Hermione took a deep breath.
She looked both ways before slipping into the hall. It was unfortunate...but she had to knock out the elf who came in with her bath.
She hadn't left the room in weeks, and to be honest her anxiety was running wild. Deep breath. In....out...
She needed to focus. First, she needed to get a wand. Second, she needed to go find Harry. Weeks ago, Lucius had brought him in and he had angrily called her a traitor.
If she couldn't get a wand...then she would have to make do with her brains alone.
She slipped down the corridor. The castle was old, and she made a number of turns before she finally rigured out where the cells in the basement were.
'What are you doing?'
She looked up. It was Veatris, standing at the top of the stairs.
Terrified, Hermione turned and ran. She ran as fast as her legs could take her, down corridors, until she heard something like Immobilus!
She fell like a pile of bricks.
'LEmme Go!' She sobbed, unable to move.
'Are you mad?' He hissed, kneeling down next to her. 'If we are caught then we'll both be dead!'
Hermione struggled in vain. He lifted her up, and she felt her stomach sink as he carried her through the corridors and back to her room.
After depositing her on the bed he pulled a chair up and said evenly, 'Will you tell me why you did something so stupid? I am obligated to report this. But if you tell me the truth, I will let it slide as a moment of insanity.'
Free, Hermione rolled onto her side and stared blankly at the wall. She didn't answer right away. Several moments passed, until finally she said in a flat, dead tone, 'I wanted to find Harry.'
There was a short pause, and his response was more of a question, 'Harry Potter?'
'Yes. I saw him a few weeks ago. Lucius Malfoy brought him into my room.'
There was silence, so much so that she finaly turned to face him. Veatris regarded her with eyes that were neither laughing or teasing. Instead they looked...pitying.
'What?' she asked, 'what is it?'
'....Harry Potter is dead. I don't know who you saw, but it wasn't Harry Potter.'
Hermione shook her head, and clasped her hands together, choosing to sit up. 'No, I saw him. I'm not making it up. It was him.'
Veatris gently took her hand in his, 'I think you believe you saw him. But it wasn't him, love.'
She shook her head, 'No, no.' And then burst into tears. Her entire body shook from the force.
Veatris sat next to her and wrapped his arms around her.
She should have known. it was just like Lucius to do something so cruel. He probably used a spell. Or a shapeshifter. Or something to make her think she was looking at Harry.
'I knew it was too good to be true. Why would the enemy keep him alive?'
She cried and cried, and then something shocking happened.
Veatris tilted her chin up so that her eyes met his, and he kissed her.
Hermione sat frozen, too shocked to move. And then finally, when she felt her senses returned, she pulled back, and retreated to the corner of the bed.
They stared at each other for severa moments. And then he whispered, 'This could be troublesome.'
