Hermione tossed and turned, unable to get comfortable in her own bed. It had been so long since she’d actually slept in it that it felt foreign to her. The lack of Draco’s warmth was also a problem. When she had been unable to sleep before, she would snuggle into his chest and let the sound of his heartbeat lull her to sleep. Funny, how something usually overlooked had the power to calm all her thoughts. It was the sound of life, the continuous thudding that kept her sane.
Deciding she’d had enough, she quickly jumped up and dressed…warmly. She had a tendency to want to overdress for every occasion now. After casting a silencing spell on her shoes and cloak so no one would hear her, she ran downstairs and out into the hallway. Once there, she wasn’t really sure where to go. Snape wasn’t there to patrol, so she didn’t have to worry too much about being caught. Madam Pince warded the library after hours so she couldn’t go there.
She wandered around for a few minutes, startled when she ended up where the ROR was. Only, it wasn’t there. There was just a blank wall, no door, not even the tapestry of Barnabus the Barmy was there. Was she in the wrong place? She ran her hand along the stones to see if it was some sort of illusion and… whoosh. She screamed as her entire body was sucked through the wall.
“Couldn’t sleep?”
“Draco?”
“Guilty.”
Hermione sighed in relief and lit her wand to see Draco sitting up against the wall in the far corner, their corner. She sank into his lap, melting into his chest. This… this felt right. Her body relaxed despite the cold and she was finally able to let go of her anxiety.
“What brings you to the ROR?” Draco asked.
Hermione sighed. “Honestly, I tried to sleep but I just couldn’t get comfortable so I decided to go for a walk. I’m not really sure how I ended up here. You?”
“Remarkably, the same thing. I was cursing my luck when I got sucked in here but you came in right after. I wonder if we’ll be stuck here again.”
She shrugged. “I can’t bring myself to care at the moment.”
He chuckled. “Right now, neither can I. A soft bed would be nice though.”
The room shifted, replicating the scene they had on Christmas day. They shouted in joy and untangled themselves as quickly as they could. The soft sheets were more than welcome. It certainly beat the tiny hospital cot they’d been sleeping on and it was definitely a welcome change from the cold floor.
They were too tired to do much more than fall straight to sleep, secure in the knowledge that for the moment, the room was happy with them. It was enough.
Draco’s eyes flew open at the sound of elf apparition. They met the bulbous eyes of a frantic Dobby.
“Master Draco and Missy Mione must get up. They will be missed, they will.”
Hermione moaned at the interruption. “What time is it Dobby?”
“Nearly half past six ma’am.”
“Shit,” Draco barked, gently untangling himself from his lover before springing from the bed and dressing. “I’ve got to get to the dungeons and change before they realize I’m gone!”
“Dobby can take you.”
“Thank you Dobby,” Draco said before kissing Hermione softly. “Morning love. See you soon.”
Hermione rushed to put her clothes on as she tried to calm the sudden blush in her cheeks. She didn’t have the time to question Draco on his term of endearment before Dobby had winked them back to the dungeons. It made her feel all warm and tingly inside, like nothing she’d ever experienced before, not even when Ron had kissed her for the first time after she’d pined for him for years. No, this was much more profound but she’d have to think about it later.
She raced out the door, breathing a sigh of relief when it opened into the corridor, though the door wasn’t visible. Dumbledore must have placed some sort of protective spell on it. It didn’t seem to work on her or Draco though, and it made her wonder if the Headmaster hadn’t done that on purpose. There wasn’t time to dwell on it as she snuck in the common room. Thankfully there was no one about yet so she had a clear shot to the dorms.
After a whirlwind bout of getting ready, she rushed to the Great Hall. She was starving and more than a little anxious. Snape should have made contact with his daughter overnight. Would she be there with him that morning or would he keep her in his rooms? She was dying to meet Venus. Would Naomi be with them? Would he be absent as they reaffirmed their bond? She blushed from her roots when visions of Snape and Lily bombarded her mind. Perhaps it wasn’t good to think about that sort of thing.
She was disappointed and a little heartsick to see Snape breeze into the Great Hall. He looked like someone had punched him in the stomach and ripped out his heart. She was terrified that things hadn’t gone well for the vampire. He just couldn’t lose his family, too. Not when he’d worked so hard to keep them safe while being there for them.
“Hermione?”
She snapped her head over to her inquirer, Harry. He looked wary and very tired. Had he slept at all? She felt guilty, stabbing him with a quill and running. What must he think of her? Snape’s words from the previous eventing floated into her mind. Was he worried he was going to lose her as a friend?
“Um, can we talk…privately?”
Hermione nodded, snatching up a few pieces of toast and some bacon and tomato to make a sandwich with. No one was going to come between her and food for a very long time. Draco apparently felt the same way because she looked over just in time to see him smack Crabbe’s hand away from a delicious looking scone. She bit back a giggle and followed Harry to the nearest abandoned classroom.
Harry ran a hand through his hair nervously. “Look, I… I realize that I’ve been rather… um…”
“Annoying?” Hermione supplied. “Pig headed? Overbearing? Pushy? Belligerent? Stop me when I get it.”
Harry sighed. “All that and more, actually. I just… do you have any idea how terrified we were?”
Hermione snorted. “Really? You think being locked in a freezing room with your enemy and no food wasn’t scary? We were terrified that we’d die in there.”
Harry gulped. “You looked… cozy that day with Malfoy. And then the door banged shut and…”
Harry ran a nervous hand through his hair again and she took pity on him. “The room did that. It realized that emotions were getting the better of me and that I needed a while to regroup.”
“And Malfoy?”
Hermione pursed her lips, debating on what to tell Harry. Finally, she decided she’d had enough secrets. “He picked me up off the floor and held me while I cried it out.”
Harry’s face was incredulous. “Malfoy?”
“Yes Malfoy,” Hermione snapped. “He’s different Harry. He really is.”
Harry didn’t look convinced but for once, he let it go. “What happened to you in there Hermione? We all heard the horrible screams.”
“Oh Harry,” she sighed. “I’m not going to tell you that. And don’t bother trying to bully it out of Draco. We’ll take it to our graves. But it wasn’t anything painful, barring hunger and a little frostbite.”
Harry frowned. “Did he take advantage of you Mione? Because if he did-“
“Stop!” she commanded. “Whatever happened between us was mutual and I will not have you snooping about in our private business, Harry James Potter. Is that clear?”
Harry looked a little green. “So something did happen.”
“And if it did?” She growled.
He sighed and rubbed his eyes tiredly. “Does he make you happy?”
“Yes,” she answered honestly. “He really does.”
Harry pulled her in for a hug. “Then I guess I’m alright with it. He did save your life once. I’ll kill him if he hurts you though.”
Hermione giggled. “I wouldn’t expect anything less. And thanks Harry…for understanding.”
“Well, a greasy vampire told me I’d lose my friend if I didn’t grow up. I suppose he was right. I really am sorry Hermione. I didn’t mean to bully you about it, thought I could have done without the stabbing.”
She laughed and shook her head. “I really am sorry about that but you just wouldn’t shut up.”
“I think I’ve learned my lesson.”
“Now if you could just teach it to Ron.”
“He’s going to go bonkers when he finds out about Malfoy. You know that.”
“I know,” she said sadly. “I was kind of hoping that you’d reel him in.”
“I’ll do my best. Friends?”
“Forever Harry.”
