CH 37 No slip, no trip
“What are you working on at this ungodly hour?” He asked.
“Err, History of Magic.” She answered softly.
“Binns set you homework first week back? How come?”
“Probably because I’m new, no one else got any. Why are you talking to me?”
“Would you prefer that I shout?”
“No, but you usually say something mean and try to hurt me.”
“Yeah, well I’m bored with that, what did old Binns set you?”
“Rise and fall of Grindlewald. Does that mean you’re gonna stop trying to bully me?”
“That’s sixth year stuff, he can’t expect you to do that. It means I can’t be bothered wasting my time on you.”
“Well I still have to do it. So we’re okay then, you and me, no more fighting?”
“Let me know if you need any help with that, I got top marks for my essay. I’ll still be keeping an eye on you, but so long as you behave, I’ll leave you alone.”
With that he stood and headed back to the dorms.
Lou was left feeling confused and relieved. She tried to concentrate on her homework and managed 2½
feet before her friends showed up.
Lou quickly packed her things away and headed to breakfast with the girls.
She attracted quite a few stares from the other houses at the sight of her collar, Slytherin may already have seen it, but the rest of the school had not. She attracted more attention though because of how she looked. Lou was an attractive you woman with a good figure, she just didn’t know it and felt uncomfortable at the looks she was receiving from fourth to seventh year boys.
“Why are they staring at me?” She asked Stacy.
The girls started giggling. “Because you look hot you daft bat, why do you think.”
“I what?” She said, horrified. “I can’t, I don’t want to. I’m gonna go change.” She mumbled, starting to rise from her seat.
Bernie and Nichole pulled her back down. “Don’t you dare, look, even Professor Snape is eyeing you up.” Bernie told her laughingly.
Lou turned fiery red and looked up at the head table. The Professor was looking at her alright, but he wasn’t eyeing her up, he was scowling at her.
‘Lou knew he hated muggle clothes, but surely he wouldn’t stop her wearing them on a weekend like the rest of the students. Would he?
“He is not eyeing me up Bernie, he’s scowling at me.”
“Yeah, but he made sure to get a good eyeful first. I saw him.” Anna told her.
“You did not, he probably just doesn’t like what I’m wearing, what any of us are wearing for that matter. Anyway, Stacy’s top is much shorter than mine, and her jeans are lower. Show them Stacy.” Lou demanded.
Stacy stood and gave a small wiggle for the benefit of her friends, and several of the boys looking their way.
None of them dare look in the direction of the head table.
Ron’s eyes nearly popped out of his head when he noticed Lou. “Harry, look at Lou, she looks bloody hot.”
“Yeah, I noticed Ron, but don’t go getting any ideas, otherwise a certain friend of hers might take umbrage and decide to hex your eyeballs from your head.”
Both boys looked covertly up at the head table, both noticing the scowl on Snape’s face and the twinkle in Dumbledore’s eyes.
Severus was fuming over the way Lou was dressed, or not dressed as he saw it.
His scowl disappeared however, when McGonagall began reluctantly admitting that the new Slytherin student had bested Miss Granger in Transfiguration. The other Professors agreed that she’d done likewise in every lesson, and Severus was gloating over the fact that it was one of his Slytherins who was now the new golden girl.
During her second week Lou was told to meet with Madam Hooch at the main entrance immediately after Monday afternoon potions class.
Lou was taken onto the grounds and had to show Madam Hooch how she sat the broom and how well she could fly. The flying instructor flew close beside her, studying her constantly.
“Considering how you need you hold that leg, you seem to be doing reasonably well, not good enough however, and your landings are atrocious. Professor Snape tells me you enjoy flying immensely, is that correct?”
“Yes Professor it is. It’s like I can leave the world behind, that nothing matters, no one exists but me and the sky and I feel free.” Then Lou turned pink and lowered her head. “That sounds really stupid, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be, it doesn’t sound stupid at all. In fact you’ve made me all the more determined to adapt that broom of yours and ensure you are able to fly safely. Leave it with me and I’ll see what I can do. Meet me here at the same time next week. I like a challenge, and you are my challenge for this term. I’ll soon have you flying with the best of them, that is if you’re willing to put in the effort.”
“I will, I promise. I want to be able to fly like Se …someone I know.”
Lou was excited the following Monday when she met with Hooch. Her broom had a small, lightweight frame attached, Lou was told these frames were normally fastened to brooms during quiddich games.
When Lou asked what quiddich was, she was given a half hour lecture on the rules of the game and told she must support her house team when the games commenced.
The frame had been extended slightly, thanks to Hagrid, and widened so that Lou could place her feet into the framework. It also had a lower bar that was hinged to move in any direction, and if she kept her feet on it during landing, her leg wasn’t jarred.
After her fourth lesson with Madam Hooch, Lou was flying high and fast and loving it. It was like nothing else on earth to her and she was always reluctant to come down.
“A couple more weeks and you can join the rest of your classmates for lessons. One to one has suited you fine, but you’re almost up to the standard of the other fifth years.”
Lou couldn’t thank the woman enough and was excited at the prospect of flying with her friends. She’d told them about having her broom adapted and that she was having lessons so she could join them.
The girls wanted to arrange a small friendly quiddich match and include Lou, so she could learn about the game first hand.
During these four weeks, Draco left her alone as far as the bullying went. She was still unnerved on occasion when he actually spoke to her in a civil manner, twice more offering to help her with homework that was clearly sixth or seventh year standard. Since Draco was no longer intimidating her, neither were his friends and Lou was content to leave it that way.
She had friends in Slytherin and Griffindor and her lessons were going well.
Kreatcher told her that a female elf named Pegnose kept pestering him to take her out.
Lou told him he should and Kreatcher reluctantly agreed.
Bobby, the elf who looked after Lou when she was first given control of a small part of her powers, came to take over while Kreatcher prepared for his date.
The little elf was delighted to see Lou again and couldn’t do enough for her.
Lou was happy to tell Bobby all about her lessons and how Madam Hooch adapted her broom so she could fly like her friends.
On the fifth Friday at Hogwarts, her friends were excited when they entered the common room after classes finished for the day.
“What’s going on?” Lou wanted to know.
“It’s Hogsmead weekend, aren’t you excited too?” Bernie asked.
“What’s a Hogsmead?”
The others laughed. “You mean you don’t know? Hogsmead is the only all wizarding town in the whole of Britain. We get to visit every four weeks and shop, go to the Three Broomsticks for Butterbeer. You’ll love it.” They told her.
Lou was looking forward to going to Hogsmead the following morning and dressed smartly, ready to go right after breakfast.
She joined the long queue of students with her friends and watched as a seedy looking man ticked off names on a list.
When it was her turn she gave the man her name and he checked his list.
“Yer not down here, where’s yer permission slip?”
“My what?”
“Permission slip girl. No slip, no trip. Next.” He called, ignoring Lou and moving on to the next student.
“Lou, why didn’t you get your slip signed?” Anna asked.
“I haven’t got one. Where do I go to get one now?”
“Professor Snape I suppose, but you should have got one with your Hogwarts letter.”
“Well I didn’t, they must have forgot to put it in. I’ll go find the Professor. You guys go on, I’ll meet you there. Is it far?”
“About a mile.” Stacy shouted. “Meet us outside Honeydukes. You cant miss the place, there’s always a crowd outside.”
Lou headed down to the dungeons and knocked on Professor Snape’s office door.
As soon as he shouted ‘Enter’ she went in.
“Professor, someone forgot to put a permission slip in my Hogwarts letter and I want to go to Hogsmead. Can you give me one please?”
“I could, but I won’t. Did you not stop to consider there might be a reason you did not receive the slip?”
“Erm …no Sir, I didn’t. Was there a reason?” Lou asked, feeling disappointed and wondering why she couldn’t go with the others.
“At the time the letters were sent out, you were still wearing the cuffs I believe, that alone should tell you something.”
“Oh. I forgot about those, but you can trust me now. I don’t want to run away any more, I like it here and I’ve got friends. Please can I go to Hogsmead Professor? Please.”
“There is also the fact that you are wanted by the Dark Lord. Should it be discovered that you were the one at Spinners End that night, it is unlikely that he would spare you no matter how much he wishes to get his hands on your coffers.”
“But he wont find out, how can he? It was weeks and weeks ago, he’s probably forgotten all about it by now. Please Professor, I really want to go. All my friends are there.”
“I am afraid it is not possible. Besides which, the headmaster is your legal guardian, as such, he is the one who would have to sign the permission slip and he is currently away on business. You will have to find something else to occupy your time. Might I also suggest that you dress in a more appropriate manner, you are fifteen years old, yet you dress like a Knockturn Alley tart. Go and change your clothes.”
Lou was about to argue her case, but he walked to the door and held it open for her.
Dismissed, Lou left the office with a mixture of anger, hurt and humiliation that she didn’t know how to deal with. “Well I’m not changing my clothes.” She muttered once she was out of arms reach.
She stormed into the common room and threw herself onto the sofa, not even looking to see if anyone was on it.
“OUCH. Bloody hell, what do you think you are playing at?”
Lou was shocked when she landed on someone and couldn’t get off the sofa quick enough. She ended up on the floor, looking up at Malfoy and Zabini.
“Oh bugger. I’m really sorry, I didn’t see you.” She said. “Oh shit, you’re gonna kill me aren‘t you?”
“So we noticed, and no, we‘re not going to kill you.” Zabini said, standing and helping her to her feet.
“Th …thanks, I’ll …erm …I’ll be going then.” She told them, edging away towards her room.
“What’s the hurry? And how come you’re not on your way to Hogsmead with the others?” Malfoy wanted to know.
“I can’t, I haven’t got permission. Why aren’t you there?”
“As seventh years, we get to go any weekend we want. So what do you plan to do on your own for the next two days?”
“I don’t know, I’ll think of something later. Right now I’m too annoyed and upset to care.”
“We could take you to Hogsmead you know.”
“How? I told you, I haven’t got a signed slip. I haven’t even got a slip come to that, they won‘t give me one.”
“We have our ways, ask Blaize if you don’t believe me.”
“I didn’t say I don’t believe you, but why would you want to help me when you don’t even like me?”
“Who said we don’t like you?”
“Well duh, you’ve treat me like shit since you first laid eyes on me, that doesn’t exactly say friendly to me.”
“You’re a feisty little chit, I’ll give you that, but seriously, if you want to go, we’ll get you there.”
“No, I don’t trust you. You’ll probably leave me in the middle of nowhere then come back here and tell on me. Well thanks, but no thanks.” She told them, turning and heading for her room.
Malfoy and Zabini followed her quietly and waited while she put her hand to the serpents coils, lowered the wards and opened her door.
Once inside, she pushed the door closed behind her, threw her bag on a chair and sat on the side of the bed sulking.
“Aren’t you going to invite us in?”
Lou looked up startled.
Zabini stood with one foot in the doorway, Malfoy at his side as they stood grinning at her. “No I’m not, I’m not allowed to have boys in my room.”
“Fine, but we’re not boys in case you haven’t noticed. We’re both legally adults and as such, we’re men.” Draco told her, attempting to step into the room.
Lou grabbed her cane, ready to fight them if they came near her. But she needn’t have worried, when Professor Snape told her that someone could only enter her room on invitation, he was speaking literally.
Draco appeared to walk into an invisible wall and couldn’t cross the threshold of her room.
“Oof! What the bloody hell kind of ward is that?” He asked, holding his nose.
She started to giggle. “I don’t know, it’s not one of mine. Your nose is red.” She told him when he lowered his hand.
He glowered at her for a moment then smiled. “I’ve had worse, so why won’t you invite us in? No ones gonna know.”
Lou saw him smile, but it didn’t reach his eyes. They stayed cold as steel and there was no way she would let him set foot in here, or his co-hort.“
“Why do you want to come in? I haven’t got anything in here that would interest you, and we haven’t got anything in common.”
“I can think of several things we could find to amuse us all.” Zabini told her. “But you are clearly too young to appreciate anything a more mature person would have to offer. We shall leave you to your childish sulking.”
He turned to walk away but Lou was riled now. “I am mature, don’t you dare tell me I’m not mature. Just because I don’t trust you, doesn’t mean I’m too young to know …anything. Go away.” She shouted and raised her wand in their direction. “I’m closing the door on the count of three, if your in the way when I do, it’ll be your own fault if you get hurt. One Two Three.”
Draco and Blaize moved away quickly, both unsure what Lou was capable of, but neither willing to find out if it meant pain.
They were astounded when they saw the crackle of energy that surrounded her, before a flash erupted from her wand and the door slammed shut in their faces.
“I’m writing to my father, he’ll be very interested in what we just saw.” Draco told Blaize.
“He won’t be the only one.” His friend answered, grinning as they both sat at the table to write their letters. “I am also curious about that collar she wears. It is possible that she is someone’s possession, or it could be some kind of harnessing tool. It is rare that someone would need such a thing, though not unheard of.”
“You think so? So who do we know that’s likely to own her? She’s certainly attractive, so I can understand why someone would stake a claim on her while she’s still fresh, but what about this harnessing, I’ve never heard of it before?” Draco wanted to know.
“My grandfather told me that in ancient Rome, sometimes a powerful wizard or witch would have their magic harnessed with such a collar, limiting the amount of magic they could use at one time. It gave their opponent an equal chance when in the arena.”
Grandfather said it happened in other countries also, but did not say where. “She is a Nilsen, perhaps she belongs to some Finish wizard, or is bound because she has great power. My grandfather would maybe know if he were to see the collar.”
“If it wasn’t for that little display just now, I’d say she was no more powerful than anyone else here, but now I am not so sure. I’ll mention it to father, though I think it’s more likely that she belongs to someone. I wonder who it is?”
The two boys left and headed up to the owlery.
Lou decided she would be safer sticking to her own room for the weekend, rather than risk getting caught by Draco and Blaize.
When the girls came back at four o’clock, they’d brought her a large bag of sweets from Honeydukes and snuck in some bottles of Butterbeer from the Three Broomsticks. They refused when Lou tried to pay them for the things they’d brought, saying they felt bad about leaving her behind.
“Don’t feel bad, I can’t go and there’s nothing any of us can do about it. But thanks for these.”
Stacy asked why she was shut in her room and she told them what happened with Draco and Blaize.
“Wow, you know what Blaize wanted to do don’t you?” Anna said.
“I’ve got a pretty good idea what they both wanted to do, why do you think I stayed in here where they couldn’t get me?”
“I dunno, Blaize is very good looking, and he’s a seventh year.” Said Bernie.
“You have him then, because I don’t want him, or Draco or any of them.” Lou told her.
“Don’t you like boys?” Nichole asked.
“I sort of do, but I don’t want to …you know. Anyway, it’s the only thing they’re after and I’m not giving that away to any of the numpties here.”
Anna’s eyes sparkled. “Ah, so you have your eye on someone elsewhere then. Who is it, where are they from? Or is it a Professor?” She asked with a sly smile.
“It isn’t anybody.” Lou told her as her cheeks flamed.
“Yeah right, like you’d blush like that if it was no one.” Stacy told her with a grin. “Go on, tell us, we wont laugh. Who have you got a crush on?”
“I haven’t, so stop asking.” Lou told her, unable to keep a small smile from her face. “It’s just that no one makes me feel like I want to …you know.”
“Well I like the new DADA professor, have you seen those trousers he wears, they don’t leave much to the imagination. I have to admit though, I loved the look on his face when you silently blocked his spell last week, I don’t think he knew what hit him, ” Nichole giggled.
“Oh yeah, Professor Warren, he’s gorgeous. Those eyes of his, they’re as green as Potters. What I wouldn’t give to have them boring into mine.”
“You lot are impossible.” Lou told them. “Is that all you think about?”
“Yes.” They all answered at once.
“Hey, your friends with Potter Lou, can you introduce me?” Stacy asked her.
“What, to Harry? I suppose so, but I thought you lot didn’t like Griffindors?”
“Depends on the Gryffindor in question. Dean Thomas is quite a looker too, and I reckon Weasley fancies you.”
