It was difficult, especially since his father blatantly lied. His mother was perfectly well. She was just being punished for her imagined misdeeds, including allowing her son to become a spy. Lucius had bound her to the house, the sorry bastard.
He could feel his father’s eyes on him but he refused to give him the satisfaction of unnerving him. He’d been intimidated by Lucius for far too long now. If that room had shown him anything, it was that keeping your head down didn’t solve anything. No, he had to fight… just not when he was too weak to stand up.
“He’s lost weight,” Lucius said quietly.
“That’s to be expected,” Snape drawled. “However, Madam Pomfrey reports that he’ll be well enough by the weekend to rejoin his classmates.”
“I wish to speak with him,” Lucius growled.
“Allow the boy his rest,” Snape snapped. “He needs it.”
Draco peeked out from under his lashes to see Lucius spin on Snape. “You might be a teacher Severus, but you are no parent. I am his father. I know what he needs.”
Draco felt sick to his stomach. Snape was a parent, a damned good one if the scene of Venus pleading with Snape to forgive her for letting the vampire change him was anything to go by. If he was a bad father, she wouldn’t have cared less. He wanted to hex his own father for his audacity.
“Get out,” Snape hissed. “Get out before I throw you out.”
“Hit a sore spot, have we?” Lucius drawled.
Before Snape could strike, the doors to the infirmary burst open.
“HERMIONE! Hermione you’re out!”
Draco breathed a sigh of relief. He’d never been so glad to hear Potter and the Weasel come storming in. They successfully managed to break up what was sure to be one very short fight. Unfortunately, his father would pick up on what they were saying pretty soon and then they would really be in for it.
“Potter! Weasley!” Snape snapped as he rushed out of the curtain. “She is resting. And you are out after curfew. Ten points each from Gryffindor and get back to your house.”
“We will not,” Harry snapped. “We’ve been worried sick and we’ll not leave until we see her.”
Snape growled. “Potter, she has asked to receive no visitors until she is in a fit state to entertain them.”
“Fit state...” There was a pause and a shuffle before Potter exploded. “What did Malfoy do to her?”
“Nothing,” Snape growled. “She just needs her rest.”
Hermione knew that if she didn’t intervene, this would turn ugly. “Harry, Ron, I’m fine.”
“HERMIONE!”
Hermione sighed in aggravation when they came barreling into her little curtained area. She was happy to see them but she didn’t really have the energy to explain everything. She quickly yanked the hospital robe over her arm before they could see the scar marring it. She’d never told them about it, fearing that they’d go ballistic. As they enveloped her in a crushing hug that made her cry out in pain, she heard Lucius yelling about his son being trapped with a mudblood. The sensations made her dizzy.
“POTTER, WEASLEY, DISIST THIS INSTANT!” Snape roared, yanking them from her. “Miss Granger, are you alright?”
“F-fine,” she whimpered, holding her ribs. She knew they didn’t mean it, but damn it hurt.
“M-mione?” Harry asked, realizing how bad a state she was in. “What happened?”
“That’s the million galleon question, isn’t it?” Lucius drawled, yanking the curtains open all around.
AN: Lucius just ruins everyone's fun. After reading all my totally wonderful reviews, I realise I have some 'splainin to do. Hermione and Draco were trapped about 2 1/2 weeks before christmas break so that puts them in the room almost a month. Dumbledore ordered complete secrecy but allowed Poppy to call in a healer, just to make sure they were okay... and we know how that one turned out. And, I thought I dropped enough hints, but I guess not. Hermione's family are nobles. Her Grandmother holds the title of Lady, which would be passed down and so on and so forth. I picture her parents bucking the system and going into dentistry rather than politics. Here are the clues I left: In chapter 10, I said her grandmother was raising her to be a proper English lady, one the Queen would be proud of. In 21, I said her grandmother hadn't presented her to society yet. So, sorry for the confusion. Hope that answers everyone's questions so far. Well, those that won't be directly answered in the coming chapters. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. They make my Muse happy... and hyperactive. Until next time... love you guys.
And I thought I'd ask you guys this. My Muse is driving me nuts. I have ideas for two stories running through my head. Neither will be posted until all of my current ones are finished (which won't be long, actually) but I'll start working on which ever one has the most interest first. I also have another one half done but I'm not sure anyone wants to read it.
#1: Hermione is suspended from the Aurors and using magic in general when she is unable to control her temper. She starts training to fight in order to relieve her stress. Draco, thought to have fled the country after the war, is an MMA fighter. There will be a secondary pairing of Harry/Snape in this one.
#2: Hermione and Draco are both dancers and have been since they were 5. They were friends, though Hogwarts strained their relationship. The war is over and they are both severely damaged. They are creatures in this one, but I'm not saying what kind just yet. They'll have a mission from the Ministry... and their love lives to figure out.
#3: Snape barely escapes the war with his life when he finds a broken woman and her child in a bad perdicament. There will be a secondary pairing of DM/HG in this one as well as elemental magic.
So, sound off guys, if you want to. Which would you rather read?
