It was literally a race against time. Or against a werewolf. They took the Floo network from Hermione’s loft to Viktor’s home. Once there, Hermione looked at the world renowned Quidditch player and gave him a hug. “Thank you for all of your help,” she said to him, giving him a kiss on the cheek.
He smiled at her. “Of course,” he responded, returning her hug. He pushed her away. “Now, go! Save ze men.” He looked up to Harry Potter. “I will contact both ze Bulgarian and Greek Aurors. Zey can assist you.”Harry nodded. “Thank you, Viktor. Good luck on your next Quidditch match.”Hermione grabbed some brooms from Viktor’s closet and threw them at both Harry and Ron. “We haven’t much time! Remus could be attacking now, or worse. I don’t know how much that Devil’s snare has grown!”With that, they mounted their brooms. Hermione led the charge, her mind wild with fear. The moon was already beginning to rise and she knew they were not going to make it in time. She just hoped and prayed that they would make it before anyone was seriously injured.(II) (II)“Where are you, Hermione?” Draco whispered to himself as his back pressed against the door.Lucius glanced down worriedly at his only son and at the window near the entrance door. His eyes shifted to Severus. “We should go outside,” he suggested. The Devil’s Snare had grown even more and the men watched in horror as it crept down the hall towards them. The Potion’s master nodded as he began taking steps towards the door as well.Remus gave a low growl. He was still in his correct mind, but it was a battle he was quickly losing. The werewolf shook his head as he tried to control the beast within. “The four of you should get as far from this house as you can,” he told them. “Lock the door and try to build a barrier. Once I transform, each and every one of you will become prey.”“What about the plant?” Draco asked, his eyes widened. “Remus, it could kill you. We can’t…”“Remus will be fine,” Sirius interrupted, pulling Draco away from the door enough to open it. He pushed the young Slytherin passed the threshold. “Devil’s Snare won’t be enough to kill a werewolf, especially one such as Remus. He’s right, Draco. You need to get to safety as much as you can.”Draco looked at his father, wanting desperately for parental guidance. Lucius gave a slight nod of his head before stepping pass the threshold himself. The eldest Malfoy grabbed Sirius in an attempt to pull the dog through as well, but Sirius shook his head and threw the Death Eater’s hold off.“I will remain here,” he told them. “I can hold the wolf off for a bit longer, give the three of you some time.”“Always the sacrificial lamb,” Severus sneered. He glanced at Lucius and, together they both grabbed the dog and pulled him out of the house.Sirius fought them, struggling against their holds. “No! It’s not about sacrifice! It’s about making sure we get as many people out and safe as possible,” he argued, but two men made it difficult for him to fight them. All five of the men had become weaker from the lack of food and little sleep. As a last resort, Sirius changed into his dog form. This change broke the Slytherins’ grips and he was able to get back into the house.“Black! You son of a bitch!” Severus snarled.“What do you think will happen by going back in there? If Remus doesn’t kill you, then the Devil’s Snare will!” Lucius said, his eyes blazing with a mixture of anger and… fear?Sirius looked at the three of them. There was no time for coddling or reassurances, but he still felt the need to give them something and he changed back. “Then let’s hope Hermione has found the boys and those three are on their way,” he said to them. “I will hold Remus off as long as I can. Don’t stay in one place for too long.”With that, Sirius slammed the door shut, effectively closing the Slytherins’ access to the house. He turned and looked at Remus. The two canines sized one another up. Remus shook his head again, trying to keep his senses together. “You should’ve gone with them, Sirius,” the werewolf gruffed. The Animangus shook his head. “I would never forgive myself if I willingly allowed something to happen to you,” he said honestly. They stared at one another for a while. Sirius pressed against the door, his fingers reaching for the knob and managing to lock it. The dog swallowed. “I’m going to change into my dog form now,” he told the werewolf.Remus began pacing and nodded, though he said nothing as his best friend transformed. The werewolf’s eyes flashed as a bit of moonlight spilled from the window. Around him, Devil’s snare grew as the werewolf began his own transformation.(III) (III)For a moment, Lucius and Severus just stared at the door with narrowed eyes. As the older Malfoy reached out a hand towards the doorknob, Draco grabbed his other arm and began tugging on him.“We have to go!” the young man said with a feared urgency.Lucius tried to pull his arm out of the young man’s grip, but Draco was surprisingly strong. “Let go, son,” he growled, but Draco was having none of it.“How long do you think it will take Remus to get pass Sirius? We need to get away from here, at least away from the door, and quickly,” he said, still pulling on his father.Severus sighed. “He’s right, Lucius. We need to move and we need to move fast. Even in his canine form, Black is weakened. While Remus is as well, it won’t take much for the wolf to overpower the dog,” he surmised.“Where do we go?” Lucius asked, glancing around the area. “This barrier isn’t large enough to hide us sufficiently.”“Let’s just move for now,” Severus said and the three men began walking at a brisk pace towards the barrier.A thought occurred to Lucius and he suddenly changed direction. “Come with me,” he ordered them both.Curious, they followed him until he made it to the break in the barrier. Severus sighed. “We can’t fit through there,” he argued. The tall blond shook his head. “We don’t need to,” he said as he stepped up to an oak tree near the barrier. “Draco, I’m going to give you a boost. I need you to climb into the tree and stay there. Wait for Hermione. You can let her know what’s going on.”The younger Malfoy immediately shook his head as he baulked. “I’m not leaving you! Neither of you have any way of defending yourselves and…”“You have no way of defending yourself, either,” Severus argued.Lucius glared at his son. There was a look of sheer desperation in his eyes as he grabbed the young man’s shoulders. “You will do as I say and get up that tree!” he snapped. “And you’ll stay there until Hermione comes for you.”“But…”“Please, Draco!” the man begged. This was his only son. If something happened to Draco… Lucius didn’t even want to think about it. He pulled the young man closer to the tree. “Do as I say and stay safe.”Draco’s bottom lip quivered as he nodded. Tears filled his eyes, but they did not fall. All three of them heard the crashed of glass and turned to look in the direction of the house. The sense of urgency was renewed as Lucius forced the young man closer to the tree. “We don’t have time to argue or you to be defiant! Now, get up that tree and stay there!”Draco stared into his father’s grey eyes, his own identical pupils were misted with his unshed tears. Without warning, the young man threw his arms around his father and gave the older man a tight hug. “I love you, Father,” he said.Lucius returned the hug just as tightly, his own eyes filling with tears. “I love you, too, son,” he whispered against the young man’s ear. “I need you to be safe,” he said as he pulled away from Draco. “And I need you to get up in this tree. Please, Draco. You’re all I have left. Please don’t let me lose you.”Draco sniffed and gave a nod. “I don’t want to lose you either, Father.”“Get up the tree now, Draco. We’ll be back for you once the moon has passed,” Severus assured the young man.Together, the older Slytherins helped the younger one up the tree. All three jumped as they heard an eerie howl split the silence around them. Remus was loose.Lucius and Severus looked at one another. Giving one last glance up at the tree and at his boy, Lucius pursed his lips. “I will see you soon, son,” he promised.Draco nodded and as he watched the men leave he couldn’t help but sense that the promise was hollow. Cold sweat covered him as the two men left him alone. He wondered if he would ever see them again. He prayed that he would.Author's Note: So, I was reading this story the other day and got to the end. I knew I hadn't finished it, but for the life of me, I couldn't remember where I was going with this story. Guess what? I remembered! Lol.
I never had any intention of not finishing this story. Of all the stories I've written, this has to be one of my favourites. I want to finish it, and I intend to. I do apologize for taking so long to update it, guys. For those who are still looking forward to the ending, I hope this chapter will help with the drive. For those who've given up hope, I pray this chapter rekindles an interest in this story. I have another chapter I'm getting ready to post and another I am currently writing.
My muse is back with a vengence! Lol!
