Chapter 34:
Just Call Him Lucifer
All right, it was official; Sirius wanted the damned ferrets back! While they were bad, the truth of the matter was the cat was infinitely worse. No one, it didn't matter who, was safe from the damned cat's wrath. The beast had taken after all of them in the two days it had been in the house, repeatedly. And stunning spells didn't work! Well, the standard ones anyway. They had tried those. The cat just shook them off, gave a deadly hiss then redoubled its efforts in whatever it was doing.
Molly and the brood had come over to see Harry, deliver some food and do the standard since they hadn't seen Harry since he was whisked away from the school. That was fine and no one minded, honestly. The damned demon cat did, though! While Ginny and Hermione were cooing over him, it had taken exception to the visitors then chased all of them around the back yard. He honestly hadn't thought Molly could move that fast. They had tried getting the beast in multiple ways, including summoning it. Yeah, well, that didn't work. The spells had no effect on the creature. Like with the ferrets, Lucius tried reasoning with the devil cat. All that resulted in was him getting the furry claw laden tornado treatment before the cat went right back to the chase. Finally, Bill, who was just looking wide-eyed at the creature and what was going on, dropped the beast with a stunner used for dragons. After that, they locked the cat in a room Kreacher quickly padded. As would be expected, the brood hurriedly exited the house, but not before he had Bill get readings on the cat to send to Charlie. He hoped, as they were damned sure that they weren't going to get the beast away from Lucius, that they could figure out what the fuck mix that damned cat was so they knew how to deal with it.It was at that point they learned another fact that didn't please any of them; whatever magic that cat had allowed it to get out of just about anything. They had come into the house to relax and try to figure out what to do to put a leash on the cat so they didn't go through that again, when they were greeted by the cat sitting at the foot of the stairs. To say the cat was more pissed than usual was an understatement of epic proportions. All of them, save Harry, who had the common sense to run and hide in their bedroom, had ended up on the wrong end of the cat's claws after it had chased them through the house. The only thing that made it all worthwhile was that, in the middle of the beast having at them, Albus had come in. This did not please the Prince of Darkness, as Harry had dubbed the cat. And the cat had at him but good. In fact, Albus, no matter what he tried, couldn't get the beast off after it went furry clawed tornado on him. It wasn't until the cat decided he was more pissed off at Lucius than Albus and took after him, that Albus was left alone. At this point, they learned that even Albus, despite all his knowledge on plenty, even with him being completely mental at this juncture of his life, had no clue what to do about the cat. Even he was leaning towards Snape's theory of demon blood. Though Albus wasn't one to back away from a fight of any kind, he had fled the damned house after vowing to find them something to help. Fucking wonderful. The next thing they attempted was the common sense route; they tried getting rid of the cat. While Lucius was in the shower early the next morning, the rest of them had managed to drop the cat with another stunner, one Charlie sent them that they used on the most hard to deal with dragons, then Snape and Remus had taken the cat to a Magical pound. That was rotten and he knew it, as he knew what happened to the animals in them, but they saw no other way around the situation. After all, such places knew how to handle animals with this kind of temperament. And, looking back, he realized that he should have known it wouldn't work. After a leisurely breakfast, without Lucius knowing the cat was gone, they had all gone to tend to various bits or just relax as most knew they were now in no danger of the cat having at them. Well, that was until they stepped into the hall just before the stairs. The Prince of Darkness was waiting for them, perched on the bottom stair, pissed as hell. If they thought he had been bad before, this was even worse as the cat seemed to know what they had tried.Oh yes, they were all good and fucking stuck with a cat that hated their guts, wasn't calming down and they couldn't get rid of! And they had no idea what to do to help. Lucius was trying what he did with the ferrets, spoiling him, but that wasn't helping, other than he wasn't taken after as often as the rest of them. The rest of them were well and truly fucked. They were. Snape had gone so far as to do something that he found distasteful; the AK. Nadda there. The cat did drop and looked like it died. Then it came back. And it was more pissed than before. Snape actually had to run for his life and Apparate away. Now, well—they didn't know what to do. Charlie was looking to see what he could find, as was Albus. Remus and Snape had even gone to this version of Voldemort with every reading they could manage to get. It was just a waiting game to see what someone could come up with for them to deal with the beast. They had gotten it calmed, slightly, by getting it to take some heavy duty feline Calming Draughts Albus had sent over. They had managed that by mixing it with the raw fish they gave it, the only thing Lucius found the cat would eat. It wasn't calm, that was for damned sure, but slightly less homicidal. As Albus was consulting with a Magical vet, making sure to turn over the readings they had given him, they were hoping for something else to give the creature so they weren't in danger of being gutted while they slept!
Harry was many things, and not all of them good, something he would admit to. One thing he wasn't was a coward. Anyone would tell you that. He had faced plenty over his time. Though he wasn't always to blame for some of what he was drawn into, his impulsiveness led to part of it. Even when the latter was the case, he faced up to it, pressed on and did what he had to do. So, he wasn't feeling bad about hiding away in their room while everyone else dealt with the issue of the cat. As all of them were better at defending themselves and knew more spells than he did, he thought this was the best route to go. Besides, he was plenty stressed over all that was going on. His thought was he just needed a nap and some time alone.
After walking into the room and shutting the door, he picked Vlad up off his shoulder. The Puffskein was humming one of those tunes again. By now, he was sure that he could actually identify some of what Vlad hummed and found it hilarious. He was sure that a few were really old horror movie themes. One he was certain was by Bach and others were from popular Muggle music. That he found funny. He was about to put Vlad on the bed and do the loo thing when he stopped cold, eyes widening. There, in the doorway to the loo, was the Prince of Darkness. Oh no, this wasn't good.Sending Kreacher off to get Sirius, making sure the elf explained what the issue was, Harry stood there as the cat began that deadly hissing thing. As he held Vlad close, he wasn't sure what to do. So far the cat hadn't moved, but he was sure that was coming with all they had seen from it so far! Now, plenty of the creatures Hagrid had were scary. Aragog was at the top of the list when it came to them, but he was certain that Beelzebub here was more frightening than anything he had encountered up to this point. And he didn't know what to do to defend himself either. Nothing anyone was finding was working, aside from stunning spells used on dragons. Those he hadn't learned yet, so he wasn't sure what he could use if the cat went on full out attack before someone came to his rescue.Once he decided that it was probably better to let the cat alone and vacate the premises, he began slowly backing towards the door, still clutching Vlad, eyes locked on the cat. In this case, getting the hell out was probably the best option there was. As he did, though, the cat stood and started advancing on him, hissing in a deadly way. Not good, very not good.Still moving backwards towards the door, he huffed, “Look, I'm getting out. No need to start anything. I'll leave you alone and you'll leave me alone, got it, Lucifer?” He was already agreeing with the demon blood theory when it came to the cat, though he had an inkling that whatever demon was involved was a high ranking one with serious power. As the name Lucifer came out of his mouth, he blinked in an astonished way. The cat—its whole personality seemed to change.Eyes wide, he watched the cat come his way then rub on his legs, purring loudly. Instead of the deadly hiss they'd all heard up to this point, it was meowing like a normal cat. Clutching Vlad, who he was positive was humming 'Sympathy for the Devil', he stared at the cat, not sure what to do. After thinking it over, he asked, “Your name is Lucifer? Not Beelzebub?” That was the only thing he could come up with that he said or did differently than all of them had tried up to this point.A loud meow and more purring greeted those questions. Still rubbing away on his legs, the cat looked up at him. That evil deranged glint in its eyes wasn't there either. It looked like a normal cat. Still not sure what to do and highly cautious, as he didn't want to set the beast off, he crouched down, holding Vlad close. With a trembling hand, he petted the cat then grinned when the purring got louder and the creature rubbed his head in his hand. “Right, Lucifer it is then.”Actually sitting down on the floor, legs crossed, Harry laughed when the cat crawled in his lap and nuzzled Vlad, who kept right on humming the song. After putting Vlad on one leg, Harry continued to pet the animal. “I don't suppose I'd like being called by something that isn't my name either,” he told the cat softly, petting him. Then he laughed when Vlad scooted onto the cat's head and hummed louder. The cat seemed to like it as well as he purred louder, tail swishing in a lazy way. After that, the animal laid down, curling up, letting Harry pet him, the Puffskein on his head still humming away.Hearing the door slam open, Harry looked up then grinned at Sirius, who had his wand out and was panting heavily. “It's nothing to worry about.”Mouth dropping open, Sirius took in the scene he was confronted with. Snape, Remus and Lucius were all following him, knowing this would probably end up in a battle like it had before. This, though—what the hell? After taking a couple cautious steps forward, not lowering his wand, he saw the beast look at him, but the cat didn't move, seemingly content to let Harry pet him. “What in the hell did you do? Whatever it was, you need to tell the rest of us!” Sirius told him, tone astonished. Looking over his shoulder as he heard the others thundering up the stairs, he held up his hand for them to stop. If Harry had gotten the cat calmed down, he wanted to hear how so the rest of them could employ it.Though Lucifer looked at the others, eyes narrowing, starting to hiss softly, Harry continued to pet him. “Calm down,” he told the cat gently. Vlad started humming louder, something that seemed to please the cat, as he continued to pet him. With a grin, he looked at Sirius and told him, “He doesn't like being called by a name that isn't his. That's all it was.”“Right,” Sirius said, tone wary. Rubbing a hand over his face, still not believing what he was seeing after all they had gone through with the creature, he then asked, “What name does he want called then?” He would call that damned beast whatever it wanted if it stopped the attacks.Still petting the cat, who was purring though shooting deadly glares at Sirius and those peering over his shoulder, Harry told him, “Lucifer.” He then laughed when the cat let out a loud normal meow and the purring grew louder, its head coming down to rest on his thigh.“And a name that well and truly fits the beast,” Severus snorted, shaking his head. Like the rest, he was stunned to see this. If it worked to stop what was going on, he was all for calling it whatever the hell it wanted called.Sirius crouched down, though making damned sure to keep out of range of the cat swatting him, he said, keeping a soft tone, “Hello, Lucifer.” Then he grinned when the response was a loud meow and purring. No attacking, no looking like an attack, the evil mental look in the cat's eyes not there, just a normal cat purring away. “Can I give you a pet?” He asked, staying cautious.“He's good,” Harry told the cat, continuing to stroke its back.Though the cat seemed to ponder that, it then let out a friendly meow and looked at Sirius.Hand trembling, making sure he was prepared to yank it back if the cat made any kind of strange move, Sirius gave the creature's ear a good rub, the kind that cats seemed to adore. Rather than ended up bleeding, what he got in response was a loud purr with the beast looking at him. “Right, it's Lucifer then. We'll call you that.”While the cat looked plenty smug over the name, it didn't make any kind of move to go on an attack.Once he pushed by Severus and Lupin, Lucius stepped into the room and just stared, completely astonished. It was as though this wasn't even the same cat. As he crouched down by Black, he held out his arms then asked, “Can you come to me, Lucifer? You know I won't harm you.”Seeing the cat look at Lucius, pondering that, Harry petted it then assured him, “He's fine. I think he just wants to hold and spoil you.”Though the cat seemed to contemplate that, it finally stood then sauntered over to Lucius before jumping into his arms, Vlad still on his head humming away. After catching the cat, Lucius stood up, looking smug as he held Lucifer close, petting him. “That's a good boy,” he praised, looking down at the huge mass of fur. “Lucifer—yes, something I can easily call you. Rather a fitting name if you ask me.” Hearing a smug meow as a reply in return, Lucius snorted. “We can handle calling you that. Now, what do you say we go downstairs and I'll get you a nice bowl of cream? What do you think? Maybe some tidbits for a snack.” Once more hearing a loud meow, Lucius walked off with the cat, petting him, with Vlad still humming away.As he watched Lucius almost strut off with the purring cat, Severus scrubbed a hand over his face, trying desperately to process the image of the cat being sedate with the insane demonic creature that they had dealt with over the last couple of days. It wasn't processing, that's all there was to it. “Demon blood—it has to contain demon blood!”“Oh, I do tend to agree with you there, Severus,” Remus told him, watching Lucius' trek down the stairs. “That beast is not normal! You AK'd it and it came back!”With a loud groan, Sirius stood and helped Harry to his feet. After stretching, he sighed then told them, “I agree, of course, but if the cat will stop the attacking and other bits by being called Lucifer, we'll go that route.”“True,” Severus conceded with a sigh, once more looking down the stairs, “but I still want to know what we're dealing with.”“Until we do, we treat him like a cat,” Remus added. “This is not normal. That's all there is to it.”“We can do that,” Sirius told him. Hand on Harry's back, he guided his godson towards the door. As he did, he grinned, “And that was genius, Harry! You figured it out when we couldn't. At least a bit of it.”“It was by chance,” Harry shrugged, grinning sheepishly. “I just called him that and it worked. Nothing more than that.”“Either way, it worked!” Sirius laughed. “That's good, for all of us. Though the cat going batshite all over Albus was well worth some of it.”“That was funny,” Harry chuckled, going out the door. “He's normally so collected and knows just what to do. This time he didn't and was as blindsided as the rest of us!”“That was rather memorable,” Remus admitted with a smile, trailing along behind. Now, though, they would have to stay alert for anything else that cat might pull. He was plenty sure the drama wasn't over with the creature.
After finishing in the loo for the night, Sirius came out and snorted at what he saw. Harry was sprawled out on the bed with Vlad perched on his head, playing with Lucifer and some of the toys Lucius had initially bought for the cat. The beast was still acting like a normal cat. All evening, the only time that they got to see the other side to the animal was when someone called him by the wrong name. Lucius did that once and got a swat that left him with bloody scratch marks down the side of his face for doing so. That was more than enough of a lesson for the rest of them and they made damned sure that they used the name Lucifer.
As Harry wiggled the fluffy thing on a stick and the cat tackled it, meowing in a playful way, Sirius came over and lay down with him. He gave the cat a good scratch behind the ears, something that was rewarded with some loud purring and the cat's head being pressed into his hand. Unable to help himself, Sirius chuckled, “I still think you're a psychocat, Lucifer, or have a split personality, something, but as long as you keep acting like this, we're good.”“He's pretty affectionate,” Harry said as the cat pulled away from Sirius then came over and rubbed against him, pawing at his hand so he would pet him. With a grin, Harry did just that, being rewarded with loud purring. Then he added, “And he likes Vlad, a lot. He's spent most of the night grooming him and purring away while Vlad does that humming bit.” With a laugh, he then added, “He seemed to like him riding around on his head. I think, maybe, it's like he has his own theme music wherever he goes that way.”“That's hilarious,” Sirius laughed, stretching out by the two. Moving in closer to them, he slipped an arm around Harry and tugged him closer. Once he was within reach, he kissed him softly. After breaking it off, he ruffled Harry's hair again then flopped down, hands behind his head. “We can deal with him, no problem, as long as he doesn't go psycho again.” What he didn't add was that they were damned sure keeping him on those draughts Albus sent over just to help. No chance he was coming off those! While he and Harry were talking once his godson came up and lay down by him, Sirius looked up when the door opened. As a dejected looking Lucius came in, he asked, trying not to snort in laughter, “No luck on the Lethifold hunt?” Once it all calmed down around here, that's what the two once more set about doing. By now, all of them had given up trying to convince them what really went on and were letting them have at it.“No, not so far,” Lucius said, slipping off his robe and hanging it up. Giving Lucifer's head a good petting, smiling as the cat purred loudly, he assured him, “Never fear, we'll find the beast. I don't care what it takes.” With a loud groan, he slid into bed beside Black, pleased when Lucifer came over and curled up by him, purring away. “We've decided to resume the hunt tomorrow. Not sure where the creature is hiding, but it has to be around here somewhere. All that means is we need to find a better way to detect it.” Giving Lucifer a good petting, he said, cooing to the cat, “Maybe Lucifer can sniff him out. Yes, he might be able to help.”Trying not to snort at that, seeing a grin on Harry's face, Sirius told him, “Do what you think is best.” Sliding down, he turned on his side, facing Harry, then yawned hugely. It was time for sleep. The last few days had been supremely stressful, so he wanted a night where he could get more than the normal amount of slumber. Well, that and not have to worry about waking to a demon cat intent on annihilating all of them. That thought alone hadn't aided in any of them getting a restful night. After curling up to Sirius, Harry looked up and grinned as not only Vlad, but Lucifer found a place on the pillow above them. While Vlad hummed a tune that sounded like a lullaby, Lucifer purred so loudly that it felt like he was vibrating the pillows. Shutting his eyes, he gave a soft sigh. Between the two noises, he drifted off to sleep quickly.Lucius curled up to Sirius' backside, as he had been since starting to sleep with the two. One arm draped over Sirius and touching Harry, he shut his eyes. Like with Harry, the sounds of the purring and humming had him soon drifting off.Sirius remained awake a little longer than the other two, but not by much. As he heard their deep breathing, he commented, voice uneven as he was pulled towards sleep, “Right, you two, that's good and you can keep it up for as long as you like.”
