Pluto: Don’t worry, the lemons will come. Just writing a really heavy one now, but you wont get to read it for a while yet. Sorry. I have to build up to these things.
Chapter 37
When he looked closely he realised she had nineteen runic symbols on the back of her left shoulder. Like the ones the students now wore, they were a slightly lighter shade than her skin, but these were slightly raised so she would know by a simple touch what each one represented.
“Great force, humankind. Paula what have you done?” He was appalled that she seemed to have invoked some kind of runic power along with her oath, that she did so for him was simply beyond his ken.
“I have done what needed to be done, nothing more. You will suffer greatly before this is over Severus; you at least need to know that there will be something good at the end of it all. Someone still on your side. We will talk no more on the subject. If you need to talk about Draco I will be here, but of my vow, it is done and cannot be undone.”
Severus stood slowly and moved round the table. He stopped in front of Paula, staring down at her, his eyes hard and dangerous. “Oh of course, you do not wish to talk any more, so of course we won’t. You go too far Paula, who told you? Where did you learn all of this? You say you read souls, yet cannot read what is in a persons mind, still you know more than you should, more than is safe to know.”
He grabbed her shoulders and pulled her up until their faces were level. Tell me what you know, everything.” He said, his voice a low growl.
“I have told you what I know Severus, and you are hurting me. Please let go.” She said as calmly as she could, though there was a slight tremor in her voice. “I am on your side, there is no need for this.”
“So you say. I have trusted you up until now, allowed you to manipulate me, done things I would have done for no one, yet you shut me out. You know things you have no business knowing and tell me you can make it all better.” He gave a harsh laugh. “Who are you Paula? Who are you really? Until you tell me, I do not wish to see you again.”
He let her go and left the wagon, slamming the small door behind him.
Paula ran to the door and opened it. She stared after him as he stalked across the grounds and entered the castle. This time he did not stop at the door and look back. When she turned back and closed the door, her eyes were filled with tears.
“I am failing you Severus, I am sorry. It was not what I meant to do.” She said softly to the empty space where five minutes before he had sat.
Paula headed down to the stables. “Riley, fancy taking me for a ride?”
Riley whinnied and walked out of the stable. He lowered his head and nuzzled her affectionately.
Within minutes the two were soaring over the towers of Hogwarts, they flew through the wards and for the next two hours, they dipped, swerved and careened the skies over hill and mountain, glen and loch, until Paula finally clicked her tongue and guided him back to Hogwarts again.
“Matthew will be here to tend you in the morning Riley. No mischief, the boy thinks highly of you.”
Riley nodded his assent as Paula rubbed him down before thanking him and sending him back into the stables.
For most of the night Severus paced his rooms, alternately seething and despairing at what took place in the wagon. He was convinced that she knew of his vow to Narcissa, distressed that she appeared to realise what he must do if Draco failed to kill the Headmaster, and miserable over the fact that he felt Paula had kept so much from him, was still keeping things from him. He was also unhappy that he had just destroyed the only true friendship he had ever had. “Damn that woman.” He grumbled angrily. “Poking her nose into places it has no business being. Making promises she cannot hope to keep in a million years.”
“I will have to tell him kak. He is angry with me, he thinks I am keeping secrets from him intentionally. Which I am, but not to hurt him or to make myself feel superior to him.”
Paula sat in the Headmasters office after the first training session with the students in the Forbidden Forest. Mostly they had gone over things most of them already knew, but Paula was insistent that everything would begin anew. That way those who were not yet at the level of the 6th and 7th years would have a chance to catch up, and the older ones would have the chance to refresh their memories as well as learning how to help those who still needed bringing up to par. She also made them run for several miles through the forest, into the darkest depths and through streams. They were all exhausted, scratched and sweating, but still she made them continue. When they eventually reached the clearing, again she did not allow them to stop and catch their breaths. Instead, she ran circles round them, sending out stunners and patroness’, forcing them to react and protect themselves and each other.
“From what you have told me Paula, he has invested a great deal of himself in you without even realising he was doing so. I think you are right, tell him everything and let him take it from there.”
“You must have said something to her Headmaster. She knows too much.”
“Severus I have not said a word. Everything she has said to you is by her own reasoning. She was in here at lunchtime you know. The poor woman is terribly upset and blames herself for you losing your temper. Give her a chance Severus, let her explain things to you.”
“I gave her a chance, several chances. That blasted witch has had me practically running through hoops for her, well no more, I have enough to contend with. She is your responsibility Headmaster, just keep her out of my face.”
“Were you not given chances Severus? She cares about you, more than you realise. I believe you might care about her also, you just refuse to admit it.”
“I do not care about her.” Severus spat. “You know full well why. There has only been one woman in my life and I do not have room for another.”
He turned and stalked from the Headmasters office, not bothering to say goodbye or even closing the door behind him. He was incensed, he needed to clear his head. Instinctively he made his way outside and headed for the little campsite, the place he always went recently whenever something was on his mind. Then he suddenly realised that he was heading directly for the one person who was causing him all this stress. Paula. Turning on his heel, he headed back to the castle and his rooms.
Paula looked up and saw the approaching figure through the open upper half of the wagon door. She half stood, ready to greet him and offer an apology for last night when he stopped, turned and walked the other way. Sinking back into her chair she sighed. It was clear she would have to approach him, but not yet. Obviously, he was still angry at her, the fact he had not been thinking clearly enough that he was heading here without meaning to was evidence of that. Paula decided to let things settle down for a few days. If he did not turn up for dinner on Friday evening, she would seek him out.
