Living Chapter 34
(Last Time…)
Glancing up, Harry said, "Ron needs to kill someone in order to be initiated into the new Death Eaters."
Hermione and Minerva gasped. Severus was the only one not shocked by Harry's proclamation. "Nothing has changed apparently even with a new Dark Lord. Who was he assigned to knock off?"
Harry sat motionless not saying a word.
"Well?" Severus gave one of his famous scowls as he leaned towards Harry.
"You," Harry said pointing to him.
Severus's scowl disappeared as he dropped into a chair not knowing what to say, with Hermione starting to cry next to him.
"Oh, bugger," Minerva said. Not a one of them even reacted at hearing what the prim and proper Head Mistresses had just said.
"Well," said Severus nonchalantly,"That would explain Weasley's stomach problems."
Hermione stopped crying looked up and glared at Severus, "How can you joke about something as serious as this? He is supposed to kill you." She pointed at the man who sat calmly watching her explode with worry.
"I know that and I also know that if he doesn't kill me then he'll probably be killed himself," Severus answered her, stopping to take a sip of his tea as if they were discussing the weather.
"Actually, he was told if he doesn't accept this assignment then he'll be Obliviated. But, I have a feeling that just means another Death Eater want-to- be will be assigned to kill you." Harry shook his head. "In fact, Ron said there are hits out on all of us."
Hermione sat nearby with her arms folded in front of her, "Even me I take it since apparently they botched up the first attempt?" She stood up, all sadness gone with anger taking its place. "What are we going to do now Severus? We can't just stand around waiting for the next time someone tries to kill us?"
"Miss Granger," Minerva said quietly, " That's where the Order will come in. We will need to set up more patrolling in the hallways in order to protect the innocent." The Headmistress sat straight nervously tapping her nails on her desk as she watched Severus pacing her office floors.
"We can't have them openly patrolling the hallways of Hogwarts. That would be a huge indicator that we are aware of their presence here." Severus answer back sharply. He stood and started pacing back and forth looking down at his feet. The click of his boots on the wooden floor was the only sound for several minutes. He stopped suddenly and looked up, "Ron needs to complete his assignment. If he's showing that he's one of them, then he'll be able to keep tabs on what the other Death Eaters are doing."
"You want to die?" Harry cocked an eyebrow at Severus, "How does you dying help and keep the rest of us safe? Anyhow, Ron is a mess. I don't mean to diss one of my best mates, but he can't handle the pressure he's under pretending to be one of them."
"You are correct, today's behavior from Weasley would not be classified as Death Eater stealth," Severus said flatly.
"Harry, where is Ron? Why didn't he come with you to explain this himself?" Hermione's face showed her concern as she started to nibble her bottom lip again in nervousness.
Harry gave a half-laugh, "You see, there's the problem. He was scared that Snape here was going to kill him when he revealed what his Death Eater assignment was. I left him hidden back in an alcove where he was crying and hitting his head against a brick wall."
"Oh, Gods, that sounds awful. Why did you leave him? You know how he gets when he's this upset?" Hermione stood up and walked over to Harry.
"Miss Granger it's not as if he's a two-year-old. He needs to grow up sometime and today's that day. Mr. Potter, go fetch Mr. Weasley and bring him back here. We need to plan out how he's going to kill me." Severus grinned at his own words.
Harry left muttering loud enough for all to hear, "This is so weird."
"I agree with him," Hermione said nodding her head towards the door where Harry had just left.
"That goes double for me," Minerva said. "In fact, I think I need something stronger than tea to get me through this evening."
"I'll be joining you if I need to plan out my own demise." Severus sighed and finally sat down crossing his legs. Meanwhile, Minerva called a house elf to supply them with food and other things to get them through the next several hours of planning and scheming.
Ron stumbled out of the alcove after finally getting tired of crying and berating himself for always messing things up.
"Weasley, where've you been?" Theo Nott asked as he shoved him back into the alcove he'd just come from. "What is wrong with you? You better not have been spilling your guts about what happened at the meeting? You know the consequences." Theo stood with his wand in hand ready to throw a curse if needs be.
"No, I didn't say a word to Harry. He wanted to know what I was doing and I was trying to tell him to leave me alone." Ron's words didn't sound as convincing as he'd hoped them to be.
"It didn't look to me as if you were fighting," Theo said as he pushed his hair back out of his face, his hand clenching his wand in a tight grip.
"Well, bloody Harry Potter, Savior of the World, always thinks he's right about everything. He never lets me get a word out. He still thinks he can boss me around like he has for years. I dragged him here to set him straight." Ron said standing up a little taller. He actually was taller than Theo, so he hoped that his extra height would intimidate the other boy a little.
"You better not be lying to me. There are consequences for betraying our organization. Need I remind you of them?" Theo looked up at Ron squinting his eyes, his chin lifting.
"I remember what you said. Now just leave me alone so I can get something done." Ron brushed past Theo, marching out and walking fast towards Gryffindor Tower. He didn't want to give the Death Eater another chance to question him because he wasn't sure how many more lies he could come up with right now. He was tired and scared and only wanted to go to bed early and try not to think about any of this the rest of the night.
Halfway to the tower, he was cut off by none other than Harry.
"You need to come with me, Ron." Harry jerked his thumb towards another staircase other than the one leading towards his bed.
Ron looked around in exasperation, "Why, Harry? I'm tired and want to go to bed. Theo just confronted me and wanted to know why we were talking. He thought I'd spilled the beans about everything I learned at the meeting." Ron explained flapping his hands as they talked.
"That's exactly what you have done Ron. So what? That's what you're supposed to do. This is your job. Speaking of that, you need to come with me back to McGonagall's office. We're going to plan how you're going to kill Snape." Harry waggled his eyebrows at him.
"What?" Ron asked with a whine. He looked over Harry's shoulder wondering if he could escape him and get to the Gryffindor common room without being caught.
"Come on and you'll find out when we get there." Harry steered him in the other direction towards the Headmistress's office.
Ron felt like he was in a dream. What in the world was Harry talking about? Were they going to plan Snape's murder? Who were "They"? His stomach started hurting again and his heart felt like it was doing leaps and bounds in his chest. There was no way that he was going to murder anyone. He'd already had that awful experience while fighting during the final Battle at Hogwarts.
He wanted to take his time getting to McGonagall's office. It felt like he was trapped in a nightmare and there was no escape and he'd never wake up. He swallowed hard when the large door to the office was in front of them. Ron took a deep breath as Harry knocked on the door and they walked in.
Theo Nott was fuming as he strutted down the hall, glaring at anyone who dared step in his way. Justin happened to be waiting in their room reading a novel as he lounged on the settee.
"Why are you here relaxing?" Theo shouted at Justin making the Hufflepuff jump at the intrusion.
"Why are you acting that way? Is there a new law saying I can't relax one evening and read a book?" Justin made a face at Theo and turned back to reading his book.
Theo stomped over and grabbed the book out of Justin's hands. "What is this book anyhow? What is The Hobbit? Is this a Muggle book?" The words came out with more venom than he'd really wanted them to since Justin was still kind of sensitive about his mudblood status. Granted, he'd proven himself to the new Dark Lord who wasn't as fanatical about blood status as Voldemort had been, but it still bothered Justin when he brought up the fact that he was a Muggleborn. He knew that Justin wished with every fiber of his being that he wasn't and he'd done extra things to show how dedicated he was to the mission of the Death Eaters.
Justin snatched the book back and held it to his chest, "What's made you froth at the mouth? Whatever it is, don't take it out on me." He dropped back down, opened the book back up and started reading again.
Theo watched him for a moment realizing what Justin had said was true. It wasn't Justin's fault that he was angry and he shouldn't be taking it out on him. "I thought that Ron Weasley had told everything to Harry Potter."
Justin peeked over the top of his book with wide eyes, "Really? Are you certain?"
"No, I'm not sure. I confronted Weasley about it and he said he didn't say a word but I'm still not sure. If anything gets back to Lord Dolohov about this I'll be punished. I vouched for Ron." Theo sat down next to Justin leaning against him. "I'm sorry for taking it out on you. I don't want to be punished again. I've had enough of that to last a lifetime."
Justin put his book down to the side and wrapped his arms around Theo. He held him for a few moments saying nothing, just leaning against him making him feel safe and loved.
"I'll help you watch Weasley. All we can do right now is trust him. If it looks like he's been lying to you we'll Obliviate him…" he hesitated.
"...Or worse, eliminate him." Theo ended his statement for him. It was almost curfew and he didn't want to waste any more time arguing. "Thank you." He smiled at his lover and leaned over to show him how much he truly appreciated having him in his life.
The big wooden door shut and to Ron, it sounded like a huge thud. The eyes of Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, and Hermione Granger all were staring straight at him. He stood at the door looking back at them.
"You may enter Mr. Weasley. I promise you we're not going to bite." Minerva's words said in humor sounded more menacing than they were meant to be.
"What's this all about?" Ron asked looking around at each person sitting there who in turn was watching him back. He cracked his knuckles as he stood to wait for someone to speak.
Severus stood, looked over to Harry and then spoke to Ron, "Didn't Mr. Potter tell you why you are here?"
Ron sputtered trying to answer him, "Ah, yes, but...he said you want me to go ahead and kill you. That's just wrong. I'm not going to do it." His face felt hot as his heartbeat quickened. He was ready to run and never come back.
"Calm down, Mr. Weasley," Minerva said to the upset young man, "We aren't planning on you truly killing your Potions Professor. We are going to plan what appears you killing the man off. There is a huge difference."
Hermione walked over to Ron, took his hand and led him to a nearby chair and pushed him into the seat. "This will save you, Severus...well all of us. Calm down and listen to what Severus has to say."
Ron glanced to his right to where Snape lounged as if he didn't have a care in the world. Obviously, he wasn't concerned about what needed to be done. The Headmistress quietly sipping on her drink, something that definitely didn't look like tea, hummed a tune under her breath showing lack of concern about his predicament. Harry also eating a sandwich, which looked really good right now, seemed overly calm.
"Since no one here but me seems to be worried about this I guess I need to hear the plan." Ron's eyes turned to Snape.
"I thought you'd never ask," Severus smirked putting his glass of wine down on Minerva's desk. "You actually have the easy part."
You'll hear more about the plan in the next chapter. Now that they have Ron there and hopefully on board, maybe they can get the upper hand in the fight against the Death Eaters. This chapter was almost all written before I went on a family vacation and now I'm back home finishing it. I hope to keep up the momentum with this story.
