Chapter 33
Sirius
The first days of the holiday passed much in the same fashion. In the morning I would go out with Lydia for a walk, after lunch we usually went our separate ways, usually she stayed at the pool side, where Lex often joined her. I didn’t like laying about so usually I would go with whatever form of entertainment was provided. My parents expected us to join them for dinner on the fourth night of our stay. It was something we rarely did, even at home, and I always hated sharing a meal with my parents. I felt like we were never on the same page about anything.
As I had expected, my mother grilled me about Lydia throughout that diner. She had heard that we had spent a lot of time together, which had spiked her curiosity. I tried to answer her questions as well as possible. I had noticed that Lex, was sharing the table behind my father with a dark haired man whose name I couldn’t recall. Every so often Regulus’ eyes wandered over to their table, it wasn’t until I saw the dark haired man winking at him that Lydia’s words came back to me ‘Regulus is as gay as father Christmas’. Maybe she was right.
I shifted my focus on Lex, I tried to be subtle about it, but Regulus kicked my shin underneath the table and whispered ‘quit staring at her.’ I must have been to obvious. When my parents left the table, Regulus poked me, and motioned for the table that Lex and the dark haired stranger were at. ‘Can we join you?’ he asked politely. The dark haired man pulled out the chair next to him, leaving me to sit next to Lex. Close up I saw that she looked tired, she had dark circles underneath her eyes, and she looked like she could burst out in tears any minute. ‘You know Tom, Sirius?’ Lex asked me as soon as I sat down. I didn’t, so I held out my hand for him to shake ‘Sirius Black’ I introduced myself. He took my hand, and shook it ‘Tom Gaunt’ he said. A waiter interrupted us ‘Shall I bring you some coffee or tea, Sir?’ he asked, the question directed at Tom, who, in his turn looked at Lex. She seemed pensive for a minute ‘I think it best if I retire for the night’ she said, as she stood, we all rose from our seats. ‘See you tomorrow?’ she addressed Tom, he nodded at her ‘5 am, don’t be late’ he told her in an authorative tone that I didn’t like. ‘Good night gentlemen’ she said to us with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. I grabbed her arm as she passed me ‘I’ll walk you to your room’ I told her in a fit of gallantry. She didn’t protest, and I decided not to comment on my brother’s raised eyebrow. Probably he’d ask me about it at breakfast.
Outside there was a light breeze, which made Lex shiver, so I shrugged out of my diner jacket, and draped it over her shoulders. ‘I’m fine’ she protested, trying to take the garment off again. I fixed it around her shoulders ‘You’re not fine Lex, don’t lie to me, you look like the living dead.’ I hadn’t meant to snap at her, she was just so stubborn that it annoyed me. She made a hmpf sound, and walked away, leaving me standing outside alone. ‘Wait up’ I told her. Of course she didn’t, I drew level with her, and put my hand on her shoulder to make her stop, I spun her around so that she was facing me. ‘Aren’t you supposed to be walking this living dead, ugly girl home?’ she said angrily. ‘Hey, I never said you were ugly’ I defended myself, where did that come from? ‘I just meant that you look tired, as if you haven’t slept in four days.’ I hoped she would believe me just this once. ‘Maybe that’s because I haven’t’ she said. I was surprised, of course the jetlag was a problem for everyone, but most people had gotten over that by now. ‘Why is that?’ I asked her offering her my arm, grateful that she took it. I realised that I had no idea where her room was, so I let her take the lead. At first it seemed that she wouldn’t reply, we had reached her door by the time she did ‘nightmares’ she said. She opened the door and let me in first. ‘They feel so real that I don’t want to go to sleep’ she continued as she closed the door. I sat down on the recliner, while she sat on the bed. I had never seen this side of her, in all the years I had known her, it was as if nothing could shake Lex. She seemed so strong all the time, yet right now, in her sleep deprived state, she was so fragile. ‘Why don’t you take some dreamless sleep?’ I asked her, that’s what my mother often did. ‘Severus said that you can get addicted to them, so I’d rather not.’ She answered me. How could she have shared this with Snape? That was impossible, she hadn’t seen him since we left school, had she?
‘When did you see him? I asked her, the change in tone must have been to obvious, because she stood up again, crossed her arms, and glared at me. ‘I wrote to him, and he wrote back, not that it is any of your business’ she said, her voice raising. Now I had really made her angry, I felt my own temper raising to match hers. ‘WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT’S NONE OF MY BUSINESS?’ I shouted at her. ‘YOU HAVE MADE IT VERY CLEAR THAT YOU DON’T WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH ME, YOU’RE CONSTANTLY FLIRTING WITH LYDIA, I’M JUST THE ANNOYING GIRLS WHO’S TRYING TO BE YOUR FRIEND! She hit a nerve there ‘but I’m never going to be good enough for you, am I?’ she asked, her voice breaking a little on that last sentence. ‘LYDIA HAD ONLY BEEN TRYING TO HELP ME, LIKE A FRIEND WOULD WHILE YOU HAVE BEEN BUSY DOING MERLIN ONLY KNOWS WHAT WITH SNAPE, MY BROTHER AND NOW THIS TOM-GUY!’ She looked as if I had slapped her in the face. ‘Get out, now!’ she said, opening the door with a wandless non-verbal. I didn’t even get the chance to leave on my own accord, I felt her magic pushing me out of the room. As soon as I was out, the door closed again, and I took a few deep breaths to calm myself. I couldn’t hear anything from within the room, probably she had sound proofed it. I left the building, and walked back to my own room. I couldn’t shake the image of her sitting on the bed, looking so fragile. Her words also echoed back to me ‘I’m never going to be good enough for you, am I?’
My supposed relation with Lydia still seemed to make Lex Jealous, which had been the reaction Lydia wanted. Maybe we should lay low for a while. As I got into bed, I thought that tomorrow, I would talk to Lydia.
