Falling into Destiny
Chapter Thirty-Four
"You're terrible at this," Draco said in a factual tone.
You stared at him blandly. Between you and he was a beautifully crafted marble chess set. The black and white figurines had been made with such care that they almost looked real. It impressed even you with the level of craftsmanship and that wasn't even touching on the finely woven enchantments that made the stone practically glitter. The problem was that even though you had agreed to play with him, you didn't think Draco would be such a sore winner. Not that he was ever humble but somehow his attitude seemed amplified during the chess match.
"If I wasn't playing with my hands tied, I would have won."
"And how exactly are you disadvantaging yourself?" His vocabulary was one thing he could have taken pride in but never seemed to.
"You'll see," you said with a budding smile.
The game was reset. It wasn't like you had miraculously become a master. But everytime Draco started planning ahead in his mind, you had time to think of ways to avoid him getting what he wanted. Even when he put you into check you had been able to have a piece nearby that could take out his. It wasn't until you and he were on the last piece each that the game finally ended. The match came to a draw.
Draco was quiet as he glared at you. You knew he hated to lose. He hated being second best. Coming to a draw was, in a way, losing. Especially considering that you had done a lot worse in the last game.
You stood up and moved to the back of his chair to loosely wrap your hands around his neck and shoulders. As you were bending around the chair to rest your head right by his ear, Draco pushed himself into an awkward angle. You could see the frown on his lips as his eyes tried to focus somewhere on your face. Considering that you were almost nose to nose with him because he had moved that was easier said than done.
"I told you that I was trying to play without really trying the first time."
"Why let me win the first match? To humiliate me after?"
No one in the common room really seemed to care that you and Draco had been playing chess in the corner. Much less that you had come to a draw in the second round. Even Draco's large shadows by the name of Crabbe and Goyle didn't care as they were probably still at the great hall. So it wasn't like there was anyone for him to be humiliated in front of.
"Relax Draco, I wasn't trying to humiliate you," you told him in a whisper, gently tilting your head so that it was easier to see him too.
His eyes were narrowed to the point that you couldn't really see the cool gray tones. Mostly you could just see long dark eyelashes that most older girls would have been jealous of. Against the lightness of his skin in the flickering firelight they looked darker than they probably were in daylight.
"What?" Draco asked agitatedly.
"It was just easier to understand what you were thinking when you were focused on the match like that," you told him honestly as you used your dominant hand to brush along his forehead all the way down his face until it rested back into position.
"Stay out of my mind Dorian," Draco told you coldly. "I never said that you could go through my thoughts."
You drew back at the sharpness of his tone. He was right of course. You had never asked him. Of course it wasn't often that you'd purposefully waded through them; other people, yes, but not on purpose with Draco. Whenever you understood what he was thinking of in the past it had been just accidental glimpses. You hadn't really considered that he didn't want you to overhear or see any of those thoughts. He didn't try to sort through your mind during the game; not had anyone in the past. Which meant that yet again you had violated his innate rights by not asking permission and that made you feel horrible. You received his energy without his direct permission when you had wrapped your arms around him on top of having just invaded his mind; your aunt was right to worry about her son around you.
"Understood," you said quietly as you moved away from him.
You moved quicker than normal to put away your pieces of the chest set. Draco stared at you as you did which only made you feel worse. No doubt he was angry about the fact that you'd been doing something without his permission again. You kept your eyes lowered and hurried out of the common room as soon as you were able to. As you hurried off with going to the library in your mind, you never bothered to look back at the boy you'd left more than a little confused.
Draco watched you go with furrowed brows and a frown. He was still upset that you had cheated and technically beat him the second round. That much was true. He was also confused. You'd gotten up to hug him where everyone could see. As the gracious husband he was trying to be he hadn't said anything to your inappropriate display as he assumed you needed the energy. Why else would you hug him if you didn't want the energy to play another round? But when he said he didn't want you going through his mind it was like all the logic left the room. You'd cleaned up all your pieces and hurried out of the common room despite the fact that it was almost curfew time. Why were you hugging him if you were just going to leave?

"Are you okay?"
You looked up to see a bushy haired first year standing nearby. When you'd gotten to the library you'd gone to the least searched section and taken a seat at one of the desks. Thoughts of what you'd been doing to Draco without really considering all aspects raged through your mind in a heart thumping hurricane. Regardlessly you nodded and just hoped she left you alone with your thoughts. The whole point of going to a section of the library that next to no one visited was so that you didn't have to sort through everything going through your brain while trying to ignore someone else's.
"You don't look fine," so pointed out abruptly.
"I came here to think," you told her honestly.
"I see," she remarked. "You realize that it's almost curfew don't you?"
She no doubt meant that in a helpful way but the tone she used almost seemed combative.
"Yes," you said shortly back to her. "But if you're so worried about the curfew, why are you here?"
"I'm looking for a book."
"What book?" You asked dully as you let out a deep breath.
The sooner she got her book, the sooner you'd be left in peace. The young Gryffindor seemed like the kind that would leave once she got exactly what she wanted; she didn't seem like a time waster at least.
"Notable Magical Names of Our Time."
You scanned the books around you as quickly and thoroughly as you could. It just so happened to be on a shelf beyond either yours or the other girl's reach. So you focused on the title and pulled it down. It made a great thumping sound as the hard cover hit the table below the shelves.
"There," you told her shortly. "Now you have it."
The bushy haired Gryffindor stared at you with wide eyes as a quiet idiom fell from her mouth. "Holy crickets. You just performed magic didn't you?"
So much for getting time to think over the efficacy of your actions. You nodded at the younger girl's inquiry.
"You didn't use a spell or a wand," she pointed out, still impressed apparently.
"Wands and verbal spells aren't necessary for everything," you told her in an attempt to calm the girl's whirlwind of thoughts. "Think of the magic you performed before coming to Hogwarts. None of that magic was aided by a wand or proper spell right?"
It was the girl's turn to nod. "But all the first year textbooks I've read on spellcasting and magical theory bring up using a wand or at the very least a chant."
"You'll learn more about it in later years I suppose," you hoped. If you were the only one able to perform magic in its more natural state by the time you graduated that would be a little sad. "Or you can try to read more about it yourself. The section on alternate magic is a couple shelves away."
She looked excited. Funny thing was that she wore Gryffindor's colors and not Ravenclaws. The behavior she displayed seemed far more suitable for the knowledge seeking house rather than the lion hearted one.
"My name is Hermione Granger. You are?"
"Dorian Black.
"Pleasure to meet you," she said in a rushed yet polite tone. "Thank you for your help by the way."
As she said that last part, she'd reached out and grabbed the book to hold it close to her chest. You nodded with a quietly returned response. Hermione turned around and started to walk off. You laid your head back on the reading desk and took a deep breath. Unfortunately after a couple of seconds you could practically feel how she stopped to look back at you with how tense and awkward the air had gotten. You tilted your head towards her, rolling your forehead till one of your cheeks touched the desk instead.
"You really should get back to your common room you know. Or you'll get into trouble."
"Thanks," you told her in a dull tone. "I'll just be a few minutes more."
That seemed to satisfy the first year. Hermione hurried out of the library with the goal of getting back to the Gryffindor Common Room as soon as possible. You on the other hand just relaxed and tried to sort through all the guilt that had built up.
You were sapping energy from Draco without his direct permission anytime he was near, more or less. Not like in the same room type of near but you had to be in his personal space. Which meant that to avoid that you needed to maintain your distance better. Unfortunately, even though the Slytherin Common Room seemed to be the largest from what you'd experienced in everyone's head, there was only so much you could do in the common room to avoid him. Especially if you got there first and he just joined you out of habit. That meant you needed to spend more of your free time away from the place; the library would probably serve if you could find a place next to a source of heat.
Avoiding him would also lower the risk of going through his thoughts without his permission as well. If you weren't making eye contact all the time you wouldn't be able to after all. And without being right next to him you wouldn't absorb his energy without his permission either. So the answer to your ethics problem was pretty straight forward.
You had to distance yourself from Draco.
