Kingsley Shacklebolt having been named first interim and then permanent Minister of Magic after the war, early on had created a position for Remus at the Ministry – that of werewolf liaison. He had argued quite reasonably that Fenrir made so many new werewolves before being taken down, the position is sorely needed; it’s not just a job for the sake of having one.
He had cautioned Remus that it would be hard work to convince werewolves that they could still be productive members of wizarding society, and also to convince wizarding society that werewolves could be productive members (as Remus already has been), without necessarily also having to be a danger; and he could not think of anyone more qualified to hold that position.
Remus had taken the job reluctantly, at first still believing that it was mostly charity on Shacklebolt’s part – until people had begun to pour into his office as word of it spread, asking how to manage their conditions; and not all of them newly-made werewolves, either. For the first time since his short year as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, he felt like he was actually doing something very useful.
A newer potion that actually prevents the transformation had been developed, but he knows from personal experience that it begins to lose its effect, the longer one goes without allowing the change to happen. So one of his first projects was to negotiate the use of a large fenced reserve, where they all could go for the night of the full moon; where they can hunt and mingle as a pack, without any fear of harming anyone in their search either for prey to stalk, or for each other.
As others had seen that their condition could be managed successfully, they had begun to lose their fear of them; and the werewolves themselves had forged a stronger network from getting to know one another more openly than they'd been able to before now. And it had allowed more of them to find and hold jobs, and even find permanent partners.
His next challenge was one he didn’t really expect – with the wolves running in collective packs more often during their change, apparently unintended pregnancies are also happening. Before, the wolves often did not find one another during their change, but now that so many are coming together for it, there are lots of indiscriminate couplings happening during that night. He’s sure he’s probably also contributed himself, though of course he never remembers it; none of them ever do. So, he goes in search of a foolproof but temporary sterility spell or charm that works on man and beast alike, and enlists Evie and Hermione’s help to find one.
Between the three of them they are able to devise one of each – a spell that lasts for 24 hours and can be cast on all who wish it as they arrive at the reserve, and a charm that is effective as long as it’s worn (and that won’t easily come off during the change). They joke about whether these should be taught at Hogwarts also, since they are actually as effective in human form as they are in wolf form…
Evie laughs at the joke, but inside it leaves sort of a bitter aftertaste. Hermione has Ron, and Remus has a sexual outlet as a wolf, even if he doesn’t remember it later. But she has nothing, and can’t imagine how she ever could again – nobody is ever going to be for her what Severus was, and she’s just not the type to seek out casual dalliances. She is happy and fulfilled with raising all four children, but sometimes she wishes there was some way she could have some kind of physical closeness with someone, even if it could never be the same as it was with Severus.
One night, she and Remus have opened a bottle of wine during dinner, and have stayed up drinking it long after the kids are in bed. He has never really asked about Snape, but tonight he looks at her and says that if she’s ready to talk about it, he’d still love to know how they ended up together, he’d never have imagined it in a million years.
She starts talking and it all comes pouring out, certain that Severus wouldn’t mind him knowing these things now. How much Severus loved her mother, how he agreed to protect Evie without anyone knowing, how he came to her after Sirius died, and how over time he opened up to her completely and proved to be an incredibly wonderful man underneath that caustic outer shield that was the face he showed to most of the world.
By now, nearly everyone in the wizarding world was aware of why he killed Dumbledore and his protection of Hogwarts afterwards, and consider him a hero; but still, few know how truly good he was, and fewer still know that he and Evie had a child, and probably won’t know until Albus is old enough to go to Hogwarts. She also tells him about the night with the Resurrection stone, and the encounter in the insubstantial version of King’s Cross station; somewhat by way of letting him know just how deep her love for Severus was, that ultimately she’d chosen him even over Sirius.
She cries often during the telling, and Remus at first takes her hand across the table as a show of support; but as she continues relating the story, he takes her out to the couch so that he can sit with his arm around her as she talks – sometimes laughing, sometimes weeping. When she’s talked out, he talks in his turn about Tonks as well, though of course there’s not much she didn’t already know about them; she knows he’s mostly just letting it out, the same way she has tonight.
He does tell her one thing that answers a long-ago question; he tells her how much he had feared that Teddy would inherit his lycanthropy, that in fact he and Tonks had even split up for a few days over it when she told him she was pregnant, so angry was he with himself and to some degree with her also, for taking that risk. Now, she understands the mix of pain and joy on his face the day he told her that they were expecting.
