Chapter 37: Some Days it Doesn’t Pay to get Out of Bed
A few hours later, Helena found herself starting awake, her breath gasping and ragged and her heart pounding as the remnants of her half-remembered dream slowly faded away. Severus’ arms were still around her, and he was lying quite awkwardly beside her. Helena’s small form was curled up quite comfortably, her entire body firmly on the bed. But while Snape’s torso was lying across the end of the bed, his long legs were hanging clumsily over the side. And his feet, still encased in their dark boots, were propped against the rug as if to keep him from tumbling over. As Helena tried to slowly ease her way out of his embrace, his black eyes abruptly shot open, and his grimace at the slightest movement left her no doubt that his aching muscles were loudly protesting their prolonged and awkward position.
"Poor dear," she murmured, "You didn’t have to hold me that long."
"Now you tell me," he muttered in return, trying his best to stretch out the kinks in his back and neck as he drew his left arm out from underneath her. A new grimace and groan accompanied this gesture, and he began to flex and shake his arm in an apparent effort to try to get rid of the benumbed sensation in that limb resulting from being trapped underneath Helena’s body for a considerable period of time.
During her sleep, the towel in which she had been wrapped had fallen away and she shivered as she struggled to cover herself with it again. She looked down at the floor and saw that the pile of her robes and clothes had fallen off of the end of the bed. She sighed and stood up to retrieve them.
"I suppose I should be going," she said softly. She dropped the towel away from her body and another large shiver shook her entire frame.
She heard Snape sigh in exasperation.
"Oh, for Merlin’s sake, just get under the covers and go back to sleep," he said, irritably.
She giggled quietly. "Well, if that isn’t the nicest invitation I’ve received from a gentleman offering to share his bed with me."
"It’s the nicest one you’re going to get in this room tonight," he replied, suppressing another groan as he arose to his feet and began to remove his own clothing.
She slid between the sheets and drew the covers up to her neck as she watched him take off his clothes. She was slightly disappointed to note that he still had on his silk underwear as he turned to get into the bed.
She propped her head up on her elbow and gazed down at him as he lay on his back and closed his eyes.
"Sure you don’t need anything massaged?" she whispered, her voice full of innuendo.
"Go to sleep!" he ordered, turning over on his right side and facing away from her.
"Okay," she whispered, snuggling close beside him and spooning her body against his.
"Your feet are cold," he murmured.
"That’s why I’m warming them up against you," she replied. "Good night."
She waited, but there was no reply. She snuggled closer, moving slightly downward so that her head was at the level of his shoulder blades. In only a few minutes the combination of the heavy blankets and the heat of the body next to her had combined to make her feel quite warm and toasty, and she drifted off to sleep.
The man beside her stayed awake for a very long time, however. As he felt her body relax and her breathing settle into a deep, even rhythm, his black eyes had flown open. And he lay there a long time, a worried frown wrinkling his forehead, and his lips pursed into a deep scowl.
****************
When she awoke the next morning, he was already gone. She sighed and turned on her back for a moment, trying to remember bits and pieces of the strange and confusing dreams she had had all night long. Then she tossed the covers aside and arched her back seductively.
"Severus, come back to bed," she called.
There was no response, and she strained her ears, trying to hear if there were any faint noises coming from the bathroom or the sitting room.
"Severus?" she called. Not a sound in reply. Sighing again, she rose out of the bed and padded over to the closet door. She got his robe from its hanger and threw it over her shoulders. Tying the belt around her, she walked into the sitting room.
There was a small, dying fire flickering in the fireplace, but no sign of Snape. Although there was a pot of tea and some cups sitting on top of one of the end tables, and her clothes were now piled on one end of the leather sofa. She strode over to the table and poured out a cup for herself before settling down on the other side of the couch. She took one sip and grimaced. It was bitterly strong and cold to boot. He was have been gone for awhile already, she thought.
She put the cup down for a moment and moved her hand to retrieve her wand from the pile of clothes. A few moments later, she had refreshed the tea in her cup and also urged the dying embers of the fire back into a hearty blaze.
By the time she had finished her second cup of tea, she was beginning to get seriously worried. He had seemed rather irritated with her last night, but she had thought it was merely because he was tired and cranky. She was starting to think he was truly upset with her. Was he purposefully staying away until she had dressed and left for her own room?
She put the cup down and got to her feet and stretched, starting to feel rather irritated herself. She had apologized, after all. And she did have other things she could be doing rather than hanging around in his rooms, of course. Like finishing her homework and studying for her NEWTS. She shrugged and undid the tie of the robe and reached over to retrieve her clothing.
A few minutes later she was fully dressed. She stood still for a moment, wondering if she felt up to an animagus transfiguration this morning. Snape had finally broken down and allowed her access to and from his rooms by giving her all of the wards, so she could make her way out of the office door and go through the hallways. However, that meant she would have to be very careful not to be seen by any of the students. So, perhaps she should leave via her own wing power instead.
She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath, grounding herself so that she could manage the transfiguration. But a moment later her eyes had flown open and a most evil grin had appeared on her face.
"On the other hand," she said aloud, "I could take this opportunity of being alone in your rooms to do some serious snooping."
A few moments later she was back in the bedroom, her hand tentatively reaching out to pull open the top middle drawer of the long bureau. She half-expected it to be firmly locked, or for some kind of booby-trap to spring out at her, but the drawer slid open easily, and she was disappointed to see that it held nothing more than a large collection of socks. All of them black, of course.
She went on to the other drawers. Most of them held other articles of clothing, all carefully arranged and folded, and she was doubly careful to make sure that she had everything back exactly the way it was before she closed them up again.
One of the drawers in the next row held a bit of a surprise for her, however. Inside this drawer was the box of drawing and painting supplies he had bought her months ago. Along with, "Wanton Wizards and Witches." She laughed out loud. She had wondered what he had done with them ever since their argument months ago. Other than a brief reappearance when she had returned to his rooms after ingesting his ‘Reconciliation Potion’, she hadn’t seen the book since. And, she had been too proud to ask him what he had done with it and the drawing supplies after she had initially refused to take them with her.
She knelt down for a moment, and carefully removed both the box and the book from the drawer, placing them on the floor beside her. He actually had given them to her, after all, so it wasn’t really stealing for her to take them back, she rationalized to herself.
She went to open the next drawer, and frowned as it stubbornly refused to budge a fraction of an inch. With an exasperated sigh, she tried to re-open the drawers she had already gone through. They again slid open easily.
She regarded the whole piece of furniture thoughtfully for a moment, and then shrugged her shoulders and tried replacing the box and the book back into its proper place. Perhaps certain wards were activated by the removal of certain items. She then returned to the drawer that had been locked. It still refused to open.
She went on to the other drawers in the bureau. Most of them slid open easily, but two others were firmly locked. And the ones that she was granted access to were monotonously boring. Using her wand, she halfheartedly tried a handful of spells to undo the wards, and was not at all surprised when none of them worked. She laughed again, and once more took the drawing supplies and the book out of their drawer. She should have known better than to believe that Severus would be trusting or stupid enough to allow her access to things he didn’t care for her to see. Which, of course, made her even more curious as to exactly what those things were
She sat down for a minute on the bed and quickly looked through the book again. With a smirk, she tore one of the sheets of watercolor paper into three pieces and inserted them as bookmarks in order to mark the sexual positions she was particularly eager to try. With another murmured spell, the disheveled bed put itself back in order, and she left the book sitting in the middle of the smoothed coverlet.
She walked back out to the sitting room, intending to use a shrinking spell to fit the box into her robe pocket so that she could take it with her. Just as she was waving the wand over it, however, she seemed to have second thoughts.
It was almost an hour later when Snape stepped back through the flames into his room. And he found Helena kneeling on the floor, her head bent intently over a sheet of paper as she used his low coffee table as a desk.
"Oh!’ she exclaimed, as she finally heard his footsteps and raised up her head. "You’re back."
"Obviously," he replied, drawing near her.
With a quick movement of her hand, she moved the paper she was working on to the bottom of the pile and rose to her feet.
"Am I forgiven, or did you run out of places to sulk in?" she asked, reaching up on her toes to give him a kiss on the cheek.
"Forgiven?" he asked, curiously.
"Well, I assumed you were avoiding my company because you were still angry with me," she said. She was beginning to become even more puzzled. He hadn’t drawn away from her embrace, but neither had he made any attempt to return it. She smiled up at him invitingly, "I really am sorry, Severus."
"Oh, no, I’m not angry," he said, shaking his head and moving past her to sit down on the couch. "I woke up early and wasn’t able to sleep. I didn’t want to disturb you, so I went out for a walk." He paused and took out his own wand and waved it at the teapot and dishes, making them disappear.
Helena stood looking down at him, her arms upon her hips and her expression still puzzled. She was used to seeing him angry or annoyed. Instead, he seemed…..remote and guarded.
"Must have been a long walk," she teased. "Back to Hogsmeade and back?" she added, sitting down beside him.
"Well, I’ve been in Albus’ office for the last hour or so," he said, staring down at the blank sheet of paper on the table.
Her eyes followed his gaze. "Oh, yes, I happened to run across that box of supplies. I hope you don’t mind?" she asked.
"Happened to run across it?" he repeated, with both eyebrows raised.
Helena chuckled and sat down beside him, relieved to see a bit of his old spirit back. "Yes, it really was quite nice of you to leave at least a few of the drawers open for me," she said. She leaned closer to him and brushed her finger against his cheek. "Though, you know, I’m now even more curious than ever about what you are keeping locked away."
"Hmm," he replied. "Well, I do suggest you don’t try too hard to get beyond those wards. For your own safety."
She stared back at him for a moment, wondering just how serious he was. The next thing she knew, he had suddenly reached down and retrieved the stack of paper off of the table, turning it over to see the drawing she had hidden on the bottom.
"Oh, don’t, it’s really bad," she protested, trying to take it back from him.
He stared down at the drawing. Numerous gaunt, ghostly figures were depicted, each wearing a white mask through which only their deadly, inhumanely cold eyes could be discerned. At the center top of the page, Voldemort’s red eyes gleamed fiercely, his gaze mesmerizing and chilling. And in the center of the drawing, only the vague outline of the figures drawn in so far, were two pale bodies twisted around each other.
Snape continued to look at the drawing for several minutes before finally allowing Helena to take it out of his hands. "Exorcising some demons?" he asked quietly, as she again placed it on the bottom of the stack.
She shrugged and laughed. "Can’t draw pornography all the time, can I?" she teased.
But Snape’s face remained still and thoughtful.
Helena felt a strange, vague sense of dread begin to creep over her. "Has something bad happened?" she asked.
"Why do you ask?" he said, moving to sit further back in the sofa.
"I don’t know, you just seem…." She paused, uncertain what she really meant to say. "I mean, was there a specific reason you were in the Headmaster’s office?"
"Yes."
She waited for him to continue, but he again refused to look at her. This time, his eyes were trained on the flames of the fire.
"Well," she said, bending down to begin gathering up her art supplies and placing them back in the box. "If it’s something secret that you can’t discuss, I understand," she said, just a hint of pique in her voice.
"Actually, we were discussing you," he replied.
Her movements immediately stilled. "Really?" she said.
"Yes." His eyes moved abruptly back to her face. "I asked him if you could be sent away."
