Chapter 35
Alexandra
As usual I woke up bathing in sweat and tears. I heard Pixie talking to me in a calming way, stroking my hair. My throat was sore, which meant that I had probably screamed in my sleep, I knew that it wasn’t real, but I couldn’t stop crying. It had been so awful.
‘What time is it?’ I asked Pixie, drinking some of the water that was on my nightstand to ease the soreness in my throat. ‘It is a little before 4 miss, you go shower, I is making your breakfast’ she replied.
I felt better after I had showered. Pixie served me breakfast in my room, seen as my parents were both still asleep.
When I was done, I changed into my training outfit, braided my hair and left for Tom’s room at the end of the corridor. I smiled as I knocked, it was 4.50, he couldn’t berate me for being late this time. The door opened, and I entered the darkened room, like I had every day since my training had begun.
Like every other day, Tom was waiting for me. ‘Are you ready?’ he asked, I nodded, and closed my eyes, knowing what was coming. In a split second he was in my mind. I didn’t push him out right away like I had the first time he did this, however, I showed him fake thoughts, fake memories. Just when he thought he was winning, making me lose control I pushed back hard, and burst trough the barriers of his mind. Grabbing the opportunity, I delved into his memories en thoughts, looking for Regulus, I was not interested in anything else. I had sworn to protect my friend, and I took that very serious. I pulled up a memory, but just when I tried to study it, I felt Tom pushing me out. I wasn’t having that, I pushed back, resolved to look at that memory. It became a battle of wills, but in the end Tom won and I was pushed back out, the connection broken. I sat in my chair, catching my breath as if I had just ran for an hour. Even Tom looked affected ‘that was good, way better than yesterday’ he said. To postpone looking at him, while I emptied my mind, I took a sip from the small bottle of water I had brought. ‘The thoughts you showed me, they weren’t real?’ he asked. I shook my head ‘They weren’t, I wanted to know weather you’d notice my lies, when you didn’t I managed to break trough your defenses because I made it look like you were winning.’ I stated, proud of my accomplishment. ‘No one has ever tried that approach, it seemed to work’ he told me. It was not our objective to make the occlumency work, I needed to be able to lie without anyone finding out, and be able to know when I was being lied to. The first part was easy, I managed to block Tom out within the first two days. Telling lies with my mind had taken up the past two days, it was only the being lied to that required effort. Since Tom didn’t like me delving into his mind, he had me practice that with Malfoy, who was a very convincing liar. After occlumency we would get to my favourite part of the day, dueling. Dueling was done at the beach, so we headed out. Halfway I noticed that Tom wasn’t following me anymore. The moment I realized that, a masked figure appeared out of thin air, shooting a curse at me, I had him flat on his back in record time, and the next two masked figures appeared. Great, I thought, this is a test. I easily did away with the next few opponents, until I found myself surrounded by masked figures. I took a second to evaluate my situation. Deciding on a course of action, I did my best to close my mind, not giving anything away to my opponents.
I managed to kick the legs out from under the nearest one, and used him as a human shield for the stunning curse that was aimed at me.
I couldn’t keep up the weight, so I pushed him at the nearest attacker, both lost their balance, and I used the moment to stun him as well. I ducked the next few curses aimed at me, and waved my wand at the remaining attackers. My spell bound all of them together, and I disarmed all of them at once.
I made it to the indicated spot, meaning I had passed the test. Tom appeared, he disarmed me with a wave of his hand.
I panicked, I was not supposed to use my elemental powers, and wandless magic had never been my strength, it usually led to me using elemental magic, but I couldn’t do that now.
Tom stepped forward, and I dodged the curse he aimed at me. Shielding without a wand was out of the question I would have to use my elemental magic. Tom fired another curse at me, I was too slow, it grazed my arm, I refused to admit defeat. I crouched, and touched the sand. It rose to form a pillar to catch the next spell that would have hit me otherwise. ‘Weak’ he hissed at me. I grinned at him, the pillar had just been a decoy, while he had been paying attention to my sand pillar, he lost focus, giving me the upper hand. I commanded the water of the sea to wash over him. ‘You are defeated’ I told him, when I relaxed the water around him, to knock him out with a wandless spell. I stood there for a minute, not really believing that it was over. I heard clapping behind me, and turned around, Tom stood behind me. I looked at the figure I had just knocked out, but it was gone. ‘That was a magical projection of me that you fought, it simulated a real fight between the two of us’ Tom told me. ‘You did well today, as I expected. From now on we’ll only be working on your occmulency skills.’
‘You’ll make a fine dark daughter once you graduate’ Tom said I looked at him, not sure how to react, I was not big on his anti-muggle agenda. ‘You would be one of my most trusted, as the best friend of Regulus, it would be like family.’ He must have sensed my hesitation, because he put his hand on my shoulder and said ‘just promise me you’ll think about it’ I was quick to make that promise, I would talk to my father about this first, but not right now. ‘I have some business to attend to tomorrow, so no training’ he told me as he left.
I sat down on the sand, to watch the sun rise. The sound of the ocean always calmed me, it was one of the reasons that I had asked Pixie to leave the windows open at night, to I could hear the sound of the waves. When the sun was completely up, I made my way back to my room, to prepare for the day. I knew Regulus would be waiting for me at breakfast, so I changed quickly, putting on my bikini, mini shorts and a pale pink tank top. I gathered my hair in a messy bun, put some mascara on my lashes and was ready to go. When I shut the door, I looked towards the end of the corridor, where Tom’s room was. As I was looking, the door opened, and Regulus made his way out of the room carefully. I smiled, and waited until the door had fully closed, then I sneaked up on him ‘caught in the act’ I said, making him jump in fright. ‘Damn it Lex, you scared the crap out of me’ he said. I started laughing, the expression on his face was priceless ‘I’m sorry Reg, but you were being to stealthy, yet so ignorant of your surroundings.’ I couldn’t stop laughing all the way to the restaurant for breakfast.
When we reached our usual table, Malfoy moved over towards us. When he approached the table, I nudged Regulus with my foot. ‘Good morning’ Malfoy greeted us, taking the chair next to me and sitting down uninvited. ‘Sorry to break up your cosy get-together’ He stopped talking when the waiter gave us our coffee. ‘I have rented a boat for today, I wanted to know if you’d join in a little excursion around the island?’
Regulus waved his hand in my direction, indicating that it was my decision. I loved boats, but I also knew that Regulus got seasick most of the time.
‘I’ll join you’ I told Malfoy, leaving Regulus to decide for himself, as I expected, he respectfully declined. Malfoy got up and told me when and where to meet him for the excursion. ‘Sorry to leave you to fend for yourself Lex’ Regulus apologised. I laid my hand atop of his, in a comforting gesture ‘no worries, I know you get seasick’ I replied. He smiled sheepishly ‘Also, Tom is leaving this evening, if everyone if gone, I can spent the day with him almost unnoticed.’ I understood, he cared for Tom a lot, and he wanted to spend all the time he could with him.
‘I suggest you get moving then, pack up some breakfast, and surprise him.’ He looked at me puzzled ‘breakfast in bed’ I said, wiggling my eyebrows in a suggestive way. Once he caught on, Regulus packed up a few things, thanked me and left me sitting on my own, hiding my smile in my coffee.
