Chapter 34
Beta'd by the amazing Tenchi. You're the best, woman, and thank you!
Just a reminder of what's on my profile; reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will get deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
The group standing in the library at Avalon Manor was a tense one. All of them were in Death Eater robes and masks by now. At the moment, they were making sure that everything was as in place as they could get it. That's all they could do because within ten minutes it would be time to do the deed; Spinners End would be 'attacked' and set on fire.
Straightening his robes and making damned sure his mask was in place and would hide everything, Sirius shook his head. “Yeah, if this isn't the height of ironic, I don't know what is! Me, Remus and Harry all playing Death Eaters. Who would have thunk it?” He snickered, trying to add some levity to a very tense situation.“Not me, that's for sure,” Harry laughed, making sure the robes were laying right and his mask, though it wasn't on his face, was there. Shaking his head, he said, “I don't care if we crafted these masks and I won't ever have to wear it again, it's still creepy to have it and think I'll be wearing it.”“I have to agree with Harry there,” Remus told them with a nod, making sure his real wand was safely tucked away while fingering his throw-away one nervously, looking down at himself. “I have a feeling James, where ever he may be, is having a right laughing fit over this.”
“Probably! And he would never let us live it down either,” Sirius laughed, shaking his head. Glancing at Snape and Malfoy, he added, “Though he would agree with what we're doing. He would just find it a laugh riot.”Snorting at the conversation, Severus shook his head, though he appreciated the attempt to lighten the mood. This was stressful and any little bit to ease it was helpful. Quietly, he asked, looking at the three, “You have everything down we need to do with the timeline we set up?”“We're good there, Severus,” Remus assured him. “Sirius and I went through as much as we could of it and think we can pull it off. With you and Lucius directing, we should be fine. We'll let you tell us where to cast what and when.”“You have everything set up, right? And ready to go with all the shite you want to keep out or replaced?” Sirius asked, looking at the man.“I have,” Severus told him with a firm nod. “Everything else is set up to look as casual as I can get it. I even notified Albus that I wanted him to have Fawkes pick those books up the day after tomorrow so it won't seem odd that they are right where the bird dropped them.”“We have droppings from Nagini we plan to leave inside where the evidence of where Severus was is already in place,” Lucius said, stroking the snake's head where she had it resting on his shoulder. “Kaliya is going to stay with Severus and keep watch for anything off. That just leaves you three to have fun with the destruction, or what is left that Severus didn't already put in place.”“I have the wards set to fall with one spell, looking like they were taken apart. Harry has the spell and can do it quickly. We should be in and out in under five minutes,” Severus explained, looking around.“I say we do it then and get it over with. Then Remus and I are going to have to hightail it back to Grimmauld Place to make it look good,” Sirius told him with a firm nod.“We'll let you know tonight what happens,” Remus told him, looking between the three. “Have Harry keep the mirror on him as we don't know what will come when and how long we'll have to tend to this. It's going to cause chaos. For many.”“We will,” Lucius assured him. “Alright, let's get ready and tend to matters.” Smirking, he added, looking between Black and Lupin, “And don't have too much fun!”“It's going to be a riot,” Sirius admitted, chuckling. “Oh, this will be causing worse chaos than anything we did in school! You have to love doing something like that!”“Especially since it's for the best cause there is out there,” Remus added with a smile as he dropped his mask over his face.“Severus, we're in trouble,” Lucius moaned, though smirking as he lowered his mask and made certain Nagini was under his robes and wrapped around him.“Oh, yes,” Severus said with a snort of amusement. “I'm just sorry I won't get to see the effects first hand. Those should be the height of hilarity!”
Standing in what was the dining room of Spinners End, watching the books on the table slowly burn, Severus looked around, watching what the others were doing. Lucius was directing them to do what was needed to look good, including coaching what spells to use. Honestly? He had thought there would be some kind of emotional reaction to his old family home burning. Of course, he knew that it wouldn't be totally destroyed and he could rebuild it later, probably doing a great many improvements on it that he kept meaning to see to over the years. As he watched, though, there was nothing. In fact, there was what only could be termed relief over what was transpiring. Part of that, he was sure, was this was heralding the end of his being drawn into the nightmare that kept getting worse with each passing day. However, he was sure that part of it also came from the awful memories that were contained in this house. It was as if this was a purging of some kind, something that meant he could start anew without having to deal with the dregs of the past when it came to the house. That he liked. He never had that chance before and it was now being given to him. He planned to make the most of it.Looking around as they finished, he asked, “Is that everything?”“We're done,” Lucius told him softly, glancing around himself to ensure that they hadn't forgotten anything. “We just have to set the Dark Mark and Fiendfyre then we can get out.”“Let's do it,” Severus said firmly with a smirk, reaching up to stroke Kaliya's head. Heading towards the front door, he waited for everyone to exit then set off the Wizarding equivalent of a burglar alarm that would probably wake the whole neighborhood in minutes then stepped out, not bothering to look back at his home.Walking over and standing by the quartet, watching as Lucius made sure to put the last of Nagini's droppings where they were, he stood by Harry. Putting a hand on the young man's shoulder, he smirked then said, “Have at it.”
Grinning a little, Harry leveled his wand at the house then set the Fiendfyre before casting the spell for the Dark Mark and word. Lowering his wand, he nodded as both went perfect and said, “Done.”
“Let's get out of here then,” Lucius said with a pleased nod, looking around and already seeing neighbors lights come on at the sound of the alarm. Holding out the Portkey, he waited. Perfect. It all went according to plan, just what they wanted. Now they had to wait and hope.
Sirius and Remus hadn't been back at Grimmauld Place ten minutes and were just sitting down at the table, looking like they were going through books again, when an upset and startled Albus came in.
Looking up, trying to keep his normal expression in place, Sirius asked, “What's going on?”“I need you to stay here, Sirius. Remus, come with me. Something's happened. There's been an attack on Severus' house.”Standing, trying to look wide-eyed and astonished, Remus asked, “Is Severus alright?”“I don't know,” Albus told him honestly, shaking his head. “What information I've gotten so far indicates he's not there.” Quietly, he said, looking between the two, “It appears to be a Death Eater attack. The Dark Mark is over it and the word traitor. That worries me.”
“We better go,” Remus said, trying to sound slightly panicked.“Sirius, tell everyone that comes over to stay put. I'll be back as fast as I can. We'll see what information we can come up with then I'll fill everyone in when I know something.”“Will do,” Sirius told him with a firm nod, grinning internally. All he hoped was they had done a good enough job that it convinced everyone. After a glance back at Sirius, Remus gave a brief nod then followed Albus out, heart hammering in his chest as he did.
Sitting at the head of the table at Grimmauld Place, Albus had his hands folded on it and was looking down, shaking his head. He imparted, quietly, to the whole Order that was assembled, “It appears, from what we saw and the scant information Tonks and Kingsley have been able to provide so far, that this was a specific attack on Severus. The Dark Mark was hung over the house with the word traitor under it. That tells me that Tom probably knows that Severus was working for us and took measures to stop him. No body was found, however. Which means that either Severus got out and is hiding, something I hope. More realistically, though, it means Tom or one of his followers have him. If that's the case, we need to find a way to rescue him. However, I'm not counting on getting any information that may lead to him as he was the one that provided everything we got from that side.”
Taking a sip from his ever-present flask, Moody said, “There was other evidence there, from what I'm getting so far. Let's see what it leads to then we'll press on. I agree, though; we need to not only rescue him from something gruesome, probably a fate worse than death, but find him fast. Let's see what Tonks and Kingsley can bring us when they're done. From what little they've been able to pass along to me, they said there is plenty of evidence there that they're going to use for various things. We need to wait to see what that is so we know where to look.”“Yes, we need to see what they can get us,” Albus confirmed with a nod. “Hopefully, by the time the sun rises, we might have some kind of clues we can pursue. Let's see what those are.”“Any hint as to what might have set this off, Albus?” Minerva asked, concerned, hands folded in front of her, knuckles white.“No,” Albus admitted with a shake of his head. “As far as I knew, from what Severus said, everything was going well, just how it had been. There was no hint, anywhere, that Tom might know what Severus was doing. With his shields, he can easily protect himself in ways that most can't. I'm not sure what might have brought this on.”“Could it have been a rogue attack or something? Maybe by Peter?” Arthur asked, looking around. “He has to be in a tight spot right now, with everyone looking for him. Desperate men do desperate things, we all know that.”“Let's see where the evidence points us, but that's something to consider,” Albus said with a nod as he looked around.“He's not smart enough to pull something like this off,” Sirius said with a snort, shaking his head.
“No, but he might try if he thinks it's something that will get him out of the tight spot he's in.” Remus said softly, looking at the table, an expression of concern on his face. Sighing, he added, “Though I don't see, even with the element of surprise, that Peter could get the better of Severus. We all know how skilled Severus is when it comes to defending himself.”“Let me ask this,” Moody said, looking around then focusing on Albus. “That part Severus has mentioned about the snake going missing and who that side thinks did it. Could this tie in? It would make sense that it might. It seems like too big of a coincidence that all this is taking place then Severus gets attacked.”Stroking his beard, looking thoughtful, Albus gave a slow nod. “It may. It well may. Let's see what evidence comes to light. The word traitor under the Dark Mark worries me the most. I'm not sure if Tom would be that blatant in pointing it out. Others may though. Let's see what we can get then go from there. I'm going to go poke around a little in the house as soon as the DMLE is done and see what I can find. I'll be better able to judge what might be going on after I do that.” Looking at Moody, he said, “See what you can find at the DMLE. The rest of you, I have a few clues I want run down to see where they lead. I'll hand those out before I go. Mostly, it was some things Severus mentioned he was doing. Nothing too taxing and unrelated to his role as a spy.” Glancing at Sirius and Remus, he said, “I want you two to stay here. I think it's wise, for the foreseeable future, to keep at least one of you here at all times. That way if someone can get something related to all this they have someone to pass it along to.” Seeing them nod, he pressed on to what he wanted done with some others, hoping that something jarred loose so they had clues. If not, he wasn't sure what he was going to do.
Completely furious, Voldemort not only Crucio'd the Death Eater that had brought him the news of the attack on Severus, but was throwing them madly about at anyone within range. This was beyond infuriating. He knew many of his followers had doubts about the Potions Master and even he had a few. However, the fact that the man could bring him information that was not only completely accurate, but were things that no one else could get their hands on now that Lucius had vanished, was enough to keep him around. If it came out that Severus was a traitor, he would handle it himself. He did not want his followers to take it upon themselves to dish out punishment when there was no proof.
Pacing and snarling, he was enraged in a way he hadn't been in years. This was nightmarish. First Potter, then Nagini and now Severus. No! This was going to end as fast as he could manage it. His familiar needed to be back with him. They needed to find Potter and he would find whoever took it upon themselves to attack Severus. If there was a reason they did it, he wanted to know it before he exacted retribution. However, he had to figure out who they were first. Right now, that was the major issue here. He, of course, had a few people in the DMLE. They weren't as high-ranking as he wanted them to be, but they were there. Come morning, when the dust started to settle, he would summon them and see what they had. After that, he would work from there. Oh, someone, somewhere, was giving up information and he didn't care how he got it!
Looking down at his smooth, unmarked forearm, the one that had the Dark Mark on it up until a half an hour before when Kaliya removed it, Severus gave a slow nod. It was gone. That ugly reminder of a mistake he had made so long ago, something that had cost him dearly and still did was gone forever. Smirking, he was pleased with this. Leaning back, he sipped at the most excellent champagne Lucius had provided for all three of them. After all, this was a celebration so they were going to do it properly. Sighing, he said, “And all three of us are out until the war ends.”
“We are, thankfully,” Lucius smirked with a nod. “Now we just have to wait for the two sides to end it, nothing more.” Looking at Harry, he asked, “Did Black say anything we need to know? Or was it just an update?” The man had contacted Harry not long ago, but had only talked for a few minutes. He assumed it wasn't important, but wanted to be sure.“Nothing new,” Harry said with a shake of his head. “Just reporting in that there is complete chaos among the Order right now and people are scrambling to find out what's going on. He said not to count on him getting in touch until the morning. He hopes by then Tonks and Kingsley will have some information for them. If they do, he'll let us know.”“So, now we wait,” Severus said with a smirk, sipping at his drink. “And that feels wonderful after being drawn into this mess for so long.”“It does,” Lucius said wearing a smirk of his own. “Let's hope that this is enough to force the confrontation we all want and push for both sides to end this.”“Any idea on the odds of that happening?” Harry asked, looking between the two.“While I don't see that the Ministry is going to follow the bread crumbs we left, I'm going to bet that both the other sides will,” Lucius said, tone distracted as he looked down. “We set it up to where there are enough clues there that most will put it together. That and the evidence on who we wanted to lay this on. With all the contacts both sides have in the Ministry, it's going to come out. Then I'm going to lay odds that something's going to break before long.”“With what I know of the Dark Lord, it's probably going to send him even further off the deep end and unleash hell. Albus will fumble and have to press on, at least I hope, without you. It's my feeling that if both sides do that, chances are they are on a course for a head-on collision that will result in the war coming in a way the Ministry can't deny. At least I hope. Though I don't like the fact it will, there is little that's going to avert it by now. The Dark Lord has his plans in place. He has consolidated enough power to get it there. Albus knows this. That's going to set them up to face each other. The only thing I hold out hope for is that it may not end up as bad as the last one. There was much learned from that insanity. We can only hope it's applied here.”“Even if it isn't, it's not our issue,” Lucius said firmly. “We are out. That's all there is to it. Let them fight it. If they didn't learn their lessons and are content to be sheep, it's their problem. We know to protect ourselves and know our head shouldn't be in the sand. If the others don't want to do that, they have to suffer.”Thinking that over, Harry gave a slow nod. “Very true. People have been warned since my first year he's back. They didn't want to listen. There is plenty of proof and they still don't want to hear it. It's not our problem now.”“Exactly,” Severus said. “We are out and will stay out. We'll give advice to Black and Lupin, helping all we can there. Those two are good enough that they can take it and run, getting it out there. Beyond that, we wait. All there is to it.” Smirking again, he added, softly, “And it feels very good to say that after all these years.”“It does, I know,” Lucius agreed, smirking himself. “Tonight we can finally rest with ease and not worry. Tomorrow, we press on just how we planned with the Horcrux issue..” Holding up his glass, he then took a sip of the drink. This was perfect. For once, something went just how they wanted it to.
