"Gone? Yes... She is no more." Severus supplied, rubbing his eyes.
"Why was it so easy? You two were only gone about half an hour." Adrien said.
"She was... Weakened by the presence of gold in the room. Which is a good thing... Because if she hadn't been weakened by just the very presence of it, I'm afraid Hermione would not be alive."
The two men sat out in the darkened corridor just outside of the hospital wing, awaiting news of Hermione's state.
"I expect that... When she wakes...-" Severus swallowed hard at the coming words. "-There is a chance that she may not remember anything."
Adrien startled at his words.
"What do you mean? She may not remember anything like what?" he rushed.
Severus hung his head momentarily before letting it fall back against the cold stone wall behind them.
"She may not remember you. She may not remember me... She may not remember... Her other friends.. Or even her own name. In light of a traumatic incident, she may not remember anything at all." Severus explained burying his face in his hands.
He fell silent, remembering the way she had been so shy just outside of the Three Broomsticks when she told him she loved him. He remembered the feeling that had grasped his heart, wishing he could hear those words repeated all day, every day. He remembered kissing her, touching her, pouring over books with her. The more he thought of it, the more he felt that he had been in love with the girl for eons of time. This whole situation just didn't seem real.
The dark wizard's heart gave a painful wrench as he recalled peering into her thoughts to see her dreams. An image of her and himself, bathed in the soft blue light of an early morning pouring through the windows, as she lovingly touched his face, and covered his lips with her own. The true desires of Hermione Granger's heart. The true desire of the girl's heart had been him, and only him, and he squandered it for so long, and now he was sitting here in a dark corridor, tearing himself apart over it. Adrien's voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Hey... She's alive... That's all that matters..." he told his father, placing a pale silver ring-adorned hand on his shoulder.
"What did she do to her anyway?"
Severus shook his head. "I don't know. Seraphim magic. One wave of her hand, and the girl was... On the floor in heap."
The door to their right came open, and Madam Pompfrey stepped out. The two men rose quickly to their feet and stared expectantly at the old medi-witch.
"She's awake. But she's delirious. You two may come in and see her for a bit, and then she needs to get rest." she told them.
The two eager men pushed past the old witch and swiftly entered the room where they found Hermione, paler than normal staring up at them, confused.
"Adrien..." she trailed off weakly.
Severus's heart gave way to a relieved feeling. She recognized his son.
"Professor Snape..." she greeted, and his heart automatically fell. She hadn't called him Professor Snape for weeks now, except in the classroom.
"You don't remember anything, do you?" he asked, his tone filled with sadness. His breathing became shaky as he poured himself into an armchair next to her bed.
"Of course I remember. I was attacked. Adrien, I'm so glad to see you." she said as the younger Snape bent to wrap her in a hug. Severus wanted to wrap her up so badly, but he knew she would feel alarmed at his "sudden" liking toward her. He sighed and rubbed his eyes that threatened to give way to tears.
Adrien looked wearily in his father's direction, his own heart sinking at the realization that Hermione had no idea of their relationship.
"I'm... Glad to see you too, Hermione... Glad you're alive." he told her.
"I don't even really remember what happened to me, but I know I was attacked. Are you okay, Professor?" she asked, catching sight of the disgruntled dark wizard.
"Oh it's... Been a long night for him, Hermione.." Adrien supplied for his father.
"We'll go and let you get your rest, Hermione. I need to go and have a word with Madam Pompfrey." Severus said as he rose from the chair. Not waiting for another word, he swiftly swept away from the two, and went into the medi-witch's office.
"She doesn't remember...-" he stopped himself before he said 'me' "-when will her memories come back?" he asked impatiently.
"It could be weeks, it could be months, or maybe even a year, Severus. Why are you so eager to rush this anyhow?" Madam Pompfrey asked with a scrutinizing brow.
Severus went slack and leaned himself up against the wall of her office.
"She saved my life after the war, and she was harmed tonight, helping me solve a problem from a past life." Severus explained.
Poppy raised her brow even higher, if it was possible. "What sort of problem, Severus?"
"She helped me kill a Seraphim. My wife." he told her.
"Severus, I didn't know you were married... Much less to a Seraphim, those are very dangerous creatures." she stammered with her hand over her chest.
"I know that, Poppy, I know." Severus hissed in anger, balling his fist. "She insisted.. She was going to take Adrien away from me, and being that Adrien is her best friend, she wanted to come along and see it done. I fucking knew I shouldn't have.. Oh gods..." he breathed.
"Oh, Severus, you have always been so misguided. Why didn't Albus go to assist you with this?" she asked.
"Albus likes to leave things up to me! As you well know." Severus replied angrier still. "Not to mention, it was my problem, and now that,-" he gestured beyond the door "-is most certainly my problem."
"Severus,-" Poppy sighed. "I can't tell you then. I've never dealt with a Seraphim's magic before. They are very rare creatures! I can't say that Miss Granger's memories will ever come back! But let's hold it in the highest hopes that they do. Or perhaps you can help her remember."
Help her remember... Yes... The old witch had a point.
Without another word, Severus swept from her office, and she followed closely behind to shoo Adrien out.
"Miss Granger needs her rest, Adrien. You can come back and see her tomorrow after your lessons. Now go on." Poppy ordered.
Adrien gave the old witch a grudging look, hugged Hermione goodbye, promised her he would be back, and followed suit behind his father.
"What did she say to you when I was in Poppy's office?" Severus asked once they were away from the hospital wing.
"She asked why you called her Hermione. Look.... Maybe it's not a lost cause, dad... You could, we could help her remember... She's carrying on with me just like she always has. That's still there.." Adrien paused, and Severus halted his swift pace noticing his son stopping in the middle of the corridor.
"What?" he asked over his shoulder.
"Maybe... Just maybe... When Salia attacked Hermione... She wiped her memories of.... Her feelings for you... Maybe as a sort of... Last stand... You know what I mean?" Adrien mused.
Severus closed his eyes in thought. That made so much sense it scared him.
"Oh Gods..." he muttered.
"We can get her back, dad... Just don't give up on her. She never gave up on you." Adrien said as he continued his pace.
"I'll never give up on her." Severus replied defensively.
"I never said you were going to. Look... Maybe when she comes round within the next week or two, you could... Show her memories or something... Let her read your journal or something. Let her know you're not afraid to show her things.. I'll take care of the rest." Adrien assured his father.
"You can't just outright tell her what has been going on between us. It will scare the holy hell out of the girl, Adrien." Severus said as he and his son reached the Dungeons.
"I know that... But I could... Drop hints and... I don't know... Ask her questions. I'll think of something. I always do." Adrien rambled.
Severus sighed again. "Okay, Adrien... Okay. Thank you... Now you ought to go get some rest. I love you. Have a good night."
Adrien nodded. "I love you too, dad... I'll see you tomorrow."
Severus watched as his son turned and made his way back to Slytherin House, feeling colder all the while, as he was left to his taunting thoughts. A sleeping Potion was definitely in his near future.
