It was dark. So much so that she would not be able to see her own hands in front of her. She left almost immediately, only taking the time to change into a comfortable pair of sneakers. Jeans were a must.
She knew it would be chilly, so she also donned a long-sleeved t-shirt. She kissed her parents on the cheek and then she was gone. Literally, gone.
Hermione could not apparate directly into the woods. It had to do with the rules of magic. But she could apparate near the words. She remembered reading about them, and she had an image of the area in her mind.
Chewing on a granola bar, she began to quickly pick her way through the woods—or at least tried to.
It was so dark. Black.
Lumos!
It was enough for her to question the haste in which she made her decision. But where a friend was concerned…Hermione let her feelings cloud her judgment.
If Ginny was here…
If she needed her help…
Hermione would rather be tricked than to ignore a cry for help, no matter how far-fetched. In truth, there was very big chance that this was some strange trick. Probably concocted by Malfoy. Or any one of the many dark wizards or witches who eluded capture.
She did not want to live with another regret on her conscience.
For Hermione, this was an opportunity, maybe her last one…to redeem herself.
So she dashed off, with hardly a word. Just a quick goodbye. And now she carefully walked around ancient trees, most with their roots jutting out of the earth. They were as big as California Red Oaks, perhaps even bigger.
The ground was soft. Damp. A shiver crept up her spine.
She had absolutely no idea where she was even headed.
But I’m here. I came.
The lack of sound was unnerving.
No birds, no animals.
But that was to be expected.
The Blood Forest was ancient, even the wizards did not entirely understand the area. They knew it was dangerous, that many people went missing within its woods. Some say swallowed up by the earth itself.
She almost laughed. It kind of reminded her of something that Tolkien would have imagined. Only far, far more dark.
A barrier existed, hiding it from muggles. Sometimes people went missing.
No one was ever found.
Hermione continued to move deeper. She wanted to call out Ginny’s name, But she was afraid that could cause trouble.
Time passed. She grew tired. She rested by a tree, and chastised herself for not thinking to pack important things like food and water.
It seems that the practical and wise Hermione Granger was a thing of the past.
‘Malfoy would laugh if he saw me like this.’
She shook her head, and then rose. It was important to stay focused, and to keep moving. She wasn’t sure if she was moving deeper into the forest or if she was merely wandering in circles. Probably a mixture of both.
But a light shot into the air.
Several, in fact. Like white fireworks, soundless.
She made for that direction.
It wasn’t very far.
She was so close—
‘OH MY GOD!’ She screamed, the ground disappearing as she literally sunk into the earth.
Water?
She looked around wildly.
She couldn’t touch the ground.
Stay calm, stay calm—
Impossible to do when you couldn’t see three feet in front of you.
She held up her wand and gasped.
She was in a kind of thick, algae like pond.
It was rank. Disgusting
And it was…blood!
She frantically spun around, but the more she twisted, the more thick algae-like plants wrapped around her, slowing her movement.
She needed to get out, she was not going to die here, she needed to find Ginny---
And that was when her wand fell out of her hand, and she was plunged into darkness…
