The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 36
Severus also told Lucy she was not allowed to discuss the Malfoy situation with the four Gryffindors in the other room. “It is Order business, as such you are not at liberty to debate the why’s and wherefores of the current circumstances.”
“What? Professor Snape, I’ve spent most of the morning pulling those two pompous gi… wizards over the coals, and now I can’t tell them why I suddenly have to act all pally-pally with the… Ungh!” She glared at Severus with all the anger and frustration she could muster, but he took no notice as he got to his feet and turned to leave.
“You may tell them that Draco, and his father, have asked me to convey their… sincere apologies, for the little misunderstanding that occurred between you.” Severus did not mention that he too was likely to be punished by the Dark Lord should Lucy decide to keep Draco as an enemy. Having a Grindelwald allied with one of his Death Eaters sons would be a coup for the despot, and Severus was under orders to ensure that alliance held.
Lucy stared open mouthed at his back as he stalked from the room. “I hate magic.” She groused quietly. “And it wasn’t a misunderstanding.” She shouted at the now closed door.
“Calm down dear, you are just angry at your situation. It cannot be easy for you.”
Lucy turned to look at Mrs Weasley. “It’s not fair, I can’t even choose my own friends now.”
“Yes you can, you only need to pretend you are amiable to the boy. Just be careful, he’s not to be trusted.”
“Well that’s obvious, but it doesn’t make things any easier. What is it with these Malfoy’s anyway? Are they like Lords or something?”
“They may as well be the way they act. They seem to consider themselves royalty, of sorts.”
“Brilliant. Well I don’t care what anyone says, I’m not getting friendly with the little… Mrs Weasley they scared me half to death in that shop. If Professor Snape hadn’t turned up, I don’t know what would have happened. Honest.”
“Probably nothing more than verbal sparring. Even the Malfoy’s are not stupid enough to cast curses in a public place, especially against a minor. Now go on and join the others, and try and put this from your mind while I finish making lunch.”
In a mood, Lucy stormed from the kitchen and made her way along the hallway. She got as far as the living room door and halted. In all honestly, the last thing she needed right now was a questions and answer session about Snape’s new directives. Grabbing her jacket and bag from the peg, she snuck to the front door, opened it, and stepped outside, closing it gently behind her. Giving a quick glance in both directions, Lucy ran to the end of the street and round the corner, before slowing her pace, sticking her hands in her pockets, and heading towards where she hoped to find some shops. Maybe some retail therapy might help, muggle retail that is.
Lucy had not given a second thought to the mayhem she caused by simply walking out of the house, it was only when Molly came to call them for lunch that her absence was noticed.
“She has to be somewhere in the house, all of you start looking.” Molly told the four Gryffindors. “And tell Sirius and Remus to check the upper floors before they come down from the library.”
Half an hour later, Molly had her head in the floo as she spoke to Albus. “I don’t know where she is Albus, the silly girl must have left the house as soon as she left the kitchen, and that was nearly an hour ago. She was terribly upset about the situation with… well, you know.” She did not want to reveal too much, since everyone was gathered in the kitchen at the time.
“I will inform Severus Molly, perhaps she let slip something that may give us an idea as to her whereabouts.”
“I don’t think so Albus, I was with him when he spoke to her, but it’s worth a try.”
Lucy meanwhile was having the time of her life. She had found an internet café and was happily playing games on the computer, interspersed with e-mailing some of her old friends from Montford, and was perfectly content to keep paying for extra time and ordering burgers, chips and coke to keep her hunger at bay.
Only when a rather smelly old man tried hitting on her did she realise it was dark outside, and that it might be a good idea to make her way back to Grimauld Place.
“Shit.” She muttered once outside. Lucy had no idea which route she took to get here. Suddenly remembering the phones she and her gran shared, Lucy swallowed the lump in her throat and slipped back into the café. More than likely she would get a good telling off for taking off the way she did, but at least gran would be able to come and get her.
Unfortunately Lucy did not get chance to even press the send button on her mobile phone.
Angry as hell about being disturbed in the middle of brewing a complicated potion, Severus impatiently listened to Albus’ tale of the absent Lucy.
“It is just as well I placed a tracking charm on her the night I returned from the Dark Lord. I half expected her to attempt to sneak out that evening. The charm completely slipped my mind thereafter. Albus, if you want me to go and retrieve the little brat, I need you to oversee the final stage of the viral potion I am brewing. It is a specific mandrake based potion, and I am under orders to produce large quantities by the time I am next summoned. The instructions are on my worktop, and I have clearly marked what is still to be done.”
Lucy was about to press the send button on her mobile when a hand suddenly grabbed her wrist and yanked her from the café doorway. She let out a scream, only to look up in shock when Severus told her to shut up.
“God, what the hell did you do that for? You scared the shi… “
“Miss Grindelwald, I care nothing for how you feel at this moment, what I do care about is the fact you simply disappeared today, without permission I might add, and told no one of your whereabouts.”
Before Lucy could utter another word, Severus dragged her into the nearest alley, pulled her close and apparate them both to the gates of Hogwarts.
“Get inside.” He roared angrily, unlocking the gates and thrusting her through them roughly.
Lucy was too scared to argue, or protest about his rough handling of her, so she made a run for the main doors while he relocked the gates. If she hoped for an easier time of it from the Headmaster, that inclination left her the moment she stepped inside and saw the irate expression on his face, along with those of Professor Macgonagall and her grandmother. “I’m in for it aren’t I?” She asked meekly, then jumped when the large doors slammed shut behind her.
“I would say you are correct in that assumption Miss Grindelwald.” Severus said, grabbing the back of her collar and half pushing, half dragging her over to where the others waited.
“Gran I’m sorry.” Lucy pleaded, trying unsuccessfully to wriggle out of the Potion Masters grasp.
“For running off, or for being caught. I will not stand for this Lucy, you really do need to begin showing some consideration for others. You have put a lot of people out today, as well as worrying us all to the brink of insanity.”
“I didn’t mean to gran, honest. Get off me Professor. I was upset, and Professor Snape said I had to… ow, get off me.” She complained, still trying to wrench herself free of Snapes grip on her collar.
“Why, so you can run off again?” Severus asked sarcastically.
“I think you are safe to release her Severus, she will not be going anywhere until she gives us a full account of her whereabouts since leaving Grimauld Place.” Macgonagall said.
“I was about to ring you gran, really I was. Anyway, how did you find me?” She asked, turning now to the Potions Master, a sour look on her face.
“That is none of your concern. The staff room?” Severus suggested, looking to the others.
Lucy was made to stand in the middle of the staff room and tell them exactly where she had been, and what she did during her absence. She was scolded, shouted at, and made to feel two foot tall by the time they all finished berating her.
“The new term begins next weekend Lucy, we have decided between us, the Headmaster and I, that it would be best if you were to reside here during the week, and return home on weekends, providing you behave in the interim. I am not prepared to have you take off whenever the mood takes you simply because things do not go the way you want them to. Everyone has gone out of their way to accommodate you since your arrival, and you repay us by running away. I love you Lucy, you are my granddaughter, but I will not put up with this kind of behaviour. You need to learn to consider the feelings of others, and as much as I am loathe to admit it, I cannot teach you everything there is to learn, I am too old. We shall have our time together on the weekends, which is more than any other student at this school has the benefit of. So I hope you will not disappoint me.”
Lucy stared at her gran gob smacked, then burst into tears. “Please gran, I won’t do it again, please let me stay home with you. Please. I don’t want to stay here.”
“It is for the best. I do not like it any more than you do, but at least you will be safe here. I know of the Dark Lords interest in you, and I do not believe Grindelwald cottage to be the safest place for you at this moment in time.”
