Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Disclaimer: Harry Potter and all the characters and places of Potterverse belong to the brilliant J.K. Rowling. Everything else is mine so keep your hands
off of it unless you want me to sic Severus on you!
A/N: OMG. Okay, guys, please don’t think that I’m being
coy or over dramatic, but the reviews you’ve been leaving have seriously just
brought me to tears. It is always
wonderful to know that what you’re doing is appreciated and I know that there
are probably quite a few people who haven’t liked what I’m doing or it just
wasn’t their thing, but those of you who are enjoying it and letting me know
are just blowing me away. Writing is
what my life is all about. You’re such
an inspiration, urging me on and letting me know when I’m slipping up and I
just wanted you guys to know how much I appreciate you. There are only six chapters left (counting
this one) in the story and I want you all to know that the past six months of
writing have been worth every moment, every bit of frustration with plot, and all
the time I spent away from my original pieces.
When Numen Pumilum is
complete it will be the first full, novel length piece I’ve completed, pushing
(and maybe even passing) 200,000 thousand words. You guys did that and you rock.
Love, Auctor

Chapter 30: So Much for Harmless Books
June 2nd
Eris watched Roslyn as patiently
as she could manage. She could sense that Severus was near by and needed to
report something to her. As the DADA
teacher cast a few more spells, Eris decided to try and hurry the process
along. “So, how are the little ones
doing?”
Roslyn smiled at her and Eris
forced herself to respond in kind.
“They’re wonderful, Eris. You’ve
got little to worry about now that you’re out of the first trimester. Just keep eating lots of vegetables and
drinking lots of milk. Stay away from
the Chocolate Frogs and keep a shield firmly in place around your abdomen
whenever you and Harry are practicing.”
Eris nodded. “When will the power leeching begin?”
Roslyn sighed. “Yes, I suppose we do need to be worried
about that. Typically, magical infants
do not start leeching power from their mothers until the final month of the
last trimester. However, I’ve been
reading up on pregnancies involving multiple infants and you need to add a
month to that for every extra child.
Even though Serena and Regulus are not actually twins, they will still
begin feeding on your magical energies earlier otherwise there’s a risk of them
sapping you completely.”
“The war will be long over by then,” Eris said
quietly. “All I need to worry about is
keeping them safe through the final battle.”
Roslyn put a hand on her
shoulder. “You need to consider staying
out of this, Eris. I know that you’re
stronger than most of us combined, but you’ve said yourself that Harry’s power
is nearly double your own. Why take the
risk of losing your children?”
Eris looked into her old friend’s
blue eyes, shimmering with tears. “We
won’t lose them, Ros.
It’s all taken care of.”
Roslyn smiled.
“I’m glad you’ve seen reason then,” she said, misunderstanding what Eris
had said.
Eris rose to her feet, her wand
gripped in her hand and hidden in the folds of her robes. “Ros, I want to
thank you for taking such good care of us.”
“It was no problem, kiddo. You know I love you
like a sister.”
Eris nodded. “The feeling has always been returned, my
friend. Obliviate!”
Eris took quick action, using the
stunning effect of the Memory Charm to give her a chance to delve into Roslyn’s
mind. Quickly and effectively she erased
every trace of Roslyn’s memory of Eris’ pregnancy, the twins’ names, and any
other information that Eris had shared that could give away any hint of her
plans. She’d already taken care of
Hermione the day before and Naiya was bound by elven law to keep silent.
As for Ginny…well she wasn’t going to be a problem for much longer. When she was finished, she sat Roslyn down in
a chair and quickly moved to another one in front of the witch.
Roslyn came to
suddenly. “I’m sorry, honey, what were
you saying?”
“You were telling me about your last
class with the third years,” Eris said smoothly. “Something about how disappointed you were
that they all showed so much bias in there papers on werewolves.”
“Oh yes,” Roslyn said quickly. “Now I remember. It was just awful! I mean, in the States, werewolves are better
protected. We have a special group of
jobs created just for them so that they at least have a way to support
themselves. I’ll admit that its not much better, but at least its something. We also have a Wolfsbane
distribution program.”
Eris nodded. “You know, Ros, you
really spaced out there for a while.
Maybe you should go lie down for a while. I can see myself out.”
“Maybe you’re right,” Roslyn said with a
nod. “I’m feeling a bit light headed.”
Eris made quick work of her
goodbye and then hurried into the corridor where Severus was waiting as Nox. Scooping him
up, she rushed out onto the grounds, far from prying ears, and into the Forbidden
Forest. There, Severus transformed and began to relay
what he had learned.
“The Dark Lord is nearly ready to strike,” he
said slowly and Eris could tell that he was struggling deep in his mind to keep
this from her. “He’s eager to try and
regain you. I’ve done as you said and
told him that I think you’re displeased with your current position. I told him that something has been amiss
between you and the others, but that I don’t yet know what it is.”
“Has he set any tasks for you,” Eris asked.
Severus struggled for a moment,
just a brief flicker in his eyes that no one else would notice, and then gave
the information up. “He thinks its time
to make contact with you. He believes
that you have some affection for me after our working together and that you’ll
listen to me. I’m to try and persuade
you to return to his side.”
Eris smirked. “Or kill me if I refuse, of course.”
“Or die trying,” Severus muttered.
Eris sneered at the man. “Why would I want to kill
you, dear heart?”
She paced for a moment,
considering how next to proceed. When
she turned her glare on Severus once again the man shivered, almost as if he
knew exactly what she was going to tell him.
“Return to our master at the time he appointed you, Severus. Tell him that I explained to you that I’ve
been forced to bond with a potential that I did not choose simply because the
Order wished me to be with him. Tell him
that I will come to his side when he calls me, but that I’m planting a few
seeds of mischief that I hope will blossom for him when he brings war to Hogwarts.”
Severus nodded stiffly. “Am I still to report to the Order?”
Eris quirked a
brow at the wizard. “Of course, Severus.
We wouldn’t want them to be unprepared for the fun. It would be such a disappointment if we
couldn’t give the world the battle they’ve been waiting for these past
seventeen years. When you return to the
Dark Lord, do not forget to finish the other task I set for you.”
Severus nodded again. Eris considered him for a moment, smiling
cruelly. “Oh and Severus…I love you.”
The man
looked at her sadly. “As
I love you, Eris.”
He transformed then and scampered
away, most likely to report what he could to McGonagall. Eris sighed as she watched him run off
through the trees. His parting
statement had been sincere. More was the
pity for him.

June 10th
Harry growled in frustration. He, Ron, Hermione, Draco, Blaise, and Greg
had been searching the library all day in vain.
“We’ve been through every shelf in this bloody library! Where the hell could the damned thing be?”
Hermione gave him a pointed look
and he hung his head a bit. “Just
because it’s a book, Harry, does not mean its on the
shelves.”
Someone
patted Harry on the shoulder and he looked up to see Ron give him a wink. The redhead turned towards Hermione. “Sure, ‘Mione, but
we’ve been testing all the statues for trap doors as well.”
Harry looked over at Draco who was
glaring at the Marauder’s Map in disgust.
“There’s nothing on this ruddy map either!”
Blaise held up his hands. “Why don’t we all just take a breath and
rethink what we’ve been over. I mean, we
know it’s in the library, its just a matter of finding
out where. Yes this room is fairly
massive, but there are still only so many places that blasted book could be
hidden.”
They all
moved to sit at a table near a portrait of Merlin. Harry frowned then. He looked over at Draco and asked, “Where’s
Eris anyway? We could really use a fresh
perspective on this.”
“I don’t know,” the blond said, rolling his wand
between his palms. “Come to think of it
I haven’t seen Gin for a while either.”
“They were going out for a walk together,” Greg
said softly. “Eris had some sort of
argument with Nox and it had her real upset.”
“Why in the name of Merlin are they fighting
at a time like this,” Draco roared, only to have an elderly voice from behind
them respond.
“Yes…yes did someone ask for me?”
They all
turned to stare at the portrait of Merlin behind them, a portrait that Harry
was certain he’d never heard of talking before.
“Hello, sir. Er…I
didn’t think you spoke.”
The purple robed
wizard smiled indulgently. “Yes, well,
this is a library and the children are usually quite quiet, surprisingly. When you get to be my age you enjoy long
rests and its easy to sleep…unless of course there’s
someone going about yelling.”
Merlin was giving Draco a pointed
look and Harry smiled as his mate blushed.
He quickly turned back to Merlin.
“Sir, I’m guessing that you’ve been hanging in this library for an
awfully long time. We’re looking for
something, a hidden book to be precise. It’s
very important that we find this book.
The fate of the world depends upon it.”
Merlin frowned. “Well there’s no need to be
melodramatic. What’s the name of this
book you seek?”
Hermione quickly jumped in. “It’s
the very first copy of Hogwarts: A History, the one that was penned out by the eldest
grandson of Rowena Ravenclaw.”
“Ah yes, I know that book,” Merlin said slowly,
“but I don’t think you’re going to like what you must do to get it.”
“We’ve probably been through worse,” Ron said
glumly.
Merlin looked very solemn
then. “I highly doubt that young
man. You must pay for that book with
pain and fear. No tears can save you
once you’ve begun. There is no turning
back, only death or victory.”
By this
point Harry desperately wished that his sister or Severus were with him. “Please, its worth any price. Everyone we love will die if we can’t get that
book.”
The
portrait Merlin considered him for a long moment. “Choose the bravest of you. Power will do you no good. Only strength of mind and spirit can get you
through this test.”
Harry immediately stepped
forward. He couldn’t risk his friends’
lives. He never would if he could help it.
Hermione quickly grabbed a hold of his arm. “Harry, no!
If we lose you the book would do us no good anyway! You’ve got nothing to prove and we need you
whole and healthy.”
“She’s right, mate,” Ron said with a sharp
nod. “You’d best let one of us go and
since you’d be a mess without Draco and Ginny would kill me if I let
Blaise…well it better be me that does it.”
Hermione gasped. “Oh, Ron, no let me do it.”
Someone
shoved past Harry then and his eyes went wide when he saw Greg nearing the
portrait muttering, “Bloody Gryffindors.
So busy trying to save each other that the world could fall on their
heads.”
“Greg, don’t,” Harry cried out, trying to grab
his new friend’s arm..
Greg gave him a fierce look. “I’ve got nothing to lose, Potter. I owe it to Eris to keep the rest of you
safe. You’ve all been good to me, but
without her I would have felt like I had no one.”
Hermione sniffled. “Don’t think like that, Greg. Don’t you think the rest of us would miss you
now too?”
Greg smiled at her. “Maybe, but I know I can do this.”
The Slytherin turned away and
stepped up to the painting, which slid upwards to reveal a hidden
compartment. There sat the book they’d
been searching for, surrounded by a shimmering light. Merlin spoke again then. “The book is yours if you have the courage
and strength to take it. Be warned, once
you reach through the barrier only death awaits he who turns back without the
prize.”
“Cheerful old codger isn’t he,” Ron hissed in
Harry’s ear.
“I’m prepared,” Greg said firmly and wasted no
time reaching out to the barrier.
The
moment the tips of Greg’s fingers slipped through the light, a sizzling sound
filled Harry’s ears. Greg grunted in
pain, but continued to push his hand slowly in, as though he was fighting
against some force pushing back on him.
“Merciless Medea,”
Draco gasped.
Harry shifted a bit for a better
view of what was happening. He instantly
wished he hadn’t. The flesh of Greg’s
hand looked as though it was being boiled away.
The smell hit his nose then and it was all he could do not to be sick
all over himself. Hermione had turned
away and tucked her head underneath Ron’s chin.
Greg was sweating with the exertion and pain. The very tips of his fingers were already
stripped to the bone and he still looked to be six inches from the book.
Harry rushed forward and placed a
hand on Greg’s shoulder. “You can do
this, Greg. You’re almost there.”
Blaise was quickly on Greg’s other
side, whispering similar encouragements.
Draco joined them as well as Ron with Hermione still hiding her face but
mumbling to Greg about how brave he was being.
It seemed
to take an eternity, several millennia of burning flesh and Greg’s grunts of
pain. Harry just knew that if it had
been him he would have been screaming with the pain or at the very least
crying. Greg simply pushed on, sweat
pouring from his forehead. Hermione was
weeping enough for him.
The Slytherin nearly had the book
in his grasp when Harry felt a tremor go through the larger boy. He was about to collapse, which would pull
his arm backwards. Harry shoved Draco
out of the way and looped his arms around Greg’s waist, holding onto him for
dear life and praying he was strong enough to keep him on his feet. Then the book was in Greg’s hand and it all
disappeared. The Slytherin’s
hand was completely unmarred and the book slipped smoothly from out of the barrier.
When they
backed away, the portrait quickly slipped back into place. Merlin was smiling at them. “Well done, young
ones. Your headmaster would be proud.”
Harry nodded to the wizard, who
was quickly slipping back into slumber.
He wrapped an arm around Greg’s shoulders. “Never let it be said that a Slytherin can’t
be the bravest of us all.”

“Eris, where are we going,” Ginny
asked. Eris saw the younger witch’s eyes
flick towards where Nox was perched on her shoulder.
Eris took a quick glance around
before answering. “We’re going to the
Chamber of Secrets, Ginny. It’s the
safest place to hide you until this is over.”
Ginny’s eyes went wide. “I’m not going to hide! I’m going to fight with everyone else.”
Eris increased her grip on Ginny’s
slender arm. “No, you’re not. Do you remember the promise you made me?”
Ginny nodded. “I swore to protect the twins…no matter
what. But what does that have to do with
this?”
“Voldemort’s army is
gathering outside the castle as we speak, Ginny,” Eris said quietly. “I can feel him calling and he is very near.”
“Do the others know,” Ginny asked.
“Severus alerted them that Voldemort was
mobilizing,” Eris said smoothly. “After
I’m sure you’re safe, I’ll make sure that his presence is known.”
“I still don’t understand how hiding me away
is going to help the twins,” Ginny said as they moved into Moaning Myrtle’s
bathroom.
“Do you remember me explaining to you that you
will be able to serve as Harry and Draco’s surrogate,” Eris asked quickly. She hissed out in Parseltongue,
making the entrance to the Chamber open.
“Yes,” Ginny said slowly. “But…”
“I found a way to transfer the twins to you,”
Eris cut in. “I would hide myself to
keep them safe, but I’m going to be needed in the battle and I can’t keep them
with me anymore.”
“Until after its
over,” Ginny said. It was a question,
but Eris ignored it.
“I’m counting on you to do this for me, Ginny,”
Eris said firmly. “Harry will not be
properly taken care of if I’m not on the battle field. Nox will stay with
you and take care of you until he’s needed in the battle.”
Eris motioned for Ginny to enter
the chute to the Chamber then and the girl complied with a frown. Eris took Nox into
her hands and quickly followed after her.
When she landed at the bottom, she took a hold of Ginny once again and
hurried towards the Chamber entrance.
Once they were inside she led the girl to a small living area she’d
discovered during her last visit. “I
prepared this for your stay. It could
take a few days before this is all over.”
“What’s that,” Ginny asked, pointing towards a
large sack in the corner of the room. It
was moving a bit.
“Something that Severus will deal with,” Eris
said briskly. “Do not open it for any
reason. Now, I need your permission to
perform the transfer. Can you do this
for me, Ginny? I know that you want to
fight, but these children need you more at this point.”
Eris fixed her expression into one
of pleading concern and waited for Ginny’s answer. She could not force this on her. It didn’t work that way.
Ginny’s face became
determined. “I’ll do it. Harry needs you more than he needs me and I’d
never forgive myself if you lost the twins because of some stray hex.”
Eris nodded. “Thank you, Ginny.”
Eris stepped close to the girl and
then put her hands across her own abdomen and closed her eyes. She quietly began to chant the elven incantation, summoning the elemental powers within
her to turn the children into a kind of essence. When that was done she moved her hands to
Ginny’s abdomen and spoke the next incantation, placing the children within the
younger witch. After a moment, she opened
her eyes, fighting off the few tears that wanted to be shed. “It’s done.”
Ginny seemed in awe of what had
happened. “I can feel them,” she
whispered and rubbed her abdomen. “Hey
there, guys. I’m your Auntie Ginny.”
Eris set Nox
on the ground and nodded for him to transform.
Then she turned back to Ginny.
“Take good care of them for me, Gin.”
“I will,” Ginny said solemnly. “Just…please…come back in one piece.”
Eris nodded stiffly and looked to
Severus. “When you’re no longer needed
down here there is a broom in the closet so that you can reach the battle.”
Severus nodded slowly. He was fighting against the curse and potion
again. “Eris…please…reconsider
what you’re doing.”
Eris shook her head. “We all have to do what we must, Severus, and
this is how things have to be.”
She walked back to the doorway and
glanced back once at the pair. She could
feel in her mind that Severus was struggling furiously now, but he wouldn’t
escape. The potion didn’t work like
that. There were no loopholes. Ginny looked confused, but said nothing. Eris thought that there was something that
she should say, but no words seemed appropriate to the fate she’d set for these
two people she’d called her friend and love.
She summoned the second broom from the closet and left without another
word. It was time for her to rejoin the
Dark Lord.
_______________________________________________________________________
“Are you sure we have to destroy it, Harry,”
Hermione said mournfully.
Harry rolled his eyes at his
friend. “I’m sorry, ‘Mione. I know you love books and that this seems
like a crime, but without Severus here I have no idea how to destroy the Horcrux without destroying the book as well.”
Hermione nodded and moved to join
Ron, who was walking off towards one of the windows, a strange expression on
his face. Harry motioned for the others
to back away and pointed his wand at the book at shouted, “Liber Evenescus!”
The book fizzled from sight, like
a disintegrating piece of ash. Draco was
giving him a pointed look. “You’re lucky
that worked, Potter! Where did you learn
Latin?”
Harry rolled his eyes. “Oh, stuff it, Draco. I was flying by the seat of my pants
here. The damned thing’s gone isn’t
it? Now all we have to do is track down
Voldemort since Nagini is bound to be near him.”
“Er…I don’t think
that will be a problem, mate,” Ron called from over by the window. He and Hermione were staring out the window
with terrified expressions.
Draco and Harry ran to the window
and what they saw made Harry’s blood run cold.
On the grounds of Hogwarts stood an army, dressed in black robes and
white masks. There could be no less than
two hundred of them counting the dozen or so giants that were at the back of
the lines.
Harry grabbed a hold of Draco’s
hand and heard his mate whisper, “Sweet Circe, save us.”
Harry knew at this point that
prayers to a long dead witch couldn’t help them now.
