Demitri zipped up to Narcissa, taking Addie Mae from her arms. “Come!”
Narcissa didn’t hesitate, jumping up and letting him carry her with his other arm. Demitri blurred out of sight. He wanted Narcissa by his side forever, but he wanted it to be her choice, not the only choice. Addie Mae was clutching hard onto his neck, her breathing erratic. She was losing the battle to the full moon, especially since Remus was so close. She was about to shift, he could feel it. If she did, they’d have to wait for her to get her bearings before portkeying away and that would leave them vulnerable.
His worst fear was confirmed when Addie whispered an apology and shifted, digging her sharp claws into his chest. He set Narcissa down first and then helped the tiny little blond wolf cub down. She growled at him and swiped, a natural reaction to his vampire nature. He shifted then so he could communicate with her clearly.
“Addie, you must calm down.”
“Sharp teeth enemy.”
“I am your father,” Demitri said softly, his growl displaying his authority. “Pack.”
Addie sat down, cowering and whimpering. “Scared daddy.”
“I know love,” Demitri said, walking up and scruffing her on the neck before licking her muzzle in comfort. “Will you allow me to carry you back? Your mother is in danger.”
“Mommy will havs teefs wike you.”
“I hope not,” Demitri confessed, “but would it scare you if I had to turn your mummy into a vampire?”
“No daddy. Mommy will still luffs me.”
“Of course she will,” he said, licking the frightened little girl again. She had quickly become one of his most precious possessions, next to Narcissa. Others might have recoiled at his thoughts but he had been a vampire for a very long time. His family belonged to him and no one would get them.
“Well, well, what have we here?” a voice crooned from the darkness.
Narcissa spun and erected a shield around her family, eyes searching the darkness. A cloaked figure walked in the clearing and she gasped. The manner of dress was similar to the Death Eaters and she did not relish coming up against another one.
“Playing with wolves, are we Narcissa?”
Narcissa’s face grew dark. “Gibbon.”
“So you do remember me.”
“I remember you’re a worthless coward. What are you doing here?”
Gibbon growled. “I am here to end you.”
The sky lit up in colors as his mate squared off with the ex-Death Eater. Demitri was livid. No one dared mess with his family. He panicked, seeing a green light flying towards Narcissa, and jumped in front of it. It gave her the time to slash Gibbon down. She turned, shaking like a leaf as she checked Demitri. She knew vampires could take the killing curse, but it didn’t suppress her fear. Addie crawled over his still form, a low mournful howl escaping her.
“It’s alright darling,” Narcissa said softly. “He’ll be alright. Vampires can’t be killed.”
“But you can,” Gibbon rasped behind her.
Demitri came to just as Narcissa batted away a spell. Another was aimed at Addie. She threw herself in front of it, her shield too late to save her from the cutting hex. Demitri saw red, transforming back to himself and ripping Gibbon’s head clean from his shoulders before he could take another breath. Addie’s howl caught his attention and he raced back, his heart aching.
He could smell her precious blood, flowing out of her faster than he could possibly heal her with his saliva. It broke his heart. Addie was on her chest, nodding her little head at him, indicating that he should bite her. They’d never talked about it, never once spoken of it. What if Narcissa hated him?
“D-do it,” she rasped, barely able to open her eyes.
He nodded. “Yes my love. I will see you in a week. I only hope your son will forgive me.”
“He will,” she whispered. “I love you.”
Demitri smiled sadly and then bared his teeth. “I love you too.”
Addie backed off her mother’s chest and whined as her father sunk his fangs into her throat. It didn’t scare her, as it would most small children. She’d seen far worse in her short little life. This act wouldn’t hurt her mother any further. It would keep her here. Addie had seen too many die and leave her already. She didn’t want her new mommy to leave too.
Demitri picked up his newly bitten mate and his daughter and portkeyed to Hogwarts. He wouldn’t leave her side until she was back with him again.

Aiden, still in his wolf form, sat beside Zandra in hers as she watched her pack mates shift and find their forms. It didn’t take long. The moon coupled along with the frazzled arrival of Remus helped immensely. Still, he was on edge. Remus said there was to be a fight and they all needed to find their forms by then. They wouldn’t be able to fight the influence of the moon this first turning to switch back to their human forms.
That was where Aiden and the rest would come in. They could switch between forms quite easily, even Serena, who had just gotten the hang of her wolf form. It took a few tries but she now shifted flawlessly. He could hear his mother and father coming as well as Philippe. He supposed Harmony would be along with Harry and Ginny any moment.
“Are you frightened?” Zandra asked him.
Aiden nodded, a rather unwolflike motion, but she understood. “Nothing good comes from a battle.”
“I believe in you,” she said quietly.
He sighed. “I will protect you, not matter what.”
She turned to him, her crystal blue eyes holding onto so many emotions not seen in wolves. She felt the need to make her feelings clear to him. Whether it was the moon, her talk with Jonah earlier, or the fear of the upcoming fight, she didn’t know, but it was pressing. She knelt low to the ground and crouched further into him. When he looked down at her and cocked his head in question, she moved. It was a tiny gesture, one that she wasn’t sure was exactly wolf protocol. She licked him on the side of his muzzle.
Aiden growled, his inner beast dying to break loose and take the female. He held back, trying to keep his ardor to a minimum. Zandra didn’t deserve that. Instead, he steadied himself to ask, “why?”
“I… I want you… as my mate.”
“Jonah?”
“Just a brother.”
Aiden was unable to contain his joy, throwing his head back and howling in pleasure. He started as the other members of the pack joined him. They were happy for them, even Jonah. He howled again, knowing that they were getting the pack’s blessing. Their happy bonding moment was cut short by howls of another sort. They were the calls of war. Three more of their adults appeared moments later.
“Easy Lupin,” Severus ordered, noticing that Remus was practically salivating in anger. “We wait for them to make the first move.”
“Why?” One of the wolves called out and then grimaced when they noticed it was a bark.
Severus smirked. “It’s better to observe first than to dive in blindly. We’ll see what we’re up against and then we’ll go. Remember, we know these woods. They do not. No matter what, we have the advantage.”
The pack stayed quiet and still, using their new senses to learn about the upcoming enemy. There were too many to count, over thirty werewolf hybrids and even more full werewolves to start. There were also humans, each smelling quite evil in their own right. Harmony, Harry, and Ginny arrived a few minutes later, each poised to strike. They heard Narcissa’s confrontation but dared not move, fearing for her death.
“She’ll be a vampire in a week,” Philippe said hoarsely, letting them know her final fate. Wolf ears weren’t quite as sensitive as a vampire’s.
“Dormer,” Severus growled, sniffing the air. “Should have known.”
A few moments later, hundreds of cloaked figures joined them in the clearing. Dormer was out in front, his face boldly exposed where others had silver masks. Harmony breathed shallowly and grabbed for Philippe, who quickly enveloped her in his arms. She shook, seeing a million outcomes. She had to quickly pick a strategy or they’d be in trouble.
“Game plan,” she breathed. “Pack against pack. Remus, teach them to fight. They can’t transform either.”
Remus nodded his head at her, glad they’d found a potion that let him keep his human mind while transformed. It let him embrace the wolf without losing control. The fact that he was so acquainted with the family worked to their advantage. His wolf would still see the others as a rival pack.
“There are full werewolves as well. Only the full humans would be affected by the bite,” Harmony continued. “Still, take them out first. They are unpredictable. If you can’t overpower them, Remus, pull back. The rest shift and fire silver.”
Aiden barked his agreement, as did his brothers and sister. They would do what they had to. They didn’t relish introducing silver to the family, but they knew for sure that it wouldn’t hurt them beyond the initial heat of the spell. Still, it was risky.
“What of the rest of them?” Harry asked, his eyes scanning the horizon.
“That… is up for us. Severus, Celeste, you’ll be the ones to take the Malfoy’s spot. Stealth and drop. They used a medical spell, one for the heart I believe.”
“Stops it, I’d gather,” Philippe said softly, earning a nod. He quickly broke into Severus’s head and relayed the spell.
Severus nodded and grabbed Celeste, quickly getting into her head and showing her as well. They’d have to sneak across enemy lines though. It shouldn’t be too hard. They could fly as bats and avoid the battle if the others shielded them on the way over.
“Harry, Ginny, hold a shield for them,” Harmony ordered, seeing Severus’s thoughts. “You’ll have to fire as well.”
“Done,” Harry said.
“Philippe, eat your fill.”
“Here,” Severus said, holding out two potions for him. “Just in case.”
“Will that work on werewolves?” Harry asked, eyeing the potion for silver immunity.
“It couldn’t hurt,” Severus said, quickly analyzing the ingredients in his head. “I don’t see it interacting badly. Harmony?”
Harmony grabbed his hand, going weak kneed for a moment before breathing out a sigh of relief. “No reaction. It’ll help.”
“I have two of these,” Severus said, presenting the silver potion to Remus.
The werewolf opened his enormous jaws and allowed the daywalker to pour it down his throat. Remus coughed and sputtered for a moment before clawing at his throat and whimpering. A few minutes later, he settled. He barked, asking Severus to lay silver on him. Severus did so cautiously, pulling a silver chain from his pocket and draping it over Lupin’s tail. When he showed no reaction, Severus moved it over his body. Nothing.
“Perfect,” Harmony breathed.
They waited on baited breath for the other side to strike. It was only minutes but it felt like hours, hours in which to size the enemy up and realize just how colossal their upcoming task was going to be. Finally, the Master’s side made their move.
“Curious,” Dormer said loudly. “That you’re all looking rather keen on us being here.”
Severus snorted. “What do you want Dormer.”
“Why, to destroy you, of course. We warned you. You’re finished. We more than outnumber you.”
“Quality over quantity,” Severus said. “Shall we begin?”
Dormer growled in annoyance. His attempt at ruffling Severus’s feathers wasn’t working. He gave the signal for his troops to move in.
“Now,” Harmony breathed.
Harry and Ginny threw up a shield, covering them from the initial attack, hundreds of hexes striking it harmlessly. Severus and Celeste took that moment to shift, knowing the other side couldn’t see anything through the lights. They fell back and went wide, noticing that the shield bent around them. They just hoped that they could keep it up long enough.
The pack didn’t hesitate, charging at full speed. Remus led the way, slashing and biting at the opposing pack. The full werewolves would be too much for this pack and he took them on head first. Most were of the submissive nature but this was not a fight over territory. This was a fight to the death. Harmony had explained it to him quite clearly. There would be only one prisoner, the leader.
Deven stayed close to Remus. It was against his very nature, but he fought it. The werewolf was the strongest in the bunch. They couldn’t afford to lose him in this fight. He spun around, swiping the back legs out from one who got past the werewolf. It was heading for Zandra, and that couldn’t happen. He felt very protective of her, even more so than the others. He wasn’t sure if it was her past or if they were linked some other way, but he’d be damned if he allowed it to get his brother’s mate. His head cocked in thought. His brother. He wondered if there was any merit to that. As another werewolf tackled him, he put it out of his mind. There was no time to ponder. He had wolves to fight.
Aiden charged ahead of Zandra, striking down any wolf that dared to eye her. She was a warrior, ripping and biting those he didn’t get to fast enough. He was so proud of her. Her fear was long gone, fighting instincts taking over. She’d just made a miraculous tackle and he heisted, unable to keep from admiring her fierceness. It was too long and he got hit from behind by a full werewolf. Its powerful jaws chomped down on his back leg, snapping it in two. He howled in pain and anger, turning to retaliate. He saw red as he ripped his opponent’s throat out.
Serena was busy keeping two full werewolves off of Jonah as he fought a third head on. He was vicious and bloodthirsty, a quality that she admired greatly. He was getting the best of his opponent but she was having a tough go of it. She’d already been bitten several times making each movement sting. She was getting tired and that rarely happened. She saw an opening and went for it, latching on to one of the wolves’ throats. Unfortunately, this left her back unprotected and the other struck. She managed to clamp down, ending the one wolf before she yelped in pain.
Jonah flew into a rage, the thought of the tough daywalker being brought down making his blood boil. He tossed his late opponent aside, jumping on the one who had Serena pinned to the ground. He ripped it off of her, making her whimper, and quickly brought it down. There was a lull in activity, long enough for him to talk to her.
“You’ve got to change!”
“Too late!” she yelped back, diving for a hybrid who was trying to sneak up on Jonah.
Nate and Zach were double teaming the wolves, grabbing them from both sides and ripping them in half. They charged themselves with helping Andra, Lazarus, and Nahuatl, who were holding their own but were still uncomfortable in their forms. It was hard, bloody, and steady, but they were making progress. At least, until the remaining full werewolves launched an attack. They couldn’t last much longer, not with that many going after them.
“They aren’t going to make it,” Harmony whispered, casting spells as quickly as she could.
“Let’s see if I can buy them some time to switch,” Philippe said, zipping off.
He’d stayed by Harmony’s side the entire fight, stepping in front of stray curses that got through the shield. He had to leave her though or the kids wouldn’t have enough left to turn. It took him only moments, careening through the crowds of werewolves and throwing a blanket silver line to separate them. The kids took that as their signal, turning back.
Aiden hobbled over to Serena, linking arms with her before casting every silver spell he’d ever learned. Zach and Nate joined them, both looking worse for wear. Deven staggered along behind them, his left arm hanging uselessly by his side. The pack fanning out, Remus in front and began taking out those who weren’t affected by the blows. It was grueling, the strength of the daywalkers flagging from the extreme use of their magic.
“We can’t last much longer,” Harry said, casting another wandless hex around Ginny’s arm. The strain of the shield and the draw of the extra hexes were draining them.
Philippe zipped into the fray, ripping their opponents limb from limb and shielding as much as he could. “They’re almost there,” he called before diving headfirst into a band of former Death Eaters.
Philippe was right. Severus and Celeste had finally managed to find a place they could strike everyone from. They just needed to focus. The lines for the humans were clearly drawn, unlike the mixed fight the kids were putting up. No, they’d have to take the humans out first. They nipped at each other’s lips, sharing their blood to make sure they could cast this spell in tandem. It wasn’t going to be as powerful as the pure couple’s attempt, but by Merlin they were going to give it their all.
The familiar crackle of magic welcomed them, flowing higher and higher until they couldn’t hold it any longer, letting it go. One by one, the ranks fell, silently clutching their heart before dying. No one in the front would realize it until it was too late. It only took minutes to take them all out. Well, all except for one. Dormer would be theirs, if only he would stay still.
“All together,” Aiden gasped, noticing his mum and dad in position.
As one, the four siblings and Deven lifted their wands and wove a silver net, throwing it on the pack of approaching werewolves. Remus and the pack quickly took out the stragglers, leaving nothing in their wake. The four collapsed, bleeding, tired, but happy. The pack gathered quickly but it wasn’t hard to figure out that something was very wrong.
“Where is Nahuatl?” Aiden asked frantically, lighting up the area to see if she had gotten caught under a body.
“Oh Gods, no,” Serena cried, pointing the wayward water element out. She was being pinned down by Dormer’s boot, struggling to get up.
“Let her go,” Harry shouted, realizing what was happening.
“No, I don’t think so,” Dormer drawled. “We’ve been looking for this one for a while.”
Philippe ran, zipping across the field in the blink of an eye, but he was too late. Dormer disappeared, taking the poor wolf with him.
“FUCK!” He screamed, coming up empty.
“Gods no,” Harmony cried, falling to her knees.
“Will she live?” Harry asked.
“I…I don’t know,” Harmony sniffled. “But something worse has happened.”
“What?” Ginny asked warily.
“The others are finished fighting,” Harmony choked out. “They’ll be here in thirty seconds.”
“Who did we lose?” Philippe asked.
“You should ask how many,” Harmony cried, unable to say any more.
A portkey appeared in the middle of the field. The sight that awaited them made the family scream. No. It couldn’t be. Harry and Ginny ran blindly, scooping Albus up in their arms and quickly realizing that Martin was practically attached.
“Gods no,” Ginny cried.
Rhapsody collapsed, unable to speak. She’d sentenced her family member to death. She didn’t even want to live with herself. Deven ran towards her, sensing something was very wrong, very wrong indeed. He wouldn’t let her go until she settled though. Not this time, not ever.
