Chapter 34: Unity of Spirit
Naiya
stared at the lifeless body of the girl who might have been her life-mate. She knew that the possibility had hardly had
a chance, but that didn’t stop her from being very protective of Eris. How was this supposed to change anything in
the course of the battle? Harry was a
wreck, sobbing over Eris’ body and refusing to let it go. Draco and Sirius weren’t any better. Everyone else was no less shaken, but still
managing to function enough to fight and try to urge Harry to his feet.
That was
when her father stepped forward. Tahdei rushed over to Harry, pulled the boy to his feet and
shook him. He spoke loudly saying, “You
need to focus, Harry. You’re needed in
the field. Moral is just as important as
skill in a situation like this. If your
people start to panic or lose hope they will slip up.”
Naiya
bit her lip as her father shoved Harry into Draco’s arms and ordered him
away. Remus and Roslyn pulled Sirius
away and soon the small space was cleared.
Tahdei was kneeling by Eris’ body, laying it
out in a very specific way.
“What are you doing,” Naiya
asked, rushing to kneel opposite her father.
“You can’t perform the ritual.
She’s too powerful and it won’t do any good. If you did bring her back she’d be too weak
to fight!”
Tahdei
leveled a stern gaze on her. “Naiya, my child, I knew the moment I first saw Eris that
she was the reason I have so long outlived your mother. We have no time to argue over this. We have only a few minutes before her body
isn’t fit to be revived. I will see her
fully restored, giving her all that I have.”
“Papa…no,” Naiya
said weakly. “Please…”
Her
father reached out and caressed her cheek.
“You will have Eris and her little ones to be with. She’s going to need you. Now, I need your help with the ritual.”
Naiya
nodded, tears streaming down her face.
_______________________________________________________________________
Harry couldn’t make his mind stop
repeating the sight of Eris’ lifeless face.
Draco was dragging him along towards the rest of the Order with Sirius
and Remus covering their rear. Someone
grabbed his arm and he turn to see Severus now rushing along beside him.
“Where’s Ginny,” he asked.
“Eris used her as a surrogate for her
children,” Severus said briskly. “She’s
remaining in the Chamber of Secrets to keep all three of them safe. Harry…is she…”
“She’s gone, Sev.” Harry could tell that Severus already knew
this. “She made an Unbreakable Vow and…”
Severus’ eyes closed briefly as he
spoke, “She broke it. That’s not what we
need to focus on at the moment, Harry.
Right now we have a dark wizard to kill.
You need all your wits about you.”
Harry nodded and turned forward
only to see that their small group was being charged by a giant. He pulled Draco into his arms and aimed his
wand, shouting, “Take it down! Stunners now!”
They all
fired on the rampaging creature, but giants are notoriously immune to
magic. There wasn’t enough time to get
out of its way. It swung a massive club
at them, sending all five of them flying in separate directions. As Harry crashed to the ground he noticed a
golden light fill the air right before he blacked out.
______________________________________________________________________
Eris slowly stood up from the ground.
She felt a bit shaky as she looked around, assessing her surroundings. She recognized the hazy gray of the mist that
surrounded her. She was on the astral
plane.
“Hello, sweetheart,” someone
said from behind her.
Eris spun about to see her
mother and father smiling at her sadly, their arms outstretched. With less hesitation than she ever would have
thought she’d express, Eris launched herself into their arms and began sobbing
against her father’s chest. “Please
forgive me,” she begged. “I’m so sorry,
for everything. I’m sorry for being
angry with you, for betraying Harry, for…”
“That’s enough, Eris,” James
said gently. “We don’t have very much
time so we need to make this quick.
Regulus, come out here.”
Regulus walked out from the mist and said softly, “You know there are
easier ways to pull a prank on people.
Did you have to go play Death Eater?”
“Don’t tease her,” Lily said
sternly. “Eris, love, you’re going to be
summoned back soon. Do you understand?”
Eris nodded her head numbly. “Who…how? Harry
doesn’t know how and he can’t afford to waste the power.”
“Its Tahdei,”
Regulus said. “He’s performing the
ritual and gifting you with all of his power.
He’s ready to come home to his wife.”
“No,” Eris said fiercely. “He can’t die for me!”
James gave her shoulder a squeeze.
“And was it fair to make Harry watch you die for him? We can’t pick these things. Harry was right, Eris, he needs you in order
to defeat Voldemort. He may have the
power, but you inspire his control. It
is as a team that you are at your best.”
“Besides,” Lily said with a
smile, “you need to be there for my grand-babies.”
Eris glanced over at Regulus and said, “I’m naming my son after you.”
Regulus smiled. He stepped over
to her and pulled her into a hug, whispering in her ear, “You just make sure
that his father gets enough of him.”
James chuckled. “And don’t let Snape turn my granddaughter into such a
little swot that she doesn’t know how to have any
fun.”
Eris suddenly felt tears welling up in her eyes. “Will I ever see any of you again?”
The three spirits shared a look and Eris knew that there was something
they were keeping from her. Lily reached
out and took her hand. “Just remember to
stay strong. This thing is far from
over.”
“Be careful what choices you
make in the future,” James said gently.
“We don’t want to have you with us too soon.”
Regulus looked serious then.
“When you are revived you must immediately take action. Harry is already in desperate need of your
help. Your death sent half the Order
into a tail spin. Harry needs to see you
alive and at his side to help him find the strength to get through this. You need to keep your head clear and act
fast. Don’t worry about the Death Eaters
other than getting past them. Get right
to Voldemort and take care of him. The
Death Eaters will scatter and surrender quickly without him.”
Eris nodded and said, “I understand.”
Her father was looking at her strangely.
He stepped closer to her and said firmly, “Eris, promise me, no matter
what you see…no matter what happens…you’ll keeping moving until you and Harry
have succeeded.”
“James,” Lily cried out. “You can’t…”
“I know,” James said harshly and
looked back at Eris. “Promise me,
sweetheart. You’ll do what you need to
do, no matter what.”
Eris swallowed hard. “I promise,
daddy.”
Suddenly, the mist began to clear.
Regulus rushed up to hug her.
“They’re calling you back. You
only have a moment now.”
Her mother and father followed suit and then all three stepped back from
her. She felt herself being pulled away
as a golden light surrounded her.
“I love you,” she called out
before darkness fell over her.
_______________________________________________________________________
The first
thing Eris was aware of was the sound of someone crying softly beside her. She felt incredibly lucid and in tune with
her body. Sitting up slowly so as not to
startle anyone, she opened her eyes and was greeted by an image straight out of
the legends of hell. The number of
bodies on the ground seemed impossible and she had to forcibly remind herself
that they weren’t all dead. Most were
probably just wounded and maybe stunned.
She looked to her right and felt her stomach clenched. Naiya was kneeling
on the ground clutching at a lifeless Tahdei.
“Naiya,” she said
quietly.
The elf
looked up at her. She said, “You have a
job to do, little sister. Come, we need
to find your brother.”
Eris nodded and leapt to her feet
and together with Naiya she began to search. She ran forward in the direction of the
thickest fighting, scanning the carnage for any sign of Harry. She kept her wand gripped tightly in her hand
as she called out for her brother.
Several people ceased fighting to
stare at her in disbelief and amazement.
Eris just continued to push her way through the throng, stunning any
Death Eater she caught off guard and doing worse to those who tried to stop
her. She had no time for them. There was a lone giant slumped on the ground,
looking as though he’d taken quite the beating.
Moving on a gut instinct she ran to the creature and searched around his
body. Before long she found Draco only a
few feet from the giant. He was
unconscious.
“Draco,” she said forcefully, slapping him
lightly on the cheek.
The blond’s eyes opened slowly at first, but when he focused in
on her they shot wide. “Am I dead,” he
asked.
“Not yet,” Eris said grimly, “but you will be
if you stay here. Come on. I need you to help me find Harry.”
She
helped Draco to his feet and they started moving again. That was when she heard Severus’ voice
calling out to her.
“Eris,” the wizard yelled and she turned to
see him in the midst of a duel with Lucius Malfoy.
She moved
to run to him, but Draco stopped her.
“We need to find Harry. He’s the
only one who can end this madness. He’ll
be fine just knowing you’re alive. Sev can take care of himself.”
As those
words left Draco’s mouth, Eris saw another Death Eater apparate
behind Severus and hit him with a Slashing Hex.
The force of the spell seemed to stun him, and in that moment Lucius had
the opportunity to fire off a spell at Severus without him having the ability
to dodge it.
Everything
seemed to slip into slow motion. She
flung out her free hand towards Lucius and reached out with her power to Harry,
praying for the strength to summon the fire that she once had before. Something went wrong though, and as a
strange, blue-green light flew out of Lucius’ wand, Eris realized that there
were rocks about to rain down on him from the sky…but too late. A giant ran past then and time resumed its
true speed. When she had a clear view
again, all Eris could see was a pile of boulders where Lucius stood only a
moment before and Severus lying motionless on the ground.
She tried
to run to him again, but Naiya stopped her, saying,
“You find Harry. I’ll take care of your
mentor.”
Eris nodded reluctantly and
hurried off with Draco, trying to keep her father’s warning at the forefront of
her mind. Suddenly there was screaming
up ahead of them and bodies began to fly in every direction. She felt a burst of fury from Harry and
didn’t need to guess who was causing this “explosion”.
“Draco, get behind me,” Eris said calmly.
________________________________________________________________________
Harry was lost within his own mind
as he rose up from the ground. He was
aware of all the screaming and casting going on around him, but it was like
listening to the sounds from beneath water.
He stumbled forward, trying to get his bearings and locate Sirius or
Draco. Looking around he couldn’t
believe the destruction that had occurred while he was knocked out. He didn’t think it could have been for that
long. Someone would have taken him if it
had been, either to Voldemort or an Order member.
A particularly shrill scream
caught his attention and he spun about quickly, knocking himself to the ground
in his dizzy state. It was Jackie. She had been hit by something nasty from the
looks of things and Zack was trying his damnedest to protect her against at
least three Death Eaters. Harry could
see that his sister’s friend was going down fast and tried to push himself to
his feet, but his strength was seemed to be waning. He could only let out a strangled cry of
protest as the Death Eaters struck first Zack down and then Jackie, both dead
by the Killing Curse.
He struggled to his knees then and
caught sight of Argus Filch take a blow from a giant to protect what looked
like a huddled group of first years.
When the aged caretaker hit the ground Harry could see that his skull
had been crushed. The cries of the
frightened students finally gave Harry the strength to get to his feet, but his
head was still muddled. He staggered his
way towards them, feeling a burst of pride for the way the children were
fighting so hard to protect each other.
It was
the next thing he saw that finally helped him to clear his spinning thoughts,
or more precisely, sent him into a strange, lucid rage. Hagrid charged
towards the group of students that Harry was heading for. There were all ready five Death Eaters behind
the half-giant, but he didn’t seem to care.
He fired of hexes and curses from his pink umbrella that Harry hadn’t
thought anyone could cast with a broken wand.
He managed to give the children time to get away, but that left him
facing nearly twenty Death Eaters on his own.
In the end, it took four simultaneous Slashing Hexes to take him down.
Harry didn’t have time to think
about whether or not Hagrid could have survived what
had been done to him. He went into a
blind rage and immediately felt his body begin to shift. If they wanted to see what invulnerability
was, he’d show them.
When his
shift was finished, he was in his earth elemental form. He charged the Death Eaters, fling his arms
out at them and relishing the sound of their bones snapping with the
contact. They frantically cast
everything they had to bring him down, but everything just bounced off of
him. Voldemort could be damned. He was going to crush every living thing in
sight and the army of light would just have to get out of his way.
_______________________________________________________________________
“We’ll never reach him with all this shit in
the way,” Draco yelled. The sounds of
the violence around them was deafening now.
Eris knew what they were
thinking. They thought Harry had gone
insane and she had to admit that he certainly looked it. She didn’t dare reach out with her mind for
fear that he would doubt his own sanity.
She turned to Draco and said, “Then I’ll just have to clear a path for
us.”
She flung
out both her hands and threw herself into summoning all the air around her to
do her bidding. She didn’t care what Naiya had tried to teach her. She needed everyone out of her way.
When the force had built up to the proper point she released it. Draco clung to her as the air rushed past
them both.
“Come on,” Eris said, grabbing Draco’s hand
and racing along in the path of the air burst.
Everyone who met it head on was tossed to the left and the right, but
when it reached Harry he didn’t even seem to notice. Eris and Draco immediately jumped in to
helping him sort out the surrounding Death Eaters. Eris finally took the risk of grabbing on to
one of her brother’s currently massive arms and shouted, “Harry we don’t have
time for this! We need to get to that
bastard.”
Harry instantly shifted back into
his regular form. His voice trembled as
he spoke, “Merlin, I’ve gone insane.”
Eris grabbed him and shook him
gently. “No, Harry, Tahdei
brought me back. You didn’t think I’d
let you have all the fun for yourself did you?”
Harry gave her a weak smile. “That was one hell of a bluff.”
Eris swallowed hard. “You have no idea. Now let’s move.”
________________________________________________________________________
Harry could hardly believe that
Eris was beside him but he wasn’t going to question it. It fate wanted to be kind to him this once
he’d accept it. They had an easy time
finding Voldemort after that, the problem was going to be getting through to
him. Every giant that was still standing
was blocking the way to him.
“We’re going to need some major fire power to
get through to him,” Draco said.
It was
like a light bulb went off in Harry head and when he turned to Eris he knew she
was having the same idea. “Do you think
it will work,” he asked.
“They might have thick skin where magic is
concerned but they can still feel,” Eris said.
Neither
said anything else but immediately began summoning up fire. Working in concert, they were able to make
the fire rain out of the sky. The giants
ran for the Forbidden Forest,
abandoning Voldemort to make due with the few Death Eaters still at his side.
The
bastard screamed out at them, “Tell me, Potter, did you lower yourself to
making an Inferi out of your sister? Come face me and bring the traitorous bitch
along.”
Harry turned to Eris. “Stay here.
Draco you cover her back so she can focus on supporting me. I’ll throw up a barrier around the two of us
as soon as we start the duel. No one
will be able to interrupt.”
He pulled Eris into a hug and she
whispered in his ear, “Be careful, Harry.”
He smiled at her. “He doesn’t have a chance while I have you.”
Harry turned and raced towards Voldemort, Eris
and Draco’s spells whizzed past him, taking down every Death Eater in his
way. When the coast was clear, he threw
up the barrier.
“I see you’re prepared to die, Potter,”
Voldemort said smugly. “Do you really
think you have the power to strike me down?
I’ll only rise again.”
Harry smirked, leveling his wand
on the wizard who had torn into his life so many times. “Oh I think not. You see, we’ve destroyed all you pathetic Horcruxes. You’ll be
gone for good this time.”
“Cocky brat,” Voldemort sneered. “You have to actually manage to kill me
first.”
Harry simply continued to
smile. He could see the glimmer of fear
in Voldemort’s eyes now. They circled each other, wands at the
ready. Harry kept his mind firmly
occluded. He wasn’t going to give anything
away this time.
It was
the slightest twitch of Voldemort’s wrist that gave
him away. Harry quickly cast a Shielding
Charm and dove out of the way, sending his own Stunning Spell as he fell to the
ground. Scrambling to his feet, Harry
realized one thing: Eris was too far away from him. He needed her working in concert with him the
way they had practiced.
______________________________________________________________________
Eris was pouring everything she
had into keeping Harry steady, but as the duel began to drag on she realized
that it wasn’t good enough. Harry almost
seemed to be holding back. It was as
thought he didn’t truly have a grip on his confidence.
She turned and looked at Draco,
who was keeping a look out, and realized that Harry’s duel was starting to
collect a lot of attention. She also
noticed Sirius struggling to reach her.
She grabbed Draco’s arm. “I have
to go to Harry. He needs me right there
with him.”
Draco shook his head. “No!
If anything happens to you again Harry will completely shut down.”
“I have to,” Eris said firmly. “We both need to work together to get rid of
Voldemort.”
Sirius reached them then and
pulled her into a tight embrace.
“Hermione said she spotted you and I just didn’t believe her, but Naiya came and said that…”
“Naiya,” Eris cut in
sharply. “Why wasn’t she with Severus?”
Sirius’ face froze. “Eris…she said that...Merlin I’m sorry love,
but she said he didn’t make it. Whatever
Malfoy hit him with completely shut down his system. Naiya said he was
gone before she even made it to him.”
Eris felt her heart grow
cold. She’d been so busy struggling
through to Harry that she hadn’t even felt Severus go. Her mind had been chaos.
She
grabbed Sirius around the neck and pulled him into a deep kiss. “I’m sorry that I hurt you, but I have to go
to Harry now.”
Sirius closed his eyes and nodded
slowly.
“This is insane,” Draco said harshly. “You can’t even get through the barrier!”
Eris smiled at her old friend and
swiftly shifted into her Aeolian Sprite animagus
form. She laughed at their shocked
expressions and said, “Didn’t think of that did you? Take care of each other.”
With that
she glided up to the barrier and straight through it. Shifting back, she took a hold of Harry’s
waiting hand. He’d been expecting
her. “Let’s kill this bastard.”
_______________________________________________________________________
Harry took comfort in the feel of
Eris’ hand in his. He summoned up his
control over the elements of earth and fire, melding them together to create a
lava flow. He could feel Eris wielding
air and water, guiding the flow in a spiral around Voldemort who was helpless
to fend it off. These two separate
things, the wizard and the flow, stood there for an endless moment in a strange
dance. He felt the exact moment that
Eris chose to launch the lava at Voldemort.
Her mind seized in a perfect moment of contentment as the fluid rock
suddenly covered him. The screaming was
horrible, a piercing cry that Harry would never forget, but he couldn’t help
but feel a twinge of satisfaction.
He could sense that the entire
battle had halted around them. Ignoring
the onlookers, Harry just kept feeding power to Eris allowing her to keep the
lava layering and hardening until it was a magnificent obsidian spiral
stretching toward the sky.
Instinct took over then. He felt something within himself connect to
Eris and reach out. Their combined power
abolished Voldemort’s soul, erasing it
completely. He suddenly felt very
drained and barely heard the sounds of frantic Death Eaters apparating
away from their fallen master. It didn’t
matter, they would catch them eventually.
At the moment all he cared about was falling into darkness and rest.
He felt Eris lowering him gently
to the ground, her lips brushing his forehead, and heard her softly spoken
words, “I’ll always love you, brother.”
And then he let himself drift
away, wondering if it would all be a dream when he woke.
________________________________________________________________________
Eris wasted no time getting back
into the school and the second floor girls’ bathroom. She needed to get to Ginny and leave,
quickly. She needed to get away, to
collect her thoughts…to assess how to go on without Severus in her life.
She was about to go down the chute
when someone stopped her. She turned to
see Naiya and Greg.
Greg was smiling sadly. “I know
what happened. Naiya
told me. Let us go down with you.”
Eris nodded curtly and dove down
the chute. As soon as she hit the bottom
she ran for Ginny. The petite redhead
flung herself into her arms, crying out, “Thank Merlin you’re alright. Severus wouldn’t tell me what was happening,
he just ran off.”
Eris winced at the mention of her
mentor. “Ginny, Severus is gone.”
Tears welled up in the younger
witch’s eyes. “I’m so sorry. I know how much you loved him.”
Eris shook her head and said,
“Don’t worry about that now. I need to
transfer the children back to me.”
It was a
quick and flawless process. When they
were finished, Naiya and Greg began to relay
information about the carnage they had witnessed.
“From what I overheard there were heavy
casualties on both sides,” Greg said softly.
“I’m sorry to tell you this, Eris, but we lost both Jackie and Zack.”
Eris closed her eyes and took a
deep breath. “Who
else?”
“Hagrid perished
defending several of the children as did Mr. Filch,” Naiya
said quietly. “They were outstanding
acts of bravery.”
Eris sighed. “And what good does that do anyone if they
died? This is why I need to leave. Not permanently,” Eris said hastily when
Ginny began to protest. “I just need to
rediscover my peace. These babies need
me thinking clearly.”
Ginny had tears streaming down her
face. “Please don’t leave. We all need you too! You can’t go off alone.”
“She won’t be alone,” Greg said firmly. “I’m going with you, Eris, whether you like
it or not.”
“That goes for me as well,” Naiya said. “You’ll
need assistance and protection if you stay away through the end of your
pregnancy, especially once the power leeching begins.”
Ginny looked furious then. “And doesn’t Sirius deserve to be allowed to
be with Eris through this, to be there when his kid is born?”
Eris gave Ginny a pointed
look. “I love Sirius, Ginny, but he owes
me whatever I ask of him as far as I’m concerned. I love you all, but I’ll return when I’m damn
good and ready.”
The
youngest Weasley hung her head. “Just
try not to make it too long.”
Eris pulled the girl into a firm
hug. “We’ll be together again soon.”
As she
held her, Eris realized that Ginny’s aura was maturing into the same deep blue
Severus’ had been. She pulled back and
said to her, “You’ll be a wonderful mentor for Harry, Gin. I know you’ll take your job very seriously.”
The girl
nodded. Eris left quickly with her two
companions after that. They needed to be
gone before Harry was lucid enough to come into the Chamber. She turned and looked at Naiya
as they hurried along. “Any ideas on
where we should go?”
Naiya smiled. “I have the perfect place for us, at least
for until the children are born. That’s
probably all the time we’ll have before the others track us down.”
Greg piped up then. “This is going to be for a lot longer than
you let on…isn’t it?”
Eris gave him a serious look. “Yes, Greg, it is. If you’re not prepared for this I won’t blame
you for staying behind.”
Greg shook his head. “My place is with you for now.”
Eris smiled. “Then let’s all get out of her.”
_______________________________________________________________________
Harry had only been awake for a
few minutes but he already knew that something had gone seriously wrong. He frowned and looked at Sirius. “Where is Eris?”
His godfather closed his eyes and
took a deep breath. “The entrance to the
Chamber of Secrets was open. We went
down and retrieved Ginny. She told
us…she told us that Eris has run away. Naiya and Greg are with her, but it doesn’t sound like
they’re going to try and bring her back any time soon.”
Harry swallowed hard. “There’s something else.”
Sirius nodded. “It’s about Severus. Damn it, Harry, he’s not really dead! From what Ginny says, that’s almost the whole
reason that Eris took off. The worst
part is that Severus needs her!”
“What do you mean,” Harry asked.
“Malfoy cast some sort of degenerate curse on
Severus,” Sirius said. “He’s in a state
of sleeping death. There are barely any
signs to give it away. It’s a lucky
thing he didn’t get written off. We need
Eris here because she’s the only one with enough talent in potions to possibly
come up with something to bring him out of it.”
“Damn,” Harry spat. “Just one misunderstanding after another.”<br.
“There’s another thing, Harry,” Sirius said
darkly. “Lucius Malfoy was not under
that pile of rocks when we cleared them away.
We think he escaped with Bellatrix and the Lestrange
brothers. They’re the only ones that we
couldn’t track down from apparition trails.”
Harry growled. “That probably means that the cowards took
off long before the battle ended. So much for Bellatrix being so damn loyal.”
“A Death Eater always saves their
own skin in the end,” Sirius said firmly.
“And now Eris is out there somewhere,” Harry
said softly, “and Lucius Malfoy is going to start hunting her down as soon as
he’s able.”
Sirius grabbed his hand. “We’ll find her first, Harry. I swear that we will.”
Harry looked out the Hospital Wing
window. Wherever Eris was going, he
hoped that she would find her peace soon and return to them. It seemed that they all needed each other now
as much as ever.
