James was sitting at the table having breakfast when the
mail came. He was surprised to see a
copy of The Quibbler from Draco, and
there was a bookmark in it. There was no
note with it, so James opened the magazine up to the marked page.
His jaw hit the table when he saw Harry’s face staring up at
him. The title of the article was; ‘Harry Potter Finally Speaks Out’. Under the title in neat handwriting it said,
‘It was Hermione’s idea’.
James groaned and started banging his head on the
table. Sirius came in and rushed to stop
him. “James, what’s wrong?”
James held up the article.
“Apparently Hermione thought it would be a good idea for someone to give
Harry an interview.”
Sirius snatched the magazine and skimmed the article. He frowned and threw it down. “Stupid girl,” he growled.
James sighed. “I’m
sure her intentions were good, but I wish the fifteen year old girl would leave
this up to the adults.”
“I’m sure everything will be all right,” Sirius smiled. He patted James lightly on the shoulder. James went stiff as yet another vision hit
him.
He was standing in the Great Hall, and it looked like a war
zone. Elves, teachers, and even a few
students were milling about, some with horrific injuries, and others tending to
the wounded.
Lucius had is arms tightly around a small blonde boy with
James’ smile and eyes and Lucius’ nose.
Then he saw Severus practically leap into Sirius’ arms and kiss him
passionately.
James shivered and he was back in the present. “Another one?” Sirius asked. “You usually don’t get premonitions very
often.”
James was quiet for a few minutes. “No, I don’t,” he said quietly. “I think I need to go lie down,” he said as
he headed to his room.
Sirius frowned and watched him go. He really wished James would confide in
him. Whatever James was seeing was
clearly upsetting him. With a soft sigh
Sirius sat down at the table and spooned scrambled eggs onto his plate.
A few more months passed by quietly. James was glad that nothing major seemed to
come from Harry’s interview. Harry wrote
to him and told him about a bunch of letters he got, but that was about
it. All correspondence between them was
carried by Melinda of course, and Umbridge never tried to intercept a letter
from that particular bird again.
James detested waiting, but that was exactly what he was
forced to do until Umbridge made her move.
They all knew it was long overdue.
Umbridge was livid when she sacked Trelawney and Dumbledore kept her on
the grounds. Dumbledore added insult to
injury when he hired Firenze, a centaur, to replace Trelawney as Divination
teacher, pointing out to Umbridge that the educational decree stated that the
Ministry could appoint a new teacher only if the Headmaster could not find a
replacement in a certain amount of time.
Even Dumbledore himself was waiting for the other shoe to drop.
It finally happened just before Easter. Instead of going to Harry’s secret defense
meeting, Cho’s friend Marietta had
run straight to Umbridge to confess.
Dobby had heard everything while he was cleaning Umbridge’s room and ran
to warn Harry.
It didn’t do them much good though. Umbridge had rounded up a few Slytherins,
Draco among them, and headed to the seventh floor. By the time they got there everyone was
scattering. Draco, who was mostly making
feeble attempts to catch the runners, deliberately tripped Cho. He was very upset when he met with Harry one
evening only to find out that Cho had apologized and the two were on speaking
terms again.
When Crabbe tried to catch Harry, Draco pretended to trip
and knocked the brute sideways.
Unfortunately Goyle tried to catch Harry and was successful. Draco groaned inwardly, sure that Harry was
going to be expelled, and possibly thrown in jail. He didn’t feel bad for Cho though. He half hoped the Ravenclaw would be tortured
for information. It would serve her
right for what she’d done to his Harry.
His Harry? When had
he started thinking of Harry as his?
Before he could think more about it Umbridge thanked them for their help
and sent them back to their common room while she dragged Harry and Cho to
Dumbledore’s office where Fudge, Dumbledore, and McGonagall were waiting.
Marietta was
also summoned to the Headmaster’s office as a witness. To Umbridge’s disappointment, the girl ended
up not being very helpful. The hex
Hermione had put on the paper they had all signed was in full effect, and she
had the word ‘SNEAK’ written across her face in bright purple boils. All she could do was hide her face and cry.
Of course Marietta
wasn’t the only evidence. They also had
the paper that everyone had signed, which Pansy had so kindly retrieved from
inside the Room of Requirement. Since ‘Dumbledore’s Army’ was clearly written
across the top, Dumbledore confessed to being responsible.
“Tonight was the first meeting,” he explained while Harry
watched in horror. “I wanted to see if
they would be interested in joining me.
I see now that it was a mistake.”
“I knew it!” Fudge cried out triumphantly. “Arrest him!” he ordered the two aurors who
were with him.
Suddenly there was a loud explosion and gray dust flew
everywhere. McGonagall grabbed Harry by
the back of his shirt and pulled him to the floor with her. When the dust cleared Harry saw that the
others in the room were lying on the floor.
Dumbledore strode over to Harry and gently cupped his chin. “Harry, continue studying Occlumency for
me. Do whatever Severus tells you to
do. And above all else, don’t lose
hope. I suspect you will be getting a
surprise very soon.”
When the others began to stir Dumbledore made his way over
to face the wall behind his desk. He
said something in a language Harry didn’t understand, and the wall seemed to
disappear, revealing a dimly lit hallway.
Standing in that hallway was a blonde elf wearing heavy
leather armor and holding a bow. Harry
noticed that his hair was tied back in a braid and he had silver earrings all
along the edge of his right ear, and another one in his left nostril. The elf had an arrow pulled back and Harry
knew who it was aimed at.
Dumbledore stood in the hallway beside the elf and waited
for everyone to get to their feet.
Fudge’s face turned bright purple at the sight. “What is the meaning of this?” he shouted.
A small smile was on Dumbledore’s face. “It’s simple Cornelius. I was at Hogwarts, and now I’m standing in
the palace of Naz’rhiad. I wouldn’t advise following me, that is
unless you want Azriel here to make another hole in your head.”
Azriel stood firm, never taking his eyes off Fudge. “Oh, and Dolores, your other suspicions were
also correct,” Dumbledore added. “I
would be very careful if I were you.”
As the wall started to rematerialize, Azriel
turned slightly and let the arrow go. It
flew silently through the air straight toward Percy, who had been standing in
the corner taking notes, and it went right through his hand.
Percy screamed in agony and fell to the stone floor. Above the scream Harry could hear
Dumbledore’s fading voice say, “Don’t let me forget to ask your father to put a
temporary lock on that portal.”
The room was silent except for Percy’s soft whimpering. “If we’re finished here,” McGonagall broke
the silence, “I’ll take the children back to their common rooms.”
She didn’t wait for an answer but ushered Harry and Cho down
the stone staircase. No one said a word
as they walked through the halls. Each
of them was deep in thought about what had just happened, wondering what it all
meant.
