Reality Sets In
Natalie roused first, her arm falling asleep under Severus’ weight. Carefully so as to not awaken her comrades, she slipped her arm free, then summoned her outer cloak, and eased herself quietly from the tent. Sitting on the blanket, she stirred the glowing red embers, the remnants of the once roaring fire. Sighing, a small smile on her face, she reached for more wood, stoking the flames until sparks flew high in the air. She sat crossed legged, staring into the flames, lost to the entire world around her, solely focused on her own thoughts. Her breathing became deep, regular and controlled. She closed her eyes, meditating, hands resting palms up on her knees. A look of infinite peace covered her face. The flames danced and highlighted her face, casting red tongues of light across her auburn hair.
A swooping dark shadow nearly attacked Natalie, startling her out of her reverie. “Shit!” She hissed, quietly, not wanting to wake the others, then falling backwards onto her back on the blanket. The bird soared back into the dark sky, cawing evilly, its wings beating a rhythm in the wind. The now recognizable eagle dropped into a death glide, honing in on the incredibly agitated witch who quickly regained her feet, hands on her hips, staring defiantly at the bird of prey. With a barely perceptible flick of her finger, she summoned her wand silently from inside the tent, and prepared her defense.
The eagle folded its wings, picking up speed. Natalie waited, biding her time until the last possible moment. Whipping her wand from behind her back, she whispered furiously, “Impedimenta!” then “Wingardium Leviosa!” immediately after the first incantation, effectively freezing and suspending a now very pissed off eagle in mid-dive. Natalie grinned evilly, snatching the eagle out of the air with both hands.
“Now let’s see what you have for me, you little pain in the ass!” She cackled quite gleefully. The eagle stared at her sullenly, its beady eyes glinting in the light from the fire. Natalie removed the parchment from the bird’s leg, then set it rather gently on the blanket. Almost absent-mindedly, she flicked her wand at the bird, chanting, “Finite incantatum.” The angry eagle hopped up immediately, snapping at her hand, taking a fair chunk of flesh with its beak, then with a mighty flap of wide wings, it ascended into the night sky again.
“Get back here you jackass!” She bellowed, totally infuriated, and waking up the others still inside the tent. The eagle soared higher into the sky, damn near cackling in glee.
“Natalie?” Tonks bravely poked her head through the tent flap. “Is that bird laughing at you?”
“Yes, but that’s no damn bird, it is one of my brothers.” She harrumphed, crushing the parchment scroll in her hand, clenching her fist so tightly that she raised red welts in the palm of her own hand from her nails, the blood from the missing chunk of flesh seeping into the parchment.
“Your brother?” Tonks worked her way out of the tent to watch the bird soaring away from them as fast as its wings would carry it.
“Yep, that was Nolan.” Natalie gazed around the clearing thoughtfully, twirling her wand idly in her fingers. “And …” she paused for a brief moment, “Accio alter Noah!”
A large black snake came hurtling towards Natalie from the under brush just to the side of the tent. The hissing snake barely missed smacking a quite confused Snape in the back of the head as he stumbled from the tent as well. Natalie deftly caught the snake in her bloodied hand, dropping it softly onto the blanket. It coiled up, raised its head as if to strike, then morphed into the form of an auburn haired, freckled young man with a cheeky grin lighting his entire face.
“You caught me, Nat!” He shouted, then grabbed his sister in a giant bear hug, lifting her off the ground.
“It wouldn't be so easy if the two of you would quit lurking around as a pair.” Natalie groused. “I suppose you’re delivering a message from Dad?” She gestured with the scarlet stained parchment.
“Yepper. And, boy, was he PISSED. You could have been a little more tactful in your reply, missy!”
“Tactful.” Natalie harrumphed. “Daddy dearest wants to marry me off to either an already MARRIED lecher an escaped convict, or, wonder of wonders, a DEAD man, and I’m supposed to be tactful. Get a life.” She slumped down on to the blanket, pouting.
“Well …” Nolan continued, “How were we supposed to know all that?”
“I’ve been sending you people the newspaper from here, don’t you read it?”
“Naw, that isn’t my job.” Noah chuckled, ruffling his sister’s hair. “Are you going to introduce me to your friends?”
“I suppose. But, you play nice!” She warned, pointing an accusatory finger at the still smiling man.
“Moi?” He asked with mock surprise. “I always play nice.”
“This is Tonks. Tonks, this is my brother, Noah.” Tonks reached out a hand to the young man.
“Wotcher, Noah.”
“I’m Remus Lupin.” The werewolf extended his hand warily, picking up subconsciously on Natalie’s unhappiness.
“Severus Snape.” Of course, Snape glowered at the man, but extended his hand politely nonetheless.
Noah greeted all of Natalie’s friends quite warmly, and with great interest. He gave Snape a definite silent once over, assessing the wizard’s stature. Suddenly, Noah shifted back into his snake form, slithering with great speed into the open, to be snatched from the air by his twin brother’s alter form, and was carried away on the wind.
“Damn.” Natalie swore. “I’ll get you two yet!” She shouted at the departing animagi.
“Well, that was interesting.” Tonks watched the two animals disappearing over the trees.
“Hmmph, interesting.” Natalie sank back down to the blanket, studying her bloody hand.
“Are you going to read that?” Severus asked, motioning towards the stained parchment.
“Nah, I can pretty much guess what it says.” Natalie answered him, picking distractedly at the royal blue sealing wax.
“Your dad wants to marry you off, eh?” Tonks tried to sympathize.
“Yep.”
“How old are you, Tonks?” Natalie suddenly asked.
“Why?” Tonks begged the question.
“Just wondering.” Natalie grew quiet again.
“How old are you?” Tonks asked, trying to get her to open up.
“I’ll turn 35 soon.” She answered. Natalie stood up, poking at the fire with a convenient stick.
“You know what?” She asked, not waiting for an answer. “I’d really rather not talk about it.” She grabbed Severus’ arm, and pulled him back into the canvas protection of the tent.
“Tonks?” Remus leaned close to whisper to the Auror, distractedly poking at the embers of the fire.
“Yeah?” She looked up to meet his gaze.
“How long do you think her brothers were waiting out here?”
“Bloody hell!” She cursed, scanning their surroundings suspiciously. “I hope not long.” She cast an anxious look at Lupin before motioning him back inside the tent as well.
Natalie was sitting cross-legged facing Snape, who tended to her injured hand, their heads nearly touching as she watched him work, and he focused solely on the task at hand.
A/N:
Didn’t really want to start the next chapter like that, but had to get it in. Sorry for the “unfinished-ness”, but again, this was an unplanned story from the beginning, so if you’re along for the ride … PLEASE hold on to the bar, keeps both arms and legs inside the ride at all times, and secure all loose articles. ;)
Thanks for riding with the Witch! Pitt
