Chapter 35
When he heard the front door open, Harry glanced up from the letter to Draco he was writing, but wasn’t too disturbed. He assumed it would end up being Moody because they were going out that night. However, he frowned and his brow furrowed when an old man with a beard down past his waist came in. From what he could tell, this bloke looked a lot like that Dumbledore. He had seen pictures of him, so he knew. Hand slowly reaching for his wand, he relaxed as Remus and Sirius called him by the name Aberforth.
After nods all around, Aberforth sat down with a soft groan, holding his beard down while he did. Once he accepted some tea from Remus, he jumped right in. “Rufus told me to meet up with you lot,” he told everyone, looking around.
“We’re glad to have you aboard,” Severus nodded, sipping his coffee. “You can bring us plenty of information.”
After pulling a scroll out of his robes, Aberforth slid it over to Remus and Severus. “I’ve written down everything I can think of that might help you. The rest—gaveRufus everything I know and answered all his questions. If you need anything else, get in contact. More than willing to help with anything.” He told them sincerely, looking around at everyone.
“We’ll need it as time goes on,” Remus told him. “Of course, we won’t be doing the sneaky and underhanded whatever which happened during the last war, but we have plenty we need to worry about.”
“Not doing the underhanded is for the best,” Abe told them with a snort and shake of his head. “There is plenty to handle and tend to without delving into that part.”
“We do and we see no reason to keep Rufus out of the loop like Albus did with so much,” Severus assured him.
“Good,” Aberforth nodded. “We can get more help and know the whole scope of what’s going on that way.”
“Something we all realize,” Sirius assured him. “Rufus and those under him are best for handling so much. We have other areas to concern ourselves with. Some very quickly.” Then he imparted what Lucius brought up the night before. When he finished, he said, “This is something we have to tend to, fast. Those kids need an out before they’re pressured into becoming Death Eaters.”
“I would say that’s the first step there,” Aberforth agreed. “If worst comes to worst, I can expand part of the pub to house some of them temporarily until you lot can come up with something. Before you say it, I know the place is rough, but I’ll put up spells to keep them safe and no one will know they’re there.”
“That will be a huge help,” Severus nodded after noting it on some parchment. “I’ll pass this to Lucius so he can use it in some way. He’s tending to that end since he has a workable idea and the property to make it work.”
“I’ll be all the help I can,” Abe assured them again.
“We’re going to take you up on that,” Remus smiled. With a sigh, he added, “There is plenty to do here and more will come.”
“Oh, indeed,” Abe grumbled. “The worst is coming, as we all know.”
“All too well,” Severus groused, shaking his head.
“Right,” Abe started, straightening up, “get me caught up with all that’s going on so I’m on the same page as everyone else. Even the smallest of bits since it might connect with something I’ve heard.”
“We can, then you can fill us in on anything odd you might have heard,” Sirius said then motioned for Snape to start.
Though Harry had heard most of it before, he listened in intently like normal. He figured he might pick up things he may have missed before and he might need to know it.
Moody gave a heavy sigh as he passed the copy of the Prophecy Albus owled him that morning to Rufus. “I think the lad needs protected from more than just You-Know-Who.” He grunted, looking more sour than normal.
“Merlin’s baggy boxers,” Rufus mumbled as he looked through what the paper said and Albus’ translation for it. Tossing it down, he leaned back, looking sour and angry at the same time, as he said, “This is—I don’t even want to know.”
“If you ask me, at some point you need to take Albus out of the equation before this grows worse. Let me get all I can out of him then we need to do something before he forces a confrontation. From what he said to me, more the feeling I get than the direct words, he plans to ensure Potter ends up involved.”
“Bloody hell,” Rufus breathed, shaking his head. “We’ll ensure it. I know Sirius, Harry, and Lucius are planning to go out tonight. I’ll take this over to them so they not only know, but will figure out the best way to bring it up to Harry. Then we’ll go from there.”
“And, yes, something needs done about Albus,” he added, looking angry. “James and Lily need watched as well.”
“Not sure they if they know,” Moody admitted, relaxing after taking a sip from his flask. Before Rufus could asked, he said, “Just the way Albus worded it. Not many know and I don’t think he’s told them. They know Harry is a target and they think he’ll end up involved, but I don’t think he told them just what some of it means or how he interpreted it.”
“Maybe he did,” Rufus hypothesized. “Look, they abandoned him on a damned doorstep. If they’re willing to do that because of whatever Albus convinced them of, who knows what they’ll do or agree to. Even what they did agree to. For all we know, they knew about this before they left and its part of the reason they did.”
“True,” Moody conceded with a nod. “However, I just have a feeling about this and don’t think they know everything. If that thing means what the old goat thinks, it means the lad has to die. I don’t see them agreeing to that. Even the worst parents wouldn’t. At least in this way.”
Thumbs twiddling, Rufus thought that over then said, “I say we just watch them for now. I’ll go after Albus with everything I can when he starts sticking his overly long nose into this. If they don’t make a move to press on, I won’t bother with them.”
“Best way to go about it.” Moody agreed with a short nod.
With a loud groan, Rufus shoved the innocuous looking paper towards the center of his desk and said, “I’ll also take this down to the Hall of Prophecy and have them not only look for this one, but see if the translation is correct. If it’s not, we might be able to use it to derail the old man. If it is real, we’ll sort through it from there.”
“Good plan,” Moody said. “We need to do some serious planning, Rufus. I’m trying to get more out of the old man, but that could take lots of time. Let’s just go with the instinct we both have with this and figure out what the hell we do about it. That’s the first thing Severus and Remus will ask you.”
“And I have nothing to tell them,” Rufus groused, shaking his head. “Honestly? I don’t know where to start with it either. Albus—he’s the wildcard and you never know what he’s planning or what he might pull out of his sleeve.”
“I say the first thing you tell them is I’m sticking to the lad like there is a sticking charm on us. As it gets worse, we can have Aurors on him as well. Those two things will relax them slightly. Add on that they now know and can plan accordingly.” Moody suggested.
“I’ll start with that,” Rufus said, liking the idea. “We’ll go from there and try to find something to help the situation. If I have to go to Amelia to put a tracking charm on that old goat, I will.”
“You might want to consider that,” Moody told him pointedly. “The more information we get, the better we’ll end up. We can’t have him blindsiding us with some barmy scheme.”
After grabbing his quill and starting to twirl it between his fingers, Rufus thought the whole mess over then said, slowly, “I think what I’m going to do is take everything we have so far to Amelia. Then she and I will discuss what we can do and how to go about it. Between the two of us, we should have a workable plan in a matter of days. She might know better than me what we can do to stave off the worst.”
“That’s the way to go about it,” Moody said right away. “As long as it doesn’t leak out.”
“With Amelia? No chance,” Rufus snorted, grinning slightly. “You know what she’s like.”
“I do,” Moody told him, one corner of his mouth turning up in a grin.
“Give me a couple of days to sort this then we’ll have at least the basics of a plan on how to go about it.”
“Make sure you tell that lot tonight what you just said,” Moody schooled. “If you don’t, they’re apt to not handle it well. While I doubt they will do anything foolish, you don’t want them worrying too much over it. They might have some ideas as well.”
“I’ll listen to whatever they have to say,” Rufus assured him. Thinking over what Moody said earlier, he asked, “Harry and Sirius are going out tonight with Lucius? Among our kind?”
“If they were going among our kind they’d have me for a tail,” Moody said with a short chuckle. “They’re going to the club they like among the Muggles. It’s in a busy neutral area. They’ll Apparate from the park in front of their house then go there. Perfectly safe.”
“Good,” Rufus sighed. “Let’s see what we can sort here then I’ll go get with Amelia.” Straightening up, he grabbed some parchment and began to jot down what he had to do and suggestions.
“What’s Rufus doing here?” Harry asked Sirius when he came back in from being downstairs. While he spoke, he continued looking in the mirror to get his hair and clothes right. Lucius would be here in twenty minutes, so he wanted to be ready. This way they could spend more time having fun. Though still a bit uptight about the crowds, he was looking forward to just having some fun.
“The normal,” Sirius told him, starting to pull off his clothes. He had taken his shower earlier, so all he had to do was change clothes. “He said nothing to worry about and they can fill us in tomorrow about it. Besides, I think they want to pass on what Aberforth had to say. Just the typical business stuff. If it was anything else, they would have said something and we wouldn’t be going.”
“True,” Harry grinned. “You get hold of Lucius?”
“He’ll be here shortly,” Sirius told him, slipping into the clothes he laid out. “Just putting the finishing touches on. You know him; he’s a peacock that needs to look just right, no matter what we’re doing.”
“Part of his charm,” Harry laughed, sitting down on the bed to pull his boots on. “We’re all used to it by now, so it’s normal. We’d worry something was wrong if he didn’t.”
“Exactly!” Sirius laughed. “I doubt it’s anything to worry about. Just keeping up on everything.”
“One night off of that would be nice since we’ve had to deal with so much.”
“Bet your arse it is,” Harry grinned, standing back up to make sure the wrinkles were out of his clothes.
Giving Harry a nudge as he did up the buttons on his shirt, he told him, “We all need a break once in a while. Even if it’s just one night.”
“And I plan to have plenty of fun,” Sirius grinned. “We all will.”
“Something we need.” Harry nodded, once more glancing in the mirror to make sure everything was in place. Now all he had to do was wait for Sirius and Lucius, then they’d be ready to go.
They were settled in after Lucius came over then popped his head in to see if they needed him. When he was told they didn’t and to have fun, they were ready to start. Rufus then launched in with the worst first. He passed the prophecy to Remus and Severus. He then explained what it was. As the two read it, looking troubled, he said, “We’re on it, trust me. And we’re making plans to ensure that nothing will come of it.”
“I knew he was up to something,” Severus snarled, dark eyes flashing dangerously. “This is bad if the translation is right.”
“That’s Albus’ translation. I have those that work down in the Hall of Prophecy seeing what they can find or if it’s right. When I hear from them, I’ll let you know what they say. Beyond that, I met with Amelia so she knows. We’ll find a way to stop him.”
“I doubt there is any way to stop Albus,” Remus sighed, hands trembling slightly. “Once he has something fixed in his head, he’ll follow the siren song until it’s over.”
“We all know this,” Rufus admitted with a grumble. “This time we’ll be prepared, though. Remember that. We got fair warning this time and know at least a little of what he’s planning. That’s more than what we would normally have.”
“Very true,” Severus conceded, folding his hands on the table and glaring at the Prophecy. With a deep sigh, he said, “We need to come up with some way to start handling it.”
“For now, I think we’re good,” Rufus told them. “We think we won’t have to worry until You-Know-Who makes his first big showing. Then he’ll start to press.”
“Which means we have at least a little time,” Remus said softly. “How much? None of us know.”
“We don’t, but I bet it won’t be long.” Rufus told him. “We’ll use it all, though, for plenty of things. This will be one of them.” Then he began listing things they discussed to help, wanting their ideas as well since they knew Harry better. Before he left, he wanted some bare bones of a plan they could work with.
Sirius laughed as he herded all of them out the front door. This was a good sign. They were all laughing and joking, planning to have some fun and forget the stress. Once outside, he slipped an arm around Harry then guided them all towards the park. Normally, they went to the other side of the park to Apparate into an alley near the club. He saw no reason not to follow the normal routine.
As always, they were making their way slowly, having a good time. Since the park was always deserted, they never paid much attention. After all, they were the only Magical folk in the area. No reason to stay on guard now. Maybe in the future, but for now they were plenty safe.
Hearing Harry laugh at an off-color joke Lucius told him, Sirius just grinned. He could already feel the stress slip away and was feeling better for it.
After making sure they were all in the shadows and out of sight, her eyes peered through the branches of the tree she was behind. They were as ready as they could get and wouldn’t make a mistake. If they did, they would pay dearly. Considering the mission, she would enjoy this and didn’t plan to be a disappointment.
Wand clutched tightly in her hand, one finger tracing over the upraised pattern on it, she watched them as they moved. It was almost time, but they couldn’t jump in just yet. No, they needed to wait and ensure the three didn’t expect anything. They needed to catch them completely off guard. If they did, plenty could be over tonight, at least three troublesome issues.
As her eyes followed them, she grinned manically. From what she knew, all they really needed to worry about was Sirius and Lucius. Little baby Potter was so untrained with a wand that he wouldn’t be a threat. They were warned that he could fight in other ways, but they wouldn’t get into a position where he could do so. No, they were going to finish this quickly. It would be over before they could send for help and it would be hours before anyone would know they were dead.
About halfway through the park, listening to Harry and Sirius joke, Lucius smirked, amused. However, there was something poking him. He wasn’t sure what it was. Brow furrowing, he touched his wand where it was hidden by a spell in his jeans. Stopping, he glanced around but couldn’t see anything off or out of place. It all appeared just normal to him. However, he didn’t ignore that instinct.
Without saying why, he hurried the other two along, acting like normal. As he did, he kept looking around. Hair now standing up on the back of his neck, he knew something was wrong. And they needed to get out of the park, now.
Hand out, stopping the two, he was about to tell them they all needed to Apparate away when he heard a familiar cackling laugh then, like a nightmare you could never forget, people from his past appeared in front of them and spells started flying. They were in trouble.
Still hashing out ways to stay safe and keep Albus away from Harry, the three were startled when Sirius’ dog Patronus came through the wall. When the message he sent was heard, they were on their feet and heading out the door while Rufus sent off messages for help.
This didn’t sound good at all.
