“Good morning sir,” Hermione whispered as she walked into the potion’s lab. She was the first there.
“Miss Granger,” Snape greeted glumly, not bothering to look up from his grading.
She felt like crying at the dull tone in his voice. “It didn’t work?”
Snape sighed and put down his quill. “I honestly don’t know. A vampire opened the door, said he’d never heard of either of them. I…could smell them, but I couldn’t tell if it was fresh. If it wasn’t such an old vampire who answered, I would have forced my way in, but I wouldn’t stand a chance against him.”
Hermione dropped her books on her desk and walked over to her professor, taking his icy hands in hers. “Maybe she was just being cautious. Do you think she heard?”
Snape snorted. “I’m sure the entire neighborhood heard us shouting at the top of our lungs.”
Hermione frowned. “You might be a young vampire, but you are a very skilled wizard. Why not just hex the vampire or outsmart him?”
Snape smirked. “You’ve had a bit too much Slytherin inserted into you Miss Granger.”
Hermione blushed red as a tomato and dropped his hand. “I –I b-beg your pardon!”
“I merely meant that you chose a very Slytherin way to approach the problem. Get your mind out of the gutter Miss Granger.”
“Still,” she seethed. “Answer the question.”
Snape sighed. “Unfortunately, I must abide by the laws of my coven. I am not allowed to challenge an elder, especially an elder council member of my coven.”
“Vampires have politics?”
“Just like every species, Miss Granger, vampires have their own laws. To disobey means certain death.”
Hermione nodded. “Well, perhaps they are staying with the coven for protection.”
“Perhaps,” Snape said sadly. “But I can tell you that I was never properly assimilated into the coven. It was imperative that my identity remain secret, lest my position within the inner circle of Death Eaters be compromised. It is likely that if they are seeking protection with the coven, they will move.”
“It will work out, sir,” Hermione said, patting his hand. “You’ll see.”
“How very Gryffindor,” he sneered. “Now take your seat, preferably not in Mr. Malfoy’s lap.”
Hermione huffed and sat down. The rest of the class began trickling in several moments later. Snape announced that they would be working on a potion to combat malnourishment. She fought back a blush when she realized that this was for her and Draco. They must have depleted Madam Pomfrey’s stores.
“And since this is a very complex potion, you will be working in pairs,” Snape continued, his voice rising when the class went to pick partners. “Not so fast. I will be choosing your partners.”
The class protested loudly as Snape paired everyone with a person from a different house. Hermione had to admire the vampire. He was trying to improve house relations. Then again, placing her with Draco was a strategic move. She could fill him in on what happened the night before…and they would learn how to brew their own potion so they could quit going to the hospital.
She and Draco worked well together. They were the top students in potions after all. She even had time to write notes to him and explain what Snape had found out. Draco was quite concerned with the turn of events. The family stone had never been wrong. It could find any blood relative, provided they were alive. It wouldn’t have located Venus if she weren’t alive, and that included being turned into a vampire. He wondered if Naomi had the elder answer on purpose, a test of some sort.
“Time!” Snape called out. “Please bring your completed potions up front and clean your workstations.”
“Meet me for lunch again?” Draco whispered as they tidied up their mess.
Hermione smiled and nodded. “Oh, and Harry knows.”
“How did he take it?”
“He’ll probably give you a threatening speech,” she sighed and grabbed her bag.
“You’re worth it,” he whispered and dashed off to use the loo before his next class, Arithmancy.
“Malfoy!”
He’d just exited the bathroom when a wild looking Potter flew around the corner, wide eyed and panting. His stomach bottomed out but he managed to put on an indifferent look. “Potter?”
“She… we don’t know what’s wrong with her.”
“Who?” Draco snapped, wanting to make sure he wasn’t panicking without a reason.
“Hermione,” Harry panted.
Draco clenched his fists, trying to keep his wits about him. Potter knew about them. He wouldn’t have come to get him if there wasn’t something very wrong. “Where is she?”
“Third floor, there’s a broom closet and she just… lost it.”
“Shit,” Draco breathed and took off, not caring one whit if Potter was keeping up with him.
He knew exactly what was going on. That was where Magdalene had died. It had struck a special chord with Hermione, having been a victim of the basilisk herself. Even now he felt like a bloody prick because he’d said horrid things he didn’t mean his second year. His father had brainwashed him very young.
As he rounded the corner, his heart broke into a million pieces. Hermione was curled in a tiny ball against the wall. Her eyes were wide and unseeing as she shook. He didn’t understand what had frightened her until he looked down the hall and saw it, the basilisk. No, it couldn’t still be there. She was alive, not even petrified.
He didn’t care what it looked like. He raced over and scooped her up in his arms, whispering that everything was fine. It couldn’t be real. They were both alive and that thing had been slayed by Potter. Tears glided down her cheeks as she explained that she’d seen Magdalene’s ghost and then the basilisk. Draco believed her, though it was clear her friends didn’t. Weasley was starting at them agape, though he couldn’t be sure if it was the fact that she was seeing things or that he was holding her so tenderly. Harry merely frowned in concern while the female Weasely looked on in astonishment. Looney Lovegood was with them, her face serene as she stared off in the direction the basilisk was.
“Oh I’m sorry Draco,” Hermione cried. “I just couldn’t help it. It was so sad and then it scared me.”
“Hush love,” Draco whispered. “I understand. Why don’t we skip class and go to the hospital wing to get you checked out, alright?”
“You don’t believe me?”
“I do,” he said, choosing his words carefully. “But maybe Pomfrey can give you a calming draught or something so you can attend your other classes, alright?”
She nodded and allowed him to carry her to the hospital wing, ignoring the stares that they received from everyone else. He hadn’t expected to announce their relationship quite like this but couldn’t bring himself to care at the moment. Hermione was acting more emotional than usual and that was saying something. He just felt it in his gut that something was wrong. She’d gone through the entire war and not shed a tear and now she was falling apart.
He was panting by the time they got there. Merlin he needed to build himself back up. She didn’t weigh that bloody much. Pomfrey clucked and directed him to a cot in the back as she went to work with her diagnostics. Her mouth turned down when one particular one glowed pink.
“Miss Granger,” she began tersely. “When is the last time you had your monthly?”
Hermione blushed bright red. “Um, about a week after we got stuck in the ROR.”
Madam Pomfrey frowned and recast. The spell flared bright pink and she tutted, casting dozens more.
“Is something wrong?” Draco asked, worried as the mediwitch worked herself into a tizzy.
“Well,” she sighed. “Nothing that eight months won’t cure.”
“What?” he snapped, not understanding her cryptic message.
“Miss Granger, I believe you are pregnant, about three weeks by the looks of it.”
Hermione’s eyes went wide before she collapsed on the bed. She’d fainted.
“Impossible,” Draco whispered, his fear very real.
“Why is that Mr. Malfoy?”
“Because I’m the only one she was with in that time frame… and I’m sterile. It’s a family charm enacted generations ago to stop illegitimate children. It abates when a marriage contract is fulfilled.”
“Can it be detected?” Pomfrey asked.
He nodded and cast the detection spell on himself. The spell should have glowed purple... but it didn’t.
“Mr. Malfoy, I believe that the charm has been deactivated,” Madam Pomfrey said.
She cast another spell over Hermione’s stomach. This time, golden words appeared in the air.
Father: Draco Abraxus Malfoy
Draco sat down hard, his head spinning. She was pregnant… with his child.
