CH 35 Carried.
Next morning, Kreatcher woke her at seven o’clock, informing her that her bath was ready and how pleased he was to be serving a decent witch instead of traitors and mudbloods.
“Kreatcher you promised.” She told him. No more name calling and we both have to try and make friends remember.”
The old elf sighed as he floated her to the bathroom. “Kreatcher will try miss.”
“And call me Lou, not miss. If we’re gonna be stuck with each other, we may as well start by being friends with each other, what do you say?”
Elf’s doesn’t have friends miss, is not right.”
“Well we does, I mean do. Go on Kreatch, for me, please.”
“Kreatcher will try, but is not being easy.”
Lou gave him a smile that made the old elf feel odd. He didn’t know what the feeling was but he wanted more of it and did his best to make Lou happy so she would smile at him again.
Once she was dressed, Kreatcher produced a small piece of parchment. “I is told to give this to you mi …Lou.”
It was from Severus.
A simple spell to keep Peeves at bay.
‘Terres
’ No wand movement is required, only discrete aim.
Use this spell none verbally, reveal it to no one
In addition, do not reveal who gave it to you.
SS
(a/n. Terreio; I terrify)
Lou smiled happily to herself. To her, this short note confirmed that Severus was still her friend, regardless of how he spoke her last night. She let Kreatcher put her shoes on and opened the door into the common room.
Lou was back to feeling like a fish in a bowl when all eyes turned to her.
‘Oh well, here goes nothing.’ She thought and took a deep breath.
“Morning all. Oh dear, does it show?”
After a few muttered comments, someone said; “Does what show?”
“My extra head, I thought it must since you’re all staring at me, or maybe it‘s the horns.” She told them with a cheeky grin.
There was a stunned silence, followed by a few smothered giggles from several of the students.
“Think your clever don’t you?” Malfoy spat, walking up to her.
“No I don’t, but I have to live here the same as you, I don’t see the point in trying to alienate everyone when from what I hear, we’ll have enough enemies from the other houses. I’m sorry if I offended you on the train, but you started it. Can’t we just agree to differ and leave each other alone?” Lou kept her eyes locked to his, refusing to be cowed again. At least the common room was full and he was unlikely to try to hurt her unless they were alone. She hoped.
Draco stared at her coldly for a moment and a slow sneer spread over his face. “We’ll see —
freak. If you behave yourself and don’t give me any more cheek, I might consider letting it go, this time. Nevertheless, be warned, I will be keeping an eye on you. Step out of line.” He warned her, his hand coming to rest on her right thigh. “I will make you sorry you were born.” He squeezed her leg painfully before smirking and turning to leave, his cohorts following.
As soon as he left the common room, Lou let out a long breath and winced at the pain in her leg. Malfoy’s thumb had pressed hard against the wound, making her feel sick. She pulled a phial out of her pocket and drank the pain potion down quickly, before starting when a hand gently touched her arm.
“Are you okay?” Asked a tall girl with long brown hair and glasses.
“Err, yeah, I think so. At least I will be when my stomach turns the right way up.”
“You were really brave standing up to him you know.”
“Nah, stupid more like.” Lou burst out laughing and the other girl laughed with her.
“Stacy, Stacy Beachwood, you’re in my year.
“Lou Black.”
Stacy introduced Lou to several more girls, Bernice, who liked to be called Bernie, Anna, Robyn and Nichole.
“I might forget your names for a while, but hi.”
Lou was grateful to have the group with her as she headed for breakfast her first day at Hogwarts. They all took their time so Lou could keep up with them and she felt almost happy as they left the dungeon corridor and crossed the main hall.
As soon as they entered the Great Hall, she spied Hermione, Ginny, Ron and Harry and made a beeline for them.
“Hiya you lot, everything okay?”
Lou, what happened? I thought you were gonna ask the hat to put you in Ravenclaw?”
“I did Ginny, I practically begged, Ravenclaw or Gryffindor I said, but it wouldn’t listen. Stupid lump of rag that it is.”
“Well it must have put you there for a reason Lou, just be careful of Malfoy, he’s trouble. And don’t forget we’re still your friends.”
“Thanks Hermione, I wont. I’ve already had a run in with Malfoy last night, but I stood up to him this morning and I think he might leave me alone now, so don’t you go worrying about me. Look, I have to go, if I don’t get something to eat my bellies gonna complain all morning.”
She made her way to the Slytherin table, pleased that her Gryffindor friends would stay her friends.
Stacy, Bernie and the others had saved her a place and she sat down happily to eat her breakfast.
“It’s not a good idea to mix with Griffindors.” Robyn told her. “They hate us and we hate them.”
“Yeah, they’re our biggest rivals.” Anna put in.
“I can’t help that, they’re also my friends and I’m not gonna stop talking to them just because we’re in different houses.” Lou told them, thinking that now the Slytherin girls probably wouldn’t want to talk to her any more.
“Well just be careful Lou, what happens in Slytherin, stays in Slytherin. Remember that and there wont be any problems. Don’t tell them anything, okay?”
“What would I tell them anyway? They’re my friends, but I don’t tell them everything.”
Severus watched her covertly from his place at the head table. He was pleased to see her enter in the company of girls her age; he was not so pleased when she made her way to Griffindor table. It simply was not done. When she eventually made her way to the Slytherin table, he noticed the Slytherin girls had saved a place for her. So she was integrating, that was good. He wondered if she’d had any more problems with Malfoy. It was clear to him she was being intimidated when he entered the common room last night, it was no surprise to him, but she refused to tell on them and clearly it did not seem to be bothering her now. Maybe she did have some Slytherin in her after all. However, he would need to keep an eye on Malfoy. Severus noticed the boy watching her since she entered the hall; even now, he was slyly looking down the table at her while pretending to listen to Zabini, who also glanced down the table occasionally.
When the hall was flooded with owls, delivering the morning post, Lou watched as most everyone received a letter or package. There were lots of packages delivered to the students and she guessed it was things they’d forgotten to pack. Robyn got two letters and a parcel full of sweets.
As soon as he finished eating, Severus stood and made his way to his house table to began handing out time tables to the first years. He had one left and made his way over to Lou.
“Miss Black, here is your time table for the next nine months. Stick to it and do not be late for your classes.”
He stalked from the hall, his robes billowing behind him.
The girls huddled closer to Lou to find out what classes she was taking.
“Hey, you’ve got mostly the same classes as us, how come you don’t have to take Divination? We all have to.”
“Don’t be silly Anna, how would she get up all those stairs, and the stepladder?”
“I forgot about that, you don’t have to do Muggle studies either, how come?”
“I don’t know Nichole, maybe because I’ve lived with muggles for the last fifteen years.”
“What? You don’t mean you’re a mud …muggleborn?”
“Would it bother you if I was?”
“Of course it would, only purebloods ever get sorted into Slytherin.”
“Don’t be too sure about that Bernie, but for your information, no, I’m not a muggleborn. Personally, I couldn’t give a fig where or how someone was born, if they’re okay with me, I’m okay with them.”
“Shh.” Stacy told her. “Malfoy’s watching you, him and his friends.”
“So what? Stacy, I’m not gonna change how I think for him or anyone else, and neither should you. Right, I’ve got Charms first, then Ancient runes, what’ve you lot got?”
“Same as you, come on, lets get our bags and we’ll go.” Anna said.
Lou followed them back to the dungeons. She discovered the password was ‘Serpeni.’ ‘Latin for serpent, how fitting.’ Lou thought dryly.
She went to her room to get her things while the others headed up stairs to get theirs. She lifted her skirt to check her bandage and found a big red stain in the area that Malfoy had pressed hard with his thumb. “Shit.” She muttered.
Lou wasn’t sure what to do. She didn’t want to miss her first ever class, at the same time, Severus would go spare if she left this and it became infected again. Lou didn’t want to go through having to have the damned thing opened up again.
“Kreatch.” “Please, will you get Madam Pomfry for me? And be nice to her.”
“Five minutes later, Madam Pomfry was entering Lou’s room, while Stacy, Bernie, Anna, Robyn and Nichole, were in the doorway wide eyed and staring.
“Lou, what’s happened?”
“Nothing. You lot get to class or you’ll be late, I’ll be there as soon as I can. Tell Professor …whoever it is that I’m sorry.”
“Okay, and its Professor Flitwick. You’ll like him.” “See ya.” They all shouted before heading off.
“What happened Miss Black?” Pomfry asked as she removed the bandage.
“I bumped into something; I’ve been a bit clumsy lately. Nerves I suppose, about being in a new place and everything.” Lou told the medi-witch.
“I see, then how do you explain the four finger sized bruises on the inside of your leg? Who did this to you?”
“What bruises?” Lou hadn’t realised there’d be bruises as well. She’d hardly felt the pressure from Malfoy’s fingers for the pain from his thumb.
Madam Pomfry showed her the marks and waited for an answer.
“I …I probably did it myself, you know, when I bumped it. I think I grabbed my leg because it hurt so much.”
“Really.” The nurse replied. She didn’t believe a word of it, Lou was a very bad liar.
“There you go, all done. I’ll give you a note for Professor Flitwick, explaining why you are late for class.”
“Thanks Madam Pomfry.”
Once the medi-witch left, Lou left Serpens tower and limped to the main hall. Then she realised she didn’t have a clue where the classroom was.
“Louhi, Madam Pomfry told me she’d been to see you. She is most concerned as to how you received your latest injury.”
“Headmaster, I’m fine, honest. I just bumped it that’s all. I don’t suppose you could tell me how to get to charms? I don’t know where it is.”
“Second floor, left hand side. Hagrid waited to take you up there, but he has a class and had to go. He’ll be back to collect you after class, meanwhile I’m afraid you’ll have to make do with me.” He told her smiling.
Next thing Lou knew, the headmaster was floating her up the stairs to the second floor. Now she was glad to be late for class.’ Is this how it’s gonna be?’ She wondered. ‘Carried and floated to and from classes. I’m gonna be a laughing stock.’
Albus, who had been discreetly performing Legillimens on Lou to find out what really happened to her leg, heard her thoughts. “Kreatcher is serving you now is he not?”
“Yes Sir, but only for baths and things I can’t do because of my leg.”
“Good. Ask him to take you to and from each lesson, elf’s can move from place to place in Hogwarts in the blink of an eye. I am sure he will be happy to oblige.”
“I don’t know if I should do that Headmaster. Profe …”
“I shall speak to Severus, don’t worry. Enjoy your first lesson.” He gave her a wink and left her to enter her first ever class at Hogwarts.
She knocked on the door and waited until a squeaky, but loud voice shouted; “Come in.”
Lou opened the door to see a tiny man standing precariously on a stack of books.
“Professor Flitwick? I am sorry I’m late Sir; I had to see Madam Pomfry. I’ll try not to let it happen again. I have a note.” She told him, holding out the note and hoping she didn’t get into too much trouble.
“That is fine.” He told her, taking the note and giving it a cursory glance. “Your friends already explained the situation so don’t worry about it.”
“Carry on everyone while I have a word with Miss Black.”
He jumped off the stack of books and walked over to where Lou sat at the end of a row of desks next to Robyn.
“Now, I understand you have already been educated to year four, and that you have a basic understanding of the kind of thing the class will be learning this year.”
“Yes Sir, at least I think so.”
Let’s see then shall we.” He gave her a parchment that Lou saw was full of questions on charms, the theory and practice of, and basic wand movements. “Get yourself a blank piece of parchment and answer as many of these as you can over the next hour, then I shall have you perform a few practical charms to see how you get on.”
He left to continue his class and Lou sat and read the questions before taking her quill and ink from her bag.
It took her just over three quarters of an hour to finish and she put down her quill and waited.”
“Finished already Miss Black? Good, good. I’ll have a look and see how you have done with these and then we shall see what you can do practical wise.”
Professor Flitwick went to his desk and checked through her answers. He was delighted to find she had answered all but two of his questions. Those she did answer, she got right, and the two she did not answer were trick questions. The charms did not exist.
Next, he had her perform a variety of charms, from first year basics to fifth year OWL level charms the class had not yet covered.
Lou managed about two thirds of the OWL level charms and the little Professor was thrilled.
“Did I do alright Professor? Some of them were really hard.”
“A word after class Miss Black. You did very well by the way.” He added quietly.
Once class was over and everyone had gone, Lou stood at Professor Flitwicks desk, nervously awaiting the result of her tests.
“Well, you managed a perfect score on you written test miss Black. Well done.”
“But I can’t have Professor; there were at least two I couldn’t answer.” Lou told him, puzzled.
“That is because they were trick questions. Two charms that do not exist, and you did not attempt to answer something you knew nothing about. Now for your practical.”
Lou’s shoulders slumped. She knew she did terrible on that one; there were loads that she didn’t know.
“All of the charms you performed incorrectly were fifth year OWL test charms, however, you did perform admirably on the majority of those charms and I must admit I am impressed. I think you will do very well in my class and I am happy to have you here.”
Lou turned pink at the complement. It was the first real praise she’d ever received for schoolwork and it made her feel good about herself.
“Thank you Professor. I’ll try and do my best.”
Just then, there was a loud knock on the door and Hagrid poked his head in.
“Sorry Professor. I jus’ came to take Miss Black ‘ere to ‘er next class an’ I’ve got one o me own soon. Do ye mind?”
“Not at all Hagrid. Good luck with your next class Miss Black.”
Hagrid carried her up two more flights of stairs and they arrived just as the last student was entering the classroom.
“Thanks Mr Hagrid, I’m sorry for making you late for class this morning.”
“Thas alrigh’ lass. The headmaster explained what ‘appened, an its Professor Hagrid when we’re in class, th rest o th time jus call me Hagrid.”
“I’m, Lou, I don’t like being called Miss.” She told him with a grin.
He put her down and left for his own classes, and Lou entered the class for Ancient Runes.
She was again, given a small test to help determine her background knowledge before the lesson went ahead. Again, the Professor was pleased with her unerring results and Lou wondered if she should start making the odd mistake in lessons, otherwise the Professors might get suspicious and the other students would think she was showing off.
Lou really wanted to talk to Professor Snape about this. If she did make mistakes, he might think she wasn’t trying hard enough or was messing about in class.
Hagrid was waiting for her again when the lesson finished, only this time Lou was carried downstairs in full view of the whole school as they made their way to the Great Hall for lunch.
Some of them giggled, some outright stared and several made whispered comments. All the time Lou’s face burned with humiliation and she hoped she would have time to see Kreatcher before her afternoon classes.
Severus was stalking through the main hall when he noticed Hagrid carrying Lou, he saw how embarrassed she was and decided to have a word with her later, discover why she had not yet made alternative arrangements with Kreatcher.
At lunch, Lou did her best to ignore the snide comments that came from Malfoy and his cronies, concentrating instead on her food. When Nichole opened her mouth to say something to Pansy Parkinson about her constant jibes at Lou, Lou shook her head.
“Just leave it Nichole, They’ll get fed up when they don’t get a response, and if they don’t I’ll deal with it myself. I don’t want them starting on you.”
Nichole stayed quiet after that but it was evident that her new friends were protective of her as they each shot scathing looks down the table at the seventh years.
It was double potions after lunch and Lou had a free period after that, since her classmates were taking Divination and she was not.
Back in her room, she asked Kreatcher if he could help her with getting to classes in future so she didn’t have to suffer the indignity of being carried up and down the stairs in view of the whole school.
“Kreatcher can have you in class in less then a moment. Kreatcher is pleased to do this.”
“Thanks Kreatch, you don’t know what this means to me. I have potions next and a free period after that, so we don’t have to start until tomorrow, is that okay with you?”
“Oh yes Mi …Lou. I has got your things ready for yous next class.” he told her proudly, passing her book bag.
Her friends arrived at the door and Lou thanked Kreatcher before joining them.
In class, Professor Snape gave her a questions sheet as the other Professors did, and at first Lou wondered why, since he already knew what she was capable of. Then she realised he had to do this so as not to arouse suspicion amongst the other students. Regardless of her earlier thoughts, Lou dare not make a mistake in this class. He’d know straight away that she was doing it on purpose, and she was discovering that he was at his worst when he was teaching.
Lou thought he was extra mean to the Griffindors they took classes with, docking points constantly for the most minor infractions while the Slytherins got away with all manner of things and earning points for nothing. She kept her head down and answered all the questions.
