Chapter 32
Though confused as to why the Minister of Magic wanted a meeting, Krystian stood, shook his hand, gestured for him to take a seat then sent for the usual niceties. After he took a seat himself with a soft groan, he laced his fingers over his ample belly. “What can I do for you, Rufus?” Since he ensured the Soothsayer stayed in the right side of the law in all ways and never indulged in anything remotely dodgy, he knew they had done nothing wrong. The only thing that came to mind was it had something to do with a story they published and he needed help with something in it.
Rufus settled back and nodded to Krystian when he asked the question, but waited until his secretary delivered the standard and left before saying anything. “I have a proposition for you,” he said, taking a cup of tea, looking at the man.
“What kind?” Krystian asked, now intrigued. Leaning forward, he clasped his hands on the desk, iron-grey mustache bristling slightly in anticipation, the way it always had in the past when he knew he was onto something intriguing or big.
“Someone made a suggestion and mentioned your paper,” Rufus started. “I want it clear that if you turn the offer down, it won’t go beyond this office.” He knew all newspapers had standard spells to protect privacy and wanted them used.
After tapping a small statuette of a quill scribbling on paper, Krystian assured him, “Wards are in place and I can’t pass what is said until I have your permission.” Now he was more curious than ever.
“As you know, the Prophet has grown worse with time. Their treatment of various extremely serious topics is sadly lacking, if not downright laughable by serious journalistic standards. We won’t even go into the black eye it received during the Fudge administration,” Rufus launched in.
“I know this well,” Krystian snorted, unable to suppress the roll of his eyes. “What does that have to do with the Soothsayer? I refuse to have my people go the route they do, though it’s popular with the masses.” Now he was more curious than ever to where this was going.
“Which is why they suggested your paper to me, one of them anyway,” Rufus nodded. “Look, honestly, the UK needs a daily paper which will report what’s going on truthfully and fully. If it means holding the Ministry over a cauldron for their errors, that’s fine as well. We need the complete, hard-hitting truth out there so the general populace takes the war seriously. They aren’t because, despite what the Ministry is saying, the Prophet isn’t doing its job and is downplaying so much.”
Though he said nothing, Krystian nodded as he followed along. He was still unsure just where this was going. The only thing he could think of was Rufus wanted them to shift away from their usual main focus and move onto normal news. He could manage that, but it wouldn’t be easy.
Rufus pressed on, “This can’t go on, period. I’ve known this for a while. Then I received a suggestion in this area I liked.” Leaning forward, elbows on his knees, he looked intently at Krystian and launched into the proposal. “We thought your paper would be the perfect one to take on converting to a daily paper and tackle the task.” He then stopped and waited.
Of all he might suspect would end up suggested, this wasn’t something he considered. And he was highly intrigued! In fact, he wanted it. There were obstacles, though, big ones. After clearing his throat, Krystian told him, “While the idea intrigues me, I’m not sure it’s something I can pull off, Rufus.”
“Let me ask this before we go any further,” Rufus said, holding up his hand. “if we can work through most of the issues, is this something you would be willing to do?” He wouldn’t push further if Krystian didn’t, then would find another paper.
“Well, yes, I can see the possibilities here,” Krystian nodded thinking this was one of the better ideas presented to him and he now wanted it.
“Right,” Rufus said, smiling just a bit, leaning back, relaxing slightly. “What are the biggest obstacles? Let’s hash them out then go from there.” Yes, he thought this was something he thought he could swing.
As Severus listened to Albus, he nodded slowly, feeling both increasing anxiety because the odds of his secret coming out had increased, but there was also some relief in knowing the information was as protected as anyone could get and covered when the war ended. He then stopped pacing and looked at the old man, arms folded over his chest before asking, “Anyone informed about me being a spy will also end up covered by the Official Secrets Act, correct?” If they were, it meant he was as protected as anyone could get. He liked that idea.
“Indeed,” Albus assured him with a nod. “They will have to sign the paperwork and the spells will also be cast on them when they do. This is as good as a Fidelius, Severus.”
“Good,” Severus nodded, relived, slumping slightly. He then took a seat with a soft sigh, relaxing just a little.
Albus pushed a cup of tea across the desk towards Severus then said, “Rufus is able to do more with the information than I am, keep that in mind. You’re helping plenty.”
“Understood,” Severus told him after taking a sip of tea. He did like the idea and how much the information he could glean would help stop the war.
“Now, what I need for you to do is write down everything you’ve heard or seen which might be of use, no matter how minor. If it’s an item only you would know, mark it as such so if Rufus uses it he can protect you. The more he has, the more he can put together with what he knows. It can only help. Once you finish, deliver it to me with the standard spells I’ll then take it to him,” Albus instructed.
“Consider it done,” Severus told him with a determined nod. “I’ll hole up in my office here at the school and do it here as I don’t want to chance taking on such a task at home. With how the situation is, I’ll do it overnight. Just give me time.”
“In your own time,” Albus said with a small smile. “Just be careful.”
“Never fear, I will,” Severus said, planning to keep himself as protected as he could manage.
Once more settling back in his chair, Albus began to ask about anything Severus might have heard to stay on top of the situation.
Since Remus was busy with the standard, Sirius decided to press more for the normal, so he grabbed Harry and went back on the Great Porn Hunt. Knowing Remus the way he did, he was damned certain he had already redistributed his stash knowing the two of them would hunt for them. Besides, the hunt would give him and Harry time to talk alone while going through the normal.
He decided to go about this methodically and start at the bottom then work their way up, avoiding Remus and his smug, deceptively angelic looks. Leading Harry quietly down to the basement, he chuckled, “I doubt he stashed anything down here other than stuff to throw us off as it’s too obvious, but it’s a good way to get to know the house and where everything is.”
“True,” Harry agreed, ensuring he stayed behind Sirius as he went down the stairs.
Once at the bottom, Sirius stopped and looked around. Unlike the rest of the house, down here wasn’t finished. While there were partitioned rooms, the walls were all a dull, dark grey with no adornment. It was obvious it had always been used for storage or something like that, not as a ‘part of the house’. It didn’t appear as though there was much down here either, some open boxes and a few other items, but he still wanted to take a closer gander. Motioning Harry to follow, he began to walk towards the nearest room. “Keep an eye out for anything odd or a hiding place. I don’t think much is down there, but you never know.”
Though he nodded, Harry said nothing, following along behind, his eyes akimbo(.
As he walked, Sirius took Harry’s arm and pulled him closer until Harry walked beside him instead of behind. Arm slipping around his shoulders, he held Harry close as he moved. As expected, most of what they saw so far had nothing in it. “We’re going to have to figure out a way to use the space down here. Since we don’t have much of anything to store, there’s no sense in letting the space go to waste.”
Again, Harry nodded but said nothing. So far, he couldn’t see anywhere you could stash or hide something.
After a glance at Harry, Sirius then guided them into a room. “We’ll take the smallest room down here and create a potions lab. It’s needed, of course. The rest—not sure. What do you think?” Then he waited, assuming Harry would need some prodding though it was getting easier for him to answer questions.
Face scrunching up slightly, Harry thought it over while glancing around. As Sirius guided them along, he had an idea, but struggled to say it.
Sirius held Harry closer and encouraged him as they looked around, “I want to hear your suggestions.” He hoped that would be enough to help.
Though Harry nodded to let Sirius know he heard, he continued to struggle. After a few moments he was able to utter, voice slightly uneven, “Maybe a game room.” Then he grinned a little since he managed to say it.
After giving Harry a reassuring squeeze, Sirius grinned and nodded. “I like that idea. We’ll do it. One of the things we need to do is make it a tad brighter down here as well. Not only with better lighting, but painting it with a brighter colors to cheer it up a tad. It’s a bit too gloomy for my tastes.” Then he led Harry into the next room.
“Mine as well,” Harry agreed as he looked around. He then spied something odd on one of the outside walls that was all stone. Nudging Sirius, he pointed to what looked like a stone which was pulled out slightly.
“Ah-ha!” Sirius chuckled. “We’re onto something I think.” Then he tugged Harry towards it. He began to pull at the stone, which came out easily. Behind it were three magazines.
With a chuckle, Sirius pulled them out then flipped through them. He then rolled his eyes and handed them to Harry. “Yeah, he put them there to throw us off. These are just naked blokes, nothing more.”
“Oh yeah,” Harry chuckled with a nod as he looked through them. When he finished, he passed them back and waited.
Once he placed them back and put the stone in place, Sirius said, “Right, we’ll cover the rest of the basement, but I’ll wager we won’t find any more. Then we’ll go upstairs and press on.” Once more he put a hand on Harry’s shoulder and guided him to the next room.
“You doing and feeling better?” He asked Harry as they walked along. “You seem like it and are acting closer to normal, but I want to hear what you think.”
“I am,” Harry nodded with minimal struggle. “It’s a struggle with so much, but it’s getting easier.”
“Progress is good,” Sirius grinned, nodding. Giving Harry’s shoulder a squeeze, he added, “We just need to keep going. Soon we’ll be back to normal then we go from there.” Lowering his voice, he added, “We want our normal Harry back just how you were.” That’s where he left it, not wanting to overly stress him.
With a small smile, Harry nodded, leaning against Sirius. “Trying,” he told him simply.
“All we can ask of you,” Sirius nodded. The he changed topics. “Rufus has the cup. The goblins found it easily enough, thankfully.”
“Is it a Horcrux?” Harry inquired, curious, glancing around as he did, but saw nothing out of the ordinary or where Remus could have stashed something.
“Haven’t heard,” Sirius told him honestly. “I’ll ask, but not sure if Albus knows.” Then he switched topics as they finished wandering through the last room and headed back towards the stairs. “Do you think you’re up to having Arthur around again and not staying as Little Paws?”
Harry stopped then looked at Sirius. Starting to sweat a little, he stammered out, “I’m not sure.” The idea filled him with low-level panic, though it wasn’t as bad as it was before. It was still there, though, and hard to deal with.
Arm tightening around Harry’s shoulders, he pulled him closer then kissed him on the side of the head. “Calm down,” he soothed. “Nothing to stress over. As you know, Arthur goes out of his way to not cause issues. He’s safe to have around and won’t cause problems.”
With a shaky sigh, Harry nodded as he thought it over. He knew this was a step he had to take to get over the hump, but it was extremely hard. After pondering it hard, he asked softly, “If I get uncomfortable, can I shift to Little Paws?”
“Of course!” Sirius assured him with a small grin. “We want you to try, though.”
A ragged sigh slipping out, Harry nodded, looking down, “I will, but give me a couple of days to build up to this.”
Still holding him close, Sirius assured him, “We will and will help all we can. Nothing to worry about, my word.”
After Harry nodded, Sirius began to guide them up the stairs. He changed topics to let the stress die down, talking about how to avoid Remus while they hunted to calm him down. It should help and he would be better shortly.
One long slim finger tracing over Harry’s jaw, Remus smiled as he felt the light stubble there. Because of his age before going through the Veil and how far into adolescence he was, Harry hadn’t started shaving yet. Now it appeared he should. Smile still there, he told Harry, “We need to teach you to shave. I’ll say something to Sirius so we can take it on.”
With a nod, reaching up to rub his chin, Harry smiled, but said nothing. It was late, an hour or so before they normally went to bed. He and Remus were curled up in bed in nothing but their boxers while waiting for Sirius to finish his shower. To deal with the bond and for the sake of their sanity, they were trying to spend small increments of time apart, such as a shower and whatnot. Remus and Sirius were doing fine with it, but he was still struggling to deal and hurried through whatever to get back to them as fast as he could. They were pressing for him to spend more time doing whatever and he was, but it was still hard.
Hand drifting up, Remus began to run his fingers through the thick hair on Harry’s head, still smiling. “How about playing some cards before bed? What do you think? We’re all tired and don’t want to do anything too active, so this would be a nice way to calm down before sleeping,” he suggested.
“Sounds like a good idea,” Harry nodded. Though not tired enough to fall asleep, he was worn out a bit and didn’t feel like doing much. Then he grinned just a little and added, “We still didn’t find your porn stash. You interrupted us before we could do much searching in the main part of the house.”
Genial smile crossing his face, Remus chuckled, “Well, it gives you something to do with your time if you’re bored. Keep hunting. I didn’t make it easy on either of you to find what’s hidden.” This he liked. At least part of Harry’s joking manner was back. It was something he really missed, more than he cared to admit.
“True,” Harry told him with a small grin. “You couldn’t make it easy on us, could you?”
“Where’s the fun in that?” Remus chuckled, arm slipping around Harry’s shoulders, pulling him close then resting his head against Harry’s. “I had to make it a challenge.”
“You always do,” Harry said, grin growing. “And you’re distracting us from the hunt.”
“Again, an obstacle to make the search better. I like ensuring I keep the two of you on your toes. After all, there is only one of me and two of you. That means I need to be more complicated to make up for my disadvantage.”
Now snickering, Harry just shook his head, the grin still there. “We’ll find it, all it’ll take is time.”
“The more of a challenge I make it, the more you hone some deductive skills,” Remus told him, smiling himself. Wrapping both arms around Harry, he pulled him close, holding him there and sighing happily. It was nice to have this closeness once more. Though the two had been back for a while, he had missed it enough that he could still relish in it rather than take it for granted like so many do. Eyes sliding shut, he continued to smile.
“I don’t need help with my deductive skills,” Harry snickered, snuggling into Remus. “I was around Hermione enough that I do a fair job of it.”
Unable to help himself, Remus laughed at what Harry said. “Well, there is that, yes. She did rub off on you in good ways. Sirius, though, needs to hone his skills once more. This will help him. As he relies so much on Padfoot for such ventures, this will make him use what’s between his ears instead.”
That Harry laughed outright at. “True,” he had to admit. “Padfoot has good uses, though. He helps sniffing out plenty for us.”
“He needs to depend more on his human deductive reasoning, though,” Remus joked, that smile still there. Yes, this was the Harry they remembered so well. While not fully back, he was close. They just had to press some more to get him there. He planned to keep going with this joking train of conversation and include Sirius when he came out. It would put them all in a good mood and make sleep come easy. Yes, this was proof that it was working quite well.
With the help of their Lord, the only person known to have successfully broken into Gringotts and a goblin he had as a spy, Bella had conceived a plan to retrieve the cup from her old vaults. While she knew the vaults were probably being transferred around, the contents anyway, she was certain she could find it. And she was wrong. Very wrong.
It had taken them hours to get it and much work, but they finally managed. By the time she and a couple of others stepped out of the bank at almost dawn, they had been through all her old vaults and a few others, but couldn’t find where the cup was. Then they went through some paperwork they could find. That’s when they learned someone had taken it. Capturing two of the goblins left to watch the bank overnight, they tortured them until they learned it was given to Rufus. Now she was infuriated beyond what she ever had been. And she was sure their Lord would be the same way when she told him.
After exiting the bank, she tried to think. They needed to leave the area, of course, because she was sure some alarm had ended up set off, but she needed to think. Something had to give with the situation and work her way once more, but she didn’t know how to get it there.
When she started to hear a commotion, she signaled for everyone to Apparate to their Lord’s headquarters then she would discuss it with him and see what he wanted to do. Either way, she planned to find a means to get even with Sirius and make him pay for this outrage. Not sure how, she focused on finding a way. Once she did, revenge was hers!
Rufus was jarred out of a troubled sleep about three in the morning by the signal from the Floo. From the urgent sound, it was an emergency situation. Apprehensive about what this could be, he almost jumped out of bed and was still tugging his robe on when he knelt down to answer.
Still rubbing sleep out of his eyes, exhausted, he was instantly fully awake when he heard the situation with Gringotts. Oh yes, he would have to go in and tend to this personally. Once be gave orders on how to contact the head goblin and how to shore up everything, he promised to meet them there shortly.
Once the call cut off, he stood with a loud groan. Pepper-Up was in order to deal with this. There was plenty to sort out then tend to. Measures to protect Gringotts needed tended to and other areas. They needed to see what, if anything, had been taken. Then find clues of what they wanted. It could give them an idea of who might have done this, though he already had plenty of good guesses. He just needed proof, nothing more.
With a shake of his head, he trudged off to the bedroom to get ready. Once he saw what was going on, he would pull in who he needed then send out for those who might have information. This was not a mess he needed right now, but would deal with it. All he could do.
As he readied himself to deal with the latest nightmare in this awful war, he tried to come up with something, anything, which might give them an edge to end it. There was nothing, though. He had tried and he couldn’t think of a thing. Maybe it was time to pick Albus’ brains to see of the old man had an idea he didn’t. It was to the point he thought he might have to. Their world—it couldn’t take much more of this without not being able to rebound.
