Chapter Thrity-Eight: Sanguinum Luna (Bloodthirsty Moon)
James’ eyes widened as the snout of the huge werewolf appeared from the hole, sniffing. He gasped and leapt forward without a single thought about his own safety, he reached Snape and grabbed the scruff of his robes before yanking him roughly backwards. The wolf leapt at the same moment but sailed right over their heads. Snape yelled and scrambled backwards. His black eyes turned to James. “He’s a-” He was cut off as something large and heavy slammed into his side.
James watched the Werewolf pacing a few yards back, he had expected to see him tearing Snape to shreds but he wasn’t. He turned back to the base of the Willow and saw Padfoot crouching protectively over Snape’s whimpering form. He had his head covered and his body shook violently as Padfoot faced down the enraged wolf. James watched in horrified fascination as the Wolf advanced, his body language was dominant and ordinarily Padfoot would have given way beneath him but not tonight, Padfoot’s tail rose over his back, his ears were flat against his head as he growled menacingly. “Pad’s...Pad’s...Sirius no!” James screamed as the Wolf leapt...
The two canines met in a furious ball of claws, teeth and flying fur. James’ eyes widened as he sat there, unable to move as terror held him frozen. There were yelps, screams and blood spattering the floor. His eyes moved to see that Snape was limp, he had passed out. The canine’s snarls were horrific, James winced as the Wolf batted Sirius aside and once again tried to go for the human, Padfoot spun around and snapped at his legs. The wolf turned on him again, forcing him backwards beneath an onslaught of growls, barks and snapping jaws. Finally he grabbed Padfoot around the scruff of his throat, James heard Padfoot’s scream as he struggled beneath the wolf. Finally his legs moved, he stood up and ran to Snape’s side, with difficulty he lifted him and began dragging him away from the wolf and dog. He heard Sirius scream again and winced. “I’m sorry...I’m sorry...I’ll come back, I promise! Don’t die!”
Padfoot glanced at the HUMAN’s and realised they were escaping, if he could keep WOLF distracted a little longer they would live. He whined as the pain from the wolf’s teeth seared his veins, his paws scrabbled uselessly against the dew soaked grass as he tried to fight his way free. The teeth tightened, he felt WOLF tense and knew what was coming...
James spun around on his feet, dropping Snape’s limp form by the doors of the Entrance Hall and gazed back across the grounds. His breathing caught in his throat as a terrible scream rent the air. James ran; his feet flying across the grass as he ran to his friend’s aid. As he reached the Willow he saw the Wolf standing over Padfoot and appearing to sniff at him. James drew closer and froze when those amber eyes met his, Sirius twitched where he lay, his paws dancing slightly as James watched. A pool of black blood spread from his body to stain the grass and soak into the ground. James gasped and stumbled backwards, he met the wolf’s gaze and changed.
Prongs lowered his magnificent head and pawed the ground, without another thought he charged GREY HUNTER. His hooves thundered over the ground, the night was filled with a sudden crash. Confused images rolled past Prongs’ eyes as his antlers connected with the side of GREY HUNTER. He had to protect his herd, he had to protect his mate. He felt claws rake his side and bellowed loudly before drawing back and charging again, he hit GREY HUNTER and made him yelp. GREY HUNTER turned furious eyes onto him as he snorted and lowered his head for another attack, he shivered as his own blood stained his flanks but he held his place. He stood over what had once been BLACK HUNTER but was now HUMAN, his stance protective and unmoving. GREY HUNTER growled and stalked them both, his amber eyes narrowed and his teeth revealed bloody in the silver moonlight. Prongs snorted again before running forward, GREY HUNTER swerved aside before snapping at Prongs’ delicate legs, Prongs danced out the way and watched GREY HUNTER flee into the forest. He snorted in satisfaction before turning to HUMAN. He bent his head and sniffed at his hair and face, HUMAN was much too still. HUMAN reeked of blood and pain and he trembled violently.
James gazed down at Sirius in horror. His throat was a mess, blood spilled out onto the grass and his face was as white as snow, his lips were parted slightly and his chest rose and fell rapidly. James fell to his knees and drew his wand, he shook badly as his vision blurred, his own wounds were insignificant in comparison to his friends and he pointed his wand at Sirius’ throat. The words of the spells left his numb lips and he watched as the wounds closed over, they left behind tiny thin scratches, hardly noticeable but still reminders that what had attacked him had been a dark creature. He was instantly glad that Sirius had been able to hold onto his transformation long enough to not risk being bitten in human form. James sighed and pressed his head against Sirius’ chest. “Fuck! You stupid idiot! You ridiculous fool!” He gasped. “It was you wasn’t it?” Slowly he lifted his head and saw Sirius’ eyes open, they were glazed with the remnants of pain but he nodded slowly. “Why?! Why would you do that?!”
Sirius struggled into a sitting position. “Because I...” He grimaced and spat blood to the floor, he wiped his mouth on his wrist and winced. “Because I wanted revenge...I wanted to see him piss himself with fear...he’s always following us, you know? Trying to catch us doing something that will get us kicked out of school...I just wanted to scare him off.”
James grabbed Sirius’ shoulders and shook him violently. “You could have killed him!” He shouted furiously. “You are many things, Black, but you are not a murderer!”
Sirius heard his friend’s conviction and smiled, he reached up and smoothed his thumb over James’ cheek bone. “I could be.” He breathed.
James froze as a howl rent the air, they shivered in the sudden cold and turned to see the wolf pacing the edges of the forest. He limped slightly from Padfoot’s attack. Together Padfoot and Prongs herded the angry wolf back into the shack and made sure the entrance was sealed, then they made their way back to Severus Snape who was still unconscious. “Did the wolf hurt him?” Sirius asked, he was leaning heavily on James, his whole body weak from the amount of blood he’d lost.
“No. Not seriously, I think you did more damage by hitting him than the wolf...Why did you bother saving him if you hate him so much?” James lifted Severus’ limp form up and they began making their way back to the castle.
“Because of you.” Sirius said with a shrug. “Because you would never have spoken to me again if I had let him die...and because Moony doesn’t need that on his conscience.”
James shook his head as they reached the doors and found Peter standing there, his eyes were wide as he took in Snape. “I got help...” He squeaked just as Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall came out into the moonlight. Sirius hissed air through his teeth as a wave of dizziness hit him, he stumbled forward and darkness crept into his vision.
“What happened?!” McGonagall said sharply, her eyes scanning the boy’s dirty, bloodied clothes and Sirius’ white face. Her eyes landed on Snape and she pursed her lips. “Is he hurt?”
“No Professor but I think Sirius is-” James couldn’t catch Sirius as his legs gave out beneath him and he fell to the stone steps with a loud thud.
“To the hospital Wing with you Potter, make sure Mr. Snape has a bed.” She drew her wand and waved it, Sirius’ unconscious form lifted into the air and they began transporting him to the Hospital Wing.
James dumped Snape onto a bed and turned just as McGonagall lay Sirius down gently. He ran to his side and looked at him, under the cold lights his lips were slightly blue. The blood covering his throat was obvious and James desperately tried to think up an excuse...the only one he could think of was going to hurt Sirius even further. While Dumbledore and the others were distracted by Snape James leaned over Sirius and whispered; “I’m sorry...” and he reached into Sirius’ pocket to withdraw a silver knife, he flicked it open and surreptitiously opened Sirius’ wrists. He made sure the cut wasn’t too deep, and slipped the knife back into his pocket. When those wounds healed there would be no sign he had been attacked by a werewolf.
“Now then, what is wrong with Mr. Black?” Poppy asked as she bustled over. James stepped back and remained silent as she stripped him of his clothes. “Oh my!” She exclaimed as she revealed his bleeding wrist, she healed them quickly with a single wave of her wand. “It appears he has lost rather a lot of blood...but after a good draft of Blood Replenishing potion he will be as right a rain.”
“Potter, explain to us what happened.” McGonagall said sternly.
James ran his hand through his hair and sighed. “Well...Sirius told Snape how to...how to find Remus...”
Dumbledore nodded. “I see, and Snape, ever trying to get you all into trouble, decided to find out what you were doing...”
“Yes sir...I...I pulled him back before he had time to get seriously hurt but...but he kind of fainted.”
“And how did Sirius get hurt?”
James shifted uneasily, somehow he had the feeling Dumbledore knew exactly what had transpired. They had no choice however, they had to keep their Animagus forms a secret. “I-I’m not entirely sure...I think Snape might have hurt him or...or the Whomping Willow...It was all so confusing.”
“Potter!”
James flinched automatically.
“You’re bleeding!”
James looked down at himself and sure enough he had several long scratches that had ripped through his jeans, he could now feel the blood filling his shoe from the gouges in his thigh. “Oh...” He said in surprise. “I didn’t realise...”
“Did the wolf come out of the Shack?” Dumbledore asked, his eyes narrowed slightly. “Did it bite any of you?”
James was forced onto a bed by Pomfrey who began seeing to his wounds, he wrapped his arms around his stomach and shook his head. “No. None of us were bitten.”
“What you did was monumentally stupid, Mr. Potter!” McGonagall seemed beside herself. “Not only could you have all been in serious trouble you could have got Snape killed! Or worse, you could have been bitten yourselves! What on earth am I to do with you?”
James hung his head. “I’m sorry professor.”
“Sorry is not good enough, young man! I should ban you from Quidditch for the rest of the year but you are captain and the only one qualified enough to take up that post...” She sighed. “Both you and Mr. Black will have a month of detentions, you will both be in separate ones I think. I want you to spend tonight in the Hospital Wing just in case...” She turned and walked away.
James turned and looked at Sirius, he saw his eyes open and a bottle of potion clutched in his hand. Sirius groaned as he sat up and downed the potion, he winced and put the empty bottle on the side. “Sorry...” He said softly, unable to meet James’ eyes.
“I’m more worried about Remus...you do realise that Snape is going to tell the whole school don’t you?”
Sirius winced. “No, he won’t...”
“You are correct, I will not allow this to ruin Remus’ schooling.”
James and Sirius both jumped and looked at Dumbledore, they had forgotten he had been there. “S-Sir?” James asked. “How will you do that?”
“He will be sworn to secrecy as it is not Remus’ fault this has happened. You two must be the luckiest two boys in the world, this whole thing could have ended in tragedy.”
“Yes sir.” Sirius muttered roughly.
“To only walk away with blood loss and some scars, it is impressive.”
Sirius’ hand went to his throat and he looked away. “It was...claws...Not teeth.”
“I surmised as much.” Dumbledore smiled mysteriously, almost as if he knew more than he was letting on. “Be careful next time.” He wandered away and the door closed behind him.

The next morning Remus was escorted into the Hospital Wing, he was limping slightly and had a cloak wrapped around his shoulders as Pomfrey sat him down on a bed he looked around with a glazed expression. He spotted his friends sat on a bed and playing chess. They looked up and Sirius scrambled out of bed and rushed over to him, he crouched on the floor and looked up at him. “I’m sorry.” He whispered softly.
Pomfrey left them alone to find some ointment for the wounds covering Remus’ fragile looking body. Remus wrapped the cloak around himself tighter and blinked slowly at Sirius, his eyes held onto the soft amber glow of the wolf. “You bastard.” He croaked.
Sirius hung his head. “Yeah...I guess I deserve that...”
Remus grabbed him and pulled him upright, he grabbed his throat and gazed at the thin scars, he was rough and his nails dug into Sirius’ skin, he felt him swallow nervously. “I could have fucking killed you.” He growled furiously. James watched but did nothing as Remus’ fingers tightened on Sirius’ throat, Sirius closed his eyes. “You don’t do something so dangerous again, do you hear me?”
“Y-Yes...” Sirius rasped, his hand gripping Remus’ wrist.
Remus released him, seemingly satisfied and sighed. “How badly did I hurt you?” He looked at James, his eyes landing on his legs.
“I got a few scratches...nothing too bad.”
Remus nodded and turned to Sirius who looked away. “How bad?”
“It was nothing...”
“How bad?!” Remus’ growl made Sirius lower his head.
“You nearly ripped my throat out.” He said softly, too quietly for Pomfrey to hear.
Remus made an odd twitching movement with his hand and he took a shaky breath. “You idiots.” He put an arm around his stomach and lowered his head. “I could have killed you...I could have turned you...I could have...”
“It’s pointless beating yourself up over something that was entirely my fault.” Sirius muttered, his hand lingering on his throat, the guilt was obvious in his face as he gazed at his friend. He fell to his knees again, resting his hands on Remus’ legs as he looked into his eyes. “I shouldn’t have been so reckless...I was stupid for putting you into a position that would potentially render you a murderer. I’m sorry, Moony.”
Remus looked into his sincere eyes for a moment before sighing and pushing hair from Sirius’ face with one hand, he smiled. “It’s alright. You made a stupid mistake...I can forgive that...”
“Thanks.” Sirius muttered, pushing his head into Remus’ hand and closing his eyes.
“I’m not sure if the wolf will though...” Remus said absently, for a second his eyes flashed yellow and he shivered. “He didn’t like you fighting him...he doesn’t like the fact that you challenged his authority...”
Sirius sighed. “I had to...If I didn’t stop you...”
“I would have killed Snape. I know.” Remus pushed his fingers into Sirius’ hair and pulled his head back, James stepped forward but froze when Remus sent him a glare. “The wolf needs to punish you...”
Sirius nodded as best he could with Remus’ fingers tangled in his hair. He let himself be dragged upright and forced onto the bed, he turned his face away from Remus’ as he leaned over him. James watched the scene feeling nervous and more than a little jealous, he bit his lower lip and shifted uncomfortably as Remus pinned Sirius down by his hair and throat. There was something almost sexual about the pose but James knew that wasn’t in Remus’ mind, he was trying to re-assert his dominance over his pack while the wolf was still raging through his system. Sirius tensed only once when Remus’ hand tightened on his throat but finally he relaxed, he continued to avoid eye contact. It was strange being in human form but he had no choice, otherwise the next full moon he would be driven from the pack and it was best sorted in human form where there was little risk of serious injury. Finally Remus relaxed too and leaned down, running his tongue over Sirius’ face before letting him up. Sirius wiped his face on his sleeve and smiled weakly.

After that incident the attacks from Snape doubled. James realised that walking the corridors without his hand on his wand was dangerous. Remus and Sirius kept close by his side, they kept their eyes out for any potential dangers. So far Snape had been true to his word to Dumbledore and had not spoken to anyone about Remus’ condition, however he had taken to hissing ‘Half-breed’, ‘Animal’ and other such degrading things when they were in close proximity. This led to James and Sirius gaining several more detentions for duelling in the corridors. People began realising that it was best to vacate any area where the four Gryffindor’s and the lone Slytherin were near each other, the only one who dared stand up to them was Lily who was becoming increasingly irritated by James’ vendetta against Snape.
It was soon apparent that the Slytherin’s weren’t going to allow any of their number to be bullied indiscriminately and so obviously. They began to go on the offensive, any excuse to punish Bloodtraitors.
It was addictive, Sirius realised. He liked the sudden rush of adrenaline when he was attacked in the corridors, he liked the pain, the intense feeling of satisfaction and power he got when he subdued his opponent and he even kind of liked the humiliating sting when he was beaten. His friends all noticed how he changed, he was cocky with the Slytherin’s goading them into attacking him and when they did he laughed in their faces and made them ever more angry. James found it increasingly annoying, he ended up with bloody shirts, small wounds and once he had even broken his fingers. Remus rarely took part in the fights, unless it was to defend himself or his friends with a hasty shield charm. He would never attack, merely shield.
One evening Sirius was walking down the corridors alone, he had just come from his detention. He had his shirt open and his tie undone around his neck, a cigarette was tucked behind his ear as he walked with his hands stuffed deep in his pockets. He hummed softly to himself as he reached the doors and pushed them open, they weren’t locked for which he was grateful. He slipped outside into the fresh air and lit his cigarette with the stolen Zippo lighter. He smoked and looked up at the sky, he was feeling pretty good with himself and content with his place in the world. As he smoked he felt something behind him, his hackles rose but before he could turn he felt hands over his eyes.
