LEECH
Chapter 36
Again they were back on her sofa. She stared at the small pensive, fitting together images in her mind of the three Tom’s she had seen. As much as she didn’t want to believe it, as much as it pained her to do so, she knew without a shadow of a doubt that Tomtom, her Tomtom, and Voldemort were one and the same. “Why did he do it? Why does he hurt people like that? Why?”
“Kathy, you are the only person we know that Tom has ever befriended, shown any feeling for. He was quite protective of you when you were young, but as he grew older, all the old resentments of his past, his background, filled him with hate and resentment. It is my belief that he still cared for you when he finally left the orphanage for good, and that is the reason her refused to take you with him. He wanted you safe. You, and only you. The night your home was raided was a random attack, one of several that night. Tom did not even know you were captured, let alone held captive in the very place he resided.” Albus explained. “My hope is that he still has enough of the original essence that was the young Tom Riddle, and that once he recognises you, he will remember and welcome you. That is when you must use your own power Kathy. Once you are close enough that you can lay hands on him, you must do so. I am not asking you to kill him, but to drain his power until he is too weak to be of further danger to us. If we are lucky you will be able to Leech him to an extent that he will never regain his magic at all.”
Kathy dropped her head into her hands, a million thoughts swimming in her brain. ’How the hell was she supposed to do this? How did Tomtom get this way? What if she couldn’t do it? When was she supposed to do it? What if something went wrong? What if he didn’t recognise her? What if he no longer cared who she was?’ She voiced her questions one at a time. It seemed Albus had an answer for just about everything. He trusted her ability to do this, and strongly believed that she would succeed.
“I think it’ll take a heck of a lot more than luck. If Tomtom does remember me, and if he even cares about me still, he’s still not going to welcome me with open arms is he? He knows it’s not good to touch me.”
“Hopefully by that time, Severus will have the opportunity to explain that he has been working on a cure for you, or at least find a solution to contain your ability. Once he sees Severus making physical contact with you it should be possible to convince him that you are no longer a danger to anyone.”
Albus and Severus were under the impression that he would eventually want to know more about the only woman that had caught the Potion Masters attention enough that he was seen with her on more than one occasion. She still bore a strong resemblance to the child she once was, so it was more than likely he would recognise her, and as for caring, that remained to be seen. It was Albus’ hope that he would still have some semblance of affection for her.
“And what if I do this and I can’t control the power I get from him? You saw what happened with the Hippogriff.”
Severus took hold of her hand again. “What happened with the Hippogriff was unfortunate, the pull of it’s essence was impossible for you to ignore, but you will be given time to draw on your own strengths over the coming weeks, you will learn to take only what you need, or wish to take. And if I recall, you did nothing with that power once you had it within you.”
“And if I recall, you kept telling me I was an supercilious prat for two weeks after that. And I kept having an overwhelming urge to sneak outside and fly.”
“You did not mention that to me.”
“Because I felt bloody stupid, and I wanted to peck at you sometimes when you stood too close.”
His snort did nothing to put her at ease, but only a bit.
The next day Kathy was roused early from her bed, too early in her opinion, then taken up more flights of stairs then she ever believed possible in one building. Even if it was a castle.
Along with Severus, Tonks, Kingsley and Charlie, she watched Albus walk back and forth in front of a stone wall, thinking he was absolutely bonkers as she yawned, only to do a double take when a door appeared.
It opened onto a large sitting room with comfy chairs and day beds, a couple of small tables and a shelf containing an array of various sized bottles.
Kathy was pleased that she could recognise some of them, even in her tired, bleary eyed state. She immediate picked up a large bottle of Pepper-Up potion, sniffed it, and took a sip. The effect was more or less immediate and she felt more alert. “These must be either yours or mine Severus because it worked.”
Severus quickly stepped up to the shelf and began examining the bottles, a frown creasing his brow. “It would appear so.” He agreed testily. ‘How dare the room of requirement steal my potions.’
“Here, gimme some of that.” Tonks reached to take the bottle from Kathy and swallowed a small amount to wake her up.
Charlie and Kingsley did the same. The two wizards weren’t feeling as weary as Kathy and Tonks but they thought it might be best to give themselves a bit of a boost before Kathy began Leeching them.
Severus watched the level in the bottle drop, barely containing a growl, and resolved to check his potions storeroom when he returned to the dungeons. Had he been asked to supply potions, he would have done so, it was the fact they were here without his permission that galled him. Tearing his eyes away from the shelf, he addressed Kathy.
“If you would please remove your gloves.” Then he faced the others, a slow smirk appearing on one side of his lips. “And who is volunteering to go first?”
“I will.” Charlie stepped forward. “What do I have to do?”
“Take a seat Mr Weasley.” Severus said in a tone that would have put the fear of death into most people.
Charlie gave him a grin however, not at all swayed by the man’s oppressive ways.
Severus turned to Kathy and indicated she take the seat opposite Charlie, then sat himself side on to them both so he could monitor and control what happened.
Albus held a piece of parchment, a quill hovering independently above it, ready to take notes throughout.
“Shall we begin? Kathy, you know the procedure.”
Once Severus had given the command, Kathy hesitantly brushed the back of Charlie’s hand with her fingertips, her eyes never leaving the bright blue ones facing her. She repeated the stroke more slowly, then again more firmly. Each touch became more positive until she let her hand rest on his and did not remove it. She felt the faint tingling sensation that warranted the beginning of the drain and removed her hand. She took a deep breath.
“Was I supposed to feel that funny prickling?” Charlie asked.
“Yes, that was the start. Give me a moment Charlie.” After taking a few more breaths she rested her hand back on his.
Again the tingling came, faster this time and she saw Charlie’s eyes widen in surprise. In a matter of minutes his eyelids started to droop and he slouched sideways in the chair.
She felt another hand touch hers and she withdrew her own from Charlie to find Severus watching her closely.
“Is he alright?” She asked him. “Did I go too far?”
“He’s fine, some Pepper-Up potion and he can remove to the far end of the room to discover what effect you have had on his magic. What about you, what do you feel?”
“It’s different to the Hippogriff. It’s like… like I have a great compassion for… dragons?”
Charlie gave her a grin and nodded before taking off with Albus to another area of the ROR.
“Anything else?” Severus asked her.
“Yes.” She said softly. “A feeling of belonging, of always being cared for, wanted. That I would do anything for the Weasley’s.”
Severus screwed his nose up at that last. “And?”
“I don’t know, it’s like, if I had a wand then maybe I could do something with it. Maybe.”
Severus handed her his wand and she tried the ‘Wingardium Leviosa’ on a feather that appeared in front of her. Nothing happened.
“I need Charlie’s wand. Don’t ask me how I know, I just do.”
“Here.” Charlie offered on his return. “I can’t do more than make sparks at the moment, it’s weird. I’ve never been without my magic before, how long will it last?”
“Hopefully not long Mr Weasley. Kathy, take the wand and try again.”
At Severus’ prompting she took the wand and tried again. The feather rose gently upwards and floated there, until Kathy lowered the wand and the feather fluttered back to the table.
Several suggestions were made as to which spells she should try, and every one of them worked. Kathy looked Severus in the eye and wondered if she dare cast the tickling charm on him.
Severus seemed to know what she was thinking and cast his own ‘Protego’. “Don’t you dare.” He hissed.
