Even after hours of sitting alone in his room thinking about
Draco, Harry still didn’t know what to do.
He’d just started to form a friendship with the blonde. He wasn’t sure he was ready for anything
more.
He knew this was something a boy would normally talk to his
dad about, but Harry didn’t quite know how to approach James. After all those years wanting a father, now
that he had one, he didn’t know what to do with him.
It was nearly three in the morning when Harry decided to
bite the bullet and write to his dad. He
quietly crawled out of bed and went to sit at his desk. He sat there for a long time with a quill in
his hand staring at a blank piece of parchment.
He had no idea what to write. He
wasn’t even sure what he was feeling.
Harry’s second day after the holidays was a lot better than
his first. The first good thing that
happened was that there was no Umbridge.
Rumor had it she was very ill, and most likely wouldn’t be up and about
for a few days.
The second good thing happened after lunch. Cho approached Harry and he was expecting her
to ask when the next DA meeting was, but instead she asked him to go to Hogsmeade
with her on the next visit. He accepted
the invitation with mixed feelings.
Before Draco’s declaration, Harry would have been on top of
the world. A date with Cho was what he’d
always wanted since he first met her. Now
he had it, but he wasn’t sure he wanted it anymore. He decided he needed to give it a chance
though.
Severus knelt over Umbridge’s pale form and looked deep into
her eyes with fixed concentration.
“Definitely Black Widow,” he said as he stood up.
“So I was poisoned?” Umbridge asked weakly.
Severus nodded.
“You’re incredibly lucky. Black
Widow poison is one of the deadliest poisons known to wizard kind.”
“Or someone was incredibly unlucky,” Umbridge mumbled.
Severus shook his head.
“No, the poison was brewed correctly, and that is no easy feat
considering it’s a master level potion.
Whoever poisoned you knew exactly what they were doing, and what dose to
give you down to the milliliter to make you ill rather than kill you.”
“Well,” Umbridge said, sounding relieved, “since you know
what poison it was you can just brew the antidote for me.”
“As much as I loathe to admit it, I can’t,” Severus sighed.
“And why not?”
Severus bowed his head.
“Because I don’t know how…”
Umbridge was silent for a moment and nodded. “Very well then. Leave me, I need to rest.”
Severus nodded and left the room. Dumbledore, who’d been standing in the
doorway the entire time, followed him.
“Liar,” the Headmaster mumbled and gave Severus a small smile.
Severus returned the smile.
“Well I am the head of Slytherin House.
What kind of Head of House would I be if I didn’t lie once in a while?”
Albus chuckled and headed back to his office. He knew who had poisoned Umbridge, just like
he’d known who sent the falcon. While he
enjoyed watching James play his games, the man really did need to be more
careful.
To everyone’s delight, Umbridge was too ill to perform her
duties for two weeks. The teachers took
turns covering her classes, though much to the dismay of the students they all
stuck to the lesson plans. The teachers
didn’t like it any more than their students did, but they knew Umbridge was
coming back. They were disappointed that
whoever had poisoned her hadn’t killed her.
Before they knew it, it was Valentine’s Day, and the first
Hogsmeade weekend since the holidays.
Severus decided to take the opportunity to drop by Grimmauld
Place to pick up some rare potion ingredients
James had for him.
To Severus’ surprise, James continued to do random nice
things for him, and no longer tormented him.
Their relationship was still a bit awkward, but they had made a lot of
progress in a short time.
When Severus arrived Sirius and James were in the drawing
room playing chess. “Well hello Sevvy,”
James smiled.
“Hello,” Severus nodded.
He still hated being called Sevvy, but he had decided to let it go for
the moment. “You said you had some
potion ingredients for me?”
James nodded and ran to his room to get the box of
ingredients. Severus stood in the
doorway while Sirius avoided looking at him.
While he was getting along with James, Severus still wasn’t friendly
with Sirius. Fortunately Sirius was at
least being civil and not saying anything at all.
James returned in a few minutes and handed over a small
box. “Thank you,” Severus said
quietly. “What do I owe you?”
“How about your first born child?” James laughed.
“Sure, why not?” Severus sighed, fairly certain he would
never have any children anyway.
Severus turned to leave and brushed past James. Their arms brushed and James inhaled sharply
and went completely stiff. He closed his
eyes and saw the image of a very pregnant Severus Snape brewing potions in his
lab.
When he opened his eyes both Severus and Sirius were staring
at him. “Are you all right?” Sirius
asked.
James took a few deep breaths and nodded. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
Severus gave James a strange look before leaving. James returned to his chair and surveyed the
chess board. “So what did you see?”
Sirius asked as he joined him.
“Nothing…” James lied.
Sirius raised an eyebrow.
“James, I know better.”
James shook his head and moved his knight to take out a
pawn. “Don’t worry about it. I think my third eye has gone a little
wonky.”
Sirius decided to let it drop; knowing James very rarely
talked about his premonitions. He hadn’t
even shared them with Lily. He did
notice that James seemed very distracted the rest of the day.
Draco headed to Hogsmeade with the usual crowd. He thought about saying he was sick and not
going, but decided against it. He was
rapidly growing tired of his fellow Slytherins.
Pansy grabbed his hand and he quickly snatched it away.
“What’s wrong Draco?” she asked.
“I don’t want to hold your hand,’ he growled.
“But it’s Valentine’s Day.”
Draco shrugged. “I
don’t see what that has to do with anything.”
“Draco,” Pansy sighed, “we’re betrothed to be married. We might as well start acting like a couple.”
“Things change,” Draco spat as he stormed off and ducked
into a shop. He was relieved when no one
followed because he wanted to be alone.
He wandered around the village aimlessly for a few
hours. He saw Cho Chang storm out of the
tea shop in tears, with Harry close behind her.
Draco had heard that Harry had a date with Cho, and he couldn’t help but
be delighted that things hadn’t gone well.
That whiny bitch didn’t deserve Harry.
Draco just wished Harry would see that.
Harry walked right past Draco and didn’t seem to notice
him. Draco decided Harry was just upset
and followed him to the Three Broomsticks.
He sat in a corner and watched as Harry went straight to Hagrid. The half giant looked worse than ever, and
Draco couldn’t understand how Harry could hold any affection for the man.
When Hagrid left Hermione came in with Lovegood and some
strange woman. Draco moved a little
closer to listen in. There were times
when being a Slytherin had its advantages.
It seemed Hermione had the bright idea to have Harry give an
interview that would be published in the Quibbler. Draco laughed quietly and shook his
head. What was Hermione thinking? Of all the things Harry needed, more exposure
wasn’t one of them.

A/N: I wasn’t going
to poison Umbridge until later, but I never could resist begging. The ordeal with the Divination teacher is in
‘The Real James Potter’ which isn’t beta’d, and in my opinion, not very
good.
