Chapter 37 Another Proposal
Sky finished and packed away her things. She had time to take a quick bath and put on a change of clothes before the bell went to signal the end of classes. When Severus entered the study he notice how fresh she looked, the change of clothes, he also noticed she had a very Albus-esque twinkle in her eyes when she looked at him.
“What?” He asked her suspiciously his eyes narrowed almost to slits.
“I didn’t say anything yet, hello to you too.”
“You are acting guilty. You look guilty. What have you done?”
“I’m not. I haven’t.”
“Hmm. We shall see.”
He gave her a look that said he did not believe a word of it and headed into the bedroom. He wanted to take a shower and change his clothes.
Two of the idiot students melted their cauldrons today and another had exploded, covering the whole class in giggling potion. Fortunately, he had taken the antidote as soon as they began brewing, just in case. It would not do for the miserable Potions Master to be heard giggling like a schoolgirl along with the rest of them.
While Severus was in the shower, Sky checked for the fifth time that her desk drawer was locked and warded. She was busy giving it a good tug when he walked back in.
“Do you need some help with that?” He enquired, fastening the top two buttons of his frock coat.
She jumped. “No. It’s fine thanks.”
“It does not look fine. Here, let me try.” He removed his wand, ready to unstick the drawer for her.
“No, leave it. I was just checking it. It doesn’t need to be opened.” She turned to face him, her face red, leaning against the desk and hiding the drawer.
“Now I know you are up to something.” He pulled her away from the desk and looked at the offending drawer. “Alohamora.” He tugged the drawer and received a small shock.
Several spells later, he was still getting shocks each time he tried to open it as Sky stood watching, gnawing at her lip and rubbing her stone nervously.
“What have you done, forgotten the wards you used, or are you hiding something?”
“It’s nothing Severus. You’re imagining things.” She said guiltily. Lying was not something that came easily to her, especially lying to Severus.
“I know you are lying to me Sky and I do not like it. There should be no secrets between us.” He was starting to get riled.
“It’s not a secret, well not really. Well it is but it’s a surprise and your spoiling it.”
“What kind of a surprise?” He looked into her eyes and she turned away before he could raise his wand.
“That’s not fair. Anyway, if I told you it wouldn’t be a surprise any more. And don’t you try looking in my head when I’m not expecting it.”
“Very well.” He tucked his wand back in his sleeve. “I shall let you have your little secret, for now. I have to see Albus and then I have some marking to do. Poppy has given me a small list of potions needed for the infirmary. Do you wish to make them while I am busy?”
“Oh yes please.” At last she had something useful to do. “I’ll get on with them now.”
Severus passed her the list, shaking his head as he left the study to meet with the Headmaster. Sky rushed into her lab, excited at the prospect of doing something useful for once. She hated trying to just fill her time when she could be doing something like this. She grabbed an overall to protect her clothes and set to work. After leaving the Skele-Gro to cool she started on the acne lotion, potted it, then began the burn salve and a batch of healing potion. A couple of hours later, she entered the study with her arms full of boxes. Severus looked up just as he finished his essays.
“Merlin’s beard, how much did you make?”
“What was on the list. It didn’t say how much of each. Is it too much?”
“Sky, there are only four days left before the students leave for the summer. Most of that will not be needed and will be out of date by the time school starts again.”
“No it won’t. It’s okay for at least a year, maybe eighteen months with the Skele-Gro.”
He lifted an eyebrow. “Your own brew?”
She nodded.
“Have you labelled everything? Dated them?”
“Yes. Where do you want them?”
“I don’t. You can take them to the infirmary. Poppy is in need of the Skele-Gro as soon as possible. She has a broken arm to attend.”
Sky set the boxes to follow her so she could open the door and navigate the stairs. She’d never been to the infirmary and it had been a while since she’d walked through the castle, other then to the Great Hall and Albus’ office.
She was just approaching the main staircase when a voice from behind made her turn. A tall man with light brown hair and a friendly face was walking up to her.
“Can I help you with those?”
“Oh Professor erm …I can manage thanks.”
“McKinley. But call me Will.”
“You’re the defence teacher aren’t you?”
“I am. We’ve not spoken before. I’m pleased to meet you, Mrs. Snape.” He held out a hand to her and she took it.
“Hello, if I’m to call you Will, you have to call me Sky. I have to take these to the infirmary, they’re needed apparently. It was nice meeting you.”
“Hey, not so fast, I’m going in the same direction as you so we may as well walk together. It’s not often I get a chance to talk to someone under the age of seventy. So you’re delivering potions for your husband?” He asked as they climbed the steps.
“Yeah, he’s busy so he asked me to make them.”
“Oh so you’re a Potions Mistress?”
“No, but I can brew as well as anyone. I’m sorry that sounded big headed.”
“Not at all. What else can you do?”
“Charms, Defence, Transfiguration, Dark Arts. Everything they teach here really. Why?”
“Just interested. Incidentally, Hogwarts does not teach the Dark Arts.”
“No, I know they don’t, I didn’t mean to tell you that. Please don’t tell anyone.” Sky could’ve bitten her tongue. ‘If Severus finds out I’ve told, he’ll go mad.’ She thought.
“Very well. Does the Headmaster know?”
“Yes he does, but he didn’t teach me. I learned somewhere else.”
“Oh where? Was it Durmstrang?”
“Where? No. I can’t tell you. I have to go Professor.”
“Will. Call me Will. We’ll talk again Sky.”
He watched as she scuttled off along the corridor. ‘Pity I didn’t get a chance to meet her sooner, before Snape got his claws into her. So she has a dirty little secret that she doesn’t want anyone to know. Could be interesting.’ Professor Will McKinley whistled happily to himself as he headed back down the staircase. He’d been on his way to dinner when he saw her on her own. He’d been noticing her quite a lot lately. She was a stunner that’s for sure, very powerful too from what he’d witnessed. ‘Pity about her father, but she was hot, regardless of who her daddy was.’
Sky bustled into the infirmary, the potions following as she made her way between the rows of beds to where the nurse was busy attending to a patient.
“Madam Pomfrey, I’ve brought the things you asked for.”
“Mrs. Snape. Thank you dear. Just pop them on that table there. Did you bring the Skele-Gro? I’m all out.”
“Here.” Sky pulled a bottle from one of the boxes and passed it to her.
Poppy took the bottle and looked at it curiously. “This is not Severus’ usual Skele-Gro, it’s the wrong colour. What is that man playing at?” She muttered, walking over to the table and looking at the contents of the boxes. “In fact most of these are completely wrong. What has got into him?”
“Erm he didn’t make them, I did. They’re good though, it’s just that I’ve been taught different to Severus so my potions are a bit different.”
Her voice trailed off as she spoke. ‘She would have to take them back and ask Severus to make them all over again.’
“Is that so? Well I haven’t got time to wait for more. Let’s see if this potion of yours works. Why is it brown? Skele-Gro is usually clear.”
“Chocolate.”
“What?”
“Chocolate. Effy got me some so I put it in some of the potions to make them taste better. There’s banana flavour too, but don’t tell Severus. He doesn’t know I’ve had some chocolate. Says it’s bad for my teeth.”
Effy had brought her a banana but Sky thought they were horrible. The skin was too tough to bite through and was bitter tasting.
“Listen dear, if this works I don’t care what Severus thinks. And if it taste anything like chocolate or banana even better. Normally it tastes absolutely disgusting.”
Sky laughed. “I know. I’ve had it before.”
“Have you dear, when?”
“Oh not long after I came h …a while back.”
“Oh wow that’s nice.”
Both women looked at the boy in the bed. He’d just taken the dose of Skele-Gro from Madam Pomfrey. “Almost worth breaking my arm for is that.”
“Steven Barks that is not funny.” The nurse frowned at the boy, but he was grinning and licking his lips.
“You’re the Dark Lord’s daughter aren’t you? I heard about you. You can do magic with your hands and stuff.”
Madam Pomfrey rolled her eyes. “That’s enough Steven.”
“I’m sorry Mrs. Snape. I’m afraid you’ve made quite an impression on some of our students.”
“It’s alright. It least he’s not trying to run away from me or staring at me like I’ve grown an extra head.”
Sky moved over to the bed as Poppy went to put her supplies away.
“Hi Steven, you like my potion then?”
“Yeah. It’s much better then the usual stuff they give us. Are you really who they say you are?”
“‘Fraid so. Does it bother you?”
“Nah, me and my mates think you’re cool. I’m glad you got the Malfoy bloke arrested. My dad says he keeps getting away with things because he pays the Ministry. Oh and what you did in the main hall was awesome. You know, when you booed everybody.”
“Yeah well, I wasn’t supposed to do that.”
“Why did you then? I’m glad you did.”
“It was a dare.”
“Cool. Who dared you?”
“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
“Bet I would. Go on, tell me.”
“Professor Snape.”
“Go on. He never did.”
“Oh he did. He laughed as much as I did when he saw their faces, but don’t you dare let on. Okay?”
“I won’t. I like you, I hope you stay. I’m in second year when I come back and if you wait a few more years, I’m gonna marry you.”
“Steven, that’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me, but I’m already married to Professor Snape.”
“Yeah, but he’s old. He’ll probably be dead when I’m old enough to marry you so it won’t matter.”
“Steven that’s a terrible thing to say. Now you settle down and leave Mrs. Snape alone.” Poppy was furious with the boy.
“It’s alright Madam Pomfrey. He didn’t mean it badly I’m sure. At least I know I won’t be alone for the rest of my life if anything happens to Severus.” She laughed.
But Sky’s mind was whirling now. ‘Just how old was Severus? What if something happened with Voldemort and Severus was killed? What if’s were spinning through her mind as she headed back to the dungeons.
Severus noticed how distracted she was during dinner. When she left with the potions, he’d immediately started trying to open the drawer on her desk. Now his hand was damned sore. He’d needed two healing potions to take away the worst of the pain but it still ached. He wondered what happened up in the infirmary. And why the bloody hell did McKinley keep staring at them? Well at Sky anyway. Had he said something to upset his wife?’ He would curse him into next week if he had.
As soon as they entered the study after dinner he sat in his armchair and pulled her onto his lap.
“Did that blaggard say something to upset you?” He growled.
“What? No, he asked me to marry him.” She laughed.
“HE WHAT?” He roared, jumping to his feet.
Sky fell on the floor with a whump. “Ouch. What’s up? It’s not as if I said yes or anything. And he’s not a blaggard, he’s just a little boy.”
He spun round and looked at her as if she were mad. “What do you mean a little boy. He is the same age as me. And why the hell did he ask you to marry him? What did you do to make him say that?”
“Nothing. And he’s only eleven or twelve Severus and I don’t even know how old you are. You choked when I asked you. How old are you anyway because you’re not eleven?”
“Eleven? Sky who asked you to marry him?”
“Steven Barks, the boy with the broken arm. He liked my Skele-Gro better than yours, so he told me he was gonna marry me when he was old enough. It was really sweet. You don’t have to get mad about it.”
“Steven Barks. First year Hufflepuff Steven Barks?”
“Yes. He’s the one with the broken arm.”
“I know who he is. Let me get this straight. Will McKinley did not propose to you.”
“The Defence teacher? No, why would he?”
“Then what did he do? You have been distracted all through dinner and McKinley spent his time staring at you constantly. Why would he do that?”
“I don’t know why he was staring, I didn’t even know he was. And he didn’t say much at all.”
Severus’ eyes widened then narrowed. “So you did speak with him then? What about? What reason would you have to talk to him?”
“Nothing. No reason. He just offered to help me with the boxes. He said he was going the same way.”
This time he did catch her by surprise and shouted “Legilimens.” He would get to the bottom of this one way or another.
Sky was annoyed that he’d done this to her, but she didn’t block him. He wouldn’t let up until he knew what happened. It was only when he reached her goof about knowing Dark Arts that she regretted not blocking him. ‘Bugger. He’s gonna hit the roof.’
“Damned right I am. How could you be so foolish as to tell him that? Keep away from him in future. That is an order.”
“I didn’t mean to tell him. It just slipped out. He was being nice and wanted someone to talk to that’s all. Why do I have to keep away from him?”
“Because I do not trust him, and because I have told you not to.”
“You said you wouldn’t order me to do things any more.”
“I have not ordered you to do anything. I have ordered you not to do something. There is a difference.”
“That’s not fair, Severus. I don’t have anyone to talk to except you most of the time.”
“You have Albus and Minerva. You will be able to talk with Hooch on Thursday. Is that not enough for you?”
“I suppose so. I don’t have much choice. It’s lonely Severus when your all in classes and I’m on my own. You won’t let me come to class with you anymore and I get fed up.”
He looked at his beautiful wife. What she said was true. He knew it wasn’t easy for her on her own all day, but it could not be helped for the moment. His eyes softened a bit.
“It is only until the end of the week. Then we shall have the summer together. I shall ask Albus about finding some work for you when the new school term starts.”
“Really? That would be so good. I wonder what I’ll be doing? Did he tell you what the job is? Is it something I’ll have to learn or can I already do it? Maybe I’ll be helping you or one of the other Professors, Minerva or Professor Flitwick.”
“ As I have already told you. I will speak to him. I have no idea what the job is so there is no point in you questioning me incessantly. For now just …I don’t know, draw or something, pester Hagrid. He always has some new creature or other that he wants help with.”
“The giant man? You think he’ll let me help him? Should I go see him now or is tomorrow best?”
“SKY.”
She started and looked at him. “What?”
“Please shut up.” He told her more quietly. “You are giving me a headache.”
“Sorry.” She stood and made her way round the back of his chair. Placing her hands round his neck she unfastened the first few buttons of his coat and shirt, pulling his collar out of the way, and started to knead the back of his neck firmly. Severus let out a low moan as her fingers worked the tense muscles.
It was the first time Sky had ever done anything like this, but sometimes she would try and rub her own neck when she’d studied hard in the wall so she tried to do to him what she’d done for herself in the past.
For the next hour, she worked one shoulder then the other, the back of his neck, and then gently pulled his head back to rest against the chair. Her fingers rubbed small slow circles at his temples, then she used her thumbs to massage at the sides of his nose, over the sinuses, up to the frontal sinus on his forehead and ending with a gentle scalp massage.
Severus had never felt anything like it. No one had given him a massage before and it felt wonderful as she worked each knot in his muscles until they were soft and pliant. It was not long before his eyelids grew heavy. When she laid his head back and started on his temples, he drifted off to sleep feeling more relaxed then he had been his whole life.
Sky heard the low moans he emitted every now and then and knew he was relaxed now. When she heard him snoring softly she stopped. ‘His headache must have gone.’ She thought with a smile.
She sat opposite and watched him. His head was tilted back on the chair, his lashes rested like two small bands of black silk against his cheekbones. His hair was messed up from her fingers and his mouth was wide open. But his face was relaxed. There were no frown lines, his lips looked full instead of pressed into a thin line and his hands hung loosely over the ends of the chair arms instead of curled into the tight fists he usually formed after a day’s teaching, or when he was niggling at her. The drawer would have to wait for tomorrow.
