LEECH
Chapter 35
Sirius looked up, a slightly nervous look in his eyes, though he did his best to hide it.
“I just wanted to apologise for threatening you, I should never have done that.”
Sirius quickly regained his charming grin. “Apology accepted Kathy. Perhaps we could start again, I’m not a bad person you know, despite my charming persona. Besides, it‘s not everyday I get the opportunity to get a dig in at old Snivellus.”
Kathy kept her tone quiet, but it didn’t detract from the anger and seriousness in her voice. “Mr Black, I apologised for threatening to Leech you, not for berating you for what you said to Severus. That still stands, as does the fact you are arrogant, childish, and mean. Resorting to childish name calling at your age is beyond ridiculous. I don’t like you, I just didn’t want you to think I would really Leech you, because even a mangy dog wouldn‘t deserve that.” She turned away and found herself face to face with Severus.
He raised an eyebrow at the shocked Sirius, offered Kathy his free arm and led her towards the kitchen. He still had his plate of biscuits, considerably diminished now. He was actually delighted at the turn of phrase she’d used at Black, even though she had no idea the man was an Animagus and his animal form was a dog, it was clear by Blacks face that the comment had rankled.
“Severus I’m sorry about firing off like that in front of your friends before, and again just now.”
“First off they are not my friends, at least not many of them, and secondly, it was worth it just to see the look on that mongrels face. You are forgiven. Once this lot have gone, I will explain what Albus had planned.”
Kathy was more than pleased to find Molly taking care of the tidying and washing up. A few simple flicks of her wand and things happened without any effort at all.
After the goodnights were made, Tonks told Kathy that she, Kingsley and Charlie had all volunteered to be guinea pigs, and were staying at the castle tonight ready for experimenting tomorrow.
That upset Kathy almost as much as the evenings earlier events, she didn’t want to Leech these people, even for a minute. It was too dangerous as far as she was concerned.
Just when Kathy thought things could get no worse, Albus set to explaining his plans for her.
After telling her an abbreviated version about the prophecy, the subsequent death of James and Lily Potter, and attempted murder of Harry, their son, Albus justified his reasons for bringing her here. “As you already know, I am hoping you will be able to make physical contact with Voldemort, thus draining him of enough magic that he will be unable to resist when we attempt to contain him. For reasons I cannot reveal, Voldemort must not be killed, it is possible to destroy his body, but his soul will live and most likely he will return in another, more virulent form.”
“I’m sorry Albus, but I really think you’ve had a bit too much wine tonight. How on earth can I get close to some… thing like that, from what everyone says he’d kill me before I even got to look at him. Are you sure he’s even human? And besides, I honestly don’t think I could do it, drain him I mean. I’ve spent my life wishing I couldn’t do this, months learning how not to do it, and now you’re asking me to do the opposite. Why can’t you all just wave your wands and do your magic spells and things on him at the same time? Why do I have to be involved?”
Severus placed a small pot on the coffee table. “This is a pensive, I believe you have read about them.”
She nodded.
“I have deposited a small memory inside that I would like you to see. It shows the Dark Lord as he presently appears. It is not pleasant, but once you have seen what he has become, I will allow you to see another, older memory, of what he looked like before his appearance changed so drastically.”
“She held his gaze for a minute, then eyed the pensive. “Will it hurt?”
“No, you will merely see what I saw at the time it happened. Nothing untoward will take place, he is merely having a discussion with some of his Death Eaters. You will be present at that meeting, but no one will be aware of you, and you will not be able to interact with those present.”
Kathy let her finger hover over the top of the bowl uncertainly, then drew it back. Severus took her hand gently, but firmly, and entered the pensive with her.
“Where are we?” She whispered, taking in the white marble floors, grand staircase and opulent décor.
“Malfoy Mansion. It is where the Dark Lord currently resides.” He led her through a door into a candlelit room and Kathy gasped when she caught sight of a pale, reptilian looking man. He had cold, red eyes, slits instead of a nose and a lipless mouth.
As Severus took her arm and led her closer, she saw long hands with sharp pointed fingernails.
Suddenly they were back in her living room.
She shuddered. “What happened to him? Why does he look that way? He didn‘t have a nose, or lips.”
Albus spoke next. “Before we explain further Kathy, I also have a memory for you to view, it is a memory of Voldemort during his schooldays, what you see will be an even bigger shock then the first memory, but it is necessary that you know the true identity of who is responsible for the murder of your family.”
She waited for Severus to take her hand again and join her in the pensive.
“Oh look, Tomtom. Why’s Tomtom here?” Kathy watched her childhood friend as he made his way down a staircase. It was obvious they were here at Hogwarts. “Tomtom, it’s me, Kathy.”
“He cannot hear or see you Kathy, this is a memory.”
“I forgot. Where’s he going? Where’s the person I’m supposed to see?”
They were suddenly back in the living room again. “Why are we back? I didn’t get chance to see Voldemort before he changed.”
“Yes you did.” Severus told her.
“No I didn’t, you were there Severus, you saw. It was just Tomtom. I… No. I don’t believe you. Tomtom would never do anything like what you said. That wasn’t Tomtom I saw in that big room, it wasn’t. He cared about me, he would have wanted me to be happy. He would have liked David, and my babies. Why are you doing this, telling me lies, showing me things that aren’t true?”
Albus looked sadly at her. “Unfortunately it is true my dear. Tom Riddle is Voldemort, aka the Dark Lord. He has killed mercilessly, and been responsible for the death of many thousand of husbands, wives, mothers and fathers, daughters and sons. Both magical and none magical alike, he does not discriminate.”
She turned to Severus, clutching his coat front. “Tell him Severus, tell him he’s wrong. Tell me he’s lying. Please, say it, say it’s a lie.”
The dark haired wizard was unable to meet her eyes, he turned his face towards the fireplace, the sight of her tears, her disbelief and anguish affecting him more than he was ready to admit.
“I will show you one more memory Kathy, I believe it will convince you that Tom Riddle and Voldemort are one and the same.” Albus told her. Using his wand he removed a long, silvery thread from his temple and gently shook it into the pensive.
Again Severus led her into the memory. This time they were in the headmasters office.
Kathy was startled to see Albus sitting behind his desk and automatically stated to speak to him.
“He cannot hear you, the present Albus is in your rooms. Look carefully, you will see he is much younger in this memory.”
Kathy studied the man at the desk. It was true, although he had some grey in his hair, it was mostly a pale ginger. Even his beard was ginger, and was much shorter. She couldn’t resist waving a hand in front of his face.
They both turned when the door opened and a wizard in black robes entered the room. Kathy recognised him straight away.
“Tomtom.” She breathed.
Her expression turned to horror when the young man lowered his hood. He still looked like Tom Riddle, but his features were not as refined or as handsome as the younger Tom. His eyes were set wider apart, they were cold, hard, a reddish tinge to them, and his nose was broader, flatter, the nostrils showing the first signs of becoming the not-nose she’d seen in the first memory.
“Oh Tomtom, what have you done?”
