Waiting until Harry and Sirius sat down then started eating, Remus sighed and said, “There's something I need to show you so we can discuss how you want to handle it, Harry.”
Not liking the sound of that, Sirius' brow furrowed. “What's that?” He asked, tone wary.
Shaking his head, Remus pushed Fred and George's letter over to Harry then waited, assuming Sirius would read it over Harry's shoulder.
Brow furrowed as he read through what was there, Harry let out a sigh then shook his head. Looking at Sirius, whose eyes were narrowed, he then tossed the letter onto the table. “Did she send a letter?” He asked Remus, looking in his direction.
“Yes,” Remus told him honestly, holding it up. “We have several choices on how to handle it. You can answer it and just let her have it. You can read it then let me and Severus handle it. Severus, Sirius or I can read it and tell you what it says, then you decide what you want to do about it. Finally, you can just send it back without any of us opening it. It's up to you, Harry. We'll go by how you want to handle this.” Stopping, he waited to see what Harry wanted to do.
Picking up the letter from the twins to read it again, Sirius shook his head. Smoothing down his goatee, he tossed it back on the table when he was done then said, “I vote we just send it back. Don't bother to open it. Then we'll have you and Snape compose something that tells them to knock the shite off, that Harry doesn't want to talk to them in any way.” Looking at his godson, he asked, “That good by you, Harry?”
“Fine with me,” Harry nodded, relieved he didn't have to deal with it. Going back to eating, he listened in to see what else was said on the matter.
“We can easily do that,” Remus said with a nod, smiling. “I do believe that's the best way to go, honestly. Severus is over talking to Molly and Arthur at the moment. He's probably going to have words with the three miscreants as well. The letter from Fred and George was something he saw before he left, so he plans to make certain letters are included in what he covers. That way he doesn't let slip that Fred and George said anything to us.”
“Thankfully, those two said something,” Sirius sighed as he went back to eating.
“We are thankful as well,” Remus agreed. “We also didn't want it to slip they did. Them warning us is something we want to continue. It can only help as this progresses.”
“They would,” Harry told him softly. “They're a bit protective of me. It's always been that way. We aren't as close as Ron and Hermione thought I was to them, but they're good blokes.”
“They are,” Sirius agreed, ruffling Harry's hair. “You made a damned good choice there when it came to friends.”
“They might be jokers, but they are really loyal and their word is golden,” Harry shrugged. “Since they rescued me after my first year, they've been that way. Ron just never knew about it.”
“That was probably for the best,” Remus said honestly. Ron knowing Harry was closer to his brothers would have probably made the jealousy bit worse than it already was. Fred and George tended to ignore such areas for the most part, something Harry probably really needed. Quietly, he asked, “Besides Fred and George, are there any others you don't want us checking over or reading before we pass them to you?”
“Luna and Neville,” Harry said without thinking. “The twins said they would make sure they wrote.” Thinking it over, he shrugged, “That's it, honestly. Anyone else I really don't care to hear from. It's not like I'm close to anyone but that lot.”
“We'll make sure those get to you and will just ship the rest back,” Sirius told him, polishing off the last of his food. Thinking it over, Sirius was pleased with that. Though it was only four people Harry apparently thought of as friends, it was good that he had them. After all, his circle of those had been limited in school as well. The quantity really didn't matter, it was the quality that did. And, from what he saw and heard from Fred and George, those were the kind you wanted. So, he wasn't going to say a word about more of them or press to have Harry answer letters from others. This was good by him.
Quickly, Remus went over the bit with the calendar that he and Severus came up with. After he finished, he said, “I have it set up. I'll give you the master copy, Sirius. That way we know what you're planning for and can work accordingly.”
“Good idea! Yeah, this will work well,” Sirius admitted. After making sure the standard ward was up, he said, “I have an idea about Lucius and getting him over here that might work better than what we've been doing.”
“What's that?” Remus inquired, interested. What they were doing would work fine for now, but Severus would be going back to school soon then they would have to go about it another way.
“The elves,” Sirius grinned. “Let them bring him over and take him back. They can get through any warding we have up. This way we don't have to worry. Plus, they can get him the hell out if something happens. With Kreacher now serving Harry, he can easily do it as we know he'll make sure that we're all protected and there aren't problems.”
“Oh, that would work magnificently!” Remus told him, pleased. “Far better than what we've been doing. This way Severus wouldn't have to risk getting him here then out. He won't have to come out of your room, either, thus risk being seen if someone pops over. We need to go with this idea.”
“I figure as people start feeling guiltier over this mess, more are going to turn up at odd hours. That puts plenty at risk,” Sirius sighed. “I don't want to chance that unless we have to.”
“Very true as well,” Remus nodded. “I'm sure that Severus will be pleased with this as well. We were wondering how to go about so much once he went back to school. Lucius gives us plenty of much needed information that I don't want to do without.”
“True,” Sirius agreed, slipping an arm around Harry and pulling him close. Feeling his godson lean against him, he continued, “The mirrors will help with that as well. As Snape has Harry's, it'll allow him to pass on plenty also. That we do need.”
“I'm happy with that too,” Remus said. “He'll be around a couple days a week, but this will help more, especially with what's bound to come.”
“Anything we need to handle today?” Sirius asked, hoping there wasn't.
“Nothing for you, no. Someone must be feeling plenty guilty because we got the official packet we needed after Severus left. There was also a message from Minerva telling us that we'll have the curriculum from all the teachers in a couple of days. As this is something Severus and I plan to take on, we won't need to involve you in it. I think we can get it all hammered out over the next few days and have it set up like we want it.”
“Yeah, I'll let you two take on that shite,” Sirius chuckled, shaking his head. “I wouldn't know where to start with it.”
“It shouldn't be hard as we don't have to worry about so much like you do in school with conflicting classes and teacher schedules. We can also go over everything there to see what we should focus on and what Harry already knows. That way we can prepare for the OWLs.”
“How does that work with me being homeschooled?” Harry asked, decidedly curious. “And what about Astronomy? I can't see that being as easy as it is in school because of all the lights about here in London.”
“Astronomy we do have to work with as what you just mentioned is a problem. Let me see what we can manage with it.” Remus admitted. “As for OWLs, you'll be going to the Ministry for those. It's something they have set up already because others are homeschooled as well. Nothing to worry about there.” He assured Harry. Sighing, he then admitted, “We're going to have to work around Care as well. That's something that will be theory only as we have no way to do practical. It should be enough for you to pass the OWL on it.”
“Good with me,” Harry grinned. “No chance of getting eaten or mauled by something that way!”
“A good way to look at it,” Sirius laughed, clapping him on the back. Looking at Remus, he said, “While you figure out the schedule, make sure to add in something for the Animagus transformation. Harry has the books for it, and has read them, so I want to work with that.”
“Easily done,” Remus smiled. “I'll make sure Severus and I put in time for that as well.”
“Am I going to start earlier than the rest or just go by their start date?” Harry asked, curious.
“We're going by the school schedule,” Remus told him. “The same with days off and weekends as well. There are just bits we do have to do differently is all. Some has to do with Runes and Arithmancy. Those we have to work around Lucius' schedule as he's the one taking those on with you. Sirius and I—we just don't know enough to teach them. So, it's going to depend on when he has free time to work with you. We'll try, but you need to sit with him the normal hours a week to do that. The rest we should be good with. We think, with how good you are at catching on, we should end up fairly far ahead of those in the castle. That's fine, too. From what I saw, as long as we put in so many hours a week, something Severus can confirm as he signs off on what you do, we can go at our own pace and take breaks from whatever. It shouldn't be as stressful as school, honestly.”
“Good,” Harry said with a nod, happy about that.
Putting a hand on the back of Harry's head and rubbing it, Sirius said, “We only have you to work with, not a whole class, so we won't have to worry about some of the issues there. Once we figure out your pace and how you go about it, we should move quickly. We can also add in other bits you want to learn. I plan to work with you on dueling once the backyard is done and we get some warding up. We know you're good and can hold your own, but I thought that it's best to help more. With all the shite going on, you need more than you know.”
“That I'd like,” Harry admitted.
“We thought you would,” Remus smiled. “This week we're going to get your Harry House dragon hourglass up and some other bits ready. I thought that Hogsmeade days we'd see about arranging to get you out of the house and do something. If you want, we could go into Hogsmeade, but I thought you'd like to pick something here in London instead.”
“I'd rather do London. There's plenty to do here,” Harry told him.
“Good. I'd really rather go about it that way,” Remus admitted.
“How much do you have to work out with this?” Sirius asked, holding Harry close.
“There is a fair bit,” Remus told him. “Nothing to worry about, though. I'm going to sit down with Severus and start today if he doesn't have anything pressing to tend to. We'll manage fairly quickly, don't worry.”
“Just let me know when you have it sorted so I know what we're doing,” Sirius told him. Then, grinning, he added, “And we're making ourselves scarce when you start, fair warning.”
Chuckling at that, Remus told him, “There's no need for you to involve yourselves anyway. It's best Severus and I tend to it alone. Go have fun and do whatever.”
“We will,” Sirius grinned, nudging the snickering Harry. Pressing on, he began asking about anything else that might crop up that week, hoping there wasn't much as he wanted to spend as much time alone with Harry as he could.
After coming in and taking a seat at the table, Severus took a cup of tea from an elf then eyed the mass of papers Lupin had spread hither and yon over the table. After a sip of his drink, he asked, “Do I want to know what you're up to?”
“Most of this is from the packet we were waiting on. The rest is me trying to figure out a schedule for what we're doing. Sirius wants a couple bits added that aren't on here, so I'm just trying to devise the best way to tend to this.” Remus explained, heating up his own tea then taking a sip. Smiling, he added, “And waiting for you to come back. It was my hope you didn't have anything pressing today and we could start hammering this out as you're more acquainted with where Harry is in certain areas.”
“I don't and we can get started,” Severus told him, pleased. “I think we can get the most basic of it done today then refine tomorrow.”
“Good,” Remus nodded, pleased for the break. Quietly, he asked, “How did it go? Any problems?”
“None,” Severus confirmed then gave him a rundown of what was said. “Molly and Arthur were fine with what I had to say, agreeing to all of it without question. Both were actually quite upset by the article in the paper. Like everyone else, it seems, they knew that Harry was being referred to. They then had me talk to the three. I'll be honest that I doubt it did any good. They're going to keep on trying because I denied their request to send an apology to Harry. Then I made it as clear as I could that he wants left alone and that Black is taking it on next time they try something foolish. Also, the consequences of what will come of it. Like with everything else, I doubt it fully sunk in.” Changing topics when he saw Lupin nod, he asked, “What does Harry want to do about the letter?”
Telling Severus what was said, Remus added, “We can easily take that on without issue. And I've learned that Fred and George are correct; Pig is highly susceptible to bribery with sweets. All it took was a tiny bit of chocolate for me to get the letter from him.” With that, he smiled.
“Which is good for us,” Severus smirked. Then he added, “It probably explains his manic behavior as well.” Smirking bigger, Severus added, “And one of the things I imparted was that Harry heard Molly's rant. She was rather embarrassed by that, but I pointed out that it probably did him plenty of good to listen in. Arthur agreed with me.”
“It did,” Remus nodded. “Probably more than anyone knows. Sirius said Lucius talked to Harry about it a little when it finished. At least the seed is planted. I think that can help us all in plenty of ways.”
“It can,” Severus agreed. “Let Black see what he can manage with that and press on.” Deciding that was enough of that, he looked around at the paperwork and sighed. “What do you have done so far? That way we can dive in and get as much in place as possible.”
“Some, not much. Bits of this—you know better than I where Harry is with it. We also have to work around issues with Astronomy. Sirius wants to add dueling and Animagus transformation. There is also the problem of getting with Lucius to figure out when he can work on Runes and Arithmancy with Harry. So, we have quite a bit to suss out, Severus.”
Drumming his fingers on the table, Severus said, “Dueling—I like that idea and it needs tended to. Let me take a gander at what the OWL requirements are to see what we can skip. We'll add dueling to DADA as Harry is plenty caught up with what's required. As we aren't following what that toad is teaching, we won't worry about that and can do what we want. Animagus—that's Transfiguration. We can easily take one of the classes a week to work on that as Harry will do fine on his own with what's coming. History—I believe, with what Binns is like teaching, we need to cover more intensively to make certain Harry is up to where he should be. You and Black can probably make it far more interesting for him.”
“I think anyone could,” Remus chuckled. “I believe Harry still has all his books, so we won't need anything special.”
“Good,” Severus nodded. “We'll leave Runes and Arithmancy out of what we're doing for now. I think, maybe, you and Black can take part of it as Harry does seem to know what he's doing. I'll pop over the Manor tomorrow and get with Lucius to see what he wants to do. If he's unavailable, Narcissa might be able to step in and help. She took the classes and did very well in them. It'll assist, anyway.”
“We'll work something out. As Harry's comfortable with her now, he won't have an issue with that,” Remus said, pleased. That part jogging loose what Sirius said about getting Lucius over, he quickly imparted the plan his friend had come up with. “We need to go about it this way. Not only is it safer on all of us, it won't look odd if anyone shows up.”
“We will,” Severus told him firmly, liking that idea. “And if it works, Lucius may be able to show up once a week to work with Harry in person on the two classes. That can help as well.”
“I didn't think of that, but it's perfect,” Remus admitted, pleased. Looking at the mass of paperwork, he sighed and asked, “What are we going to do about Astronomy? Can we get him a different telescope that will negate all the lights? I think his may work, but the ones they recommend are not geared for filtering out Muggle lights.”
Rubbing a hand over his face, Severus thought it over then said, “Let me pop over to the Alley when we're done. I'll check to see what the shop has or what they can recommend. We might be able to get our hands on one to filter out the lights. I'll see what they say. If they don't know, we might have to go about this another way. I—it's something I don't know. If it comes down to it, I'll get with Albus to see what he can recommend we do. Theory is fine for most of it, but this has to have practical for him to even pass the OWL.”
“If worse comes to worst and we can't find anything on our own, I say we ask Molly and Arthur to go over there once a week to tend to it. They're far enough away from Muggles that we can easily do what we need to. We'll just have to get him something more powerful is all. This way we don't have to involve Albus,” Remus said after thinking it over, not wanting the old man involved if they didn't have to.
“If we can't find a better option, we'll go that route. Good idea,” Severus told him with a pleased nod.
“There is an unrelated bit I need to toss in here,” Remus said, remembering something Sirius told him while Harry was in the loo. Imparting the bit about the code phrase, he said, “What Sirius wants, and it's a good idea, is for us to take on whatever if Harry says that. It's his way of telling all of us he needs time away. Sirius said he'll handle the part with Harry, but wants us to take on anyone that might be around.”
“We'll do that,” Severus said firmly. “Good. He found something. Let's see what he can do.” Looking around, he sighed then said, “Let's delve in and get started. We'll begin with a list of what classes he's taking and press on from there.”
Digging out a spare piece of parchment from under some others, Remus began the list, pleased that between the two of them they should have something workable before the day was done.
Sprawled out on the bed in their room with Harry seated between his legs, Sirius was looking over his godson's shoulder, reading the book Harry was perusing. His godson wanted to reread parts of the book he had received for his birthday. Sirius, too, wanted to look over parts as he was still working with his role in this. Holding Harry close, he rested his chin on his godson's shoulder, taking in what was written there. They were planning on taking a nap, so Harry was in his jammies with one of the sides of the 'crib' up, but thought reading first was a good idea.
Carefully looking over the page on comforting behaviors, reading some of what was listed, he gave Harry a squeeze and said, “We need to figure out which of these, or more than one of them, you want or think you can handle. It can help, Harry.”
Though flushing slightly at that because of what was listed there, Harry's eyes kept drifting to one of them. It was the one he wanted, but he was having problems pointing it out or even indicating that's what he wanted. After all, such bits were still embarrassing for him. This one especially, because of what it was.
Holding onto Harry with one arm, Sirius lifted his chin then pulled back slightly to unzip Harry's jammies. Letting the hand of the arm wrapped around him slip into the opening to rest on Harry's bare stomach, he patted it then pointed to one of the behaviors in the book. “I like that one. What do you think, Harry?”
Flushing more as Sirius was pointing to the one he liked, Harry wasn't sure what to do. Clutching Elliot tightly with one arm, holding the book with the other, he stared at the first line that gave the name of it.
Seeing the reaction from Harry, Sirius gave him a gentle squeeze. Holding him close again, he asked, “Is that what you want to try? All you have to do is nod. If it's not, you don't have to. Find something else you like and just point to it. I'm not saying jump in right away, but we can work towards that.” Kissing Harry on the side of the head, he told him softly, “It's just me, Harry, Daddy. You know I don't care. And, honestly, I want to see you do that.”
Staring at the phrase 'thumb sucking', what Sirius had pointed to, Harry just gave a short nod, nothing more. Clutching Elliot tightly, he shut his eyes and waited.
“We'll work on that, then,” Sirius told him, giving him another squeeze. Feeling the stress and taking in Harry's body language, he figured that was enough for now. Summoning the blanket he got for his birthday, Sirius pulled back after it was in his hand and wrapped it around Harry. Holding him close once more, he kissed him on the side of the head then said, “I think that's enough for now. Let's lay down and get some rest. When we wake up, we'll find something fun to do.”
“Alright,” Harry said, snuggling in his blanket and leaning against Sirius. It did feel good to get across something he wanted to do, but was hard as well because of what it was.
Holding Harry close, Sirius shifted them around and laid them down. Curling up to Harry's back, he held him close. “We're good, Harry. Nothing to stress about. Daddy wants to see you do that too and hold you while you do it. I like the idea. So, we'll work towards it.” Kissing his godson on the head again, he soothed, “It's fine. We won't jump in right away, but will work towards it.”
“I can do that I think,” Harry told him softly. Holding Elliot close, he shut his eyes. While he did, he envisioned what they were talking about, being snuggled under his blanket and held while sitting in the rocking chair. That he wanted. He really did. So, he wanted to work towards it. That was hard, though. More than anyone realized.
