The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 33
When Hetty and Lucy descended the steps from Gringott’s bank, Arthur Weasley was there to meet them.
“Madam Grindelwald, how nice to see you again. And Miss Grindelwald, I am looking forward to our little adventure into muggletown.”
“Muggletown? Oh right, London. Thanks for agreeing to take me Mr Weasley, and erm, will you call me Lucy.”
“I will indeed. Shall we go?”
Lucy gave Hetty one last hug, then followed Arthur along Diagon Alley until they reached the archway that led to the back yard of the Leaky Cauldron. She stuck close to him as they wound their way through the busy bar and exited the pub into London proper.
“Right, where do you need to go first?”
Lucy looked left and right, she wasn’t cowed at being in such a large city, more the fact was she wanted to buy things of a personal nature. In the excitement of discovering she was finally being allowed to go to the kind of shops she knew about, it had not struck her that her escort was not exactly a suitable knicker buying companion. “Err, Mr Weasley this is a bit embarrassing. I need to buy some… well, girl things.”
Arthur smiled. “And I’m an old married man with seven children who does not have a clue how to be discrete when a young lady wishes to purchase items of a more personal nature. Six of my children may be boys, but I do have a daughter and a wife. Come on.”
Surprised, and feeling rather foolish, Lucy followed Arthur as they walked along several streets. “This is what I believe is called ‘West End.’ Now I must stay with you whatever shop you choose to enter, but rest assured I no more wish to see what you are buying than you wish me to see. Alright?”
“Yes Mr Weasley. Thank you.”
Arthur said he would follow Lucy from now on, and it was not long before he regretted that statement.
Lucy was lost in the world of ladies fashion, along with a few less reputable looking shops, the contents of which caused Arthur’s ears to redden when he looked round. She had money to spend, more than she’d ever thought to have in her life and she intended to enjoy every minute of spending it.
After suffering for almost three hours, he suggested they find somewhere reasonably secluded so he could at least reduce the many bags and packages Lucy seemed to have acquired.
“Ah yeah. Sorry Mr Weasley, I got a bit carried away.” Then she grinned at him. “Charlie told me you like gadgets.” She whispered.
Arthur seemed surprised. “Well yes, yes I do. He told you that?”
“Yep. And that’s what I’m gonna be looking at next.”
“Really, what kind of gadgets? Will they have batteries? I have a whole collection of them you know, can’t get them to work though.”
“I promise you Mr Weasley, some of my gadgets will have batteries, the others run off electric, and they will work.”
“Oh dear, that might be a problem. You see we don’t have ekletric in… where we come from.” He whispered.
All the time they were talking, Lucy was making a bee line for a shop they passed earlier. It had exactly what she was looking for. “Mr Weasley you’ve been really patient with me, and I’m grateful for that, so now I’m going to ask you to trust me, just a little bit. Once we get back to grans I’ll have a surprise for you.”
Arthur gave her a puzzled frown, but once they entered the computer shop he was staggered. He was more than happy to let a young assistant lead him round the store, showing him an array of computers while Lucy made for the counter and told another assistant exactly what she wanted.
An hour later, she was the one dragging Arthur from the shop and down an alley so they could reduce her purchases. In all she bought a laptop, 3-in-1 printer/copier and scanner, digital camera, several reams of paper, card, and photo quality paper. She had a large stack of cd-rw’s, soft ware, and a dozen flash drives, plus a couple of new mobile phones. If gran made her go back to that monolithic bastion, she at least wanted to know they could get in touch with each other at a moments notice. Once everything was reduced, she dragged him to ‘The Gadget Shop,’ made two more purchases and told him she was ready to go home.
By now Arthur did not want to go, this last shop held his attention as no other had ever done, but he promised Hetty they would not be too late and with a disappointed sigh, they made their way back to the Leaky Cauldron. From there it was a quick apparition to Hogsmead and a short stroll to Grindelwald cottage.
“Good grief Lucy, what have you bought?” Hetty was a little overwhelmed with the amount of bags and boxes that seemed to be filling her living room as one item after another was enlarged.
“Well these are… personal.” Lucy placed the bags containing clothing and underwear to one side. “This is for Mr Weasley, to say thank you for being so patient with me today.”
Arthur’s jaw dropped a mile when Lucy handed him a small, hand held TV, complete with a 4½
"
colour screen and a set of batteries. He actually stuttered when Lucy held onto the small instrument for a moment and it came to life. She showed him how to tune it to pick up various channels and Arthur Weasley went home an extremely happy wizard.
“And this is for you gran. Well, us really, but it‘s mostly for you.”
Hetty stared at the small black box in her hand, wondering what on earth it was. “Thank you dear, it’s lovely. What is it?”
Laughing, Lucy showed her grandmother how to work the mobile phone. She explained the various functions until Hetty was completely bamboozled, then simply showed her once more which button to press if ever she needed to contact Lucy in an emergency.
“Why can’t I just floo you dear? Or even send Maxi? And my patronus is quite distinctive you know.”
“I know gran, you showed it to me. But think about it, what if you drop your wand or something, or it gets broken, or you don’t feel well enough to… ? Just keep it in your pocket gran, please. Hey, I’ll be able to send you pictures from the castle, unless of course you’re willing to let me study from home full time.”
“No. You are going to Hogwarts my girl and that’s an end to it. Now tell me what that thing is.”
Lucy unpacked the laptop, held onto it until it came to life and booted up, then tried to explain to Hetty about learning over the internet. “I’ll still be able to take my GCSE’s, the man in the computer shop gave me a list of sites to visit so I can arrange it all. Gran I might still have a chance to get onto uni if I do this. And it’ll be useful with my work at Hogwarts as well. We did IT at my last school and I was pretty good, so I should be able to develop a program that will help me catch up with the others in my year. Isn’t it cool?”
Hetty had no idea what ‘cool’ meant, nor did she have a clue as to what her granddaughter was talking about as she tried to explain the computer. It was even more confusing than the phone.
“Oh and I got fish and chips for tea. Mr Weasley put a charm or something on them to keep them hot and fresh. All we need to do is add the salt and vinegar.”
Shaking her head, Hetty took the small white carrier that Lucy absently indicated, into the kitchen, while Lucy herself continued to unpack the rest of the items she bought to use along with the machine. The old witch had to admit though, the fish and chips made it worth putting up with all the clutter, they were delicious.
