Chapter 33: Sacrifice of Soul
1:18p.m.
Draco looked out across the field,
not wanting to admit what his eyes were showing him. Eris was there, at Voldemort’s
left hand, her black mask in place and her wand in hand. There was no way of knowing if Severus was
amongst the Death Eater numbers, but, if Eris had truly turned, his godfather
was most likely dead already. There was
no way that Voldemort would allow a traitor to live. He closed his eyes tightly and cleared his
mind of such thoughts. He would not
believe it. Until the moment he saw his
friend actually fighting at the side of the Death Eaters he would believe that
it was all a ruse. She wouldn’t betray
Harry. She wouldn’t have betrayed him and
their friendship. He couldn’t believe
that she betrayed them all.

Sirius glanced at Harry after
spotting Eris. He couldn’t stand the
sight of her, the black mask and robes concealing the woman that he loved in a
bizarre barrier of evil. So he looked at
Harry, his godson, a boy he’d come to love as much as if he was his own flesh
and blood. He’d grown into a fine young
man, a strong combination of his mother and father. He looked around him then at all the witches
and wizards prepared to live or die by the outcome of this one battle. Each of them had so much to lose. He no longer felt that there was anything for
him to live for beyond making sure Harry survived this war. If Eris was lost to him then so was his
purpose for living. If he couldn’t get
her back, whole and healthy, then he would take down
everyone who’d ever hurt her and leave himself at her mercy.

There was compete silence despite
the number of people on the grounds. The
two armies were sizing each other up in silence. Eris continued to gaze at the army of the
light until she felt a hand on her right shoulder. She turned her head to see Voldemort staring
at her intently. When he spoke, she knew
that his voice carried to every ear present, the good and the evil.
“It is time for you to fulfill your vow to me,
Eris,” he said. “Bring me your brother’s
head and make yourself a queen.”
Eris nodded curtly and began to
make her way towards the Order. When she
reached the center point, she threw off her mask and robe, letting them fall in
a pile beside her. She felt cold. It was not the chill that came with lacking
emotion, it was that which came when you knew that you’d come to the climax of
all your work. It was that fear that now
that you had every element in place you’re strength would fail you.
She shook off the frost of
uncertainty and called out to her brother, “Come out and face me, Potter! Let’s see what you’re worth without the
sister you betrayed by your side!”
She
watched as several of the others tried to stop Harry from coming forward. Draco and Sirius joined in the struggle,
trying to reach her along with Harry, and the others had to turn their
attentions to them, giving Harry enough time to slip away from them and rush
out to meet her.
Harry broke out into a sprint,
stopping barely three feet from her. His
expression was that of a man completely shattered. He needed more strength than this.
“Why, Eris,” he said in a trembling
voice. “How could you turn on all of
us? You could have come to me. Hell, you could have gone to Remus or
Felicity. We would have gotten through
to Sirius. We could have gotten him to
back off for a while.”
Eris narrowed her gaze and
collected her thoughts. She steeled herself
for what she was about to do.

All Harry wanted was to pull Eris
into his arms and beg her to stay by his side.
He couldn’t kill her, not his own sister. Yet he knew that he’d be hard pressed to
subdue her without harming her, especially if she was out to kill. That was when he heard the voice in his mind.
*Harry, you need to listen to me and not react to what I’m saying.* It was Eris’ voice,
but her expression of rage and hatred did not change.
He focused on projecting his
thoughts into her mind. *What’s going on?*
*Be
quiet and listen,* Eris’ voice snapped in his mind. *In a
few moments, Severus will destroy Nagini and you’ll
be free and clear to destroy Voldemort without fear that he’ll return. Ginny is safe in the Chamber of Secrets with
Severus watching over her until its time for him to come to you. You need…you need to tell Sirius that I’m
sorry, but it was the only way...*
Harry frowned. There were tears in Eris’ eyes now. *What
are you talking about? Why couldn’t you
let us know what you were doing?*
Eris shook her head slightly. *Because
you would have tried to stop me, Harry.
You need to understand that this was the only way to save my children.*
“Children,” Harry whispered softly. “What…how?”
Eris smiled sadly. She spoke quietly, “Ginny will be able to
explain it all to you. What you need to
understand is that there was no other way.
The moment I chose you, Harry, I condemned myself to death. There was no way around it. I made an Unbreakable Vow to Voldemort that I
would bring you to him, dead or alive, when he called in my debt.”
“That’s why you didn’t want to bond to
Sirius,” Harry said quietly. “But there
has to be some…”
“No there isn’t,” Eris cut in gently. “You don’t get out of an Unbreakable
Vow. You fulfill it or you die. Tell Sirius and Draco that I love them. Tell Severus that I’m sorry about what I had
to do to him. Most importantly, make
sure that my children know that I loved them.”
Eris stared to turn away and Harry
lunged at her, grabbing her arm. “You
can’t do this! I won’t make it through
this fight without you.”
He was surprised when Eris grabbed
him into a tight hug. She whispered
fiercely in his ear, “I don’t have any other choice. You’re going to win this thing. I love you and you need to know that the
proudest moment of my life will be my dying so that you’ll live.”
Eris threw him to the ground then
and all he could do was watch in horrified fascination as his sister turned and
marched a short ways towards Voldemort.
She sent her robe and mask up in flames and Harry’s mind vaguely
registered the cheer that went up behind him as she did so.

Eris felt a tremble go through her
as she stopped thirty feet before Voldemort.
With only a moment’s hesitation, she raised her wand and took aim at Fenrir Greyback, the creature
responsible for so much of the sadness in her beloved godfather’s life. “Avada Kedavra!”
“You dare to break your vow to me?” Voldemort
screamed. “You dare to betray me again
after freely returning to me?”
“I never returned to you,” Eris called out.
“Then you die,” he spat out.
Eris squared her shoulders and
swallowed hard. She yelled out again,
wanting Sirius and the others to hear her, “I would gladly die a thousand times
over for everyone I love if it means you’ll burn in hell!”
Suddenly
there was a rushing sound flying towards her.
It was as though hundreds of birds suddenly took flight. As she felt the wind touch her face, she
closed her eyes and pictured Sirius’ face.

Harry heard Sirius and Draco
screaming out Eris’ name as he jumped to his feet and ran towards her. The blood was pounding so hard in his ears
that he couldn’t make out was Eris was shouting. Somewhere, in the back of
his mind, he knew that the rest of the line was advance with him at a run.
The wind seemed to pick up then
and a rushing sound filled the air. He
recognized that sound and tried to run faster.
Eris collapsed just as he reached her and he caught her in his
arms. He sank to the ground with her,
his fingers racing about her neck, looking for a pulse.
He sat in shock, not noticing the
spells being fired off all around him.
He barely registered Hagrid lifting both him
and Eris up and running back away from the fighting. When they were set back on the ground he
pulled Eris into a tight embrace staring blankly at the shocked faces of Sirius
and his friends. What could he say? How could he tell them that the girl they all
loved so much was gone?
