The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 37
No amount of tears, arguments, pleading or cajoling from Lucy was able to sway anyone’s mind. The decision was made and she was stuck with it.
The whole of the following week was spent in the presence of the Potion Master, he cut her no slack, expecting perfection in each and every task set. Each and every day was filled with brewing and preparing ingredients, every evening she would return home with a long list of essays. The only advantage Lucy had was her computer. Thanks to a notepad peripheral, she was able to program her own, unique style of handwriting into the computer, type out the essays, use the spell checker, then simply print them off. Writing them by hand would have been long and laborious for her, since using a quill seemed to take twice as long as it would have were she using a normal ballpoint pen. As far as Lucy was concerned, she was simply making the best of a bad job, implementing her resources, and definitely not cheating, since she was still doing the research herself.
Because she printed on parchment, Snape had no idea she was not physically writing the essays by hand, and ended up being impressed at her penmanship and the fact she never appeared to make a spelling mistake.
Hetty felt her granddaughter was finally accepting her place in the magical world, and was happy she was applying herself.
Lucy, though determined to take shortcuts wherever she could, came to the conclusion that if she wanted the chance to live with her gran again, the only option was to knuckle down and do her best while at Hogwarts, though as the end of the week drew near, her sexual urges were once again coming to the fore.
On Friday at the end of her final lesson with Snape, Lucy was escorted to the Headmasters office. Expecting a reprimand for some misdemeanour she was as yet unaware she’d committed, Lucy was surprised to be offered a seat and a cup of tea.
“Miss Grindelwald, as you are aware, the new term begins on Monday. The students will be arriving on Sunday and we will be having our usual sorting feast. I… we, felt,” Albus indicated Professors Macgonagall, Vector, Sinistra and Snape. “that you might prefer to have your sorting now, as apposed to being subjected to the whole school witnessing it. Normally we would not offer this concession, but since you are not a first year, it was considered you might find the experience a little… awkward. However, the choice is yours. If you wish to be sorted along with the new students, you may be.”
Lucy was surprised, but grateful. “Erm, I think now would be best, thanks.”
Professor Macgonagall stepped up to her, holding the rattiest looking hat Lucy had ever seen.
“What’s that for?”
“This is the sorting hat. It has sorted students into their respective houses for the last thousand years.” Macgonagall told her proudly.
“But it’s dirty.” Lucy complained, disgusted at the thought of having something that old put on her head. “It might have nits or something.”
“I may be old young lady, and somewhat shabby around the edges, but I can assure you I am clean.”
Lucy jumped from her seat when a rip in the hats cone opened and spoke. “It talks.” She said, amazed, and not a little bit nervous.
“Well of course it does, how else would it be able to assign houses if it could not speak. Now sit down and I will place it on your head.” Macgonagall told her, a pursed lipped expression on her face.
Lucy sat back down and eyed the hat warily. When it was placed on her head she tensed, the hat was speaking inside her head.
‘Ah, a Grindelwald, and a rather sharp one at that. We haven’t had one of your lot in these halls for many a year. Not afraid to speak your mind I see, nor are you averse to using whatever means possible to meet your own ends. Intelligent yes, but no Ravenclaw, and accepting of others, a good Hufflepuff trait. But I think Slytherin will be your making.’
“Slytherin.” The hat shouted.
Lucy snatched the hat from her head, and looked up to meet the faces of her Professors. Macgonagall seemed disappointed, while the headmaster did not seem at all surprised. Snape however had a sour look on his face.
She vaguely remembered Hermione and the others telling her Snape was Slytherins head of house and she groaned. “Can I change it?” She asked hopefully.
“No, once sorted, that is the house you will be in until you have completed your education at Hogwarts.” Albus told her.
“But my friends are in Gryffindor, I don’t know anybody in Slytherin. They might not speak to me anymore if I‘m in Slytherin.” She complained.
“Then you will have the opportunity to make new friends Miss Grindelwald. Now stop complaining and accept your lot, as the rest of us have to do.”
Lucy glowered at Snape, this was all she needed.
Before leaving, Lucy was told to arrive at Hogwarts on Sunday afternoon after lunch. She would be shown to the Slytherin common room, and assigned a dormitory before the rest of the students arrived. Once the carriages pulled up, she would be expected to join them in the Great Hall and take her seat at the Slytherin table alongside her housemates.
“Slytherin gran, I wanted to be in Gryffindor with Hermione and Ginny.” Lucy complained once she and Hetty were back at the cottage.
“That cannot be helped, sometimes we must accept the choices that are made for us.”
“You know gran, I’m beginning to wonder when I last got to make a decision of my own, and Harry and Ron said Slytherins are no good, that they all turn out bad.”
“Not all Slytherins are bad Lucy, it is mere house rivalry that causes them to say such things, there are good and bad in all houses. You’ll be fine, trust me. You are headstrong, and rather cunning when it suites you, good traits for a Slytherin I believe.”
“Yeah, the hat said something like that. I hope Hermione and the others will still talk to me.”
“They will, if they are true friends. And remember to use some discretion when the urge comes upon you, I do not want to hear from Albus that you have been less than prudent when it comes to your choice of venue when engaging a young wizard. Try and find one you like, then stick with him if possible, rather than getting yourself a bad name.”
“Gran please.” Lucy was beet red.
“Never mind ‘gran please’, I mean it Lucy, just because you cannot help these urges and the staff are aware of your… problem shall we call it, does not give you carte-blanche to be openly promiscuous.”
“Right gran, I’ve got the message okay. Now please, can we change the subject.”
After tea, Lucy trudged upstairs to pack her cases with everything she would need while residing at Hogwarts. She dithered for a while over the laptop. If she took it, it would need to be well hidden, if others saw her using it it could cause problems. “Sod it.” She mumbled, willing the laptop and accessories smaller before packing it into her backpack.
She pent most of the night tossing and turning, then at five am, giving up completely on sleep, she got up, dressed and went downstairs. Writing a hasty note for her gran and leaving it on the kitchen table, Lucy called Maxi from his basket and headed out over the hills behind the cottage.
Maxi was more than happy to have an early morning run, though he stayed protectively close to his mistress, the sun being still over the horizon.
When they returned a couple of hours later, Hetty was in the kitchen cooking breakfast.
“Couldn’t sleep?”
“No, I was the same before I came here, and just before they moved me to Montford. Gran are you sure you won’t change your mind about me staying here?”
“The decision is made Lucy, it’s for the best. Once you settle in and make new friends you’ll be fine. You managed at your last school didn’t you?”
“Yes but… “
“Then it’s settled, no buts young lady. Come on, have some breakfast. Have you packed everything you will need?”
“Yeah, I did it last night, but I’ll check everything over later this morning.”
“Good, Albus will be coming to collect you,. Oh, and I invited him and young Severus for lunch.”
“Gran, why do you keep calling him… you what? Professor Snape is coming for lunch? Why?”
“Because I happen to like the young man, and I think it’s about time you two learned to get along.”
“Huh yeah, he can’t stand the sight of me.”
Hetty ignored the comment. “Once you’ve checked your bags, you can peel the potatoes for me, hurry up.”
“Can’t you peel them with magic?”
“Yes, but I’m not going to.”
“Can we have chips then?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because you want chips with everything.”
“I like chips.”
“Well not today. I do not intend to serve my guests with a plate of chips. Now eat your breakfast.”
As soon as her cases were in the hall, Lucy headed for the kitchen. The minute Hetty’s back was turned, Lucy grinned and willed the potatoes to peel themselves, only to have her gran tell her off and start again.
Lucy waited po-faced in the living room as Hetty invited the two professors in the front door. After peeling the potatoes, Lucy had to scrape the carrots, peel the parsnips, and clean out the fire grate. Not that she minded, but she was resentful about doing so just because Snape was coming.
After the initial greeting, Albus tapped Lucy’s bags with his wand, sending them directly to Hogwarts so the elves could place them in the Slytherin dorm.
“Something smells quite delicious Madam Grindelwald, roast beef?” Severus asked.
“That nose never misses a thing does it boy. You’re lucky we’re not having burgers and chips. If Lucy had her way, that’s what would be on the menu.” Hetty told him with a chuckle.
“Then she will be able to indulge her passion this evening at the Sorting feast.” Albus put in as they were ushered into the living room. “Miss Grindelwald.” He greeted.
“Hello.” Lucy said from the sofa with not much enthusiasm.
“Lucy.” Hetty warned.
Lucy stood and gave a brief smile. “Sorry. Hiya.” She said, holding out a hand.
Albus took the hand and shook it, but when she offered the same courtesy to Severus, he pointedly ignored the gesture and turned to speak to Hetty.
Lucy was livid. How was she expected to make amends with someone that totally blanked her whenever she made the first move?
Severus too was not in the best of moods. Albus had accepted this invitation for both of them, without asking first whether or not he wanted to go. Which he did not. He was uncomfortable, especially after the Headmaster revelation about his and Hetty’s roundabout insinuation that he should engage the Grindelwald girl and suspected this was some ruse to push the pair of them together. Hence he was determined to discourage all and any contact with the chit.
