Chapter 35 Phoenix rising

Nina padded into her bathroom, still bleary eyed and feeling utterly content as Kali ran her a bath.

�The Snape is very worried Miss.�

�Hmm? What about Kali?�

�About you Miss Nina. He is frightened that you is not coming back to him. That the sharp toothed one is going to kill you. It is being hard for him to accept that you is doing this alone and wishes to protect you.�

�Oh Kali I know. But he can�t. I�ve tried to tell him that I�ll be alright. I promised him that I�ll come back but he doesn�t believe me.�

�He is thinking that last night is yous last night together. That is why Kali is letting you stay all night. But I is still keeping an eye on you both. To make sure you both is not doing the two is one.�
�Well he will get a nice surprise tonight when I come back tonight then won�t he. Only don�t let him know that you watch Kali. He doesn�t like it.�

Kali grinned at her.

�I knows that already.�
At breakfast Albus told her not to go to class as he wanted to speak with her in his office.

She knew what it was about.

When she arrived with Severus, it was to find Mr and Mrs Weasley, Moody, Fred and George, Tonks and Kingsley all waiting for her. Along with about a dozen others who she had never seen before.
Nina scanned her eyes around the room before turning to Severus.

�What�s going on?�
�Nothing. But you need to tell everyone exactly what you have told us. As much as you possibly can. Perhaps there will be some way that we can come to your aid of it should prove necessary.�
�Where�s Mr Lupin?�
�He refuses to come until he must. On the day of the full moon itself he is very unstable. Also he would normally have taken his Wolfsbane by now. This time he cannot. It makes him unpredictable at best.�
So Nina sat and told them all what she could.

Moody growled angrily. �There must be some way to stop this.�
Albus stood. Nina. Would you be willing to come to the Room of Requirement and give a demonstration? As you did when you first arrived at Hogwarts. I think that it would set many minds at ease.�
Nina nodded. If it got them all out of her hair then it was worth it.

�I suppose you all want to take the bus.�
There were a few puzzled looks and comments before Severus turned to her.

�Meaning?�

�Nothing. I�m just feeling a bit grumpy. Take no notice.�
Severus took her hand and Albus told everyone to join hands and link with either Severus or George, who had taken her other hand.

In the blink of an eye there were many stunned faces around the room.
Nina whispered Severus that the room was protected so that any of the unforgivable could not be detected, before she went and stood against the far wall. Severus told Albus what she had told him as she went.
�Go ahead.� She told them.
Once again there were puzzled looks from everyone.

The Headmaster and the Potions Master nodded at each other, then at Nina. She nodded back with a smile.
The two men began firing hex after hex at Nina, building up speed and intensity as they did so. The others all frozen to the spot and looking on in absolute horror at what was happening.
The girl was just standing there. Everything that was sent at her was seemingly absorbed by her. She did not bat an eyelid.
Moody lat out a loud roar. �Stop.� He yelled. �What the hell are you doing?�
Nina came forward.

�It�s okay Mr Moody. You join in too. All of you. Don�t hold back. With anything. Including unforgivable. They wont be detected.�
�Nina.� Fred and George shouted together. �Are you bloody barmy or what?�
�No I�m not. Tonks. Would you try something please. You too Mr Kingsley, Mr Moody. You can start with something simple. How about Avada Kedavra?�
Tonks fell to her bottom in shock.
�Oh for Merlin�s sake.� He growled as he aimed his wand at Nina.

She waggled her eyebrows at him cheekily as he shouted �AVADA KEDAVRA!�
There were screams as a bright green light flew out of his wand and surrounded the young woman standing alone against the far wall. When Albus added a Crucio two people fainted.

But once the spells had ended and Nina gave them all a deep bow, the room was silent. Totally silent. Several wiping tears from there eyes because they thought that they had just witnessed the murder of a young woman and their brains had not yet caught up with their eyes.

It was Moody who broke the silence with a very loud curse.

�Fuck me pink.� He said.
Fred and George laughed. But it was more of an hysterical laugh as they walked unsteadily up to Nina and looked her up and down before throwing their arms around her.

Arthur Weasley was kneeling on the floor, holding Molly tight after she had fainted. He was in shock himself and had not yet thought to revive her.
�I cnt bth.� Nina mumbled to the twins.
�What? One of them asked as he released his hold.
�I said I can�t breath. Phew. Thank you.�
She walked back to Severus and Albus, grinning.

�Well they weren�t much help that time were they.�
Albus answered her. �It is not a common occurrence to be asked to cast hexes at an unarmed person. Especially the unforgivables. There is also the fact that many of these people here care greatly for you Nina. How would you react if say, I were to cast the killing curse at Severus here.�

�I�d hate it. Though if I were holding onto him he would be okay.�

As she was speaking, Severus had taken her place at the wall

When she turned to find him gone Albus aimed his wand at Severus. They had already agreed that they would test the strength of his dragon Goddess blessing at this time.

Nina still didn�t know about it and she screamed when Albus cast the killing curse at him.

When the curse ended he stood with his eyes closed tight and his hands on the sides of his head as Nina ran to him and sent them both crashing into the wall.

Her hands were all over him, trying to see where he was hurt and checking to find out if he was still breathing as she cried and cried.
Albus came over and removed Severus� hands from his head.

�Severus? Are you hurt? Your head.�

�It�s not my head Albus, it�s my ears. That scream nearly burst my eardrums.� He looked up to see all of the Order standing around them in a semi circle and looking amazed.

�How?� Nina asked him. �You can block it. How?�
�Later.� He told her, staring into her eyes.
She could hardly see him for the tears in her eyes.

She raised her fist and struck him as hard as she could across the face.

His head whipped back with the force of the blow.

Severus sat there in shock as she hit him again and again and again until Albus grabbed her and pulled her away from him.

Then she began to strike him too.

�You should have told me.� She screamed at him. �Why didn�t you tell me?�

She only stopped because Fred and George had come out of their shocked stupor and both had grabbed and arm each. Even then they has to wrestle her to the ground as she kicked and fought against them hysterically.

By the time that she had calmed down to sobbing Albus had sent the Order on there way, requesting that they say nothing of what they had seen and heard until he spoke with them later. He then summoned Poppy.

Only Fred and George remained from the order as she clung to them, crying and still mumbling that she should have been told.

Poppy took in the situation and decided that Severus was in most need of her services.

He had two black eyes, a busted lip, a broken cheekbone, multiple bruising to his face and chest and three teeth missing.

�Who did this to you Severus?� She asked as she ran her wand over him and began casting spells to heal him.
When he turned his face in Nina�s direction she nearly dropped her wand.

�Nina did this?� She whispered.

�Are you kidding? She did for them both Madam Pomfrey.� One of the twins said.

Poppy�s jaw dropped as she looked at one of them after the other. Each nodding as she met their eyes.

�But why? How? She couldn�t.�
�It matters not now Poppy.� The Headmaster told her. �I think that perhaps we deserved it?�

Albus had fared a little better then the Potions Master. He was missing only one tooth, had only one black eye and multiple bruising to his face, chest and arms.

As soon as she had finished with the two men and replaced their teeth she turned to Fred and George. �What about you two? Are you hurt at all?�

�Us. Where fine aren�t we Fred? Yep. Right as rain George.�
�Right then. I shall take Nina with me to the infirmary. I�ll give her a mild sedative and sleeping potion when we get there. Then I�ll take a look at her hands.�
�No Poppy. See to her hands here please. Anything else can be dealt with in my office.�

Poppy harrumphed but did as the Headmaster said.

The boys kept a hold on her as Poppy cleaned and healed the lacerations on Nina�s knuckles, followed by a salve to take away any residue pain.

�Well I do not know what you did to drive her to this state, but do not let it happed again.� She told them before leaving via the floo.
�Erm. Do you think it�s safe to let her go now Professor?� Fred asked.
�I certainly hope so. But do it slowly. Just in case.� Severus told them. He had taken a severe beating from the little chit and had done nothing at all to defend himself. He did not know if he would, or even could refrain a second time.
Fred, who had been sitting on her legs, moved back but kept a grip on her ankles. Just in case. George was sat behind her with his arms wrapped around her. He loosened his grip also but kept hold of her wrists. He too was wary and did not want a taste of what the older two had received.
Fred let go of her ankles and stepped back quickly.

�She�s all yours brother.� He told George.
�Thanks a lot.� George leaned his head to the side. �Nina. If I let go, do you promise that you wont slug me?�

Nina didn�t answer. She just sat.
�I can take that as a yes then. Okay. I�m letting you go. Just don�t hit me and don�t fall over when I let go.�

He released her wrists and shot out of the way. Just in case.
Nina still sat there.
�Err. What now Headmaster? Can we go or do you need us?�

�No Fred, George. Your assistance was invaluable. Thank you.�
The boys shot to the floo and left.
Severus and Albus looked at Nina and then at each other.

�Do you think we should have told her?�

Severus asked.
�Indeed I do. It is the first time that I have ever been bested by a young woman. What about you?�
Severus just nodded and got to his feet. Brushing himself down.

�And it shall be the last.� He told the Headmaster. �You bring her. I got it worse than you.�

He stalked to the floo with an expression on his face like that of a petulant child.

Albus leaned over slightly and took Nina�s hand.

�Nina?�
She ignored the hand and got to her feet.
�My office.� He told her sadly as he made his way to the floo and disappeared through it.
Nina arrived at the same time as Albus and he sat in the armchair near the fire. Severus was already seated on the sofa, sulking.

Nina eyed them for a moment and tuned her back on them when she heard a soft trilling.

She looked up to see Fawkes watching her. The phoenix spread his mighty wings and flew over to land on her shoulder.

�Hello.� She said quietly. Stroking his feathers.
�Think your words to me child. I can hear you.�

Nina eyes widened in surprise.

�I didn�t realise. Your beautiful. Do you know that?�

�It has been commented on from time to time. But none but you can converse with me this way.�

�Doesn�t the Headmaster talk with you?�

�I can give him images He is also Empathic so he can often guess my moods. But only you have the ability to converse with me in this way.�

��Oh. Do you want me to give him a message then?�

��No. I have been waiting for you and come and speak with me.�

��I didn�t know that. Sorry. Though Kali did tell me that I had to meet with you. But I thought that someone would tell me when.�

�It matters not. You are here now. We must leave for a while.

�But what about them?�

�They will not know. Their time is frozen.�

Nina looked round at Severus and Albus. They weren�t moving.

�It�s as if someone has stopped time.� She thought.
�That is what I told you child. Come. Our time together is short.�
Fawkes and Nina appeared in a place only known to the phoenix.

There were no trees, no fields, buildings, sky above or earth beneath her feet.

�Where are we Fawkes?�
�The Realm the Phoenix. You are the first mortal to see this place�
�It�s beautiful.�

Whatever direction her eye�s took there was colour, soft pastels, bright neon�s, everything in between. Above her and below, all around was just a myriad of colour that took on no shape or form. It just was.
�They come.�
�Who comes Fawkes?�
Fawkes. Instead of replying to her, spread his wings and took flight.

Nina�s eyes followed his direction. What she saw took her breath away.
Heading towards her were no fewer than fifteen Phoenix. Not counting Fawkes. And they were a sight to behold.

As they neared Nina could see that they were all slightly different. Where as Fawkes was red and gold, others had brilliant blues and orange, yellows and purples.

One, much smaller than the others, was pure silver.

Nina watched in awe as they all came to land at her feet, seeming to float atop the swirling mass of colour that surrounded them all.
�Oh!� Was all that came from her lips.
The silver phoenix turned to Fawkes. �She is the one. You have done well Tavin.�
�I thank you Prine. She is ready.�
Fawkes now turned to Nina.

�Here is Prine. She is �Veritas Omnia Caritas� to us.

Truth Unity Love

Nina curtsied. She didn�t know what else to do.
�That is not necessary.� Prine told her in mind speak. �You have laid on hands with Prine, so now must you do with all our kind. Urga. Come forward.�

Tavin and Prine sang a soft melody as one by one the phoenix came forward. Nina laid a gentle hand on each at their approach.

�Urga� The first one said as she gently stoked her hand along it�s back.

As soon as she removed her hand it joined in song with Tavin and Prine.

�Onu� was next followed by �Igta�, �Oke�, �Noph�, �Vade�, �Ipsute�, �Nage�, Gebe� and more. The names seemed to go on for Nina and she couldn�t remember them all.

Then the song ended and Tavin approached her again.

�Lie down child.�

Nina lay down on her back and the Phoenix surrounded her in a perfect circle.

Prine moved to stand at her head.

As Nina waited, wondering what was going to happen, a shadow fell over them all.

�Here is Sapphrine. He is all.�
And Nina stared up at the largest Phoenix of them all. He was pure gold. His colouring was so bright that she had to close her eyes yet she could still see the golden glow from him as he landed at her feet.

Automatically she tried to lift her arm over her eyes so that she could look at him. But her arms would not move. Nor her head. Every part of her seemed to be held down by some hidden force.

Prine had seen the sudden fear on her face. �Do not fear child. No harm is meant for you. Only good. Do not try to lay hands on Sapphrine. Trust. That is all we ask.�
Nina tried to nod but couldn�t. �Okay.�

Tavin nodded to her.
�The one?� Sapphrine asked of Prine.
�The one.� She replied.
�She is pure?�
�She is.�
Nina had managed to open her eyes slightly and was squinting down her body, watching the great golden Phoenix. Wondering what he was going to do.

�You fear me child?� He asked her.
�Yes.�
�That is good. If you fear, you respect. Is that not so?�
�I suppose so yes.�

�That is good. If you respect you are watchful, careful. Trust fear always. You will remember that.�

It wasn�t a question so Nina didn�t respond. She wasn�t too sure if she was meant to fear him or not now.
As she waited he lifted his wings. Nina thought he was going but he id not. He lifted only high enough to land on her thighs. Slowly Nina felt as if she were rising up into the air, but she was unable to turn her head. Instead she moved her eyes. She could see the other Phoenix lowering from her line of vision. Just as they disappeared from her view Sapphrine wrapped his great wings around her, his head rested between her breasts, the point of his beak on her brow.
�What are you going to do?�
Sapphrine�s eyes met hers and she felt her fear begin to dissolve.
�You shall fear when the time comes to defeat the Dark. You shall fear the Dark itself. You shall fear for the one you love. You shall fear for all mankind. Only when the Dark is finally gone, shall your own fear follow. Until that time, you shall feel peace. There has been much sadness for you. No more.�
Slowly she could feel them going down until the other Phoenix were back in view.

Sapphrine lifted his head to Prine and nodded.

Together, the two Phoenix lowered their heads over Nina�s.
�Open your eyes child.� Came the gentler voice of Prine.
Nina widened her eyes as Prine and Sapphrine each cried a tear into them. She blinked, expecting them to sting but they didn�t.

But when she opened her eyes Prine and Sapphrine were gone.

She turned her head to see the other taking flight. Only Fawkes remained.

�Fawkes? Tavin? What should I call you?�
�When we speak this way, you shall address me as Tavin. To all others, I am Fawkes.�
�Tavin? What just happened?�
Tavin flew onto Nina�s knees and put his brow to hers.

�Most believe there is only one Phoenix. Today you have met all. Today you have learned the true power of the Phoenix.�
Nina gave him a puzzled look.
�It will come to you as you need. Tonight, you shall not be alone. Come. We must return.�
A moment later they were back in the Headmasters office. Fawkes/Tavin was sat on his perch, his head under his wing as in sleep and Albus and Severus were looking at her.
�Well. Sit down. We do not have all day.� Severus told her.
She was thrown for a moment. After what she had just experienced she had forgotten all about the ROR.

Sitting down on the chair opposite Albus she waited to see what they would say.
�It would seem that we made a grave mistake in not informing you about Severus� new ability.� Albus told her.
�Perhaps now you understand what it is like to be kept uninformed.� Severus added.
Nina looked at him stunned.

�I thought you were dead you fool. I thought he had killed you. It�s not the same. I wanted to die too.�
Is that why you attempted to finish what you thought Albus had not?�
�What? No. I was scared, angry, hurt. I lost it. I don�t know. It was a really shitty thing what you did. Both of you.�

Her eyes turned suddenly to Albus when he chuckled.

�It�s not funny.�

�No. That is true. But hearing you say shitty is.�
She glared at him.
�I am glad that you find it amusing Albus. Personally, I did not enjoy having my face mashed by a chit of a girl.�
�Nor did I Severus. Nor did I. But in this instance, I think that we got what we deserved.�
If truth be told, so did Severus. Though he would not admit it.
�I�m sorry for that.� Nina told them. �I shouldn�t have done it. But you should have told me. You shouldn�t have let me think that you were dead. Why did you do it? Was it to get your own back over Mr Lupin? At least I told you before anything happened.�

�Is that what you think? Severus asked her amazed. �That we were on some petty revenge crusade? Well you are wrong. It was not our intention to scare you. Nor had I any intention of dying. It was not done to hurt you. Merely to show the Order that I too now have the ability to avoid the Avada. Nothing more.�

�Nina.� Albus leaned forward and took her hand. �Severus and I only discussed this this morning. I admit that we did not give you a second thought when we came to our decision, For that, I am truly sorry. Your feelings for Severus should have been taken into consideration.�
Nina got up and walked over to Fawkes.

�Tavin.�
The Phoenix lifted his head and met her eyes.
�What should I do?�
�Forgive them. Would you not wish for the same, were you them?�
�Yeah. Tavin?�
�Yes?�
�Should I tell them about�you know, today?�
�Do you wish to?�
�I don�t know. I just think that there have been too many secrets. But I don�t want to upset you and the other Phoenix either. Please tell me what to do.�
�You may tell your mate that you have been on a journey with me. You will give no names. You shall not speak of what occurred.�
�Thank you Tavin.�
Tavin/Fawkes burst into song. A song that made all in the room feel at ease with one another as Nina returned to her seat.
�Can we�your sorry. I�m sorry. I forgive you for not telling me. Will you forgive me, for hurting you both? Please.�
Both men nodded and Tavin/Fawkes ended his song.
�I suggest that we say no more about it, but that we all agree to take each others feelings into consideration in the future. Are we all agreed?�
�We are.� Severus told him.
�Me too. Is it lunch time yet? I�m starving.�
This time both men gave a small chuckle. Before heading off with Nina to the Great Hall.

It had been quite a morning.
Severus� classes were covered for the day. Professors, Sprout, Sinistra and MacGonagall sharing his classes out between them.

Fortunately Poppy had done her job well and there was no evidence of the injuries that Nina had inflicted on Severus and Albus. The main problem was that it would take a day or two until their teeth were properly set. And Severus had three loose teeth to contend with so he was on a soup diet. This did not impress him. He liked food that he could bite into.

Albus was okay because he could chew at the other side of his mouth.
�Aren�t you hungry?� Nina asked the Potions Master.
�Yes.� He tried not to grit his teeth as he answered.
�Well why are you only having soup then? You don�t usually have soup.�
�I do not usually have to worry about my teeth falling out of my head.� He hissed.
�Oh. Right. Sorry. I�ll sort it out after lunch for you.�
He looked at her from the corner of her eyes for a moment and back at his soup.

�Follow.� He growled.
Nina followed him into the small ante room that was the teaches entrance and closed the door behind them.
�What?�

�If you can fix my teeth, do it now. I hate soup.�

She giggled. �Okay. But you�ll have to bend down for me.�

�This had better not hurt.�
�I don�t know. Tell me when I�m done.�

With that she grabbed his shoulders and pulled him down, giving him a hard passionate kiss.
He was taken by surprise and responded immediately.

Nina plunged her tongue directly into his mouth and ran it around his teeth, making sure that she touched each and every one. She had no idea which ones she had knocked out. Only that she had.
When she pulled away Severus took a deep breath.

�Well that was certainly worth loosing a few teeth for. Now what? Was that to compensate for the pain when you fix them?�

�No you twit. I�ve just fixed them. You can eat what you like now. Just don�t tell Poppy on me.�
�Definitely not. Thank you. Perhaps you should do that again. Just to make sure.�
Nina grinned. �I�m already sure but��

She did not get chance to finish her sentence as he grabbed her and invaded her mouth, just as she had his only moments before.
Nina�s afternoon was spent with the Potions Master. First he allowed her to watch him working in his lab; on condition that she stay out of his way, did not try to interfere and kept her mouth shut.

She found it too difficult so he threw her out, checked on the Wolfsbane and went through to his study.
�What part of �keep your mouth shut� did you not understand?�

He asked.
�I understood. It�s just hard not to say something when�oh never mind. What do you want to do instead?�

Severus raised his eyebrows and looked at her.

�Do you really need to ask?�
�Not that. Much as I want to. I have something to tell you.�

She told him.

�Not more secrets. Have you been keeping something back from me?�
�No. This only happened today. This morning actualy, just before lunch.�

He sat beside her on the sofa. He was puzzled now. They had been with Albus the whole time. What could possibly have happened?

�I�m all ears. Go on.�

�Well for a start, you can�t tell the Headmaster. I�m only allowed to tell you. Okay?�

He nodded.

It was when we got back from the ROR. You remember I didn�t sit down straight away?�

He nodded again.

�Well I went to Fawkes. He was singing.�
�Yes. You got up to stroke him and he sang as you returned.�

�No. Before that. Just after I entered the office Fawkes sang. You and Albus were kind of�frozen in time I think he said. You ...well you both just sat there not moving or anything.�
�And?�
�Well, Fawkes took me somewhere. I don�t know where it was. Only that there were lots of lovely colours everywhere. He told me that I could only tell you that he had taken me on a journey and that only my mate could know about it. That�s it. I went. It was pretty. I�m confused. End of story.�
Severus looked at her slack jawed for a moment.

�What do you mean, end of story? You have told me nothing�
�I�ve told you what I�m allowed. I haven�t kept it from you. I�ve been honest with you.�
�And that�s it? So now what?�

�I don�t know. Like I said, I�m confused myself.�
�Very well. You have told me. I suppose that we must leave it at that. Though I do not like it.�

�Well it�s not my fault. Anyway, what about that idea you had for filling in the rest of the afternoon? I could go with that.�

Severus met her eyes and with no further ado, he grabbed her and hastened into the bedroom.

I was a couple of hours before they re emerged into the study.

It was a very flushed and happy Nina who spoke first.

�I have to go. I need a shower and some clean clothes.�

�And then?�

�Then I�ll be coming back here for the Wolfsbane. I promise I�ll come straight back here as soon as Mr Lupin has gone home.�
�I will hold you to that promise Nina. You'd better come back safely to me.�

�I will Severus.�

She flung her arms around him and kissed him again before disappearing to her bedroom.
�Miss Nina. You is getting ready now?�
�Yes Kali.�
