Hermione left with his last words spinning in her head "Call me Draco." Even thinking about calling him by his first name felt foreign in her mouth. She had never called him by his first name before, well, besides being under the influence of the love potion but she didn't count that. She wasn't technically in her right mind.
She didn't know why she accepted Draco's offer. And thinking back to it, she couldn't believe she had actually agreed to it. Wait until Harry and Ron found out, they were going to disown her as their friend. Ginny on the other hand would probably throw a bloody party.
Now, Hermione was still herself, and she was planning on being very cautious about the whole situation. She didn't know what she was getting herself into. Yes, it was obvious that Draco cared about her and wanted to try and prove this to her, but she didn't know if she wanted to be with him, or if she even had feelings for him for that matter. But, she had decided that the least she could do was give him a chance and go from there. It couldn't hurt. She hadn't allowed herself to develop feelings for anyone since Cedric, as she didn't want to get hurt again. The horrible part was, is that Harry and Ron still didn't know about hers and Cedric's relationship. They had questioned her and asked her why she didn't ever date, and she just simply waved it off smiling telling them that she was too busy focusing on her schoolwork, which technically, wasn't a lie. She had thrown herself into her studies even more when Cedric passed away in order to try and forget about him, and to make him proud. Her intelligence was on of the things that he had admired about her, and she didn't want his loss to affect that. She knew he would have been extremely disappointed if her grades started to drop because he was gone.
Finding out that Draco Malfoy was in love with her had scared Hermione more than she would have admitted to anyone. The whole idea of love in general scared her. But, she knew she had to get over that fear, otherwise she was going to end up alone, something that she didn't want to happen. It had been three years since she lost Cedric, and a part of her was always going to love him and miss him. Another part of her also knew that she had to let go and move on, and that it's what Cedric would have wanted for her.
Draco had even admitted this to her when they were playing their little game of 21 questions.
She couldn't believe she had opened up and told him, of all people, about Cedric when even her two best friends didn't know about them. She told Ginny, only because Ginny was with her when Cedric's dead body had been brought back by Harry, and Hermione's heart had snapped in half immediately, and she had felt her world tear apart. Ginny had pieced things together quickly, knowing that Hermione had been going on secret days with a secret guy that Hermione would not tell her about. She had felt Hermione's body sag next to her when she had realized that Cedric was gone, and Ginny had to support Hermione and take her back to the castle. Thankfully, she had sneaked Hermione away from questioning eyes before anyone had noticed. When Ginny had taken her back to their dorm that they had shared at the time, Hermione knew from the look of Ginny's face that she had figured it out. Hermione had eventually fallen asleep after being worn out from crying, her head in Ginny's lap, who was trying to comfort her friend to the best of her abilities without bringing up what happened, as it had been too fresh to talk about. Ginny had stayed with Hermione all night, not wanting to leave the girl alone, and when Hermione woke up, she find Ginny sound asleep next to her. Hermione knew it was time to answer questions, and as sad as she was, she knew that she had to tell somebody. She had explained the entire story to Ginny, who had listened quietly throughout the entire thing, and when Hermione finally finished the story and was crying again, Ginny had wrapped her arms around her and told her everything was going to be okay. Hermione was extremely grateful to have had Ginny by her side throughout the whole ordeal, and didn't know if she would have gotten through it without her. From that day forward, her and Ginny had become best friends, and Hermione wouldn't have had it any other way.
This is why Hermione currently found herself walking into the Gryffindor common room.
She spotted Ginny immediately, sitting with Harry and Ron on some of cushions surrounding the fireplace. They had all looked up at her arrival, and greeted her warmly.
"Hermione! There you are" Ron said smiling.
"Hey Ron" Hermione said sitting down.
"So what did Dumbledore want?" Ginny asked.
"He wanted to talk to me about the ball" Hermione stated simply.
"Well what did he tell you?" Harry asked.
Hermione took a deep breath before telling her the information that was going to make both Harry and Ron explode.
"He told me that he wanted me and Malfoy going to the ball together."
"WHAT!" Ron exploded. "Is he bloody mental? Why would he want you and that git going to the ball together?"
"Because we are Head Boy and Girl."
"What did you say?" Ginny asked ignoring her brothers outburst.
Hermione stayed quiet and looked down at her hands.
"She said yes" Harry stated dumbfounded.
"You said YES?" Ron yelled.
"What did you want me to say Ronald" Hermione snapped.
"No would have been a pretty sufficient answer" Ron growled.
"Obviously I wanted to say no" Hermione snapped again, her temper flaring.
"Then why didn't you?" Ron asked angrily.
"Because Dumbledore doesn't exactly give you the opportunity to say no. You know that just as well as I do. I didn't want to disappoint him. I'm Head Girl of the school for merlin's sake."
"Why does he want you guys to go together?" Ginny asked.
"To help promote house unity. He thinks that by me and Malfoy going to the ball together, that maybe other students will follow our example and see that it's not such a big deal."
"That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard" Ron mumbled grumpily.
"Actually, I think it's a good idea" Ginny stated.
"Really?" Harry asked looking over at her.
"Yes I do. The Dark Lord is gone, so why not try and make all the houses get along once and for all? There's nothing holding us all back now from trying to make friends with the rest of the houses. And honestly, some of the people aren't as bad as you think. I think this is a great idea on Dumbledore's part."
"You're just saying that because you associate with one of them" Ron mumbled.
"So? Is that a problem?" Ginny asked narrowing her eyes as she glared at him.
"Nope none at all" Ron said quickly.
"Good."
Hermione smiled and let out a deep breath. They had taken it a lot better than she had hoped, thanks to Ginny's help.
"So who are you guys going to ask to the ball?" Hermione asked looking at Ron and Harry.
"Do we actually have to ask someone?" Harry asked.
"Well you don't have to. It isn't mandatory to go with a date, but it is a ball after all, and you usually don't go to a dance without a date" Hermione stated.
"The ball isn't even mandatory itself. I say we skip it" Ron said looking over at Harry.
"Ronald Weasley you are not skipping out on this ball" Ginny said sternly.
"Why not?" Ron whined.
"Because Hermione pretty much has to go because she's Head Girl, do you honestly want to leave her there all by herself?"
Harry and Ron looked at each other and both said "No."
"Exactly. So grow a pair and both of you go and ask a girl to be your date. I guarantee they will be thrilled! Every girl wants to go to a ball, well, most girls anyways, but a lot of them won't go if they don't have a date. So, get out there and start scoping and see who you want to go with before all of the good ones are gone. Because regardless of if you guys ask someone to go with you or not, you are going. And I will come and drag you both by your ears if I have to. Don't test me." Ginny said menacingly.
"Okay, okay" Ron said putting his hands up in defense.
"Good" Ginny said smiling.
"I already know who I wanted to ask, but she already has a date" Ron said blushing, looking shyly over at Hermione.
"I'm sorry Ron" Hermione said apologetically.
"It's okay, it's not your fault."
Hermione nodded and mentally thanked Dumbledore for making her go with Draco. At least now she didn't have to hurt Ron's feelings by rejecting him. Ron was a nice guy and all, but she didn't want to lead him on by going to a dance with him. He very obviously still had feelings for her, even with her dodging and ignoring them. And even if she told him they were just going to the dance as friends, she knew that deep down it would mean more to him than that.
"Me and Hermione will help you guys get dates" Ginny said suddenly.
Ron and Harry both looked over at Ginny interestedly.
"And how to you suppose you are going to do that?" Harry inquired.
"Easy. Me and Hermione will look for the best candidates for you. We can ask around and see who all needs a date and who is interested in going, maybe throw your guys' name around saying that you are both looking for someone to take and see who's all available and interested. And we'll come back with a list for you guys to choose from"
"Gin if you did that you would be my life saver. I'm not exactly the best at asking girls to the dance.. Remember what happened with Fleur?" Ron asked his ears going red.
Everyone laughed at this recalling the memory.
"Yeah, let's not have a repeat of that shall we mate?" Harry asked Ron wrapping an arm around his neck.
Ginny clapped her hands together and said "Well, that's that. We will start tomorrow morning at breakfast and just ask around. I'm telling you now I'm going to be asking around to all of the houses. So keep an open mind. And who knows, maybe we will all be surprised at who wants to go to the ball with you."
"I refuse to go with a Slytherin" Ron said immediately.
Ginny rounded on Ron and said "Ronald, the whole point of this ball is to try and get the houses to unionize and get along. I am going to be asking everyone, so get over it. That doesn't mean that you have to go with them. Dumbledore wants us to try and get along with all of the houses. It's people like you that he is referring to with holding grudges. The Dark Lord is gone! There aren't any more Death Eaters wandering around so we have nothing to worry about. And who knows, maybe a Slytherin will surprise you"
Hermione noticed that Ginny had looked at her when she had said that last statement.
"Whatever just get us the names" Ron said dismissing the conversation.
"I hope you're not as thick headed as my idiot brother" Ginny said looking at Harry.
Hermione, upon seeing the look on Ron's face interjected and said "Gin, can I talk you for a minute?"
Both Harry and Ron looked at her.
"It's about the kind of dress I want" Hermione said quickly.
Ginny raised her eyebrow.
"Are you guys cool if me and Ginny head back to my dorm to talk?" Hermione asked.
"Yeah, go. We don't know anything about dresses. And dress talk for us is like Quidditch talk for you. So feel free."
Hermione stood up and turned to Ginny. "You coming?"
"Lead the way" Ginny said standing up.
Hermione walked to the portrait hole and yelled a goodbye over her shoulder to Ron and Harry.
When they were in the hallway Ginny turned to Hermione.
"I know you do not want to talk about dresses, so what do you really want to talk about?"
"I don't know how Harry and Ron don't pick up on things like you do. They know me almost as well, and yet they believed me when I said I wanted to talk about dresses."
"They're guys. They think that all girls like to talk about clothes and shopping. Totally stereotypical. But, enough of that, what did you want to actually talk to me about? Clearly it's something that you don't want Harry and Ron to know, so I'm assuming it has something to do with Malfoy?"
"Good guess" Hermione stated.
"Well, what about him?" Ginny asked intrigued.
"Well don't be so sad about it.." Hermione said sarcastically.
"Oh shut up, and stop stalling."
"Alright, alright. Well obviously you know that me and him are going to the ball together.."
"Yes, you may have mentioned that."
"Well anyways, after Dumbledore talked to us in the Great Hall, we walked out together and I approached him and asked him why he would agree to what Dumbledore had said. Obviously I was going to say I was okay with the two of us going to the ball together too because I can't say no to Dumbledore, but he spoke up and told Dumbledore it was okay before I could. "
"Then what happened?"
"Then he said he knew that I didn't want to go with him, and I saw that saying that upset him, so I asked him about it and then he snapped on me, apologizing afterwards."
"He apologized to you for snapping on you?"
"Yeah he did."
"What else happened?"
"Well then all of a sudden he was confessing his feelings for me, which I have to admit was a little overwhelming."
"What did he say?!" Ginny exclaimed.
"He told me it was hard to be so close to me every day but yet so far away, and that getting the chance to know me made him come to admire me. He called me his equal.. He also said that he's never felt the way he does about me towards anyone else before."
"Oh my god!" Ginny squealed.
"Ginny! You're way too excited about this" Hermione stated.
"I'm sorry but it is exciting!
"Well, there's more."
"Tell me!"
"Okay, okay, calm down. He told me he can't pretend anymore. That me ignoring him every day bugs him more than he cares to admit. He said that he told Dumbledore that he was okay with us going to the ball together because he wants to go with me, that he couldn't picture himself going with anyone else."
Hermione's face flushed while saying this last sentence.
"Hermione! That is so cute!" Ginny exclaimed.
Hermione rolled her eyes.
"What did you say back to him?"
"I told him that I'm confused and I don't know what to do. I told him that while I was under the influence of the love potion I saw a side of him that I never would have believed existed if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. I told him that it's all confusing for me because I went from one minute being in love with him, to the next being back to normal and being confused. I also admitted to him that I knew how the love potions spell broke."
"You told him you knew how the potions spell broke? What did he say?"
"He asked me how the potions spell was broken, I think he wanted to hear me say it and see if I had come to the right conclusion."
"And?"
"So I told him how it was broken. That he had to be in love with me."
"What did he say after that?"
"He asked me if it was a bad thing. And I said I don't know. Because I don't."
"That's fair" Ginny stated.
"I guess. Anyways, then he asked me if I would give him the chance to prove himself to me, that he can be the guy he was while I was under the influence of the love potion as long as I gave him the chance to do it. He said that if after I give him the chance and I still don't want anything to do with him, that he will leave me alone."
"WHAT DID YOU SAY?!"
"I told him I would give him the chance" Hermione said softly.
Ginny's jaw dropped.
"What?" Hermione asked.
"I can't believe this is happening! I am so excited for you!"
"I'm glad you're excited."
"Hermione, this is awesome. You clearly had a reason for giving him a chance, so go for it. It's about time that you tried with someone else. You know Cedric would have wanted it for you. You don't have to rush into this, just take your time with it and see where it goes. No one is saying that things have to work out between Malfoy and you, I'm just proud of you for finally giving someone else a chance, because I know how hard that must have been for you."
Hermione felt tears spring into her eyes. "It is hard Gin."
"And I know that. As much as it might seem like I am trying to push you into this thing with Malfoy, it's only because I want to see you happy again. And for a split time, while you were under the love potion, you were happy, and I want to see that again. And if that means it's with Malfoy, then so be it."
"But it's Mal.. Draco Gin."
"Draco?" Ginny asked an eyebrow raised.
"He told me to call him by his first name, so I mine as well get used to it" Hermione said shrugging.
"He told you he wants you to call him by his first name?"
"Yeah."
"Well still, I am proud of you for giving someone a chance finally, even if it is Malfoy" Ginny stated.
"I still don't even know how I feel about it." Hermione said honestly.
"I know. I can see that. But still, at least you are trying. And that's something you haven't done in a long time. Ron's been interested in you forever, and you've told me about the other guys who have asked you out, and you've rejected every single one of them without even giving them a chance. So, the fact that you are finally trying is an awesome step in the right direction."
"Thanks Gin. "
"So go into this thing with a clear mind and really give him a chance. I know he's Draco Malfoy a Pureblood and the guy who made your life hell and all of that crap, but regardless of all of that, he loves you. Give him the chance to prove that to you. And like you said, if you don't feel anything, then tell him and he will leave you alone. But don't keep your walls up, you have to break the down in order to completely give someone a chance."
"I'm going to try. But I can't make any promises."
"As long as you try then that's all I care about."
"I'm going to try. But what about Harry and Ron? They aren't exactly going to be ecstatic…"
"Hermione, if they are truly your best friend, then they support your decision regardless of if they agree with it or not as long as it's what makes you happy. And, if they don't, I can be really persuasive."
"Yeah but you're understanding, them, not so much."
"If you end up really caring about Malfoy and are serious about wanting to be with him and they see that, then they will eventually come around to it."
"Well, let's not jump ahead of ourselves here. I don't even know what I want yet, right now I'm giving Malf…Draco a chance, I don't know where that is even headed yet. So, I'm just going to take things day by day, and if something does happen then I will talk to Harry and Ron about it when the time comes. There is no point in telling them anything and getting them all worked up over something that could potentially be nothing."
"That's a good plan. And I will be there with you through every step of the way" Ginny said wrapping her arm around Hermione's shoulders.
Hermione smiled at her friend and said "Thanks. Anyways, how are things with you and Zabini?"
Ginny's face flushed.
Hermione raised her eyebrows and said "Spill."
"Well, when we left you and Malfoy in your common room, hoping that the two of you would talk, me and Zabini did a little bit of ughh.. talking ourselves" Ginny said her cheeks now as red as her hair.
"Define talking" Hermione said smirking.
"Okay, fine there was little talking involved. It was mostly our mouths exploring each others."
"Ginny Weasley!" Hermione exclaimed.
"What!" Ginny asked embarrassed.
"Look at you, fraternizing with the enemy. No wonder you want me and D..Draco together! Because then you wouldn't feel so bad about you and Zabini being together!" Hermione exclaimed.
"That is NOT why I want you and Malfoy together!" Ginny said defensively.
"Well fine, seemed like legitimate reason."
Ginny smacked Hermione gently.
"Well, so what's going on with you guys then? Are you dating or?"
"No we're not dating. I would say we're more taking things day by day like you are going to do with Malfoy."
"But you like him" Hermione stated.
Ginny blushed. "I think I do."
"Have you told him?"
"What! No!" Ginny exclaimed.
"Well why not?" Hermione asked.
"I don't know. I don't know how he feels, and I don't really know what's going on between us. It's not like either of us have ever expressed our feelings to each other, we just kind of talk about you and Malfoy and make out."
"You guys talk about me and Draco?"
"Sometimes."
"What about?"
"Just different things, mostly on how we both want the two of you together."
"Zabini wants me and Draco together?" Hermione asked confused.
"Yes he does."
"Ohhhh.."
"Yeah. So, what do you want to do? We have the rest of the night to do whatever we want because Harry and Ron think we are going to be talking about dresses."
"Want to go back to my dorm and hang out?" Hermione asked.
"Sure! Maybe Malfoy will be there" Ginny said winking at Hermione.
Hermione narrowed her eyes at Ginny. "Shut up."
Ginny linked her arm through Hermione's. "This is going to be so much fun! We can plan to go out on double dates or something!"
Hermione laughed and shook her head. "You're an idiot."
"Nope, just a hopeless romantic" Ginny said batting her eyelashes.
Hermione said the password, and the two of them made their way into their dorm, where they found Draco and Blaise once again sitting on the couches in their common room.
"Hey guys" Ginny said bouncing her way over to where they were sitting, a big smile on her face.
Draco looked at her confused.
Blaise smirked at her and said "Well hello there gorgeous."
Draco looked at Blaise and said "What did you just call her?"
Blaise looked over at Draco and winked.
"Are you two like, together?" Draco asked dumbfounded.
"Not technically" Blaise said smoothly.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Draco asked.
"Nothing" Blaise said smirking.
"Do you like her?" Draco asked.
Hermione and Ginny both turned to look at Blaise waiting for his answer. Blaise turned his head and looked at Ginny who was sitting beside him, her eyes wide waiting to hear his answer.
"She's alright" Blaise said winking at Ginny and then turning back to look at Draco.
"How the hell did that happen?" Draco asked as he sat back and spread his arms across the back of the couch he was sitting on.
"It just sort of did." Blaise said smoothly.
Ginny felt her heart leap in her chest. He liked her. She couldn't help the huge smile that spread across her face.
Draco looked over and saw Hermione still standing by the door.
"You going to come and join this circle?" Draco asked patting the seat beside him.
Hermione let out a deep breath and said "Sure."
She sat beside Draco, and looked over at Ginny who had a big smile on her face, and her eyes were sparkling. Hermione knew why she was happy, Blaise had pretty much just admitted that he had feelings for her. Ginny nodded her head at Hermione approvingly.
The minute Hermione sat down, Draco had felt the heat emanating from her body. He could faintly smell the perfume that she was wearing. He tried so hard not to scoot closer to her, to press his body up against hers. He knew he had to take things slow and not push things onto her, he was thankful she had even agreed to giving him a chance in the first place, he didn't want to end up blowing it the day it started.
"So what are you ladies up to tonight?" Blaise asked.
"We were going to talk about the dresses we were going to be wearing to the ball" Ginny said winking at Hermione.
"Sounds interesting for a girl" Blaise said.
"What are you guys doing?" Ginny asked.
"Well, me and Draco here were talking about the ball, and how Dumbledore suggested that our two Heads of the school go together."
"Oh yeah?" Ginny asked.
"Yep. And you know, since Dumbledore thinks that the two of them going together is supposed to inspire other people from enemy houses to go together, I was thinking that me and you should go together also. Really make people talk." Blaise said.
"Are you asking me to go to the ball with you?" Ginny asked, the excitement evident in her voice.
"Maybe" Blaise said smoothly.
"Well in that case, maybe I accept."
"Ugh get a room you two" Draco stated.
"Mind if we borrow yours?" Blaise asked winking.
Ginny shoved Blaise lightly.
Draco looked over at Hermione and saw that she was smiling at her friend. Draco couldn't help but let a small smile appear on his face because she was smiling.
"Do you guys know when Dumbledore is allowing everyone the time to go dress shopping?" Ginny asked suddenly.
"He hasn't mentioned anything yet, why?" Hermione asked.
"I was just wondering so I can make sure to clear my schedule" Ginny stated.
"Girls and their shopping, I will never understand it" Draco drawled.
"That's because you're a guy and these types of events are easy for you, all you have to do is go and get fitted for a suit, we have to try on about a million dresses until we finally find one that we fall in love with. It's a time consuming process" Ginny stated.
"If I was a girl I would go for the most revealing thing I could find" Blaise said evilly.
"Of course you would you pig" Ginny said.
Blaise smirked in response.
"As much fun as this little hang out has been, I think I am heading out. Care to join me?" Blaise asked offering his hand to Ginny.
"Yeah sure, I just need to talk to Hermione quick" Ginny said standing up and grabbing Hermione's arm, pulling her with her into Hermione's room.
"What's up?" Hermione asked.
"It's Friday night, meaning that we don't have class tomorrow. So spend some time with Malfoy, even if it's just hanging in the common room. Don't lock yourself in your bedroom the minute we leave, because then you're not giving him a chance. Allow yourself the time to get to know him. And there is no better way then getting to know a person then when you are alone." Ginny said.
"Okay fine, I won't lock myself in my room. I haven't really been around him much with just the two of us since the love potion broke, I don't know how to act. And I don't know what to say. It would be so much easier if we hated each other, at least that way I know how to act, and that is something that I am used to."
"Well sorry chicky, but he doesn't hate you, and you don't hate him. You may not be in love with him like he is with you, but you don't hate him, so get used to it."
Hermione let out a deep breath.
"I just don't want to hurt him" Hermione said softly.
"You won't" Ginny stated confidently.
"And how do you know that?"
"Because I know you. If you weren't interested in him in the slightest you wouldn't have agreed to giving him a chance. So clearly there is something about him that is intriguing to you. Hell, I wouldn't blame you if you were giving him a chance because of his looks. He is the best looking guy at this school."
"Gin! It has nothing to do with his looks. And really? You think he's the best looking guy at this school?"
"Oh honestly Hermione, you know it's the truth. Every girl here knows it. You just never realized because of your hate for him."
"I guess.." Hermione said slowly.
"It's true. Once you actually look at him you will know what I'm talking about. Anyways, like I was saying, there's something about him that made you say yes to giving him a chance, so explore it. Don't hold back."
"It's not that easy for me Gin.."
"I know it's not. But, he will help you along the way. He's going to try and prove himself to you, so let him. Don't shoot him down, just go with the flow and see where it takes you. You can do this Hermione, I know you can."
"Okay" Hermione said confidently.
"And don't be afraid to have feelings for him. And if you do start to feel anything don't push them away because you're afraid. He's probably just as afraid, if not more. He's the one trying to pursue you and prove himself to you, someone he tormented the past six years of his life. I'm sure he doesn't forget the way that he used to treat you, and he knows he has to try and make up for that, so take it easy on him. Understand that this is just as hard as it is for him as it is for you, especially considering he's told you he's never felt this way about anyone else before."
"I will try my best."
"That's all I'm asking. And Hermione, if things don't work out between the two of you, I won't be mad. I will be proud of you for finally putting yourself out there again and trying. Hell, I'm already proud of you. But, do give him a chance and don't write him off already. And if you're not happy with the way things are, then at least you tried and that's enough in itself."
"Thanks Gin" Hermione said hugging her friend.
"What are friends for?" Ginny asked returning the hug.
