As predicted, Fudge named Umbridge the new
Headmistress. But there were a few
things James knew that neither Fudge nor Umbridge did. For one, back in 1622 a newly appointed Headmaster
had insisted on keeping his teaching position as well. It caused a real mess, and the Governors
deemed it necessary to pass a few rules.
The first was that a Headmaster could not hold any other duties within
the school. The second rule was that if
an emergency popped up during the school year and a teaching position became
open, the Governors could insist on choosing the new teacher rather than the
newly appointed Headmaster.
The first thing Umbridge did as Headmistress was to form the
Inquisitorial Squad. These students
would be on the lookout for any prohibited activity and they would be able to
take House points for it. Naturally the
entire squad was made up of Slytherins.
Draco joined so he would be kept in the loop and be able to warn Harry
about things.
It was that morning that Fred and George decided Umbridge was
going to get hers. They no longer cared
about staying in school because they planned on opening up a joke shop
anyway. They had spoken to James about
it a few times, and he agreed to help them.
Their first rebellious act was to set off their entire stash
of fireworks in the main hall at lunch.
It seemed that no matter what Umbridge tried to do, the fireworks either
multiplied or exploded. The other
teachers didn’t even try to do anything about them. Instead, when one came into a classroom, the
teacher would call Umbridge to take care of it.
Harry noticed that they all seemed to enjoy it, especially Flitwick and
McGonagall.
That evening a very dirty and tired Umbridge announced to
the school that due to a few old rules and new decrees they would be getting a
new Defense teacher and High Inquisitor.
She seemed pleased about having someone else to work with her to make
the school a better place.
Harry tried not to think about it. Dumbledore was gone, and it looked like they
were going to get another teacher just like Umbridge. Dumbledore had told Harry not to lose hope,
but he couldn’t help it. Things kept
going from bad to worse with no end in sight.
He had Occlumency lessons that evening, which he wasn’t
looking forward to. He hadn’t practiced
at all and he knew Snape was going to yell at him for it. The Potions Master had lightened up on him
since the first lesson for some strange reason, but whatever the reason, it
didn’t keep Snape from pointing out how awful Harry was was.
Harry knocked softly on the classroom door and entered. “You’re late,” Snape grumbled as soon as he
noticed Harry.
“Sorry,” Harry mumbled.
“Have you been practicing?”
Harry nodded and took a seat.
“We shall see,” Snape said as he pulled out his wand and got
ready to test Harry.
Before they could begin however, Draco burst in. “Professor, Umbridge needs you in the boys’
bathroom on the second floor. Montague
reappeared in one of the toilets.”
“Has he said anything?” Snape asked.
Draco shook his head.
“No, he seems to have hit his head a few times,” the blonde grinned.
Snape rolled his eyes and shook his head. “That man is rubbing off on everyone isn’t he?”
he mumbled as he headed out, leaving Harry and Draco alone.
The two boys just stared at each other for several
minutes. Things had been very awkward
between them since Christmas Eve.
“All right Harry?” Draco asked quietly.
“No,” Harry answered.
“As you probably know, Umbridge has won, and everyone wants to know what
happened last night.
“She hasn’t won yet,” Draco argued. “For one thing, she can’t get into
Dumbledore’s office. She had a right fit
about it this morning. And I know your
dad has some sort of plan. He’s been
having Father do all sorts of things for him.”
“She really can’t get into the Headmaster’s office?” Harry
asked, that small bit of information making him feel a little better.
“Nope,” Draco smiled and sat down beside Harry. “Nobody can.”
The boys sat in silence again and waited for Snape to come
back. Harry debated whether or not he
should tell Draco that he remembered what had happened. One of the major reasons he hadn’t done so
yet was because it might upset Draco that he hadn’t said anything about it for
so long. It was so much easier to
pretend he didn’t remember a thing, and pursue his relationship with Cho.
It bothered Harry that out of all the students who had been
there, Cho was the one Draco caught, but he chalked it up to jealousy. “Why did you catch Cho?” he blurted out
suddenly.
Draco stared at his feet for a moment before answering. “I wanted to get her expelled,” he answered
honestly.
“Why would you do that?” Harry shouted, suddenly very angry.
“Because she’s just trying to use you Harry!” Draco shouted
back.
“How could you even say such a thing?” Harry cried out.
Draco looked Harry straight in the eye. “Think about every time she’s talked to
you. How many times did she mention
Cedric?”
Harry clenched his jaw and started grinding it. He was too angry to speak. He really liked Cho.
“Face it Harry,” Draco sighed. “Everyone heard you arguing in the tea
room. You said you didn’t want to talk
about Cedric, and she said she needed to.
You were the only one who saw what happened, and therefore the only
person she can talk to. She hardly gave
you the time of day last year.”
Harry was still angry, but he was beginning to realize that
Draco was right. “I… maybe but… This isn’t fair!”
Draco grabbed Harry’s hand and gave it a light squeeze. “I know it isn’t,” he said softly.
Harry found himself leaning against Draco for comfort. Draco wrapped his arm around Harry’s waist,
enjoying the closeness. “I know you like
her Harry, but she doesn’t deserve you.
Bloody hell, it was her friend who ratted you all out. She was so focused on getting close to you so
she could talk about Cedric that she put you in danger without a second
thought.”
Harry nodded, too emotionally drained to say any more. He found himself gazing up into Draco’s
silver eyes. “What do you think I
deserve?”
Draco swallowed hard, suddenly overcome with emotion
himself. “You deserve to have someone
who loves you for the wonderful person you are.”
Draco slowly leaned in and pressed his lips to Harry’s,
kissing him tenderly. Harry closed his
eyes and returned the kiss, lightly nipping at Draco’s bottom lip. Kissing Cho had been exciting, but had also
made Harry nervous and tense. Kissing
Draco was easy.
Snape walked in on the scene and cleared his throat. The two boys jumped apart and their cheeks
turned crimson.
“Are- are we still going to- to
practice tonight?” Harry stuttered as he tried desperately to regain his
composure.
“No,” Snape answered, glaring at Draco. “Since it’s so late we’re going to postpone
it until tomorrow.”
Harry nodded and rushed out of the room. Draco returned his godfather’s glare. He stood and started to walk out, but turned
at the doorway. “So I guess you were
right,” he admitted. “But when Harry
finally comes around it’ll all be worth it,” he said as he turned and left,
leaving a flabbergasted Snape behind.

A/N: I wasn’t originally planning it when I sat down to
write this chapter, but there you go…
Harry and Dray kissed! I still
plan on taking it slow and being realistic with these two though. And… and… just guess who the knew teacher is
going to be!
