“Again,” Aiden snapped.
“We’ve been at this all morning,” Deven sighed.
“And you haven’t managed a single hair,” Aiden sneered. “You’re weak.”
Deven grimaced. “I am not weak.”
“Then you’re stupid.”
“What?”
“My baby sister got this in an hour. Rhapsody managed it at ten years old. You’re too slow and weak to figure it out.”
Deven gave a warning growl low in his throat. “Don’t you dare.”
“Dare what?” Aiden smirked. “Infer that you aren’t good enough for her? You aren’t you know. You’ll never be good enough.”
Deven snapped, charging Aiden. Aiden sidestepped and waited. There it was, the shocked widening in his eyes.
“Let it happen,” Aiden ordered. “Let it take you over.”
Moments later, a shaggy brown wolf came trotting back, a grin on his features.
“And that’s the secret,” Aiden said, hunching down on the balls of his feet. “To become animal, you must give in to your animal instincts, the primal urges. The reason you haven’t before is because you weren’t in the right frame of mind. Remember the way it felt and you’ll always be able to shift. Now, go on, get your bearings down.”
Deven trotted off into the woods, sniffing and darting from tree to tree. Aiden nodded and went back to Zandra who was standing behind a tree. Her eyes were wide and she was shaking slightly.
“I won’t do the same for you,” Aiden whispered in her ear. She shivered. “You already have the primal urge to rip, the anger. Draco told me about it. Think about that moment, that point in time when your anger consumed you and your eyes glowed.”
Zandra nodded, closing her eyes and letting herself feel that moment. She wanted to become wolf more than anything. The grace of the wolf, teeth and claws and raw power. She opened her eyes, startled to see Aiden’s glowing indigo.
“That’s it,” he breathed. “Now, imagine I’m your torturer…or even Gregory. Let that anger unleash. Charge, feel it run through your veins and let go.”
Zandra took a deep breath, holding on to the anger, the hurt, the resentment. Gregory had seduced her with pretty words and the stupid American act, just a lost teen in a foreign country. He’d drugged her. She couldn’t resist. Then he’d laughed when they threw her in the cell. Laughed. He didn’t recognize her now but she wondered what he’d say if he knew it was her. Oh, she wanted to rip him limb from limb, slice him across the stomach and watch his guts fly out. She screamed and charged blindly, feeling fire flow through her body.
“Let it take you,” Aiden said softly. “Let it consume you.”
Zandra felt the shift, the change in her bones. Her line of sight lowered, her hearing and sense of smell were heightened. Colors muted. She looked up to see a grinning Aiden.
“You’re beautiful,” he said, awe in his voice. “I haven’t seen a white wolf before.”
“White?” Zandra asked but it came out as a yip.
Aiden laughed. “Yes ma’am. You’ve got eyes like blue glass and snow white fur. You’re gorgeous.”
“You can understand me?” She asked, wincing when it came out as a serious of yowls.
“I can,” Aiden said with a smile. “But only because…” He shifted on the spot, a jet black wolf sitting in his place. His black eyes glittered. “I am wolf too.”
Zandra barked in happiness. Aiden was wolf! The frolicked in the forest, running into a chuckling Deven. They play fought and enjoyed life as animals until lunchtime.
“Time to come in guys,” Melody’s voice carried. “And congratulations Deven, Zandra. You guys are amazing. I’m loving the white.” Deven yipped, making Melody laughed. “I’m partial to shaggy brown too. Now, to shift back think as a human walking on two legs ruled by logic and control.”
Three teenagers shifted and walked up to her. All had flushed cheeks and windblown hair. They smelled of woods and dirt and outside. She grinned, motioning them to go inside. Well, that was two down. They’d go running with Remus tonight.

Rhapsody grinned as she ate her lunch. She’d seen Aiden and Zandra running in the forest with another wolf in her visions. She wasn’t sure, but judging by the goofy smile on Deven’s face, it was him. She was so proud of all of the family. Even Serena and Jonah were getting on better, if the tiny glances they gave each other were anything to go by. Now they needed to work on everyone else.
“What’s going on in that head of yours,” James asked as he slid in beside her.
“We’re one step closer,” she said, giving a pointed look at Aiden and Zandra.
“And…”
“And we need to move on,” she said, looking toward the Malfoys.
“Ah,” James said. “Well, that’s going to be fun.”
Rhapsody snickered. “Fun is my middle name.”
“Making would be your first,” James said nonchalantly.
“Ohhh, not nice,” Rhapsody mock pouted. “So, can I count on you?”
“I’m actually more worried about Cadence.”
“Why?”
“She’s hiding out.”
“I know,” Rhapsody sighed. “But you know her. You’ve got to give her time.”
“No, I don’t think so. I think she needs a push this time.”
Rhapsody cocked her head. “So push her. You’re just about the only one who can.”
“Without losing my bits you mean.”
“Well, there is that.”
“What do you think she needs?”
“A better look, I guess.”
“Meaning?”
James gave her a look that said are you kidding me and grinned when she blushed.
“Fine,” Rhapsody sniffed. “Get to know the guy and then push.”
“Will it work though?”
“Yeah, I think so.”
“Done,” James said and moved down to the end of the table to chat with Matt.
“You should stop encouraging him,” Cadence growled as she took his place.
“Maybe you should give your guy a chance. Mine surprised the hell out of me.”
“He’s just so… big.”
Rhapsody giggled. “Well, some girls would consider that a good thing.”
“Oh please,” Cadence whined. “I do not need to hear another story about the size of-“
“Shut it!” Rhapsody snapped. “I wasn’t about to say that. Just allude that perhaps bigger might be better…sometimes.”
“You mean in my case?” Cadence pouted.
“What’s really bothering you Cay?”
Cadence sighed and smacked her head on the table. “You know what’s wrong. I just hate the lack of choice.”
“I did too, but you’ve seen Deven. He’s…great.”
Cadence smiled. “You always did have a thing for his kind.”
“Well,” Rhapsody shrugged. “Why not? But that guy of yours, he seems sweet and not at all inclined to be the normal big headed asshole.”
“Maybe.”
“Besides,” Rhapsody said, a crocodile grin on her face. “Just think of how-“
“Stop!” Cadence squeaked. “I don’t want to think about that.”
“Yes you do,” Rhapsody chuckled. “You just don’t want to admit it.”
“I’ve lost my appetite,” Cadence snapped and tried to get up.
“Keep your pants on,” Zach said as he came up behind her. He pushed her down into her chair and claimed the seat beside her. “I’ve been talking to him. He’s probably more scared of you than you are of him.”
“I highly doubt that.”
“Hey,” Zach said, bumping into her shoulder. “You’re one of the toughest chicks I know. Time to take a lesson from your sis, well, actually, my bro and just go for it.”
Cadence smiled. “You know what? Maybe I will.”
Rhapsody waited to say anything until Cadence got up and wandered down the table to sit beside James. “That was sweet.”
Zach blinked a moment and scooted closer. “What? I can be sweet.”
“You should show Vi that.”
Zach frowned. “She’s sooo…tiny.”
Rhap giggled. “You aren’t going to break her. You need her balance.”
“No one else knows I’m as crazy as you though,” Zach said softly.
“Well of course not. You’re much better at hiding it than me.”
Zach smirked. “Comes from my father’s side of the family.”
“Of course it does. Aiden’s the master at hiding his true self. Your sister still has a ways to go…”
Zach chuckled. “Nah, she’s like her mom and I like her like that. Makes it fun.”
“Fun to poke at her and watch her spit fire you mean.”
Zach shrugged. “If the shoe fits.”
“How’s Nate and Anastasia?”
“Slow…but he’s much further along than I am.”
“Oh, how so?”
“Ana’s so sad and you know Nate, as sarcastic as he is, has a twisted sense of humor. She likes that about him.”
Rhapsody smiled. “He’s willing to make fun of himself for her sake.”
“Yup.”
“It’s a good match,” Rhapsody said and sighed. “Given any more thoughts as to locating the Master?”
“Not a lot,” Zach admitted. “I figured that after we go for that run tonight, we could have a meeting. We’ll be at the Ranch, right?”
Rhapsody nodded. “Annabel was kind of disappointed that Teddy and Victoraire would be coming with Remus.”
Zach laughed. “She’s just upset that she might see too much of her brother.”
“Poor girl. Can’t be easy, getting an eyeful like that.”
“And more than once,” Zach said with a shudder. “I’d never bring it up in front of her, but word is, Victoraire’s more wolf than she lets on. They get a bit wild.”
“Didn’t need that image in my head, thanks.”
“It’s already in your head you silly cow.”
“Yes but I was doing a damn good job at blocking it out!” Rhapsody snapped a bit too loudly, earning strange looks from the rest of the dining hall. She leaned a bit closer to whisper. “Besides, if I concentrate on that, my other visions will dull.”
Zach gave a half shrug. “There is that. Well, best be off. Vi asked if I could help her with DADA. She’s pants at it.”
“Not surprising,” Rhap said lightly. “It goes against her nature.”
Zach nodded and got up only to be replaced with Scorpius. He grinned at Rhap and snatched a chip off her plate. “So, are we playing musical chairs, Dear Abby, or Psychic Sally today?”
“Bit of all three I’d wager,” Rhap sighed.
“Gets tiring, huh?”
“Sometimes.”
“You do love it.”
Rhap cracked a small smile. “Maybe.”
“Well, maybe you could help me?”
“Lizzy is going to remain afraid of you until you can prove that you are as gentle as you are tough and as protective as you are nonchalant.”
Scorpius frowned. “Sounds complicated.”
“Love is,” Rhaps said bumping into him. “Look Scorp, she’s not like your normal conquests. She’s damaged goods. She needs to be treated with care but not Jonah-like. You don’t want to smother her. Actually, you should probably take some lessons from Aiden.”
“Ugh, you aren’t going to wax poetic about your old boy toy are you?”
“Why does everyone say that?” Rhapsody growled. “Seriously, I just meant that he’s in a similar situation and he’s found the perfect way to handle it. If you had an egotistical and somewhat insecure maniac on your hands, I’d ask you to speak with Serena.”
Scorpius laughed at that. “Alright Dr. Phil Jr. I get it.”
“My dad would snap your neck if he heard that.”
“Then I’m glad he’s too far away,” Scorpius snarked. “But thanks. I’ll keep it in mind.”
“You know,” Rhap said after a few moments. “I’d wager it’s a bit like breaking colts. I mean, you have to earn their trust, prove that you won’t hurt them, and teach them in a way they understand, right?”
Scorpius nodded. “You can’t be too gentle though or they’ll get pushy.”
“Well, I don’t think Lizzy will get pushy, but if you’re too gentle, she might resent it. Still, a firm, fair, and gentle hand should get her attention.”
“I’ll just make sure I don’t offer to curry comb her hair or pick her hooves, shall I?”
Rhapsody giggled. “I’d say that would be a bad idea.”
Scorpius grinned. “Probably. Thanks Rhap. You’re the best. I’ll vacate for your next appointment.”
Rhapsody banged her head on the table as Scorpius got up to leave. What now?
“Hey beautiful,” Deven said, throwing his arm around her. “Got room for one more in your busy schedule?”
Rhapsody laughed and leaned into him. “It’s hard knowing everything.”
“Eh, maybe. But I think it’s kind of hot.”
Rhapsody grinned. Deven seemed to know exactly what to say. Yes, she did like him a lot. This whole soul mate thing wasn’t such a bad deal after all.

Night fall was fast approaching. Melody called a gathering of all the children who were or would become wolves. This included the rescued teens, all of Severus’s children, Zandra, Annabel, and Deven. When they were all together in her office, she called them to attention.
“Now then, tonight is about learning to be wolf…from one of your kind. Well, for those of you who are that kind anyway. The others will be coming along to help you learn. They know what it means to be pack. Coven and pack are frighteningly close in nature, especially with such animosity between the two. I know that Zandra has completed her turning this morning. Zandra, will you help the others to change?”
“Yes, of course,” Zandra said with a deep blush.
Jonah frowned. “When did you, how?”
Zandra reddened even further. “I, um, watched Deven and Aiden helped me.”
Jonah grunted but said nothing. He had apparently taken Serena’s words to heart. Serena shifted back and forth, uneasy.
“What is it Serena?” Melody asked, her eyes narrowed.
“I’m not wolf,” she said quietly. “Why am I here?”
Melody smiled. “Because you need to be.”
“But I’m NOT wolf.”
“You’ve never tried to be wolf either.”
Serena’s mouth hung open a moment or two. “Wait. You mean I could be wolf?”
“It’s possible,” Melody said gently. “It’s in your blood.”
“I don’t know how though. I’m so used to, um, the other.”
“Aiden, help your sister?”
Aiden nodded. “It’s easy Ser. You have to get angry.”
“I did and I didn’t turn into a wolf.”
“Well, let’s get home and I’ll work with you, okay?”
Serena nodded, flushing slightly at the prospect of being a slow learner.
Melody frowned. “There is nothing wrong with needing help. That goes for all of you. Should you find any difficulty switching tonight, do not hesitate to ask. “
“Will you be there?” Lazarus asked quietly.
“Afraid not. I am not wolf so I am staying behind. Those left will meet about finding the Master.”
“But we want to meet too,” Andra said fiercely.
“You’ll get your chance,” Melody said softly. “But you absolutely must learn about yourself first. Only when you are as whole as you can be will you be able to help.”
“As whole as we can be,” Nahuatl repeated hollowly.
Melody sighed sadly. “We have Zandra, Timmy, and Jonah’s other halves and we won’t rest until we find the rest of your halves as well. Don’t ever doubt that.”
“Time to go,” Severus said as he waltzed in the door. He produced an old brown piece of rope for everyone to grab on to. “On three.”
Melody waited until everyone blinked out before she ushered Rhapsody, Draco, and Melody inside. “Which group is more at risk?”
“Honestly, both,” Rhap said. “But if you split equally, you’ll be able to make it.”
“Equally meaning…”
“Well, if Harry and Ginny can join Severus and Celeste, they’ll be safe. Alex needs to come here with us.”
“Give me a second,” Melody muttered, taking out her contraband compact.
“And while she’s doing that,” Rhapsody said quietly, “we need to discuss when we’re going to join their souls back together.”
“How bad will it drain us?” Draco asked.
“Not as bad as Lily and Cecil by any means. Actually, if you have seconds for every ritual, you should be just fine. You’ll only be able to perform once a day though and you’ll have to…reconnect… after.”
“Sounds easy enough,” Hermione said slowly. “But what aren’t you telling us?”
Rhapsody bit her lip, fretting over the brief glimpse of a future she’d caught when someone bumped against her in the hallway. She wasn’t really sure exactly what it was, but she had to say something.
“Come on Rhap,” Draco said quietly. “I’m sure we’ve heard worse.”
“Not sure about that,” she said hoarsely.
“What then,” Melody said, a deep scowl on her face. “Harmony is as white as a sheet and Philippe doesn’t look much better, well, she said he didn’t anyway. Not like I could see him or anything.”
“There’s going to be a choice that has to be made,” Rhapsody said slowly. “And it’s so grey I couldn’t see it.”
“What choice?” Melody asked cautiously.
“Well.” Rhap gulped. “In order to retrieve the soul pieces, someone is going to be in jeopardy, possibly more than one person. In the end, we have to choose who is more worthy to live because someone is going to die.”
“Who?” Hermione squeaked.
Rhapsody’s eyes filled with tears. “I think there’s a reason some people don’t have soul mates.”
“Oh Gods,” the adults whispered.
Banging on the door startled them. Melody rushed to open it up, admitting a panicking Cadence. She ushered her to sit down, summoning a calming draught. No one said a word until Cadence’s breathing evened out.
“What is it sweetie?” Melody asked.
Cadence’s eyes were wide and unseeing.
“Outside the castle walls, I think I just saw the devil himself…and he looks like Draco.”
“Cygnus,” Draco said darkly. “Anything else?”
“He’s carrying the lost souls.”
Rhapsody choked. “Gods no.”
“Let me guess,” Hermione said hollowly. “Our decision must be made tonight.”
“Worse,” Rhapsody whispered. “We’ve lost it completely.”
“How many will we lose tonight Rhap?” Melody asked.
“Three here if we don’t move in two minutes. Three there if we don’t warn them to do the same. We'll lose two no matter what. I just can't see which two.”
"Fuck," the adults said and sprung to action.
