Falling into Destiny
Chapter Thirty-Seven
You let out a yawn as you reclined back into the blanket with a book splashed out over your stomach. The early autumn breeze rustled the grass and trees around you which only added to the relaxing atmosphere of the stone circle. There was something that put you at ease there; a sort of warmth in the stones, or at least a memory impression of warmth. It was almost like someone was singing a lullaby in the back of your head.
“There you are.”
Your eyes snapped open as the sound of Draco’s voice jarred you out of your near sleep state. You looked towards where he was coming from, broom and…
“You’re on the team?” You asked as you looked at the Quidditch robes he had on.
The self satisfied smile on his face could not have been any bigger. It wasn’t until you got close enough so that you could see the gleam on his broom, that you remembered you were supposed to be avoiding him. You shook yourself as you forced down your curiosity. The book, which has been resting comfortably on your stomach, fell as you started to stand up. When you went to roll up your blanket, however, Draco had one foot securely on it. You tugged wordlessly but he didn’t budge.
“Where were you over summer?”
“Home.”
Draco frowned at you as he gripped his broom tightly. “No you weren’t.”
“...I was at home with the Zabinis, Draco. Now can you get off?”
Draco rolled his eyes. He picked up his foot with such a dramatic movement that it was a wonder he wasn’t a performer. You rolled the blanket up as quickly as you could, moving forward even as you did that. Or at least you tried to. Draco kept stepping in front of you at every turn.
“What’s the rush?”
“I need to do my homework.”
“It’s Saturday. Your homework can wait an hour.”
You didn’t try to argue with him. Instead you simply tried to get by him once more. Draco stepped in front of you again which was beyond irritating.
“Stop that,” you snapped at him.
“Stop what?” He asked with the most annoying smile on his face. It was the one that let you know he knew that he was bothering you and he was somehow pleased with that.
“Stop blocking me,” you clarified.
“Stop running away,” he countered.
If you could have blown steam out of your nose you would have.
“I told you—I need to do my homework.”
“You’re a terrible liar.”
You shifted your stuff in your arms. You weren’t lying. You did need to do your homework. However it wasn’t the main reason you wanted to leave. You were trying to get away from Draco. The last thing you wanted was for Draco to do badly in his classes because he was being too stubborn. The amount that you got from being around him for long periods of times seemed paltry compared to what you knew you could take. Or at least what you knew you could take from others. So it wasn’t like he’d pass out after being around you for a few minutes. Most likely he’d only get to bed an hour or two early even if you were near him for a longer period of time. Even if it wasn’t a lot it was still more than you wanted to take from him - it wasn’t like he chose it and it wasn’t something you could stop. Though the boy didn’t seem to mind your parasite like tendencies, your aunt surely did. You could feel her judgement dripping down your spine as you stood in front of him without her having to be there.
“Auntie—“
“What did she say to you?”
“What?”
“Did she tell you to stay away?” Draco asked with something like an angry expression on his face.
“No,” you shook your head, reminding yourself that he didn’t want you wading through his head.
“Then why are you avoiding me?”
You stared over his head as you continued avoiding eye contact. You contemplated lying to him by saying that you weren’t avoiding him. No doubt Draco would see past the lie and call you out on it...not that you were truly lying the first time but…
“My nature is to take,” you explained quietly. “I can’t stop myself from taking from you when you’re around so I’ve been keeping my distance instead.”
“I told you that I would help you so you could come back home, didn’t I? What’s so hard to understand about that?” Draco demanded.
“It’s more complicated than before Draco.”
The air rose up; the stone circle around you seemed to do nothing to stop the wind. You felt it pushing at your cloak and at your hair. A good portion of which ended up slashed across your face. By comparison, Draco's hair stayed exactly where it was. You felt the desire to see just how stiff it was. When you realized that you were reaching out to touch his hair you stopped. What you were doing was almost the opposite from what you’d been meaning to do.
“It’s not. You’re just complicating it.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Why don’t you explain it to me?” He pressed as his tone approached mocking. “How I see it is that first you were forced to leave because you need my attention, then I try to do that so everything could go back to normal but you still won’t come home. Now you’re avoiding me? What could you possibly —“
You cut him off saying, “I need more than just attention, Draco.”
“Attention...affection, same thing.”
You shook your head. “No. No it’s really not. Not anymore.”
The look on his face demanded an explanation even if his voice didn’t. You sighed and tossed your blanket back out before sitting down. Without thinking too much about it, you motioned for Draco to sit down. He just stared down at you as though he couldn’t really see you.
“I told you — all I do is take. I take boys’ energy. What do you think happens when I take people’s energy? Do you think they are just completely okay?” You frowned as you tried to shift through the guilt with the reminder that at least it was an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Draco finally took a seat. He was in front of you as he sat on the ground. He had a serious look on his face for a twelve year old.
“I thought it was just Mother and I that could give you energy.”
“Give without having to be really affectionate, yes. You, Auntie, Momma and my Father. But I told you that I’ve been learning and practicing. I can take the energy I need now...and I can take more this year compared to last. I’ll probably be able to take more next year than right now. Blaise...let me...he helped for two years but I could see how much I took out of him. He would fall asleep randomly. It’s why I stopped letting Blaise help me, it’s partially why I’ve avoided you. The boys I visit in their dreams, they wake up still tired and can’t focus on class for the day. At least not without help. I don’t want you to get too tired to focus...and it’s why Auntie doesn’t want me near you…”
Other than the fact that she labeled you as a halfbreed the moment she found out you were a cambion of course. You could still remember the sensation of her fear and disgust as she dragged Draco away from you years ago. And how hartred had leaked out of her eyes over last winter break when she’d seen Draco in your bed.
“I told you that it’s my choice. Not hers.”
You frowned as you looked at his face for a moment. There was the sense of longing radiating from a time when he was laying on his back looking up through a tree. You smiled at the memory as it gave you a warm feeling inside. The image changed a little; he wanted to repeat what he’d done so innocently a couple of years ago. It felt all too natural to try to fill that desire. You folded one set of your fingers through his and inches forward. As you realized what you were doing you frowned and turned your head away. You’d been invading his mind without his consent, again.
“What’s wrong now?” Draco asked in an exasperated voice.
“Sorry,” you said with a frown as you readied yourself to get back.
“Sorry about what?”
“...I saw what you wanted,” you admitted.
“And what was that?”
He sounded so skeptical it was almost funny. Almost as though you hadn’t proved exactly what you could do a long time ago. Or maybe he didn’t really understand what was going through his mind.
“Remember that day when we went through the maze? When you told me that you’d help me so that I could come home and then we fell asleep under the tree.”
Draco nodded with a skeptical look in his eye. “So?”
“You wanted to do that again didn’t you?” The scuff you recieved made a faultering smile appear on your lips. “It’s a nice thought but it’s not a good idea.”
“I’m your husband aren’t I?”
“Yes,” you answered. “But were you listening to anything I just said?”
Draco rolled his eyes. You got the distinct impression that he didn’t care about what you said. You peaked around the stone circle and beyond as you brushed your hair out of your eyes. As far as you could tell there was no one near by, not even on the wooden bridge. Like every time before trying to explain things so he understood was pointless.
You leaned forward and stared into his eyes on purpose this time. He needed to learn why you were avoiding him. He needed to understand why auntie hated you. Then he’d stop trying to force you to come home.
“What are you doing?”
“Teaching you,” you whispered as your hands traveled up his arms.
You felt him pulling back. Before he got too far away you gently kissed him. You ran your hands up his arm to wrap around his face. And then you ran your hands through his hair as his energy started to slide into your body. Every inch of flesh you touched warmed yours, soothing and invigorating all at the same time. Draco went with you as you started leaning back. And you continued the gentle session until you and he laid side by side on the blanket. The stones around you hummed, almost pulsing.
Draco was breathing rapidly but deeply by the time you drew back. You could feel his warmth under your skin. It radiated in the area but stopped at the edge of the circle. You closed your eyes as you sat up so you didn’t see the fact that the grass around you had thickened. When you opened them once more they were glowing cyan. But so were the stones. They pulsed and swayed with the beat of yours and Draco’s heart.
Draco sat up with you. You forgot about the lesson you wanted to teach him as you looked around in wonder. The pulsing rose from the base of the stones to the top like a rising tide. By the fact that Draco looked around the stone circle with you, you could tell he could see it too. All the while your eyes continued to shine with an inhuman glow.
A shimmering figure of a man stepped through the barrier that started to rise up through the area. Ot first you thought Dumbledore had come to reprimand you for whatever magic was going on. But then the image of an old man faded by the second and you understood that it wasn’t Dumbledore. It was someone far more familiar than that.
“Father?”
You could see him smile. But then the figure faded. You stood up, reaching out in confusion, as the pulsing barrier faded. A thud filled your ears as Draco’s body hit the ground.
