Chapter 38
Severus watched from the shadows of a great oak, disillusioned, silent. He watched as Paula put the students through their paces, bringing them to a state of near collapse, and even then taking pot shots at them, forcing them to take cover as they dodged hexes while trying to protect the younger, less experienced among them.
A couple of times he’d had to move quickly to avoid deflected curses. At one point Melissa Mendez, the young Hufflepuff, had been standing right beside him, gasping for breath as she redirected a diffendo hex from hitting Blaise Zabini.
‘A Hufflepuff defending a Slytherin? Dear Gods.’ He thought, only to be interrupted when a white swallow patronus whipped past him, skimming his shoulder as it passed. He wondered what possessed him to rise at such an ungodly hour on a Sunday morning when it was not necessary.
Normally Paula would have sensed Severus’ presence immediately, but she was so involved with trying to outsmart the students that she did not realise at first. Only when she sent her own patronus out to distract Coryn Parkins and Ginny Weasley did she feel his presence at it ran by the tree he was lurking behind.
Paula smiled inwardly that he was at least nearby, even if he did not wish his presence to be known.
Severus gloated over the fact that Paula had no idea he was there. ‘So much for her innate senses.’ He thought.
Knowing he would be irritated if she let on about sensing him, Paula dismissed the students and whistled for Riley.
As soon as he arrived, the great beast sent her an image of the Potions Master standing hidden behind a large tree.
“Hai Riley, I’ve dicked him. (Yes Riley, I’ve seen him)
Remember, may mishto les o thud katar i gurumni kai tordjol” (Remember, it is easier to milk a cow that stands still) She whispered to the horse.
Severus knew she was talking to her horse, but he was unable to translate what she said.
“I am going to bathe but the centaurs are not happy with me. Will you keep a look out Riley?”
Riley nodded and followed her to the deeper part of the stream where it widened and the waterfall cascaded down over the rock face high above.
Severus followed at a distance, still disillusioned and still believing he was undetected.
Making himself comfortable, he leaned back on a large boulder and watched as Paula undressed. He did not think there was anything wrong in watching her, he’d seen her bathe before after all.
Paula had just unclipped her bra and thrown it to the ground when an arrow flew passed her head. Too close for comfort.
She threw herself to the ground while Riley neighed loudly and reared on his hind legs, his eyes rolling in their sockets.
That arrow was rapidly followed by another and another.
Severus felt the rumble of hoof beats as he stood and looked about, wand at the ready. Just as the first centaur came through the trees and Severus raised his wand. Before he could fire a spell, Riley thundered past him, arrows and spears seeming to bounce off his leathery winged coat as he charged at the now herd of centaurs who in turn were heading straight for the stream and Paula.
The centaurs did not even get close as Riley opened those massive leathery wings. The great beast beat them mercilessly against the centaurs, sending many rolling onto their backs, limbs flailing wildly as they tried to regain their footing. Still beating his wings, Riley proceeded to rear up and trample the fallen, injuring them badly but not killing them. He whinnied and neighed, only the whites of his eyes showing as he foamed at the mouth. He bit and kicked any that dared to come too close, until eventually they backed off. Riley stood panting and snorting wildly as the centaurs that could, gathered the injured and retreated into the darkness of the Forbidden Forest.
Severus’ disillusionment charm had worn off in the shock of the centaur attack and he instinctively stepped forward to see if Paula was alright. He’d been prepared to fight the centaurs to protect her, but Riley had beaten him to it and done such a good job that Severus did not get a chance to fire a single hex.
Riley was still wound up and the sudden appearance of Severus sent him rearing onto his hind legs again just as Paula reached up to him.
Severus stared slack jawed in shock when she grabbed the roped halter, even as he was rearing in front of her. Not knowing what to do for the best, he waited, wand in hand as she crooned to the beast, speaking softly in Romane as she had to the dragon that day at the Welsh sanctuary.
“Nais tuke Riley. Isda! Isda! You are Chinga-guero” (They are gone. See. See. A warrior.)
He vaguely remembered Paula telling him at some stage that Riley would never harm her, but still he watched with bated breath as she calmed the animal. He could not help thinking she looked magnificent in her present state. She wore nothing but a deep red thong, her dark skin glistened, muscles lightly defined as she focussed her eyes on Riley. Her hair, still tied in a high ponytail from her earlier exercise swung heavily side to side until at last Riley was soothed. Paula stroked him, walking round him as she did, running her hands down his neck, over his heaving back and sides, to his flanks. Stepping beneath him she worked her way to his head from the other side, talking to him constantly, thanking him, praising him, letting him know what a wonderful, friend he was for protecting her.
“Hello Severus. Sar san?”
Suddenly realising he had revealed himself, he glowered at her, turned and walked away without a word.
“He’s avree (away) again Riley.”
Paula hurried with her bathing while Riley kept watch. They were not bothered any further by the centaurs but neither was prepared to take the risk.
“I do not know how many there were kak, only that they wanted my blood. Had it not been for Riley I would have been mullered.”
“I will speak to them again, find out why they suddenly turned on you when they had already agreed to let you be.”
“No, leave them. They have their reasons and I cannot let you risk meeting with a herd of angry centaurs. Riley did them much damage kak, more than half of their herd was injured quite badly. I think they were more disturbed than they expected to be, what with me and the students running around the wavver so freely. I will find somewhere else to train the students, even if it means taking them off the grounds and into the hills.”
“Have you spoken to Severus yet?”
“No, he needs time to cool off. He is still angry with me. If he does not seek me out by the weeks end, I will go to him.”
