Living Chapter 33
The pushing and shoving needed to stop. He didn't need anyone to be that annoying this early in the day.
"Stop it, Harry!" Ron stopped walking long enough to turn around and shove Harry back with force. Harry stumbled back but caught himself before falling. Harry grabbed Ron and pushed him into a dark alcove to talk in privacy.
Harry grabbed his wand from his pants pocket and cast Muffliato and with a glare stood in Ron's path. "Let's hear it. What has turned you into a huge idiot that doesn't eat? Don't you know just that fact alone is sending up a distress call for all of the world to see?"
Harry now red-faced, his hands gesturing into the air yelled out, "Students and teachers, Ronald Weasley isn't eating so something catastrophic has happened and this is his way of telling all of you to watch him because he's soon going to explode with all of his secrets."
Ron stood stone faced staring at Harry as he went on his tirade. He wanted to say something but couldn't get a word in as Harry wouldn't stop talking.
Finally, he spoke in a whisper,"I have to kill…" His words became stuck in his throat as if he'd swallowed something wide and sharp and Harry stopped walking to look over at him.
"My assignment to become a Death Eater is I have to kill someone. The someone they assigned is someone I haven't liked ever in my life and everyone knows it. My biggest problem is it will be hard to get to him. At least that's what they were explaining to me. If I don't complete my assignment I could die or if they are feeling nice that day they'll just Obliviate me"
Ron's words had come out so fast he had to take a deep breath to give himself some much-needed air. Harry looked dumbstruck as he stood silently observing him. "So, who is it? Who do they want you to...kill?"
Ron opened his mouth, taking a deep breath and said…
Hermione seemed to have been wandering around for forty minutes with no sign of Ron or Harry. Ginny hadn't seen them since breakfast and no one else had any clue where her two friends were. The only place she hadn't looked was out at the Quidditch pitch and chances were high that was probably where they were.
"Miss Granger, might I have a word with you?" Head Mistress McGonagall asked in her polite but firm voice that was telling her and not asking her.
"Yes, professor, what about?" She tried to hide her nervousness at what this could be about and refrained from biting her lip.
"I'd much rather speak to you in the privacy of my office please." She turned, heading towards the stairs leading to her office. Hermione could do nothing but follow her as her mind raced about what her professor could want to talk to her about. First, she worried that maybe she'd found out about her and Severus. Worst-casee scenerio, she was going to be thrown out of Hogwarts and Severus was going to be fired but they'd been very discreet about their relationship. Then she worried it could possibly be bad news about Harry and Ron since she'd seen neither one of them today since Ron's meeting he'd gone to last night.
As they stepped through the office door she looked up to see Kingsley, Mr. & Mrs. Weasley, George, Percy, Bill, Fleur, Andromeda, Neville's Grandmother Lady Longbottom, and Aberforth Dumbledore sitting in the office watching as she and Professor McGonagall walked in and closed the door.
Minerva went and sat down in her big, black chair behind her desk. Hermione quickly found a seat next to George and Bill, they both eyeing her warily as she plopped down with a sigh.
"Miss Granger, since you are the only one from your little group I could find at the last minute, you will have to be the representative to share with all of our friends here what has been happening at Hogwarts." Her professor sat back as all eyes shifted to Hermione.
"How much do you want me to tell them? Has the Minister shared anything yet" she asked not sure what had already been said. Looking over to Kingsley he nodded his head no.
Minerva cleared her throat and took a sip from her nearby tea cup. Setting it down gently, she delicately wiped her mouth with a lace hankie. "Nothing much has been told yet except that there was a need to call back The Order of the Phoenix and this was an urgent matter. Seeing as I've found the most eloquent speaker of you lot, aside from Severus, you get to share with them why we are calling everyone back to arms, so to speak."
Minerva looked anxious but weary as she spoke. Her eyes bespoke so much of not wanting to get involved in another war after a lifetime of fighting evil despots.
Hermione looked around at all of the people in the room. Many had been her only family throughout the years. Seeing the anxious eyes of Mrs. Weasley made her heart hurt. The anguish of losing Fred still reflected on the grieving mother. How in the world was she going to tell them how they'd been attacked and basically hunted so far this school year and now their youngest son was going undercover as a spy in the new Death Eaters organization?
"Any day, Miss Granger. Everyone here has other jobs and responsibilities that they need to attend to." Minerva's words bit a little and she tried not to give her a "Snape" glare that Harry had accused her of adopting lately.
"Um, yes, I'm sorry," Hermione said softly, feeling just the opposite of how eloquent Minerva had said she was earlier. "There truly is no other way to put this... but there is a new Dark Lord who has established a group of his own Death eaters and they have been meeting here at Hogwarts."
Dead silence accompanied Hermione's announcement. The shock on everyone's faces said how they were feeling. It was very reminiscent of how they'd all felt when they'd first discovered about the evil that had come to their school once again.
George spoke up, his forehead creased in anger, "Who is it, Hermione? What bastard is threatening all of us again?"
Mrs. Weasley's shocked face at George's outburst looked like she would soon go into lecture mode at her's son language, until Mr. Weasley calmly put his hand on her arm, "Not now, Molly. Let Hermione answer. We all need to know."
"It's Antonin Dolohov, George. He's been recruiting here at Hogwarts to build up his ranks of Death Eaters."
"I thought he was dead," Aberforth shouted out, almost jumping out of his chair, "I saw Flitwick curse him and he fell dead."
Kingsley spoke up, "We never recovered his body. With all of the chaos surrounding the final battle...we just missed checking on him and many others." He looked apologetic as he tried to explain why their world was now again being terrorized by another Dark Lord.
"This my friends is why we need to once again ask you to come together as The Order of the Phoenix." Minerva looked out at the people sitting in her office. "What say you?"
"Well, damn," straight-laced Percy said. There were many nods of the head as no one really knew what else to say.
"Out of all of the people, they want you to kill it had to be him. How ironic. Are you going to tell him or do you want Hermione to have that honor?" Harry tried hard not to laugh at Ron's predicament, but in some weird way, this was really humorous. Not that killing someone was funny but…
"This isn't funny Harry. Would you want to have to walk up to Snape and tell him you'd been assigned to kill him? He'll kill me first and I think I'll let him. Anything to get out of this assignment."
Harry slid down the wall with his head in his hands. "This has turned into a huge mess." He looked up at his friend, "I'm so sorry Ron. There has to be something that we can do. I'm sure that Snape and Hermione will come up with a plan."
Once again, Ron looked like he was going to start crying as his bottom lip started quivering. "Do you think they can?"
Harry stood up and brushed his trousers off. His hand came out to rest on Ron's shoulder, "Mate, don't worry. Even if we have to have you go into hiding, we'll get you out of this."
Ron sniffed, his hand wiping across his nose," Thanks, Harry. Why don't you leave without me just in case someone followed us? I need some time here alone to think."
"Ok," Harry said, "I'm going to find Hermione and Snape. Don't worry about anything. I'll let them know."
Ron muffled a quiet thanks and took Harry's spot against the wall, his head knocking back hard ignoring the rock surface.
Hermione sat in the same chair she'd been in for a few hours and stared at the portrait of Dumbledore with only Professor McGonagall still in her office. The rest of the now, very somber group had left, muttering silenty to each other. It seemed most of them had been in shock that once again they would be at war and so soon after the last one had ended.
"It's some problem that has surfaced in our beloved Hogwarts Minerva." Portrait Dumbledore said giving his own opinion.
"Of course it is Albus. You heard the whole thing. No one wants the Order back in business. You could see it on everyone's face but what else can we do? If we don't stop it now in the early stages it will get out of hand...again." Minerva stared at the portrait with furrowed brows.
"No need to scowl at me, Minerva. I know I made many mistakes while running this school. I should have stopped Tom many times when I had the opportunity."
"Then why didn't you Albus?" Minerva asked her voice rising.
"That was my greatest mistake. I wanted to give him a chance. I thought when he was younger that I could change him but sadly it was not to be."
Dumbledore's humble answer wanted to make Hermione cry. If only he had been successful. So many people's lives would have been saved. All of their lives would have been so very different. She shook herself from those thoughts. It hadn't happened and there was no use wishing for something that never happened and would never be.
A knock at the office door echoed throughout the room and Severus entered after being invited in. The look of relief on his face was evident as he spotted Hermione still sitting in the same chair drinking a cup of tea.
"Miss Granger, I've been looking for you. Have you found Mr. Potter and Mr. Weasley?" He did his best not to stare at Hermione as Minerva was watching him observe her.
"Severus, I fear I've kept her busy the past several hours. You missed a meeting where we now have called back The Order of the Phoenix members."
Severus stomped over to her desk with a frown on his face. "Why wasn't I informed of this meeting?" Minerva flinched as he hovered over her desk. Any sane person had that same reaction when it came to the Potions Master.
"Because, Severus," she stood up to her full height which still wasn't as tall as he was, "I don't have time to run around the castle searching for you. Miss Granger was within easy reach, so I chose her to represent your little group of merry men...and women" She glanced over at Hermione as she added the last part. Being politically correct was something that Minerva had always tried to strive for in her life and she wasn't going to change now in her old age.
"Sev..uh...Professor Snape. Everyone who came today is ready and willing to help. Here is a list of those who came this afternoon." Hermione reached over to grab another nearby list, "This is a list of people that Mr. Weasley and Mrs. Longbottom will endeavor to reach out to for additional help."
"This looks adequate. Is Kingsley going to keep it among us for now? Did you stress why this cannot get out amongst too many people?" Severus threw the lists back onto Minerva's desk. Before anyone could answer, there was another knock on the office door. Harry walked in, forgetting to shut the door and stood with his fists clenched and a pinched face.
Hermione went to close the door while Severus directed Harry to a nearby chair. "What has happened Mr. Potter? Obviously, something is up by the look of utter anguish on your face."
Harry glared back at his Potions Professor meeting his eyes, "You could say something is up. I found Ron. I not only found Ron, but I found out what happened at the Death Eaters meeting."
All three of them sat, leaning forward, waiting for Harry to continue. Harry bent his head down looking at his hands. "Well, Mr. Potter, we don't have all day. What is the problem?" Severus's voice was showed how on edge everyone was at the moment.
Glancing up, Harry said, "Ron needs to kill someone in order to be initiated into the new Death Eaters."
Hermione and Minerva gasped. Severus was the only one not shocked by Harry's proclamation. "Nothing has changed apparently even with a new Dark Lord. Who was he assigned to knock off?"
Harry sat motionless not saying a word.
"Well?" Severus gave one of his famous scowls as he leaned towards Harry.
"You," Harry said pointing to him.
Severus's scowl disappeared as he dropped into a chair not knowing what to say, with Hermione starting to cry next to him.
"Oh, bugger," Minerva said. Not a one of them even reacted at hearing what the prim and proper Head Mistresses had just said.
This chapter seemed to come easier than the last several ones. I'm so relieved. I ended it here because it felt like a good time to have a break after that huge pronouncement from Harry. There will be more coming soon.
As far as my other story "Blinded" (Dramione) and the upcoming wedding. I promise I'm working on it. It's so hard to be original at this point when it comes to a wizarding wedding. So many have already been done, but I'm trying. So don't give up on me.
There will also be another chapter coming out soon, probably before the wedding mentioned above, for my story, "Playing with Granger" (Fredmione). I really like that story and so far has been one of the easiest stories to write.
Leave me any thoughts in a review about what's happening in Living. Also, I still want to remind people, this is a fan fiction for those who can't get over some of the things in this story. It's NOT canon. Most fan fiction isn't and shouldn't be close to canon. If people want canon they should be advised to read the original books again. That's all I'm going to say. Bye for now!
