The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 38
After he ignored her offer of a handshake, Lucy was more than willing to give the cold-shoulder treatment to her professor, and she pretended not to notice when Maxi immediately trotted over to the dark wizard.
‘Go on Maxi, slobber all over him.’ She thought.
Maxi however did not. Since that evening Severus had befuddle the dog, and later spoken with authority, Maxi treated him with respect and merely stood, waiting for the wizard to acknowledge him. Much to Lucy’s annoyance.
Lucy was even more put out when wine was served with the dinner, and she was not allowed any. Instead she was forced to settle for pumpkin juice, while the three adults happily made their way through several bottles.
The conversation was soon steered to Voldemort and Lucy blanked out for most of it. As yet she did not really understand the magnitude of devastation the despot had caused and she was wondering if there would be any fit blokes starting school today, but her ears pricked up when her name was mentioned.
“At the moment he merely wishes for Miss Grindelwald to be observed, and alliances made with certain families.” Severus commented. “Though this will change as time moves on. I am afraid the name Grindelwald is synonymous with power and supremacy in the dark Lords book, as such he is determined she be… groomed, to be advantageous to his crusade.”
“Wait a minute, nobody’s grooming me for anything thank you very much. I’m my own person.”
“Indeed you are Miss Grindelwald, but in the higher spectrum of things to come, we must all play our parts if we are to succeed in defeating Voldemort.” Albus said sadly.
“But you said I wouldn’t have to do anything when you made me join your Order thing. You said I could carry on as normal.”
“That was before he took an unhealthy interest in your welfare Miss Grindelwald. Situations change all the time, and we must all learn to adapt with it.” Severus told her.
“Yeah, like sucking up to some jumped up little toff who insults me in a bookshop. I don’t think so Professor.”
“I assume you are referring to Mr Malfoy? The boy believes what he has been brought up to believe, his family has primed him all his life in the belief that Malfoy’s are better than anyone else. He is a product of his lineage Miss Grindelwald, as is his father, and many generations before him, none have taken the trouble to correct his assumptions of incomparability.”
“Well I hope you don’t expect me to start teaching him. I’m not playing nursemaid to the little… “
“Lucy, that is enough.” Hetty scolded. “We none of us like the situation, but we are forced to deal with it as it happens. And that includes you playing your part.”
Totally pissed off, Lucy glowered at the three adults, then in true Snape style she stood and stormed from the room. They heard her footsteps as she marched up the stairs to her room.
“Let her be Hetty.” Albus said softly when Hetty stood to go and admonish her granddaughter. “It is a lot for her to take in.”
“That is no excuse for rudeness Albus, and I will not accept it from her. That girl is truly wild at times.”
“I know, but her spirit must not be broken, there may come a time when it will serve her well.”
Severus and Hetty both gave the older wizard withering looks, but neither argued the point.
Lucy stomped back and forth in her room, hopping mad at her situation. How the hell did she get stuck in the middle of all this? It wasn’t fair. If it wasn’t for gran, Lucy decided she would go back to Manchester and hide herself. Away from all this stupid madness.
Eventually she calmed down enough to make her way back downstairs, then flop onto the sofa, listening to her grans voice from the kitchen. Fortunately she missed the last topic of their conversation, had she heard it, most likely Lucy Grindelwald would have fainted with shock.
Severus himself had been close to hyperventilating. He could not believe that Madam Grindelwald had brought up the subject of his apparent suitability as a companion for her granddaughter. After losing his temper, and reminding her he was a Hogwarts Professor, he was even more shocked at Hetty’s revelation that Albus himself had an affair with one of his teachers when he was a young man.
Albus too was put out at Hetty’s disclosure of his past, but he was unable to deny it and shamefacedly admitted that it was true.
“Is this the reason I am here, so the two of you can try and pair me up with… with. I do not believe this.” Severus hissed, his eyes glittering with rage.
“Calm down boy, it’s not the main reason you are here, I only brought it up because, well you know her situation, and I would feel much happier knowing she was under your protection, rather than have the Malfoy brat chasing after her. Or any other Death Eater offspring for that matter.” Hetty said.
“You forget Madam Grindelwald, I too am a Death Eater.” He reminded her, pulling up his sleeve and revealing the skull and serpent. “Nor am I a young boy, and I would appreciate it if you would stop referring to me as such.”
“No Severus, you are not a true Death Eater, but you do have Voldemorts ear. Surely he would prefer someone who has already proven himself a loyal supporter take up with my granddaughter, rather than an untried little sprog who as yet has no will of his own. Lucy is not averse to you Severus, you must have noticed. Nor do I want you think that I am happy with the situation as it is, I would prefer she not have these… urges, at all, but I cannot change what is and would prefer to have some I trust hold sway over her, rather than risk her becoming embroiled with some… oh you know what I mean.”
“Whether I have noticed or not is not the issue Madam, what is the issue is that she is still a child, and one of my students. Never in all my time at Hogwarts, have I even considered the pathetic attempts at flirtation occasionally sent my way by misguided students, and I do not intend to start now.”
The upshot was, that Severus refused to have anything to do with Hetty‘s, or a slightly reluctant Albus’ wish that he encourage Lucy in his direction, just as he refused to admit to them that he did desire the young woman, regardless of how many times he tried to deny it himself. In true Lucy style, he got up from the table and stormed from the house, apparating the moment he was through the wards.
Unable to make out the conversation, Lucy stood up and edged quietly towards the door that separated the living room from the kitchen.
“You may as well come in Lucy, the devil never hears good when listening at doors.” Hetty called out.
Lucy’s eyebrows disappeared behind her fringe. “I wasn’t listening, I was about to come and get a drink of water.” She lied. “Where’s Professor Snape?” She asked warily.
“He left, in much the same way you did when you stormed from the room.”
“Why, what’s up with him?”
“Professor Snape will be fine Miss Grindelwald, nothing you need concern yourself with.” Albus told her with a warning look at Hetty. “Are you almost ready to go?”
“No, but I never will be. I want to stay here with gran.”
“Is your room tidy Lucy?”
“Yes gran.”
“No dirty clo… “
“No gran nothing, it’s almost as it was when I first arrived. Honest.”
“Speaking of clothes, Hetty, I wonder if you would do me a great service?” Albus asked. “We have in our midst’s an elf, once belonging to Barty Crouch. Due to a misunderstanding she was given clothes and now resides in the Hogwarts kitchens. She has not settled in at all well, I was hoping you would accept her, give her a reason to feel needed again. I am sure if someone were to give her a purpose in life, she would rise to the occasion.”
“Albus I have managed for years without the need of a house elf. Had I required one, I am more than able to acquire one of my own.”
“I know that, but I am asking you as a dear friend, to help this little creature.”
Hetty sighed. “Alright, send her tomorrow and I’ll see how we get along. But I’m warning you, if she gets on my nerves, I’m sending her back immediately.”
“Thank you Hetty, I am certain she will be of great service to you. Miss Grindelwald, shall we?”
Lucy hugged her gran tightly, reluctant to let go until the old witch complained of not being able to breathe.
“Sorry gran.” Lucy said tearfully. “You’ll call me if you… if you don’t feel well or anything.”
“I’ll be fine, now off you go and get settled into that school. I want a full report of your week when you return at the weekend. And please, hold that temper of yours.”
“I will gran, promise. Where’s my bags?”
“They are already at Hogwarts my dear, I sent them shortly after arriving.” Albus informed her as they walked out the door and headed down to the front gate.
“Bye gran.” Lucy called tearfully one last time before the Headmaster apparate them to the gates of Hogwarts.
“Headmaster, was that true about the elf, or are you as worried about gran as I am?”
“Both. I believe that between them, your grandmother and Winky will help each other. I hope it will also put your own mind at rest, I know you are worried about her alone in that house. Now, shall we?” Albus unlocked the gates and they walked through.
Lucy stepped through and considered the old wizard for a moment. “Thank you Headmaster. For the elf I mean, I was worried about gran, still am actually, but at least she wont be on her own all the time. Do you think she’ll let the elf stay?”
“She will have no choice, I intend to instruct Winky to bind herself to the Grindelwald family.”

Okay, the keyboards pretty fired up at the moment, so I’m posting more chapters than usual. Can’t promise it will last though.
Please keep up the reviews. The more you give, the more I want to write.
