“You look pleased with yourself,” Hermione said dryly when Harry came staggering in at dinner.
She and Draco had made it back in time for their last class but she knew Harry and Ginny had done no such thing. Harry blushed red and sat down across from her, gathering several plates to him. He was determined not to say anything despite Hermione trying to stare a hole in his head. Ginny took her place at the table by Hermione and sat down very gingerly, a slight blush on her cheeks as she did. Hermione burst out laughing. She couldn’t help it. They smelled of sex and guilt.
“What’s come over you?” Ron asked cautiously as he slid into the seat beside Harry. Lavender plopped down beside him, lounging on him like an overly groomed poodle.
Hermione managed to stop. She didn’t want Harry and Ginny to get into trouble. “Something just smelled a little funny.”
Ron looked at her like she’d grown two heads. “Must have been hilarious.”
Hermione snickered. “Oh, it was.”
Ron stared at her like she had a bug crawling out of her mouth. She told herself that he was still trying to get used to her new status and tried not to let it bother her. Besides, he was probably extremely confused by her laughing outburst. She wiped the smirk off her face and picked up her ever present tea cup. Maybe a little blood would calm her down.
Ron blanched and pushed his plate away. Hermione closed her eyes so she wouldn’t have to see his reaction. It drove home just how disgusted he was with her new lifestyle. He might have accepted that she had no choice, but he still didn’t approve and that hurt.
“Ron, you wanker,” Harry hissed under his breath. “Stop drawing attention to it.”
“Bloody hell, Harry. I just… “ Ron wrinkled his nose and looked at her cup like it had spiders in it. “It’s disgusting.”
“It’s just tea,” Lavender said, peering over the cup.
Hermione was never so glad that she’d placed a glamour over her tea cup. At first glance, it looked like a normal cup of tea. Of course, one whiff would prove otherwise and she was certain no one wanted to sniff her cup. Ron looked at it flabbergasted. Hermione smirked and raised a toast to him before sipping some. It tasted just like Earl Grey, which she had been dearly missing.
Ron huffed and sat back down, choosing to ignore Hermione’s choice of drink. It was all she could hope for. By ignoring it instead of making a large deal out of things, he’d silently agreed to accept her. She knew he’d said that he had, but actions spoke much louder than words. His might as well have shouted. Harry and Ginny realized this too as they gave him a grin and sat back to eat, Ginny more stiffly than normal. Hermione giggled again and they continued their meal with more ease than they had all year.
“I’ve been thinking,” Harry said after a while.
“Of?” Hermione asked, still sipping her tea. She wanted to savor it.
“Restarting the DA.”
Hermione nodded at Harry’s pointed look. Yes, they’d have to soon, wouldn’t they? She hated to bring them into it, but she couldn’t deny them their right to fight. She sighed and sat her cup down.
“Just think of a time Harry. Everyone should still carry them.”
Harry nodded and returned to his meal. Hermione thought he looked more relaxed than he had in a while. She glanced at Ginny, who looked a cross between dazed, happy, and in pain. She felt a pang of sympathy for her. If she weren’t a vampire, her first time would have been much more painful. Actually, just thinking of her first time made her need to squeeze her legs together. She couldn’t think about that now though. She cleared her head and leaned in closer to Ginny.
“I can get you a pain potion… if you need it.”
Ginny shook her head. “I’m fine. Besides… it makes it… real.”
Hermione smiled and patted her arm. “Everything you thought it would be?”
“So much more,” Ginny whispered.
Hermione chuckled. “It only gets better from here.”
Ginny gave her a goofy grin. “I couldn’t imagine… but I hope so.”
Hermione nodded and gave her a sly wink. It made her heart pang, to pretend that Harry’s death wasn’t coming, that Ginny’s world would crumble, but she didn’t have the heart to burst her bubble. She knew that Harry didn’t either. She just hoped that Ginny would be strong enough to move on… after… after it happened. Hermione had faith though. Ginny was strong. She’d pack Harry’s memory up and carry it with her always, but she’d persevere. Hermione envied her. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to do the same… and she’d suffer for eternity.
“Oi!” Ron called, breaking her from her maudlin thoughts. “Youf gomma eat dat Mione?”
Hermione shook her head and gave her friend a smile. Some things never changed. She shoved her plate of food over to Ron, whose mouth was still crammed full of food. One thing about her new nature, Ron would never starve. He would just eat for the both of them.

“Things have been going well this past month,” Severus said as Hermione and Draco sat down in his private quarters.
“They have,” Draco said slowly. “But it won’t last.”
Severus shook his head. “No. Word is that your father and Bellatrix have been absolved of their perceived crimes. And while I am not surprised, this does increase the number of our opponents by two very dangerous foes.”
Hermione huffed. “We’ve fought them before.”
“We have,” Severus sighed. “But we will not be six vampires on two over confident Death Eaters. It will be the Order of the Phoenix and whatever straggling Aurors we can find against the Dark Lord and the entire contingency of Death Eaters.”
“We’ll need to leave the anti-disapperating charms up then,” Draco thought aloud. “It will prevent a quick escape. Unfortunately, that will be on both sides.”
“Can we make emergency port keys?” Melody asked.
Draco absently twirled Hermione’s hair as he thought, an increasingly frequent occurrence. Hermione didn’t mind. It made her feel better in some strange way. While Draco pondered the port keys, she thought about the past month. Ginny and Harry were hot and heavy, not caring what anyone thought of them. In a way, she was glad. Harry had chosen to live life to the fullest instead of backing away so he could make a quiet exit. It might be harder on Ginny in the end, but at least neither would have any regrets when… when it happened.
Ginny and Harry weren’t the only wild couple in the bunch. Ron and Lavender carried on so much that she had taken to avoiding them as much as possible. She didn’t have a problem with them being together, but their displays were absolutely disgusting. Their sloppy make out sessions with her amplified hearing were nauseating. To each their own, but she’d rather not view it… or hear it.
“I’ve got it!” Draco cried, startling her out of her thoughts.
“Got what?” Melody asked.
“Port keys out of Malfoy Manor are restricted by the same wards as apparition. However, port keys within the house are perfectly fine.”
“That’s not going to help anything,” Melody said with a frown. “We’d still be trapped in the Manor.”
“No, we wouldn’t,” Draco said. “Because I stashed the match to the vanishing cabinet in one of the abandoned wings. No one, not even the Dark Lord, goes there.”
Hermione frowned. “I thought it was at Burgin and Borkes.”
Draco shook his head. “Not any longer. I arranged for it to be delivered to the Manor just a few weeks shy of Christmas, thinking I’d have to show it to the Dark Lord as proof. Still, I didn’t want anyone tampering with it until I could present it, so I had it placed in that wing. We could make port keys to that room. From there, the injured could use the cabinet to go straight to the ROR.”
“Is it finished?” Severus asked.
Draco sighed. “No, but it will be soon. I’ve only got to replace the outermost wards. The last test I performed worked perfectly. Though it was a sparrow, it successfully sustained life. They should be able to use it as a passage in a pinch. I’ve even tweaked the spell so that it can be performed by someone underage.”
“That’s brilliant,” Melody all but shouted. “We can put Dobby and Winky in charge of monitoring it. If anything, that should sober that little elf up. She’ll be happy to have a purpose again. Anyway, it’s a brilliant plan.”
Severus frowned. “Unfortunately, it’s only one where we need many.”
“Well, it’s a start,” Hermione offered. “What did Dumbledore say about the Order helping?”
Severus pursed his lips. “The old coot has offered us whatever we need. He’ll rally the Order and we’ll go from there. I hate to say this, but how we go about this is all on Draco now.”
Draco nodded and pulled Hermione closer. “I’ve been thinking about it. What do you say to one last mission before the final battle?”
“What kind?” Severus asked.
“Revenge,” Draco answered. “For a wrong done long ago. You said father and Bellatrix are back at it again. What if we can take my father out of the picture?”
“By?”
Draco smirked. “Making him give the entire Order access to the grounds of Malfoy Manor.”
“And how do you propose to do that?” Severus asked.
Draco’s smirk widened. “All he has to do is grant permission for me to bring a guest of my choosing to the Christmas soirée.”
“That that’s just one guest,” Hermione said.
Draco’s face broke into a full evil smile. “I’ll choose the Order… collectively.”
“And those who aren’t members of the Order?” Severus asked.
Draco shrugged. “I suggest they join up.”
Severus frowned. “Dumbledore is particularly selective in who he allows to join the Order. I can’t say I blame him there. If the wrong person were privy to our secrets, it would get ugly.”
“So we make tiers,” Hermione offered. “They join so they are collectively part of the Order, but they have rankings as to how much information they are allowed to know.”
“A sound plan,” Severus said with a smirk. “One worthy of the brightest witch of the age.”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “Please stop it. I hate that title and you know it.”
“Maybe, but you deserve it. I’ll tell Dumbledore now.”
Melody clapped her hands together in glee. “Let’s get started.”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
“Again,” Severus snapped, drilling Harry harder and harder until he could barely stand.
“Sev,” Melody said quietly. “He’s tired.”
“The Dark Lord isn’t going to care if he’s tired!”
“He won’t make it to the Dark Lord if you don’t let him rest.”
Severus sighed and signaled for the end of training time. He wanted to push Harry to the breaking point, just to make sure he could hold his own against the Dark Lord. Hermione watched from the corner as Harry visibly wilted after the onslaught. She hated this, but she also knew that Severus was doing it for his own good. Her father still secretly hoped that Harry might get by on sheer will alone… like last time.
“Your turns,” Severus said, not willing to end yet. There were only two more weeks until the end… and he didn’t want to leave one stone unturned.
“Ready,” Draco called, taking his stance behind Hermione.
There would be no drilling them alone. He refused to leave her side and he’d all but ordered Hermione to obey his wishes. They’d argued so badly over them that Hermione fled and it took Draco, Severus, and Alex the entire weekend to find her again. She’d managed to make it all the way back to London before they could start tracking her. Her and Draco’s makeup was explosive and had finally ended with an agreement. He would not hinder her from fighting in any way, but he refused to let her go off on her own. It was something they could finally agree on, so long as she was allowed to fight.
The door to the ROR cracked open to admit Ron and Ginny. They’d managed to ditch Lavender long enough to sneak up to see Harry’s training. Harry all but crawled over to them, thankful for their presence. They pulled him over to the side and gave him a drink and sat with him to watch.
Hermione swallowed hard. This was the first time that she and Draco would fight in front of her friends. She worried about what they would think. Ron had finally started accepting her new nature and she didn’t want to prove that she was an animal. But fighting Severus was no picnic. As Melody stepped up beside him, her eyes glowing in the dim lighting of the room, she realized that this would be a full on fight, the works.
“Father,” she muttered under her breath. “You might out yourself.”
Severus shrugged. “Potter already suspects and I grow weary of hiding from the Dark Lord. It will all be over soon anyway.”
“Still.”
Severus sighed. “We’ll ask for another vow after it is finished.”
Hermione nodded and, in a bold move, tossed her wand to the side. She didn’t need it any more unless she wished to cast unforgivables, and she didn’t wish to this time. Draco followed her lead.
“A very bold move, indeed,” Severus said slowly. “Are you certain?”
Hermione raised her chin. “I don’t wish to break my wand before I need it.”
“Very well,” Severus said, placing his and Melody’s wands on a nearby ledge. “We’ll do this your way.”
“What the bloody hell,” Ron muttered.
“Shut it and watch,” Ginny growled.
Draco crouched down in front of Hermione, acting as a shield of sorts. It was a protective and instinctive move, but it also allowed Hermione to strike without drawing attention. Unfortunately, Severus and Melody had taught them this very maneuver and were taking the same stance. To their surprise, Harry gave a weak countdown. When he hit three, they were off.
Severus wasn’t about to go easy on them. He hit them with a blasting hex, to which Draco countered with a strong shield. Hermione shot off two slicing hexes, only to have to dodge them when Melody blocked them and they ricocheted. Draco grabbed her and launched them both up to the ceiling. Hanging upside down, Hermione blocked the barrage of spells flying their way as Draco scampered across the ceiling to get them in a better position. When he gave the signal, she cast a hex to break up the floor in front of their parents.
The next blow happened in less than a blink of the eye. Draco launched them down, tackling their parents. The wrestling portion of the night began. They wouldn’t use deadly force, but this move might cause them severe pain. Severus warned them that he would never go easy in hand to hand combat. Hermione knew she’d been had when Melody’s fangs were on her neck. She conceded with a tap. Melody pulled her back up and they watched as Draco and Severus snarled and snapped at each other, moving faster than the human eye could track.
Hermione chanced a glance at her friends. Harry was trying avidly to follow the men, a look of awe on his face. He didn’t look the least bit shocked, and why should he? He’d suspected that Severus was a vampire for a very long time. Ginny didn’t look all that shocked either, but she did look a little scared. Hermione couldn’t blame her. A vampire fight was brutal. Ron, well, she hoped she could put this moment in a pensive. He looked like someone had unhinged his jaw and froze him that way. It had to be a shock, if not to know that Severus was a vampire, then the knowledge of the skills he and Draco possessed. They were dangerous… deadly even… and Ron was having a hard time processing it.
Suddenly, the fight shifted and Severus had Draco pinned to the ground, fangs scraping his neck while his limbs were entangled in a magical tie, one he’d created himself. Not even vampires could escape it. Draco hissed and snarled but conceded, huffing in aggravation.
“Let it go,” Severus said softly as he released him. “I’m much older.”
Draco rubbed his wrists and glared at the ground. “So was Lysander.”
Severus nodded. “And he was much too cocky for his own good.”
“Bloody hell,” Ron managed to croak out. “What the fuck was that?”
“That,” Melody said, fighting down a snicker, “was one hell of a fight.”
“We have to get better,” Draco said on a sigh before he popped up and grabbed Hermione around the waist. “You alright love?”
Hermione nodded. “Let’s just hope we don’t come across any vampires.”
Melody snorted. “You two defeated a small coven before you were properly trained. You’ll handle them just fine.”
“Says the woman who had her fangs next to my mate,” Draco said dryly.
Melody’s face softened. “Not many covens are trained to fight little one. You’re so much more advanced. Even daddy is proud.”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “He was proud the day I resisted giving him a blowjob.”
Melody grinned as Ron gagged. “He was proud because you had a backbone. He was even more proud when you resisted his offer to finish you, and even more when you refused to obey period. I’m sure when he sees this pensive, he’ll come down here and cuddle the life out of you.”
“You’ve been showing him pensives?” Draco asked.
Melody nodded. “They need to train as well. They won’t be coming in with us, but they refuse to stand by. They’ll be waiting just at the edge of the wards, catching any stragglers.”
“But-“
“No buts,” Melody snapped, interrupting Hermione’s protest. “Nancy has just as much invested in this war as you two. It’s only right that she sees it to the end.”
“She’s right,” Draco said quietly, squeezing Hermione’s shoulder before she could speak. “Think of how she ended up in this situation in the first place.”
Hermione slumped against Draco. He was right. Nancy was treated like a pariah all because of pureblood views, tortured and left for dead, only to be found by Alex. At least her second life was better. She had a mate, a family, and wanted for nothing, except maybe real food.
Severus cleared his throat to gain everyone’s attention. “Whatever you have witnessed in this room tonight will stay in this room. Is that clear?”
Everyone nodded, even Ron, who still looked a little pale. Severus retrieved his wand and extracted a vow of silence from everyone before moving on.
“We’ll continue practicing until two days before the meeting. That way, everyone will be rested for the event. Now, it is almost curfew. Get out.”
Ron and Ginny wasted no time scampering out, both shooting Harry odd looks when he waved them on. Harry sat there, looking like a whipped puppy until they had gone. Severus glared at him but Harry didn’t budge. Finally, Severus gave an irritated grunt and conjured a chair to sit beside him.
“What’s the matter Potter?”
Harry sighed heavily. “What is the point of this? I’m the sacrificial lamb.”
Severus let out a feral snarl. “I didn’t protect you for sixteen bloody years so you could cower in a corner and await your fate!”
Harry looked up, startled at his long hated Professor’s outrage. “What?”
“You heard me,” Severus hissed. “I’m teaching you this so you can take a few with you, you ungrateful brat. Do you honestly think they won’t try to attack you? Only the Dark Lord can kill you Potter. I thought Dumbledore made that perfectly clear.”
Harry snorted. “That part he did. Why not just march in and get it over with.”
Severus bit back another snarl and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’ve thought you a lot of things, but I never took you for a coward, Potter.”
Harry’s dull eyes sparked to life. “I’m not a coward! I’m walking to my fucking death!”
Severus nodded sadly. “And you don’t care about how others will fare in the fight to get you there.”
Harry closed his eyes and let out a deep sigh. “Can you turn me? I’ll still have my soul.”
“Maybe,” Severus said quietly. “Maybe not. Potter, you will never know the full temptation of the Dark until you experience it firsthand. I’m sure the piece of soul in you that belongs to Riddle has planted many a dark suggestion in your head, but true darkness, that’s something that is hard to fight. Even Hermione had a time with it, and she’s one of the purest souls I’ve ever met. Now, imagine the temptation it would be if that sliver of Riddle were to latch on to the Dark. You would be lost forever.”
Harry frowned. “You did it. Malfoy did it.”
Severus nodded. “And we had extremely strong women by our side… and no corrupted psychopaths embedded in our souls. If you turned dark, you would lose your soul, and I believe Riddle’s last Horcrux would be forever immortal. Besides Potter, if you did succeed in fighting the darkness, an Avada would kill me just as surely as it would kill you. Remember, we aren’t like other vampires.”
Harry nodded sulkily. “Why are you just now letting me know what you are?”
Severus pursed his lips and summoned is wand. He removed several memories from his temple and placed them into a conjured glass vial. When he was through, he handed the vial to Harry and levitated a pensive through the room until it was resting on a nearby table. When he was finished, he headed out of the room, stopping by the door.
“Whatever you see Potter, I do not want to hear another word about it. Understood?”
Harry stared at the glass vial for a few seconds before he met Severus’s eyes. “Understood.”
Severus nodded and disappeared without another word.
“What am I going to see?” Harry asked no one in particular.
Melody sniffled, holding her tears at bay. “The truth Potter. Use the information wisely.”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
“Come.”
Hermione didn’t think twice about obeying the hasty order from her father. He’d been snappy ever since he’d given Harry his memories and it was much easier to obey him than to argue. Almost two weeks had not done any favors for her father's peace of mind. It had, however, given Harry renewed strength. True to his word, Harry didn’t utter a word of what he’d seen. Instead, he’d returned the vial, nodded at Severus, and resumed his defensive stance. It was everything Severus could have hoped for.
“Where are we going?” she huffed as she tried to keep up with him without looking as though she were moving abnormally fast.
“Detention,” Severus snapped for the benefit of those in the hallways. Christmas break had begun a few days prior, but there were always children who stayed over during the holidays. “Did you think you could get out of it?”
“No sir?”
“Exactly,” he snapped. “You’ll serve in the Forbidden Forest tonight.”
Hermione caught the wide eyes of a few of the first years as they scampered up to their dormitories. She almost laughed at the impression Severus was making but caught herself at the last moment.
“Yes sir.”
She wondered what they were doing tonight. Obviously, they were going to feed. The Death Eaters would be meeting at the Manor the next night and Draco still hadn’t been able to figure out where his father was so he could get permission for the Order to enter. She was starting to get nervous. That fled when she saw what awaited them deep in the forest. Draco was grinning widely as he held Lucius at wand point. She sniffed the air but didn’t sense anyone else about. Severus chuckled and pushed her forward for a better view.
“Go on. Glamour him.”
Hermione spun around in shock to look at her father. “Me?”
Severus nodded. “Who better to send His plans crashing down than the very first person to taste the ludicrous idea in the first place?”
Hermione squared her shoulders and marched up to Lucius. He tried to slam his eyes closed but Draco quickly charmed them open. She relaxed, thinking about drinking from him. All he had to do was calm down and let her give him something wonderful. His eyes softened and he got a dreamy expression on his face. She almost smirked at how easy it was to put him under but held herself at the last minute. She followed Draco’s instructions to the letter, eliciting a promise from Lucius to allow Draco to extend invitation to any guest he deemed worthy of attending Christmas dinner.
When she was through, Severus knocked Lucius out and erased his memory of the night. After Severus spun out of sight to return Lucius to the pub he was supposed to be in, Draco pulled Hermione into his arms and kissed her soundly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Hermione pouted.
Draco sighed. “I wanted it to be a surprise. That memory charm will wear off when we invade the Manor. I want to see the look on his face when he realizes he basically handed you the keys to his life.”
Hermione frowned. “Vindictive, aren’t we?”
Draco smirked. “Slytherin. Anyway, everything else has fallen into place. All of the members of the DA officially joined the Order last night. Remus sent word last night confirming it. The Aurors on our side have place tracking charms on suspected leaks just in case. Dumbledore has coordinated everyone’s efforts to get across. I’ll step them through the wards and then we’ll be off.”
“Who gets the snake?” Hermione asked.
Draco shifted in agitation. “That’s been left to us.”
Hermione nodded. “Good. I want to make sure it ends.”
Draco sighed and pulled her even closer. “I don’t want you to end.”
Hermione closed her eyes, not allowing herself to tear up. “I don’t want that for you either, but this world will be far worse off if we don’t do this.”
Draco nodded. “I know. But for tonight, let’s forget about everything.”
“An excellent idea,” Melody said, dropping in from above.
“How?” Hermione gasped.
“Mist… hard to track, impossible to scent, and your greatest weapon. Use it when you face Nagini. She can’t bite thin air. Anyway, I’m to take you to your fun filled night.”
“What?” Hermione asked.
Melody grinned. “Well, it’s like your mate said. This is the time to forget about everything. It took some doing, but I managed to convince Sev it was for the best. You don’t want to go into battle with any regrets. So, we’re going back to the club, the one we visited when you were first mated. We’re going to dance and feed and fuck all night long.”
Hermione went from happy to despondent in the space of a second. “What about Harry?”
Melody caught her chin and tilted it up. “It wouldn’t be much of a life if he never fucked in a very public place, now would it?”
Hermione’s jaw dropped. “He’s coming?”
Melody grinned and nodded. “Remus can be extremely persuasive when it comes to Molly Weasley. He’s agreed to take Harry, Ginny, and Ron on a little shopping spree before the fight. He said it was only fair that they have a little joy. He and Tonks and… Sirius… will be standing watch. He even volunteered me and Sev. And, of course, we’ll be bringing you and your boyfriend as well. It’ll be a little party.”
“How in the hell did she agree to that?” Draco asked suspiciously.
Melody frowned. “I believe some mangy mutt might have spiked her drink with a potion designed to enhance moods. Once a Marauder, always a Marauder.”
Hermione snorted. “Sirius Black could give Fred and George a run for their money.”
“Speaking of Fred and George, they’re meeting us as well.”
Hermione bit her lip. “Just how many people are going?”
Melody shrugged. “That’s it. Oh, and Ronald has decided to take Lav-Lav with him. Bleck.”
Hermione giggled. “Well, at least he’ll be in a sea of others and we won’t be able to hear him.”
Draco frowned. “What about Severus’s cover?”
Melody waved her hand. “That’s what glamours are for. Lavender will be drugged though.”
“What?” Hermione snapped.
“Relax,” Melody said authoritatively. “It won’t impair her judgment at all, just her ability to remember faces. It’ll be like looking through coke bottles when she tries to focus on anyone she’s not specifically introduced to. And, if she is introduced, her brain will produce the image she things they should look like. So, old Professors, no matter what they look like in reality, will look like her old Professors.”
Hermione huffed. “Fine. But I’m not so sure Ronald will be excited to see his little sister fucking his best friend in a mass of writhing bodies.”
Melody chuckled. “He’s getting a potion too, one targeted specifically so that he won’t see that portion of the evening. Well, at least not his sister’s involvement in it anyway. Now come on. Dad and Nancy are probably getting impatient.”
AN: I am queen of the cliffies. YAY. Anyway, I'm glad I could get this one out. I've seriously rewrote it about three times and each time I've hated it. I still hate it, but I couldn't keep it from you guys any longer. I know you're getting irritated with me. And as it is, I'm not sure Fooling Fate will be out tonight either, though I am going to try my best. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. I love them all. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys.
