Epilogue: Gone Like the Mist of Dawn
June 15th, 1998
Harry looked down at the pallid
face of his mentor. Poppy had been able
to remove some of the initial effects of the curse cast on Severus so that she
was at least able to view true vital signs, but the Sleep of Death remained
upon him. Not long after Poppy managed
to stabilize him, Severus’ appearance began to rapidly deteriorate. Now, though his shallow breathing gave away
the life within him, Severus looked ten days dead.
“I know he looks bad,” Poppy said gently, “but
his condition should remain stable as long as we keep renewing the containment
field around him.”
Harry ran a hand through his
mussed hair. “I don’t understand! I thought that the curse was only supposed to
make him appear dead…not actually kill him.”
“I’m afraid it’s my fault, dear,” Poppy
said. “A victim of the Sleep of Death
Curse is often mistaken for one done in by the Killing Curse. I noticed the few subtle differences that
will alert a medic that the victim is still alive. I…well I…”
Sirius stepped in for her
then. “Malfoy was careful. Someone must have been working in concert
with him. There was a strange –probably
experimental- spell entwined with Malfoy’s. It protected against tampering. When Poppy tried to remove the main curse it
triggered the failsafe, sending Severus into rapid degeneration.”
“So,” Harry said softly, “his life depends on
how quickly we can find Eris.”
Poppy touched his arm and said, “I
can keep him alive as long as it takes, Harry.
Right at this moment I can’t foresee anything happening that could…could harm him further. The curse itself actually sustains his body
now that I’ve managed to counter the secondary spell.”
Harry threw his head back and
stared at the ceiling. “The worst part
about this is that if we could get word out that Severus is still alive Eris
would be back here in a flash to help him.”
“I know,” Sirius said sadly. “But we can’t endanger him like that. The Ministry won’t even announce his being
pardoned until we can cure him. There
are too many people who will come after him, pardon or no.”
“Yeah, and the
remaining Death Eaters will be first in line,” Harry said bitterly. “To think, there was a time when I thought
killing Voldemort would be the end of all this.”
Sirius shook his head. “Don’t think like that, Harry. Voldemort’s death
was the end of his terror. You have to
look at this as the beginning of something new.
True, there are going to be dangers, but I’d say that we’re all better
equipped to handle them this time around.
Besides, we’re going to get your sister back here and…and your neice and nephew and then we’ll finally be able to be one
big happy family.”
Harry smiled and said, “And Eris
will have Sev fixed up in no time. She doesn’t know how to fail. Then I’ll have the pleasure of watching you
learn to share.”
Sirius returned his smile. “Even better, we get to watch Severus learn
to be a daddy.”
Harry smiled down at his mentor
then, a new sense of hope filing him.
All it would take was time.

Eris couldn’t help but feel a bit
mistrustful of the many elves currently surrounding her. They were pure beings, capable of only good,
so how could they possible condone her running away from her mate, with his son
no less? She saw Nanyin
approaching then and moved to stand.
Nanyin
motioned for her to remain seated.
“Please rest, Eris. You’ve had
several rough days, especially for one in your condition.”
Eris felt tears filling her
eyes. How could this person whose father
had died for her care at all if she was comfortable? “Thank you.
Naiya…she thinks this would be the best pace
for us for now.”
“Yes,” Nanyin said
with a nod of his head. “My sister has
explained to me that you need a retreat of sorts. Our colony is well hidden. No enemy or friend can find you here and none
of our number will betray your confidence.”
Eris shook her head. “How can you even want to help me?”
Nanyin
smiled kindly at her. “What my father
did is considered the greatest of sacrifices.
No one will lay blame for this.
We will miss him, but he lived a long and full life. Naiya says that he
was ready to be with our mother again.”
“That you for saying that,” Eris said
softly. “I don’t think I could handle
feeling as though one more death was on my shoulders.”
“Trust me, little sister,” Nanyin
said brightly, “this is paradise that you’ve come to and by the time you are
prepared to leave you will have a whole new perspective on life.”

March 12th, 1999, Nine months later…
Harry stood looking out across the
Back Lake,
smiling at the reflection of the rising moon.
He was thinking of his niece and nephew, who would now be about three
months old. He was thinking of all the
things they were probably learning to do…all the things that Remus and Roslyn’s
first child would be doing in a few short months. Their little girl was due to be born in
May. But, before Harry’s little
goddaughter (if he had anything to say about it) was born,
he was going to be a papa. Ginny was
currently carrying his and Draco’s first child, a boy, who would be born in
late April.
He felt a great deal of happiness
and peace when he thought about the impending arrival of his son, but there was
sadness as well. He wanted his son to be
able to grow up with his blood cousins, not just the “adoptive” family that
currently surrounded them. Until Eris
and the children returned, there would always be an emptiness
in his heart and he knew that the others felt it too. Thankfully, Ginny was proving to be an
excellent mentor and always seemed to know exactly what to say in order to calm
him and put his mind to ease. He had
felt both sadness and relief when he realized that Severus was no longer his
mentor and their connection as such had been broken. Yet, he still coud
sense Sev very faintly and everyone took this as a
sign that he had remained Eris’ mentor, especially since Ginny no longer felt
connected to Eris beyond sensing her through Harry.
“And what are you out here musing about now,”
called Draco’s voice softly from behind him.
Harry smiled as he felt his
lover’s arms slip around him. “I’m
thinking of all the beautiful children that are going to be running through Hogwarts and Grimmauld place once
Eris comes back. Can you picture is,
Dray?”
He felt Draco lightly kiss his
neck. “Our son, our niece and nephew,
the children of all our friends, all running about shrieking…thank god that’s
still a few years off. They can’t really
walk for the first year right?”
Harry chuckled. “Right, but they can still shriek. It will be wonderful.”
“I’m sure it will be,” Draco said
lightly. “I’m glad that Eris has help
with her little ones. Poppy says that
Severus is looking quite well. She’s
finally managed to reverse the initial degeneration completely.”
“He’s safe then,” Harry said with a sigh. “Now we just need Eris to come home. It be long now. Surly the children will make her see that she
needs to be with us.”
Draco squeezed him in a tight
embrace. “Or they may make her realize
that she needs even more time. Maybe
she’ll feel the need to just be with them, without all the drama of thinking of
who betrayed whom and all that rubbish.
You need to keep the possibility in mind.”
Harry smiled. “I know, but I just like to think
optimistically. Why don’t we go visit
Ginny and Blaise?”<br.
“Sounds wonderful,” Draco said with a bright
smile. “So tell me…do you think the
Weasley clan will ever forgive us for letting poor Gin talk us into having a
child before she finished at Hogwarts?”
Harry laughed.
“Trust me, Draco, Mrs. Weasley will forget that she was ever upset the
moment that she lays eyes on little James.”
“James?
I thought we agreed on Abraxas, after my
grandfather,” Draco said with a frown.
Harry quickly pulled Draco into a
deep kiss. After a few moments, he
pulled away slowly saying, “Let’s not argue about it now, Mr.
Malfoy-Potter. I want to go visit my
lovely mentor and her husband-to-be.”
Draco pouted. “Fine, but I at least want Abraxas to be his middle name.”
“I didn’t say a word,” Harry said with wide
eyes, “but since you’re offering…that sounds lie a deal to me.”
Draco simply rolled his eyes and
the pair made their way together back up to Hogwarts
and all the people they loved.

Not as
far away as Harry and the other might think, looking over a different lake at a
reflection of the same moon, was Eris.
She too was deep in thought.
Something was troubling her, even though most things in her life had
finally settled down. The “twins” were
past the hardest months and with all the help she was getting from Greg and Naiya…well, Eris thought she was getting off pretty
easy. They’d left Naiya’s
elven home, only two weeks after the children were
born, to come here, to the school, so that Eris could settle into a job and try
feeling normal for a while. She didn’t
know how long it would last, but she felt very lucky to have found a position
half way through the school year. She
had to admit, however, that she never once thought that she would find herself
teaching, let alone teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts…Potions maybe, but
never anything else.
“What are you doing out here all alone, lass?”
Eris turned to smile at Lorcan McArthy, the Arithmancy professor.
“Just getting a breath of fresh air. What are you doing out here…following me?”
Lorcan
smiled. “Well, it’s in my best interest
to keep an eye on you, as we’re both strangers in a strange land so to
speak. It’s nice to have a fellow
“islander” in the school. The last two
years have been rough on me.”
Eris chuckled. “So rough that Anna blushes whenever you
speak to her and her sister is always giving you the evil eye.”
Lorcan
looked sheepish. “Well, she’s a sweet
lass, but a wee bit younger than I’d like.”
“You’re not so old, Lorcan,
not more than thirty surely, and Anna is nearly ten years older than me.”
Lorcan
began to blush then. “Well, I still
prefer someone a bit older.”
Eris smiled brightly. “I see.
So its Miss Ekaterina
who’s caught your eye and you’re afraid to break her little sister’s heart by
making your interest known.”
“That would be it,” Lorcan
said softly. “Plenty of drama to be had
even here in the mountains.”
“There’s drama to be had anywhere you go, Lorcan,” Eris said, patting her newest friend’s arm. She’d grown quite fond of the Irishman in the
past three months. “I wouldn’t worry too
much about it. Ivan’s had his eye on her
and I think she’ll perceive his interest soon enough.”
Lorcan
chuckled. “You certainly have an eye for
these things, little Eris. Such a wise
one, you are, in spite of your being the youngest in this school. Why, you’re barely older than the oldest of
our students.”
“I feel ancient sometimes,” Eris said
softly. “I think I’ve just seen and felt
too much.”
“I’d say anyone with the last name of Potter
would feel that way,” Lorcan said gently.
Eris gave Lorcan
a sharp look. “But that’s not my name
and so it wouldn’t affect me.”
“Don’t try to lie to
me, lass,” Lorcan snapped. “I overheard you fighting with your elf
friend earlier this evening. You ought
to tell her to watch what she says in the halls. Students are not discreet creatures.”
“The question is can you be discreet about
it,” Eris asked carefully. “I don’t feel
like running any further. I’d much
rather nest here and rest my wings until I’m ready to go home.”
Lorcan
stared at her for a moment and then turned away to stare off across the
water. Eris held her breath and
waited. When he spoke again she could
barely hear him. “We’ve all heard rumors
since the end of the war…stories of the great Harry Potter and his long ost sister who was lost once again when the dust
settled. They say that people are
searching everywhere for you, people who love you.”
Eris smiled sadly. “I love them as well, but I need this time
for me. I’m asking you, as a friend, to
just keep this to yourself.”
Lorcan
smiled. “Of course, Eris, but you come
to me if you need someone to talk to. I
know a lot about being separated from family.”
“They’re quite unhappy with you for teaching
here, aren’t they,” Eris asked softly.
“Yes,” Lorcan
said. “Still, I knew that this school
needed fresh souls after the influence of that last bastard of a
headmaster. Headmaster Tervel is a good man and he’s worked hard the past few
years to improve the school’s reputation.”
“And we’ll all help him.”
“That we will,” Lorcan
said with a nod. “Now I’m off to my warm
bed. You should do the same soon, my
green-eyed beauty. Your little ones will
wake bright and early I’m sure.”
Eris silently watched as Lorcan walked back up to the school. She couldn’t honestly tell herself or anyone
else when she would return to England,
but something was telling her to stay in hiding. Deep in her soul she knew that the danger was
still out there somewhere in a new form, but her she was safe and so were her
children. She would content herself with
teaching students and loving her children for a few years and then it would be
time to return. Yes, the children needed
to be older, able to at least vaguely comprehend that there were dangers in the
world directly related to them.
It would feel like a long time in
coming for all those involved, but there would come a day for the return.
The End
________________________________________________________________________
Well, I can’t really believe that
this is over. Of course, its not completely
over because there’s still the sequel! I
want to thank all the readers who were just so wonderfully supportive while I
was writing this. Thank you for all the
reviews and encouragement. And to all of
you who read this in the future, please feel free to
leave a review and tell me what you thought of the story. I will be checking up on it from time to
time.
Keep your eyes out for the
sequel. I’m going to try and post the
first couple of chapters today, just as a taste for everyone. I won’t be able to update it very often with
all the other work I’m doing. I’m
writing my novel now and I have a few other fanfictions
I’ve been neglecting. Still, there’s
nothing to worry about, I will finish Eris’ story and, someday, she’ll get the
happy ending she deserves.
Thanks again to everyone and I
hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it.
Hugs, AuctorRubra
