No One Comes When You Cry
Chapter 38 When the Hope is Gone
!!!WARNING: Some readers may find this chapter upsetting.!!!
It was dark when Severus finally opened his eyes to find himself sitting in the study. ‘Had he fallen asleep?’ He must have done. Then he remembered Sky; Sky and her magic fingers. He wiped a small trickle of drool from his chin as he sat upright, expecting his head to pound and his shoulders to ache or his neck to crick. When none of those things happened, he was pleasantly surprised. This massaging lark was good, very good.
Then he noticed his wife curled up in a ball on the chair opposite. She was fast asleep with her knees drawn up almost to her chin and her hands tucked under the side of her cheek. Her hair hung soft and shiny over one of the armrests and her toes just peeped round the edge of the other one. Her eyelids were fluttering and she was talking in her sleep, but he could not make out the words. Moving onto the floor he sat in front of her chair, placing his ear next to her mouth to hear her better.
“Fat.” She mumbled. “Not good. How old?” A few other words he could not make out. “Hide it. Yuck.”
He could not help the grin on his face as he wondered what she was dreaming about.
“What do you wish to hide?” He whispered in her ear.
“Fat. Hide fat. Ugly.”
“What is ugly?” He whispered, enjoying this new game.
“Sky. Sky ugly. Get fat. Hide it.”
Severus was not enjoying this game any more. Placing his fingers on her temple, he whispered “Legillimens.”
He was shocked when he pulled out of her mind. “Bloody hell.” He mumbled as he got shakily to his feet. He paced the room a few times, stopped and looked at her, paced again and stopped to look again.
“Bloody fucking hell.”
The pacing, stopping, staring and quiet cursing went on for another half hour before he stilled, picked her up and took her into the bedroom. She stirred slightly and wrapped her arms around his neck, nestling into him while he carried her. He had to prise her hands from him when he laid her on the bed. Her fingers were clasped together and he was bent double as he tried to reach and separate them. Using his wand, he undressed her before sitting on the bed and looking her over. She looked the same as she always did, not fat at all, but the dream.
“Bloody fucking hell.” He muttered again as he removed his own clothes and climbed into bed with her. Instead of pulling the covers up, he studied her for a while longer. ‘Just a dream.’ He told himself. ‘She is just having a dream. Nothing more.’ She snuggled up to him as he covered them up. He cuddled her until he drifted back off.
“Oooo!” Sky stretched as she started to wake. “What time is it? I don’t remember coming to …” She turned to find an empty place beside her in the bed. Assuming he was either in the bathroom or the study, she forced herself to get up and padded through to use the loo and have a wash. Once she was dressed, she went into the study to find that empty too. After checking the labs and his office and classroom, she headed off to breakfast, meeting Severus as he stepped off the main staircase.
“I’ve been looking for you. You didn’t wake me.”
“Well I’m here now and you are clearly awake. Breakfast?”
“Yeah. Dunno about the awake bit though. I’m shattered. What time did we go to bed. I can’t even remember going.”
“That is because I carried you through after you fell asleep in the chair.”
“I remember sitting down. You were asleep at the time.”
“I was not.”
“Yes you were.”
“I was merely resting my eyes.”
“You were snoring.”
“I was not.”
“Yes you were. And you dribbled.”
“I do not dribble.” He hissed. “Anyway, you talk in your sleep.”
“Yes you do. What do I say?”
“How would I know, I do not take any notice.” He told her, his face neutral as they sat down.
After breakfast, Severus went to teach his classes and Sky went of to find Hagrid. She froze when Fang came lumbering up to her. All of her creature lessons had been theory, she’d never actually met a live animal before and this one was big.
“Fang. Come ‘ere yer great lummock. Don’ be frightened of ‘im. ‘E won’ ‘urt yeh.”
The dog started licking her hand, she looked down disgusted as it slobbered all over her fingers. “Urgh that’s horrible.”
“Yeh get used to it. Mrs. Snape innit? Did yer want summat lass?”
“Yeah. Severus said you might have some work for me. I’ve got nothing else to do and I’m bored. Have you got anything I can help with?”
Hagrid looked at her and scratched his head. “Well thing is, mos’ of what I got is ‘eavy work. You’re on’y a little thing.”
“It doesn’t matter. Please Hagrid.”
He studied her. He felt mean turning her away. “Tell yer what. I’m about ter teach class. ‘Ow about yer come back after lunch an I’ll see what I can find.”
“Class. Can I watch? I wont get in your way, I promise.”
“Erm, I suppose, can’t see what ‘arm it’ll do. C’mon then.”
She followed him round the back of his hut, Fang still trying to lick her hands while she kept wiping the drool onto her jeans, which were soon drenched. Getting annoyed with the dog, Sky made sure Hagrid wasn’t looking and snapped her fingers. Fang turned and headed for the hut, lay down and went to sleep. Sky continued to follow Hagrid, pretending not to notice that Fang was no longer bothering her.
“Oh Hagrid what’s that?” She walked over to the edge of a pen and looked in at the large beastie.
“Blast ended skrewt. It’s me last one. Beauty aint she?”
“Mm. She’s different. I’ve never heard of them.”
“No you wont ‘ave. Anyway come on. Class’ll be ‘ere soon.”
They reached a paddock at the edge of the forest.
“Oh you’ve got a Re’em.” “’Ow did you know that? We’ve never done ‘em before. In fact, this is the firs’ in the whole country.”
“I’ve never seen a real one. Just pictures. Where did you get this one? North Africa or the Middle East?”
“None of them. I got from the friend of a friend of a bloke I met down the pub. But yeh keep that ter yerself right.”
“Okay.” She frowned as she worked out the connection.
The classes started to arrive. “Fifth year Gryffindor/Slytherin. Righ’ you lot. Stand over ‘ere. I don’ want any of yeh getting too close ter the fence. Bess ‘ere, she’s a bit flighty see.”
“Hagrid.” Sky whispered.
“What?”
“Bess? It’s a male.”
“Is it? I never noticed. Never mind. As I was sayin, Bert ere is a bit flighty, so I want yer all to do as I say. Can anyone tell me what it is?”
“A golden ox.” Said a Gryffindor girl.
“Kinda. It’s a Re'em. Does anyone know where it comes from?”
“It’s mother.” Snorted a Slytherin.
Sky scowled at the dark haired boy but he took no notice.
“Maybe Mrs. Snape would like to tell yeh. Mrs Snape?”
Her head shot up to look at Hagrid. She’d thought she was only going to watch.
“Err, yes alright. North Africa and the Middle East.” She looked down again, her face reddening as the students looked in her direction. ‘Say something quick Hagrid. Make them look at you instead.’
Hagrid gave her a nudge and nearly knocked her on her face. “Carry on Mrs. Snape. Yer got their attention now. Tell em what yer know about the Re'em.”
‘Bugger.’ She wasn’t ready for this. But they were all looking at her, waiting for her to say something.
“Erm, not a lot. As I said, they’re normally found in North Africa and to a lesser extent, the Middle East. The golden hide is unique to the Re'em. No other bovine, magical or muggle has a hide this colour. The hide is not suitable for tanning as it doesn’t hold its colour once the beast is dead. The horns of the bull Re'em can grow as long as six feet at either side, and it knows how to defend itself with them. But the cow Re'em horns can grow to seven or eight feet. They are not a creature you’d want to tangle with.
The most valuable part of a Re'em is it’s blood. More so the bull. It’s very difficult to come by, and if prepared correctly in a potion can give the imbiber immense strength. However the blood can be harvested in small amounts without causing any harm to the animal. But only if you know what you’re doing. Re'em’s are not very approachable. The safest way is to offer them fresh chicken, they love that. But they’ll only stay docile for as long as they’re eating. When the chickens gone, watch out.”
Some of the students clapped while others gave her small cheers. Yet others stared at her or the Re'em fascinated.
“Erm Hagrid. That’s all I know.”
“What? Oh righ’. Well you did really well. You’ve tol’ ‘em everything they need ter know. How about yer show em how to approach it now.” He leaned in to whisper to her. “I ‘aven’t bin able to get near it yet.”
“But I’ve never done it Hagrid. I only know what I’ve read about them.”
But Hagrid wasn’t listening. He’d gone to fetch a bucket filled with fresh chicken. “Ere yeh go lass, show em ‘ow it’s done.”
Sky turned pale as she took the bucket and looked at the snorting beast.
“He doesn’t look too keen on this Hagrid.”
“He’ll be fine. Yer know what yer doing, I trust yeh.”
‘Bugger. Bugger. Bugger.’ All the students were looking at her expectantly now and she was ready to shit herself. “Bugger.” She muttered as she made her way over to the paddock. “Bugger and double Bugger.”
Some of the students snickered when they heard her swear. They thought it was funny that Professor Snape’s wife said something like that.
But they were in awe of her too. They thought she was either very brave or very stupid to go near that thing. Most of them thought brave.
Sky thought stupid.
Dangling the bucket in front of her, she reached the fence and looked at the bull. “Buuuggerrr.” She almost sang, as the bull approached, the smell of the chicken reaching its nostrils.
Hagrid leaned across and opened a gate Sky hadn’t even seen.
“Hagrid. What are you doing? I’m not going in there.”
“Course yer are. Look at ‘im gentle as a lamb.”
In the staff room. most of the Professors were laughing. When Severus arrived for his mid morning coffee and heard them, he felt like turning round and going to his rooms instead. Unfortunately Minerva caught his eye and called him over.
“Severus you won’t believe this. Hagrid has only gone and got himself a Re'em.”
“Really. And why should that concern me?”
“Oh come on Severus. We just thought it was funny that’s all. He’s showing it to his fifth year class as we speak.”
“Really.” He said uninterested. He took his usual seat, picked up his coffee and read his newspaper.
Sky stepped carefully and slowly into the paddock, her eyes on the bull as she waved the bucket enticingly. “Hagrid I don’t like this.”
“Ah you’ll be fine. Look, ‘e likes yer.” Hagrid believed what he was saying. He had a proclivity for dangerous beasts., thinking they were sorely misunderstood and only need a bit of kindness to bring out the good in them.
“No he doesn’t Hagrid.” She ground through her teeth. “He likes the chicken, and I’m the one holding the bloody chicken. I want to come out. Open the gate.” She was too scared to take her eyes from the bull as it came nearer and nearer.
The bull snorted loudly and she panicked. With a scream, she tossed the bucket aside and turned to run out the gate but it was still closed and the bull, sensing her fear forgot the chicken and charged at her. Sky only managed to get one foot onto the bottom rail of the fence.
Severus threw his coffee cup across the room when one of his Slytherin fifth year boys barged into the room in tears, almost screaming. The only words he heard were Mrs Snape and Re'em as he ran from the staff room and out of the castle before anyone even realised what was wrong. He ran faster than he’d run in his life as he made for Hagrid’s hut.
“Nooo!” He wailed as he got closer and saw a huddle of students crying and screaming. Some were bent over being sick and he could hear Hagrid shouting something. When he rounded the end of the hut he skidded to a stop, the sight before him making him want to scream himself hoarse.
Hagrid, covered in blood was throwing something to the Re'em, trying to coax it away from something else that was hanging over the fence. Something that looked like a large piece of meat. A piece of meat with arms and long blonde hair.
“Nononononononono.” He staggered forward, not wanting to know but needing to see if it was her.
“Don’ touch ‘er Professor. Ye’ll do ‘er more ‘arm then good if yer try an’ move ‘er.”
Severus looked at Hagrid as though he thought the man mad.
“What? I have to move her. I have to.” He choked. “Sky. My beautiful, beautiful Sky. My wife. My love. My life.” He cried, collapsing to his knees in front of her.
He never heard the other Professors as they ran towards them, did not hear Albus or Poppy or the emergency medi-staff who’d been called from St. Mungo’s. All Severus knew was that Sky, his Sky, was hanging over a fence looking like something from a muggle abattoir. He could do nothing but watch as the medical team grouped round her, blocking his view.
All he could do was kneel on the ground and stare blindly as Albus and several others tried to get him to come back to the castle, but he would not move. Even when Albus lowered the wards and the medi-staff apparated away with his wife he knelt there, still seeing her hanging like a piece of beef fresh from the slaughter.
Eventually Albus had to cast immobulus on him, followed by mobillicorpus, so they could take him back to the castle. He was taken to the infirmary and Poppy tucked him into a bed and placed the privacy screen around him. She scanned him with her wand and found nothing wrong.
“He’s in shock Albus, there is nothing I can do for him. He needs to come out of it himself.”
“I know Poppy. Seeing her that way was just too much for him. Did he come to see you this morning?”
“Yes. Do you know why?”
“I do. He came to see me straight after he left you. He is desperate to know.”
“I was hoping to persuade her to come and see me this evening. I do not suppose there is much point now. There’s no way that …”
“There is always hope Poppy. There has to be.”
They spoke in hushed whispers, though it would not have made any difference if they were shouting from the towers. Severus heard and saw nothing but the vision of his wife as he found her behind Hagrid’s hut.
“I have to see to the students Albus. All the ones that witnessed it are in a terrible state.”
“Yes, yes, go on Poppy. I shall sit with Severus. Minerva is at St. Mungo’s. She has promised to let us know if anything …well she will contact us.”
Poppy went to see to her other patients and Albus sat on a chair beside his Potions Master. Taking the younger man’s hand in his own, he brought it to his forehead and prayed. Albus prayed to every known deity, both wizard and muggle, to help Sky and Severus. He was startled out of his prayers when Minerva came flying out of the floo.
“Severus. Where is he Albus?”
“Through here Minerva.”
“Oh my, what is wrong with him Albus/”
“He is in shock. Any news Minerva?”
“Yes. And it’s not good. He has to come to the hospital Albus, and he has to come now.”
The old Headmaster paled at her words. “He will not respond to us Minerva.”
Minerva was too distressed to listen and slapped Severus across the face.
“Get up you great bism. Your wife needs you, she’s dying.” She hit him again. Severus.” She shouted. “This is your only chance to say goodbye to her.”
Something flickered in Severus’ brain. It wasn’t the pain from the hard slaps Minerva gave him, nor was it Albus trying to calm her down, it was one word. ’Goodbye.’
“NO! I will not say goodbye.” He roared. “Sky. Don’t you dare leave me. Don‘t you dare.”
He shot from the bed and ripped the privacy curtain down, heading for the floo.
“Severus wait.” Albus told him. “We are coming with you, put your shoes on.”
“Fuck the shoes Albus.” He grabbed the floo powder and threw it into the fire. “St. Mungo’s.” With a poof he was gone.
Albus and Minerva followed, Albus carrying Severus’ shoes. At the hospital the doctors had frantically tried to repair the damage done to Sky by the angry Re'em. Her spinal cord was ripped in two, most of her ribs were smashed, her lung and one kidney were pierced and her spleen had to be removed, damaged beyond even magical repair. Her bowels had been mangled and her heart was failing fast.
“Where the hell is her husband?” One of the doctors shouted. “He should be here.”
No one answered as they were all busy trying to repair various parts of her ravaged body. Severus arrived at St. Mungo’s looking like someone who escaped from an insane asylum.
“Where is she?” He demanded from anyone and everyone willing to listen. “Where is my wife?” When he didn’t get an answer, he grabbed the receptionist by the scruff of the neck and hauled her over the desk.
“Where is my wife?” He demanded again.
The woman was terrified and couldn’t answer him. Luckily Albus and Minerva arrived.
“Severus. Put her down boy.” He said gently.
Severus looked at him, incomprehension written on his face. “What?”
“Let the young lady go, you are frightening her.”
Severus turned to look at the woman he was almost choking, he was holding her collar so tightly. His mouth fell open as he released his grip.
“They won’t tell me where she is Albus.”
“I know where she is Severus, follow me.” Minerva persuaded him gently.
Severus followed her like a puppy, his head down as she took his arm and led him down a corridor. When they reached the emergency room he looked through a small window in the door. The flurry of activity going on around the bed alerted him to the fact that it was his wife they were bustling round, and he was standing here doing nothing. What could he do?
“Why am I here?” He asked Albus.
Albus laid a hand on his shoulder. “You need to say goodbye Severus. I am sorry.”
Severus looked at him as if he were insane. “Why would I want to say goodbye. I am not going anywhere.”
“No, you are not, but Sky is. She is dying Severus.”
“No.” He shook his head. “She cannot die, she’s my world Albus, she cannot die.”
“Severus …”
But Albus did not get a chance to finish his sentence as Severus stepped into the room. The medics looked round and stood back so he could approach the bed.
“Sky. Sky can you here me? Answer me Sky.” When she didn’t respond he looked round to the doctors. “Why wont she answer me? What have you done to her?” “Sky. Wake up. I order you to wake up.”
Her eyelids gave the slightest flicker and stilled. Someone placed a chair next to him and he sat down, taking her hand and bringing it to his lips.
“You cannot leave me wife. I need you. I love you more then life itself. Please stay with me. Please.”
Severus didn’t hear the sobs in the room as some of the staff cried at the sight of the severe looking man breaking down at his wife’s bedside.
“She moved.” He cried. “She’s going to be alright. I know it. She squeezed my hand.”
“I am sorry Mr. Snape. It is an involuntary reaction. It does not mean anything.” The doctor told him. “There is nothing more we can do.”
“You’re wrong. I know you’re wrong. There has to be something.” Severus told him in a pleading, guttural voice.
“If there was we would have done it.”
“How long?”
“Pardon?”
“I asked you how long?” Severus was barely holding in his emotions now.
“We’re not sure, an hour, maybe two.”
