Draco was looking out the living room window, silent. The group behind him were still bickering and working out details. It had been the same all night. Greg had been no help. He had taken veritaserum voluntarily and had no information besides what he had already told the aurors. Harry kept sending back little tidbits of information. It wasn’t entirely legal- but Harry was probably the only person who could get away with that.
Each member of the group had taken a nap at some point in the past hours, except Draco. He felt as if it was the only thing keeping him in the right frame of mind. One continuous day of pure hell - to go to sleep would make it more unreal.
There was two pieces of factual evidence that was bothering him. If the attacker could perform such magic like the Pupitatis Curse, then he was a highly skilled wizard. More than likely he was a pureblood as the curse wasn’t widely known. However, even with this untold amount of skill and power he didn’t try to disarm Hermione. He went the physical route. That is the part that bothered him. Hermione could hold her own and more than likely defeat anyone magically. But physically, she was an easy target.
Hell, he had proven that feat more than once in the past 48 hours. It had been pretty damn easy to pick her up and plop her onto his bed.
Shying away from the memories of the past couple days, Draco focused on the present.
The other situation that bothered him came to him not ten minutes ago. Harry sent back information about the security wards. The spells set up for her apparition point had gone off like they were suppose to, which alerted the ministry, and silenced themselves when no more danger was present. However, the wards on her new apartment kept going off, and no one knew why. A search on her apartment left it empty and clean. Draco wanted to see the apartment himself, but the aurors weren’t done picking it apart yet. Instead, Draco had the urge to floo to his parents who had left sometime after daybreak. They said they had some books and things at home that Harry might find useful, and left to retrieve them.
There was a loud crack as Harry appeared. Ginny rushed over and once again Draco found it hard to watch the reunion.
Just as before, the conversation went on repeat. Everything they could piece together and knew about Hermione. Draco listened with half a mind. He wanted to nail down what was nagging at him. Half a dozen thoughts and pictures swirled around in his head before they stopped on one picture. The broken sash of her trench coat.
He fought physically…
Didn’t want to use magic…
“Holy Shit!” he muttered.
The room seemed oddly still after the constant movement of the past hours. They all turned towards Draco, who felt like the biggest idiot for not seeing it before.
“What Draco?” Pansy asked curiously.
“We’ve been going about this all wrong. Son of a fucking bitch, how blind have I been!?” Draco started pacing again, seeing the pieces fall together.
Harry made him stop and gave him a slight shake. “What? What is it?”
Draco nodded to himself, gathering his thoughts. “You said it yourself Potter, he likes being in close contact with her without her knowledge. This whole time we’ve been trying to find her, to find out who took her. It’s our goal and priority, I’m not disputing that. But think of last night. The bastard could have easily stunned or disarmed her, but instead he chose to fight physically. Twice he did that. Once in the alley, the second time on our apartment landing. The asshole likes the feel of overpowering her. Of being stronger. That’s his weakness. So yes, our priority is finding the bastard, but at this very second we need to think of anything we can do to keep her physically safe from him.”
“But how can we do that? We can’t cast any charms when Hermione’s not present.” Ginny said rather loudly. Draco flashed around ready to fight it out when he realized she was speculative, not dismissing his idea. He realized she sounded loud because he was actually hearing her talk, not letting her voice become background noise.
“Well, what do we have of hers that she currently is wearing? I remember seeing a bit of her trench coat lying on our landing. We have her blood, but that would be any use since its not still viable. We have the attackers blood. We have both of her shoes which were lost in the struggle..” Harry gestured with his wand and a magical handwriting began to list what he was saying. “The blood would be perfect, but using any spellwork on it could do more harm than good.”
“Wait- Draco, Hermione was wearing a trench coat?” Ginny was looking at him fiercely, her face blazing with hope.
“Yeah, the light gray one, it was shimmery.” Draco made a hand gesture that most boys make when trying to describe something innately feminine.
Ginny looked towards Blaise and Pansy. “A restraining order is performed by the Head of Law Enforcement, correct?”
Both Blaise and Pansy nodded and Draco saw where Ginny was taking this. “Harry is capable of performing the spell, and we could set up one to help her from here.”
“But we don’t know who is attacking her, nor is Hermione present to cast the cast on.” Ron interrupted.
“But I think this could work. That trench coat was a gift from me, I bought it in France. Madame LeGuardie is known for creating a garment out of one piece of fabric, manipulating it to be constructed in the right way.”
Draco broke in. “ And from what Harry said, a piece of that fabric was ripped off. If she is still wearing that trench coat, and we charmed the piece we have-”
“- it should spread to the whole fabric. I’m not saying it will be strong, probably nothing more than six feet…” Ginny and Draco stopped their back and forth to look to Harry, trying to enlist some help.
Harry looked undecided. Draco was ready to chuck hundreds of years of family pride away to get down on bended knee and beg. “It might not be a lot, Potter, and it might not work. But we need to try anything that is possible. If it does work, it will buy her some time. Time is what she needs right now.”
“I don’t have a problem with the idea, I’m just trying to figure out how we could spell it on an inanimate object. That could work, but who are we going to cast this against? We have no definite lead.” Harry mused out loud. Draco let out a heavy sigh. He felt he knew who had done it, but at the same time didn't. The little clues were circling around his head, teasing him.
“We’ll use the top three suspects. Stanley, Krum, and Serpens.” Ginny said eagerly, glad to have something to focus on.
Pansy looked alarmed. “Serpens? Henry Serpens is a suspect?” She asked angrily, her thick brown hair seeming to crackle with intensity.
Blaise moved an arm around her shoulders and gave her a tight squeeze of comfort. “Sorry, I forgot you were napping during that part. Harry thinks Serpens might be a lead suspect. His alibi isn’t watertight, and some co-workers seem to think he was acting a little bit off this past week.”
“But I thought Harry tested each member of the guard with veritaserum?” Pansy asked, obviously confused.
“Still, things don’t add up.” Draco said rather harshly, instantly regretting it. He knew Pansy still had some unresolved feelings/issues about Serpens. He should be more understanding. It was just harder with the possibility that this had happened because appropriate actions in the past were glossed over.
Pansy gave him a look, but didn’t rise to the bait. “Harry, don’t you have some evidence to steal?
