Sirius sat in front of the door, watching the werewolf curiously. For a while, Remus just glanced about his surroundings as though he were trying to figure out where he was. He looked at the dog, but then turned away. Having already known who the dog was, Remus knew he wasn’t a threat and became more interested in the things around him.
Sirius, for his part, kept a watchful eye on the wolf. At the moment, he did not sense any tension, but that could quickly change. Perhaps, if he played it right, Sirius could keep the wolf busy for the next few hours, thereby protecting the humans within the pack.A rustling sound came from behind the werewolf and Sirius dipped his head, trying to see behind the beast. His eyes widened a little and he whimpered, but he hadn’t been the only one to hear the sound. Remus turned and momentarily stared in the direction of the noise. They both watched as the Devil’s Snare began making a slow, almost leisurely move towards them. Sirius started panting. The plant was growing larger by the minute! A low growl caused the dog to turn his attention back to the wolf only to find the creature glaring at him. Sirius stood. He knew Remus wanted out of the house, but he had to protect the other men.A thought came to Sirius’s mind as he backed up towards the door. Follow me, Remus, he thought, hoping against hope that the werewolf picked up on his body language as he jumped at the door and placed his paws on the wood. He wagged his tail as the werewolf approached him and jumped back, out of the creature’s way.Remus slammed against the door, but it didn’t budge. Angry, the werewolf smashed against it again, causing the small window on the door to break and little the floor with glass. He growled, baring his teeth at the door.Sirius glanced behind them, seeing the plant creeping closer. He barked at it, drawing Remus’s attention to the offending plant. He snarled as he grabbed the door where the window was no longer there and pulled it off of its hinges. He threw the discarded door at the Devil’s snare and stepped out into the moonlit night. Sirius’s tail continued to wag as he merrily followed the werewolf out of the house and began prancing and hopping around the wolf, trying to instigate play.Remus ignored him as he lifted his nose up to the air and sniffed. The scent of sweating bodies and blood reached his nostrils. The wolf was hungry and there was fresh meat somewhere here. A low grumble escaped his chest before he howled.Sirius’s ears pinned back. Instinctively, he knew what that howl meant. He could only begin to guess where the other men were and he had to protect them. Perhaps if they had their wands, they would be able to defend themselves, but as it was… The dog growled and stepped in front of the werewolf. The two creatures stared at one another. Sirius hated to do this as this was his best friend, but there were lives at stake here. The dog, the man, he had to protect them. He prepared himself for what he knew would be a fight. He knew he wouldn’t win, he just prayed he would be able to keep Remus distracted long enough for the sun to come up.(II) (II)Lucius hissed as he stubbed his toe mid run. Severus stopped. Panting, as he looked at the older Slytherin. “Are you alright?” he asked, resting his hands on his knees for a moment. The blond nodded as he leaned up against a tree. “We have to find something,” he said, lifting his foot and checking his toes for lasting injuries. He didn’t see anything, though his toes were now sore and would make running difficult. His heart was beating fast and sweat had built up from the running.Severus frowned. “Find what?” he asked as he glanced at their surroundings.“I don’t know! Something we could use as a weapon? A branch? Or maybe somewhere to hide,” Lucius spat. “We can’t keep running. There’s no real place to go.”They heard another howl and glanced at one another. Though both were clearly worried for the dog, they also became even more concerned about themselves. “We have to go!” Severus huffed. “Hiding isn’t an option. As long as we keep moving, we should be able to manage to keep Lupin away from us, just like Black said.”The blond waved a hand. “Then lead the way,” he said.(III) (III)Draco looked around himself on his perch. The werewolf howls terrified him. He wished his father had stayed with him, but he knew what the consequences of that could have been. Still, he felt helpless in his position and he wanted to correct that.He glanced up at the breach in the barrier and a thought occurred to him. It wasn’t that far from him. Surely he could hit it with objects, maybe make it even wider. He blinked before searching around him for something to throw. He stopped when he realized how stupid he was for looking. He was in a bloody tree! He began breaking off branches and throwing them at the barrier. As luck would have it, the branches struck upon the barrier. Draco smiled as he began chucking even more branches at the opening.A final throw and hit caused the barrier to shatter entirely. Draco ducked his head instinctively, though he shouldn’t have worried. It wasn’t glass after all. He blinked when a cold raindrop landed on his bare skin and looked up.Not only was rain beginning to fall, but it was cold! He wrapped his arms around his body. A part of him wanted to run, to climb down and run, but he stopped himself. He knew he needed to stay put.(IV) (IV)Lucius and Severus froze in their tracks the moment the barrier shattered. They looked up to the night sky for a second before the rain began falling upon them. Severus cursed under his breath. He could taste freedom on the air, but with it came ice cold rain that threatened hypothermia.Lucius changed direction again and Severus followed him. “Where are you going?” the black haired man asked, catching up to his friend.“To get Draco,” Lucius responded, pointing in the direction of the tree. “We can leave now and find shelter from this wet cold.”Severus continued to follow the blond. He glanced up to the skies. Where was Hermione? Where was help?(V) (V)Remus stopped his prowl when the barrier broke. The world was suddenly covered in sounds and smells he hadn’t noticed before as the rain began pouring. He looked up as a bird landed on a tree branch next to him. With quick reflexes, he snatched the little blue bird before it could fly away. As the little bird screamed, the werewolf threw the small creature into his mouth and bit down. The taste of warm blood filled his mouth as he chewed. His eyes flashed along with the lightening. The bird tasted wonderful, but it was nowhere near enough. There were larger prey to hunt and he could smell them well upon the air.(VI) (VI)Sirius whimpered as he tried to pull himself through the garden, away from the house. He just had to make it to where he knew the opening of the barrier had been. He had little doubt that Hermione would go there and that would be where he would find the help he needed.Changing back into his human form, for he could no longer maintain the dog in this much pain, he held his arm close to him as he stumbled through the brush. He wasn’t sure if his arm had been damaged or if it was just his hand, but either way he was badly injured and in need of medical help.Draco was still in the tree when he heard the rustle and turned. Seeing Sirius, the young Slytherin gasped and quickly moved out of the tree. “Sirius!” he said, running up to the man.Sirius groaned as he felt himself collapse. He just didn’t have enough strength left in him. “Draco,” he whispered as he saw black.
Author's Note: Ok. So, we'll just pretend that didn't just happen.... Thank you raymareme and Anon for pointing out my blunder. That would have been horrible if everyone would have seen it. What can I say, though? Aside from my enthusiasm, I tried posting this chapter in the middle of the night! Lol! I'm only human, right?
