Sitting at the breakfast table with Narcissa, Lucius was in a pensive mood as he went through a stack of papers. He had already attended to what was needed when it came to personal things and was now combing through procedures along with other such rot when it came to what was going to be needed for an emancipation. He assumed that the solicitor they would eventually procure would handle most of it. Being who this was for, however, he wanted to make certain that he knew all that was needed and that the steps that had to be taken were done so that no one could come back later and question what had been done. After all, this was at the behest of the Dark Lord himself and his consort so things had to be handled just so with no one thinking to look at what might be going on behind the scenes.
Leaning back in his chair, brow furrowed, he was skimming through a dry as dust procedure list of just what had to be done and how to go about some things, such as the submission of the paperwork, when he was pulled out of it by the soft voice of his wife. Looking up, he smiled at her slightly then asked, tone soft, “What was that, Narcissa?”
The book she had been looking through having been placed on the table, Narcissa took a sip of her tea then said again, softly, “Something's troubling you, Lucius. What is it?”
“I will concede something is, yes,” Lucius told her with a sigh and nod. Oh, there was! He was still feeling blindsided by what he had learned the day before about their lord and Potter. Part of his brain didn’t want to accept that it was real but he was slowly coming around, especially after rehashing all he had seen of the two since he had first seen 'Evan'. It was just... hard to imagine was all. He supposed, though, that it was the ultimate confirmation that Potter had, indeed, turned away from Dumbledore's way of doing things. For that, he was grateful.
“Would you like to talk about it? If you do, perhaps it won't bother you so much,” she suggested with a soft smile. Lucius, though very stoic and controlled, would, when they were alone, open up about some of it, seeing her as a sounding board. She could, from what he said, be very open minded about topics and see things he couldn't or from an angle he just hadn't been able to. That always assisted him in muddling through whatever troubled him.
With a heavy sigh, Lucius shook his head. “This time I can't. It's been made clear to me that I'm not to discuss it with anyone. And considering who gave that order...” trailing off, he gave his wife a pointed look so that she probably caught on to just who he was talking about.
Quick on the uptake with that, Narcissa gave a firm nod, getting it. “Though you can't discuss the situation itself, what about it is troubling you?” Having been through this enough with her husband before, she knew he could phrase things in such a way that he could dance around giving real facts and still lay out the situation. Even if asked later, she would have no clue what they were really talking about.
Nodding, Lucius thought over what she said. He could, of course, couch what he said in such a way that she would never relate it to any particular topic. Knowing Narcissa, she also wouldn't try to figure it out either. She was well aware how dangerous the dance he did was at this point and wouldn't do anything to put either of them in danger by trying to find out more than he was willing to give up. As it stood, because both of them had been in the Dark Lord's headquarters, if the Ministry started snooping, they were both in danger.
Rubbing his chin in a thoughtful manner, he thought about how to phrase this, or even if he should. It was going to be more of a delicate dance than any other he had done with her. Finally, after a couple minutes, he said, critically, “I've been asked to step in and assist in a custody matter for someone that is underage. That, in and of itself, is going to be hard enough but this is something that is going to be more so because of who is involved.” Stopping, he shook his head, then added, “I also learned about a relationship between two beings that I didn't know about before. That blindsided me. I suppose that's where so much of this is coming from.”
Nodding, taking it in, Narcissa refused to ask for more details or allow herself to wonder who he was talking about. From times in the past, she knew that could lead to something dangerous for both of them. Instead, she backed away slightly and tried to take an overview of the whole situation. “On the child custody matter... is it something that is warranted? I assume, without knowing the situation, it involves removing them from where they are in some way.”
Thinking over how to word what was said, Lucius then nodded, “It is, apparently. More so than most cases of it. It's... delicate, to say the least but the being does appear to be in a situation that isn't a good one. I don't like having a hand in such matters as they are a way for you to end up on the wrong end of a wand if they go south, but this is one that needs to be done if even a quarter of what I've heard is correct.”
“Then do what is needed, Lucius! This is a young person in need of help. Think only of that. The being asking for your help wouldn't have come to you if they didn't know you could handle it,” she told him with a firm nod.
“True, that,” he told his wife with a smile and brief nod of his head. There was a reason the Dark Lord asked his help for such things and that was because he knew what he was doing, more than others did. His connections and what he knew of Ministry workings were the reason for that.
“How directly are you going to be involved in matters? I mean, are you going to have to testify in court or no?”
“At this point, it's more of an assist thing, not a direct involvement other than with some of the paperwork. However, later on, when things start in motion, I'm going to have to interject in some of it, just not where the court is involved. That's the part that is troubling for me. It's going to be more of a delicate dance than any I've done before.” He sighed, shaking his head. This part of the whole thing, where it dealt with Fudge, was the worst of it for him. Sure, he was certain that how the Dark Lord laid thing out was a good way to go about it but he wanted his footsteps in the matter as light as he could get them. Any hint that he was directly involved in anything could bring down a scrutiny that he didn't want to endure and could reveal things none of them wanted out in the light yet. That, more than anything, troubled him.
“If the people that asked you to get involved in this had any doubt that you could pull off what was needed, they wouldn't have asked you, Lucius,” she soothed with a smile on her face. “I'm gathering that you have time to prepare before that part comes?” When she saw him nod, she pressed on, “Then you'll have time to make sure that nothing goes wrong and you do what is needed. It's things like this that you are the best at. Of that, there is no doubt.”
Unable to stop himself, he smiled at her then nodded. “Yes, time is something I have. Not as much of it as I would like, but enough that I can ensure that my tracks are covered and what I need to do with the matter will be handled in the correct way. I believe it's that end of things I should probably focus on rather than worrying about all of it.”
“Pick the part that can get you into the hottest cauldron and work with that,” she confirmed with a nod of her head. Figuring that was probably all there really was on that topic since he couldn't go into details, she moved onto the other thing he had mentioned. “On this relationship... let me ask this; are the two happy with it? There aren't any problems like fighting and people didn't force them into anything?”
Shifting to the new topic, Lucius shook his head, “No, it's entirely consensual and they want it. It's just something that I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around is all.”
“If they are happy together and no one has forced them into anything, I don't see why anyone should question it. Leave them to their happiness and move on. So many never find that anyway so why let it bother you? I'm gathering they are good for one another?”
Thinking back over what the Dark Lord had been like before his 'death' and what he was like now, Lucius couldn't help but admit that Potter probably improved a great many things by just being around their lord. Though he was still Lord Voldemort, he seemed more sane and together than he had been. He also appeared more reasonable. That, Lucius thought, could be attributed to Potter. Their lord also seemed to be content, something he hadn't been in the past. No, he wasn’t all mushy or anything else with Potter but that kiss had shown them all there was a great deal of passion there. Narcissa was right, however; he needed to move on. He was happy with her just as so many were with the one's in their lives. If Potter and Voldemort were happy together, let them remain so. Both had sacrificed so much in this world, or had it done to them by others, that if they found such a thing with each other, more power to them. Who was he to judge on such matters?
Nodding firmly, he said, “As usual, you're right. It's not my place. Though it seems odd to me, they are happy so why question it?”
“Exactly, Lucius!” Settling back in her chair, she sipped her tea then slid Draco's latest letter home down to her husband. “Draco, if what I read between the lines is right, is making friends with Harry Potter. He doesn't say a lot, obviously, but seems to like Mr. Potter. What do you think of that, Lucius?”
“I think he should continue to do so,” Lucius told her, taking the letter and skimming it. “In the end, it's something that can only aid all of us so let him.” The fact that his son and Potter were becoming close was something he did like, especially with what he knew now. He was going to make sure his son also knew he approved. It would have to be a cryptic note, obviously, nothing overt, but he would make known his approval for such a thing was there and to be encouraged!
Smiling a little, Narcissa nodded. “Yes, I think it would be good for Draco.”
“More than you will ever know,” Lucius breathed, making sure that wasn't heard but then smiled at his wife before beginning to ask about how Bella was doing.
It was about noon when Harry finally managed to slide out of the depths of sleep. Though fuzzy and disoriented from having sleep longer than normal, he was quickly able to place that he was in the room that he shared with Tom. His head was in the lap of his lover and Tom was running his fingers through his messy hair. Cracking one eye open, he had to grin. Of course, with Tom being the way he was, he couldn't just sit here and do nothing. Instead, he was going through folders of information. It said a lot, though, that he was here doing it rather than being in the study like he normally would be.
Harry didn't get long to ponder the situation when Tom's voice, sounding amused, finally drawled, “Sleeping beauty finally awakens.”
Giving a snort of amusement, Harry shook his head then sat up, stretching as he did. “I guess I slept longer than I thought.” Sliding out of bed, he said, “Give me a few and I'll be back.”
Nodding, amused, Tom watched his lover go with a small grin on his handsome face. Calling one of the house elves, he had them bring up some tea and something light for Harry to eat. As Harry had slept through breakfast and lunch had just finished being served, he wasn't sure what his lover would want. Sliding off the bed himself, he moved over to the small table in the room, resuming going through the dossiers Lucius had provided him.
Coming back in after several minutes, partially dressed, without his normal robe, Harry seated himself and gratefully poured his first cup of coffee. After savoring the first few sips, he took the plate and began to eat. Glancing at Tom, he asked, “Those the files Lucius brought?” Seeing Tom nod, he then asked, “Anything promising?”
“Yes, I believe Lucius is right about the one that he suggested. From what I'm reading here, he would be best when it comes to suiting our needs. The final approval, of course, will be yours but that would be my suggestion.” Closing the file, he handed to Harry. “Though all of them have their merits, this one seems to be more circumspect about it and has been used before by some of my supporters. Not enough of them to warrant suspicion, mind you, but enough that he seems to know how to be discreet enough for our purposes.”
Quickly skimming the file while he ate, Harry noticed several things that stood out to him, including names he recognized. There were enough purebloods in this file that no one would think twice if he took someone on like this. Hell, even Neville's grandmother used the man. That would be enough to throw any suspicion off them. Just because there was a mixture of light and dark when it came to those that he worked with wouldn’t mean a thing. It just meant that he catered his business towards a higher end clientele was all.
Nodding when he finished a quick glance, he told Tom, “I'll go through them this afternoon and make a choice. You think we'll have a problem setting up something to initially meet then hire someone, or him coming to Hogwarts for meetings?”
“I don't see either of those as a problem,” Tom told him with a shake of his head. “Once you make your choice, we can probably set up something for early in the week to get it all started. Lucius, I believe, can be a conduit for that, though won't be involved. I'm sure he can make it well known that discretion is needed above and beyond most cases. Once Piper learns who he's dealing with, I'm certain he'll take it from there when it comes to things. As for Hogwarts... there is actually something in place for that. As there are so many purebloods or half-bloods that go there with estates that have to be managed, they have something written into the rules to handle such things. Those are the kinds of important issues that don't fall into the areas of can wait until school breaks to be handled. All that has to be done is for you or your solicitor to set up something with the deputy headmistress for a meeting. The school has to honor that. Nor can Dumbledore, because of what the meeting is about, eavesdrop on it to know what's going on. There is a specific ward woven into Hogwarts to prevent such a thing. Yes, there are hoops to jump through to do such a thing but not many and I'm certain Piper is well acquainted with what he needs to go through to see you.”
Settling back in his chair, Tom told Harry, “I do believe we need to set this up as soon as possible. That way it's in place and no one will think twice that you have your own solicitor on retainer when everything happens. I'm sure, because of the fact that it's only been you and the goblins managing your estate up to now, that there will need to be several visits at the school. While doing that, you can take the first steps towards the emancipation. With all that came out over the summer in the interviews you gave, Piper would probably be one to even suggest it to you. That is, after all, his job; looking out for his client's best interests.”
Thinking that over, Harry saw no downside to it then nodded while chewing his food. “Yeah, that does sound workable. I'll go through everything today, since you said we don't have much to do, and we can go from there.”
“Good idea. I think this is one of those things that is better handled sooner rather than later,” Tom told him with a nod.
Setting the file aside to look at more closely later on, Harry then asked, “What else has to be handled today? Anything important?”
“Nothing much, no. Just going through some more of the assessments on those that were brought out of the coma then getting with Barty to set up some kind of training schedule with them. They are, of course, bound to be rusty. They will also need new wands. As they can't very well go out and get one, we'll have to do with them what we did with yours.”
“Right,” Harry nodded. “You think you have enough of them that they can find one?”
“I believe so. If not, I'm sure we can easily come up with some more with the connections I have. The Malfoy's should have some from their family. That will probably be more suited for someone like Bella but the other's shouldn't be an issue.”
Harry was about to answer when one of the elves popped in, obviously distressed. Focusing on the creature, brow furrowed, he was about to ask what was going on, since Tom's elves didn't act this way when the poor thing went on a tangent.
“Masters, yous need to come fast. There is a visitor that came in from a Portkey. I knows not who he is but he be upset and is hexing Wormy! Barty is trying to help but said yous two is needed!”
Brow furrowed, wondering who in the hell it could be, since they didn't give out Portkeys to anyone, it finally clicked in Harry's mind. Head coming up with a jerk, he blurted out, “Sirius!” Immediately, he was out of his chair, grabbed his wand and headed towards the entrance hall at top speed.
Hearing the invocation of Black's name, Tom, too, was quickly on his feet. He had known that Harry had given his Godfather a Portkey in case he needed it. It now appeared that something had taken place to where Black had been put in a position to be forced to use it. That made it to where it behooved him to be there as well. Shifting into his serpentine transformation, he followed his younger lover while his mind calculated just who was in the Abbey at this point. If he was right, it was only Wormtail, Barty, the two of them and those in the infirmary. That could work out well as no one else would be around to see Black until Harry could get him calmed down. No, this wasn't going to be a fun situation to work with, as much of a history as he and Black had, but he would manage. Now, though, he had to worry about what he might be facing before looking forward.
Stepping into the entrance hall, Harry walked into chaos. As the elf had said, Wormtail was on the end of Sirius hexing the living hell out of him while Barty was trying to pull him away and restrain him in some way. As angry as Sirius seemed to be, that wasn't working well, as he would expect. Mentally cursing that the rat was once more in the wrong place at the wrong time, Harry threw himself into the fray, trying to get Sirius to lower his wand. “Sirius, enough! Calm down! Throwing hexes isn't going to help anything!”
Hearing his godson's voice, Sirius lowered his wand and looked at the new being that had a hold of him. Seeing Harry, he slumped in relief, lowering his wand. “Thank Merlin, Harry!”
Having been on the receiving end of a serious hexing by his old friend, Wormtail wanted to get in at least one last shot before he knew the opportunity would be gone. Raising his wand, he was about to unleash a curse of his own at Sirius when Harry's head lifted, green eyes blazing angrily.
Hissing through clenched teeth, Harry spat, “You do, Wormtail, I'll make sure that Nagini gets you as a snack next time you transform into a rat. That's a promise.”
“But not before you are on the receiving end of some serious pain from me,” a voice thundered from the doorway. Stepping in, transformed into what Black would know as Lord Voldemort, Tom glowered at the rat animagus. “Go to your room, Wormtail, and remain there for the time being. I'll let you know when you can come out.”
Whimpering and starting to cower, Wormtail bowed then stammered out, “Yes, my Lord,” before scurrying off but not before shooting a wary glance over his shoulder at the still furious Sirius.
Relieved that the damned pest was out of the room and Sirius didn't look like he was going to keep throwing hexes, Harry asked, “What happened, Sirius?” Looking his godfather over, he winced then said, “You're injured.”
Shooting at wary glance at Voldemort, making sure he was still clutching his wand just in case, he sighed, “Had a run in with a team of Aurors. Was holding my own until more showed up, that's when they left me with little choice but to use the Portkey you gave me.”
Sighing, Harry nodded, “Bloody hell. Alright. Let's get you looked at and any injuries you have treated then see what we can do from there.”
“Alright, Harry,” Sirius nodded, trying to wiggle out of the hold of Barty Crouch. He was hurt but he was certain he would be fine standing on his own.
Thankful that no one else was around to hear Black say Harry's name, Tom said, “You two give him a hand and take him to the family wing. We'll have a look at him there and see what needs to be done or if I need to get the medi-witch to see him.”
Nodding, Harry asked, “You think you can make it on your own, Sirius?”
“I think so,” Sirius said, trying to take a step on his own. The leg that he had taken a heavy cutting curse to didn't cooperate as it should then buckled on him, almost pitching him to the floor. If Harry and Crouch hadn't managed to grab hold of him, he would have landed face first.
“Guess not,” Harry chuckled sadly. “Alright, let us help you.” Nodding to Barty, both of them got one of Sirius' arms draped over their shoulders then, slowly, began to make their way towards the family wing.
Trailing behind after directing the elves to clean up the mess that had been made, Tom told Harry, voice a warning hiss, eyes narrowed, “I forbid you from feeding Wormtail to Nagini. She would probably die from permanent indigestion from ingesting him!”
Unable to stop himself, grinning and chuckling, Harry shot back, “I wouldn't anyway. I like her too much to torture her that way! But he doesn't know that!”
HA! Bet you lot though I forgot about Sirius through most of that, didn't ya? Fooled ya!
