They found Harry and Roark sitting on a white wrought iron garden bench in one of the three man-made water gardens, the single small waterfall that fed the stone pool, where many colorful fish swam around. To the left and right of the pool were flower beds, their blooming flowers a rainbow of color.
Harry had his arm around Roark's shoulders, his head bent close as he murmured to him. Moving quickly to the bench, Rodolphus sank down on the bench, wrapping his arm around his waist, drawing him easily into his side.
: How is he? : Rabastan asked Harry as he released his brother to Rodolphus, though his emerald eyes never left Roark.
: Not good at all. Grandfather tore his heart into small pieces. :
"How about you? Are you okay?" he asked as he watched his brother murmur to Roark, his hand moving slowly up and down his back.
Harry shrugged as he looked up at his lover. "About as well as can be expected. Fucking stubborn man, our grandfather."
A soft snort sounded as Roark lifted his head from Rodolphus' chest, accepting the square of cloth passed to him. "Like we're any better," he said, then he sighed deeply. "I'm so sorry."
"You have nothing to be sorry for, babe," he said softly, pressing a kiss to his temple. "If anyone should be sorry, it's your grandfather."
Another, even deeper sigh sigh sounded. "I should have stayed to face him, but..." he stopped with a shake of his head. "I just couldn't. The things that were running through his mind about us--"
"Sh," warm fingers covered his lips, stopping his flow of words. "You don't have to explain anything to us, nor do you have to explain yourself to anyone. I may not have heard what he was thinking that upset you so, but I felt enough throw the bond to get the gist of it. There were also the looks on not only Harry's face but Ethan's, Roan's, and Kili's. To say they were upset would be putting it mildly, and Harry let him have it before coming after you."
Roark's brow arched as he looked at his brother. "Did you?"
A smirk. "After everything he put me through about wanting to stay with Rabastan, no way in hell was I about to let him do the same to you. Our situations may be very different, but there is still no excuse for what he is doing to you."
A deep sigh. "I just don't understand why he is being like this about us."
"Hum..." came from Rabastan as he took a seat on the bench beside Harry. "I think it's because he refuses to see either of you as anything other than blooded relations, no matter how many times removed you are," he said quietly. "I can only think it's because of how he was raised to think that such things are taboo. Many have forgotten that in the times of the ancient families of Kobol, such things were the norm."
"Kobol is long gone, and we are the Colonies born of the survivors of the dying planet. Such things died out for a reason," Rodolphus said, "and perhaps, to some extent, I can see where he's coming from with his beliefs. There were children born with defects because of the close familial inbreeding. I told him the truth though, a few cousins, once removed have married in an effort to keep the bloodlines pure. Of the children born of those unions, there were no repercussions."
"I believe it is not words that are going to change his mind, or anyone else's mind should this ever get out about the two of you," Harry said.
"Then what will?"
"Actions," Rabastan said, reaching past Harry to lay a hand over Roark's, giving it a squeeze so that he looked at him. "You're going to have to show them, Rory, let them see that while there may be a few comments on how much we three may look alike, none of them will ever speculate that we are related. And also, if I'm not much mistaken, we will have some help from Raphael and Schyler."
Roark turned his hand over, wrapping it around Rabastan's and giving it a squeeze. "Thank you, Bas," he said, releasing his hand. "So you saw it too?"
A smile. "If you know where, and WHAT to look for, you can't very well miss it," he answered. "They keep it well-hidden when outside company is present, and at Headquarters, but privately...safely at home with the family, they see no reason to hide. They can be free, and they act a lot like us. Those too are so deeply in love with each other, I doubt very much they know where one begins and the other ends, the bond is so tight."
He gave a nod as another sigh escaped him. "I can't go home. I can't live there knowing how he feels about you, Dolph, and trust me, it is as much about you as it is about our being cousins and wanting to continue with our relationship."
"I know, and you won't have to. Your new Papa has said we can stay here. He even offered Harry and Rabastan a room if they wished to stay."
Harry's head turned, his lips brushing over Rabastan's jaw. "He did?"
Rabastan nodded with a smile. "He did, and I told him we would likely be taking him up on that offer as you would wish to remain close to your brother."
Roark shook his head. "I swear. This family takes in more lost waifs--"
Rodolphus chuckles, tapping a finger to his nose. "Except that you, my darling, are not a lost waif, are you? You are the long-lost son, the youngest brother, nephew, and cousin to the Durin hoard. Man, Rory, now that they have finally found you, they are going to spoil you rotten." He hugged him to his side. "Ready to head back?"
"Hum..." he breathed as he lay his head against his chest, letting his heartbeat calm his nerves. "I suppose, but...can't we just sit here for a bit longer? I've missed you so very much. Missed just sitting with you, resting quietly in your arms."
"We can stay as long as you wish. I've missed out on our quiet times as much as you have."
Roark's eyes slipped closed as he relaxed further against him, hearing Harry and Rabastan murmur softly to each other, the sounds of the waterfall over the rocks lulling him to sleep.
